Doherty stars in FA Cup as Wolves’ Blank Gameweek chances increase

Wolves progressed to the fifth round of the FA Cup after defeating Shrewsbury Town in a fourth-round replay on Tuesday night.

The result did not drastically change the landscape of upcoming Blanks, as the Premier League side still have to face Bristol City before their Gameweek 31 fate is sealed.

If they beat the Championship outfit then their meeting with Arsenal on the weekend of March 16 will be postponed. Defeat at the hands of Bristol City would see that fixture go ahead, with the Gunners already out of the FA Cup.

How Wolves got on, in what proved to be a tough game for them, is the focus of this latest Scout Notes article.

Wolves 3-2 Shrewsbury

Goals: Matt Doherty x2 (£5.3m), Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.2m)

Assists: Jonny x2 (£4.3m), Doherty

Wolves’ FA Cup replay was all about Matt Doherty (£5.3m) as he had a hand in every single one of their goals against Shrewsbury Town. It was another match that demonstrated his huge attacking potential, as he scored twice and provided the assist for Ivan Cavaleiro‘s (£5.2m) winning goal.

His opener was a back-post header after Shrewsbury goalkeeper Steve Arnold could not collect a cross from Jonny (£4.3m). His second was a hugely important strike as it ensured Wolves did not go into the half-time break 2-1 down at home to League One opposition.

While some Fantasy managers might be disappointed that Doherty saved what was, effectively, a double-figure haul for the FA Cup, performances like this just continue to highlight what an asset he is for our teams this season. With the wind in his sails, plus returns in both of his last two Premier League matches, he is in the perfect form to deliver again at home to Newcastle on Monday night.

Left-back Jonny was also an important player for Wolves in their FA Cup tie as he provided the assist for both of Doherty’s goals. It was another match in which Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were most threatening down the flanks, thanks to the ability of their attacking full-backs. If it were not for them, things might have been more embarrassing for them on Tuesday night.

Nuno rotated his front line to bring in Helder Costa (£4.7m) and Cavaleiro flanking Adama Traoré (£5.1m), the three of them struggling to show any rhythm. As a side note, that seems to be a recurring theme for those three players this season, which helps us feels secure in ongoing starts for Raúl Jiménez (£6.7m) and Diogo Jota (£6.0m) who were benched and rested respectively.

“We were ahead with the first moment, the first shot on goal we scored, but after it, we kept the ball with no real threat and when they scored we started playing, but it was always rushed and not the best way to play football. We got the job done, not in the best way, the way we want to do. The boys, after they got scared, started playing – they know there’s no easy games in football.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

Perhaps of some concern when it comes to the return of FPL at the weekend, is Wolