Cardiff win as Bournemouth away form bodes well for Liverpool assets

Fantasy Premier League managers disappointed by Liverpool assets in recent weeks should be encouraged by the way Bournemouth played at Cardiff in Gameweek 25.

The Cherries followed up their headline-grabbing 4-0 win over Chelsea with a poor performance at the Cardiff City Stadium.

However, it was the perfect result for the Bluebirds given recent events concerning Emiliano Sala.

The budget options making a name for themselves, as well as Bournemouth’s shortcomings, are the focus of this latest Scout Notes article.

Cardiff 2-0 Bournemouth

Goals: Bobby Reid x2 (£5.2m)

Assists: Aron Gunnarsson (£4.4m)

Oumar Niasse (£5.0m) and Bobby Reid (£5.2m) were the stars of the show as Cardiff earned an emotional victory over Bournemouth on Saturday evening. It was the first match played at the Cardiff City Stadium since the disappearance of Emiliano Sala and the occasion seemed to bring out the best in the Bluebirds’ players. It was a thoroughly deserved victory for the Welsh side, who made the most of their possession, registered more shots in the box and efforts on target than the Cherries and outscored them for expected goals (xG) too (2.07 to 0.51).

The Cardiff City Stadium is starting to become a key location for the Bluebirds’ survival hopes. Of their last eight matches in front of their own supporters, the only teams to have beaten them are Spurs and Man United, with the other six games, all against opponents outside the top six, handing them five wins and one draw. In those non-top six encounters, Cardiff have averaged 1.8 goals per game. With Watford, Everton and West Ham all set for visits to south Wales in the next five Gameweeks, there will be plenty more opportunity for Bluebirds assets to impress Fantasy managers.

Reid took the headlines with his brace, as he continues in his efforts to hold down a place in the Cardiff first team, dropping into a number 10 role of late. This was his third start in five matches, but his second in a row. After his excellent performance against Bournemouth, it would be hard for manager Neil Warnock to bench him for the Gameweek 26 trip to Southampton. The local press are already claiming Reid should be one of the first names on the team-sheet after recent displays. One of his two goals was from the penalty spot after a Steve Cook (£4.4m) handball, indicating he actually has a decent position in the pecking order. We believe that the still absent Victor Camarasa (£4.6m) is still the designated penalty taker for now but the fact that Joe Ralls (£4.6m) was on the pitch when Reid opened the scoring, indicates the former Bristol City man is at least second.

Despite Reid’s goals, it was Niasse who earned the most praise from Warnock and the local press at full-time. He led the line for the third match in a row since signing on loan from Everton, his runs into the channels and ability to act as a focal point invaluable to Cardiff. Both of those are something that Warnock’s men have been in need of for some time. Niasse was described as another player who should be among the first on the team sheet for Gameweek 26 by Cardiff’s local press. He had more efforts on goal than any player in the match but was also joint-top for chances created too. While he is yet to find any attacking returns this season, Niasse is one to watch based on this performance.

“Oumar needed a bit of love and since he’s been here I don’t think he’s ever worked so hard. He smiles at me when I shout at him, but he’s given us another dimension. It makes you think we’ve played two and a half years without a striker, it’s not bad going really!” – Neil Warnock

Warnock may be faced with a selection dilemma in midfield now, given the form of Reid especially. Ralls and Aron Gunnarsson (£4.4m) played the deeper holding roles against Bournemouth, but could both drop to the bench for Gameweek 26. Harry Arter (£4.9m) was ineligible to face his parent club but his bustling energy in central midfield has not really been matched by either Ralls or Gunnarsson this season. Meanwhile, Camarasa is still missing through injury but Warnock is optimistic about a return soon. Where he will slot back in will be interesting to see. Many have claimed that the Spaniard has been Cardiff’s best player this season, having operated at number 10 before Reid’s recent run of form. Warnock will have to decide which of the two holds that berth, with Camarasa also capable of playing deeper in the 4-2-3-1.

“We didn’t have Harry Arter or Victor (Camarasa), so we were quite bold in the team selection, I thought we were quite positive in how we set up.” – Neil Warnock

Predicting who will play on the left wing for Cardiff is becoming more difficult with each passing Gameweek. Having not started since Gameweek 21, Josh Murphy (£4.8m) was back against Bournemouth, with Junior Hoilett (£5.0m) getting the nod for the Gameweek 23 defeat at Newcastle, the last time Cardiff played 4-2-3-1.

“It was good to see (Josh) Murphy back in the swing of things.” – Neil Warnock

The right flank looks a little simpler if Niasse is to make the centre-forward position his own. Callum Paterson (£5.0m) has been deployed on the right of midfield for the last two matches in which Warnock has used the 4-2-3-1 formation. He looks likely to keep his place there for now.

The clean sheet kept on Saturday evening was Cardiff’s seventh of the season, an impressive total considering their newly-promoted status. Only Liverpool (13), Chelsea (11), Manchester City (10), Tottenham (10) and Crystal Palace (nine) have recorded more this season than the Bluebirds.

“So to be disciplined like we were and get a clean sheet – our seventh clean sheet which for a relegation-threatened side is pretty good – we had all the ingredients. It was almost like we couldn’t be beaten, the crowd would not let us be beaten. It was fabulous being stood on the touchline.” – Neil Warnock

This latest shutout was particularly impressive considering that Cardiff are still without key centre-back Sean Morrison (£4.7m), who is out until March with an abdominal problem. Bruno Ecuele Manga (£4.4m) continues to deputise for him alongside Sol Bamba (£4.6m), opening up the right-back spot for Lee Peltier (£3.9m), who has started the last three in a row. Until Morrison comes back from injury, it means we do have another starting £3.9m defender in the game.

Bamba and Manga looked particularly impressive against Bournemouth, emerging as the game’s leaders for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI) scoring 14 and 11 respectively. Only two players have achieved higher CBI scores than Bamba in Gameweek 25 so far.

Meanwhile, Bournemouth continue to struggle when not playing at the Vitality Stadium. After issuing a strong statement with their 4-0 thrashing of Chelsea in Gameweek 24, they were virtually ineffectual against Cardiff. In fact, the Cherries’ last points away from home came in Gameweek 10 when they were 3-0 winners at Fulham, all the way back in October. They have now lost the last seven road trips in a row by a score of 20-3, conceding an average of 2.9 goals per game in that run. Up next for Eddie Howe’s men: a Gameweek 26 trip to Anfield and Liverpool.

“It’s hugely disappointing as we really wanted to build on what we’ve done. We thought the Chelsea game could’ve been a turning point for us and we’re really searching for consistency. We’ve never felt like we’ve got that, we go away from home and we feel really disappointed today. There’s time to reflect and focus on Liverpool but to sort out our inconsistency is the biggest challenge. We can’t play like we did on Wednesday then play like we did today – the mental side was a factor today.” – Eddie Howe

Bournemouth are obviously struggling in the face of key players missing, with Callum Wilson (£6.4m) absent for the second match in a row with a knee problem and David Brooks (£5.1m) recently joining him on the sidelines. The Welshman is likely to be out for three weeks with an ankle injury.

“David (Brooks) injured his ankle scoring against Chelsea. It was a strange injury, he didn’t feel it kicking the ball but felt in the celebration that he injured himself. He’ll be missing for around three weeks we think.” – Eddie Howe

In their absence, Bournemouth’s remaining key players did not particularly impress, after promising so much. In the four matches prior to Gameweek 24, only Paul Pogba (£8.6m) had more shots in the box than Josh King (£6.4m), who mustered just two in Cardiff. Making his Premier League debut up front, Dominic Solanke (£4.7m) did not register a single effort. Meanwhile, Ryan Fraser (£6.1m), usually a consistent creator, played just one key pass in the whole 90 minutes. Repeat performances from these players and their Bournemouth team-mates in Gameweek 26 could help Liverpool defensive and attacking assets reward patience in them.

The back four remained unchanged for Bournemouth from the quartet who kept out Chelsea midweek, while Artur Boruc (£3.9m) continues to keep Asmir Begović (£4.4m) out of the team.

Cardiff City XI (4-4-1-1): Etheridge; Bennett, Bamba, Ecuele Manga, Peltier; Murphy (Hoilett 69′), Ralls, Gunnarsson, Paterson; Reid (Bacuna 86′); Niasse (Zohoré 83′).

Bournemouth XI (4-4-1-1): Boruc; A Smith, Aké, S Cook, Clyne; Fraser, Surman, Gosling (Lerma 69′), Stanislas (Ibe 62′); King; Solanke (Mousset 62′).

Best DGW / BGW Strategies for people who have used their WC?

I personally think it all depends on our FH? Would you rather free hit on a BGW or DGW? I'm currently set on the latter and making sure I have a base team for the BGWks? How are others looking at it?

Would love to come up with a good strategy so can plan transfers accordingly from now.

It will depend on cup results, but arguably easier to plan for a BGW and FH on a DGW.

Yeh BB or TC on the other dgw.. most probably BB and TC on a punt between now and end of the season.

i am having the same dilemma , no wc, my fear of preparing the team for the blank gameweek 31 is that you are not bringing in the best team you can in the lead up to GW31 as many of the top sides are blanking as we know?... and after gw 31 too

whereas preparing for dgw32 and FH in 31, you can essentially bring in/keep much more favourable players from 27 - 32 as more top teams are going to DGW than the teams that wont blank in 31.

      Does that make sense?

sorry if ive missed something, its my 1st year looking at using the chips strategically.

        my point being:

Liverpool only top 6 team to play BGW 31 right?...so meanwhile our team is depleting of city, chelsea, spurs utd assets to prepare for BGW?? these are the teams that will be giving us points leading up to 31 and beyond 32 FH

Please correct me if i'm wrong, but doesnt it make more sense the other way round? if utd and city are doubling in DGW 32...prepare for this DGW from 27 and FH in 31 with the bmouth and west ham players (i think) who dont blank.

I'm pn this one at the moment.
Last year I have got lots of crap players in my team for the BGW and missed a lot of pts. and to be honest its only BGW31 that we need to be worry about as BGW 33 will include Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs.

          thats what im saying....

I know it would be a lot more fun to FH in 32, but we have from 27 to 32 to build a great team of doubles and i havent checked yet, but feel like those teams doubling in 32 will be closer to our current teams now with more top 6 players than the players in bgw 31........you can even build to get 15 double gw players and use BB in 32 no ?

i guess the answer is to wait and see who is in the DGW 32 and take it from there?

do we know yet who it might be thats got doubles?

Hey guys thanks for the replies - yes will have to wait for the news re the dgwks.. I like the idea of getting a team for the doubles and then using FH on the first blank - regardless.. Although we would be fairly screwed for the second blank, which would be similar if the FH is used in the double.. It's a headache deciding and tbh I'd like to have an idea before making my transfer for the upcoming gameweek so I can plan accordingly.

I think there's no obvious option and either would work, but once we get the full fixture information one method may be more popular then the other - although it may not be the right one 😉

Last few weeks have been a disaster and team is a sorry mess.

Appreciate any help in sorting this out.

    Ryan* Button*
    Robbo TAA Doherty Bednarek Bennett
    Salah Sterling* Pogba Sane* Son
    Rashford Ings* Kamara*

    0 Ft 0.8 itb.

    My options:
    1. Sterling + Ings > Auba + Jota (-8)
    2. Just Button + Ings > Guaita + Rondon (-4) next week
    3. Any other suggestions

I am going to be doing Sané, Laporte > Son, Kola (-4) this GW.

Is it worth an additional -4 to do Kamara > Jimi?

It is obv a longer term move and also jumps on his great fixture run of NEW, bou, hud, CAR
(I also have Jota and Doherty)

If not, I will play 2 up front this week (Kun, Rash) and keep AK47 glued to 3rd on the bench

I still have all my chips intact . Thinking of taking a -8 this week and sorting some things out that should be positive all round longer term and help for blanks planning - need to do something drastic to make change!

Yes, they are fodder of sorts - but I'm just looking for the best option and will keep on the bench most weeks bar blanks and weeks where say Wolves have an awful game.

Well, if you were going to captain Salah if you didn’t bring in Sane, as I would have done.

Then you “just” need 9 to beat Haz + Salah

        Thoughts on Lacazette?
I rather get Auba, but I don't fancy Arsenal assets after between GW 28 and the wildcard, so might as well take a punt and use the money elsewhere
Laca is a straight swap to Higuain/Firmino so it could fit nicely.

Sky and BT are pathetic not showing the game live tomorrow night considering how much their costumers have to pay through the nose for the service.

Meanwhile you can watch the game live in other country's that only pay a fraction of the cost that us chumps in the UK and Ireland are expected to pay.

No wonder people turn to dodgy boxes because they get a better choice and can watch the game that they want to watch. They only have themselves to blame and the sooner the likes of Amazon Prime and/or Netflix come in a take the rights off them the better it will be for people.

You are at a disadvantage from an fpl point of view living in the UK and Ireland because you have better coverage of the league in other county's.

MOTD is rubbish anyway tbf.The pundits are brutal and the highlights are too compressed for my liking.Extended highlights on Sky are a bit better and you have a better chance of taking in more of the game.

Noting can beat watching a game live and it is the best way to take it all in.

They might have a go at some players but never really pick it apart too much or turn the knife once the have stuck it in.

They rarely criticize English internationals no matter what they do and it is sick watching them crawling up their holes sometimes.

If i am not watching MOTD live and have it recorded i will just fast forward past the so called pundits as they offer noting to me.

The only problem when there isn't a monopoly, like Sky used to have is that now if you want to watch all the games is you have to pay everyones subscription service.
Sky didn't lower their price when they lost the Champions League to BT, they just kept it the same, and added the Dutch league!
Now I have to pay Sky, and BT...and next year, Amazon Prime too.

A monopoly is a disaster for the average Joe,always has and always has and always will be.

I would not call only two players in the market a non monopoly situation and from what i have seen they are only ganging up with each other to screw the punters.

I hope they get their noses rubbed in it the next time the PL rights are up for auction in 2022 i think.Either by people walking away from their crap service or big guns like Amazon or Netflix entering the market.

Well surely with more companies bidding, the higher the price goes up, and the more the channel who wins the right will have to charge the consumer in order to justify the price they paid.
              So no one really wins.

If I have to subscribe to Sky, BT, Amazon, Netflix and Hulu in order to watch PL, CL, and international games (eventually) then certainly I'm not winning.

The £50 or so I currently pay between Sky and BT, will only go up if I have to pay additional companies. Sky/BT won't lower their prices as their coverage dilutes.

There's nothing to say people will keep subscribing to all services at extortionate price. They still have to get the pricing right, to meet the demands...otherwise, remember sentanta?

                  .....no? 🙂
Kidding, didn't they pay loads of money for the rights to the Championship?

I'm guessing if TV rights were somehow split 30%, 30%, 30%...and 10% (on netflix on something)..and CL on another network. They could all get away with charging £35.00 each, and people would still pay it.

Sky Sports is about £35 a month (that's for about 80% of live PL games)
BT Sports has the CL, and the other 20% of PL games, and that's £10 a month if you get your broadband through them, otherwise it's £30 or so again.

Is that just sports though, or in total for everything?
I have Now TV, and sports monthly is £33 or something, but often I get offers to reduce it to £20 a month if I agree to sign up for three months.

I also get BT streamed through my EE mobile contract, and that's only £12.50 or something.

Sky verity,Sky sports and Sky F1 is around €100 and then BT/Eir is part of the phone/internet package for the house which is another €50/60 per month but seen as that is a business line it is kinda essential anyway.

Nope. 3pm Saturday kick offs aren't allowed to be televised (I believe the reason for this to try and preserve actual attendance of the game itself)
                Everything else is.
This City v Everton game is an exception because it wasn't originally scheduled for TV coverage.

Actually Everton-Man City was BT's original pick for GW27, but with it being moved BT choose Leicester-Palace instead. Perhaps when charging customers £30 a month they felt they couldnt have a weekend without showing a game.

The next few weeks on BT look pretty dull.
                    Brighton v Burnley
                    Leicester v Palace
                    Cardiff v Bournemouth last week.

I guess they offset it by promoting the CL games next week, and clashes with the 6nations too.

        Team atm -

        Fabianski - Hamer
        Trippier - TAA - AWB - Bednarek - Bennett
        Salah - Sterling - Sane - Richarlison - SChneiderlin
        Firmino - Rashford - Mitrovic

1 FT and 1.3m in the bank.

        GW 26 - Sane ➡ Pogba
        GW 27 - Motrovic + Firmino + Richarlison ➡ Aubameyang + Jimenez + Anderson for -8.

I would get McNeil over Billing otherwise good. You will want Anderson over Richarlison at some point for 31

If you can afford Sane & Kamara to Auba & someone that is also a good option.

Thanks....ant afford karans suggestion......will look at mcneil

Anderson is an option for 27.

But that means no son ....

Could do ederson and richi to boruc and son- 4 as alternative to Anderson for free.....

            Thanks

That would be amazing as a Sterling(TC) and Sane owner.

        Gun to the head:

Son or Pogba for the next 5?

Fixtures for both mixed and both in decent form so Pogba as Son more likely to be rotated once Kane back

Which of the following transfer would you do this week, with bgw 27 in mind as well ?

        A. Aguero to Auba
        B. Hazard to Son
        C. Richa to Jota

Thinking B this week and A before gw 27.

        Thoughts?
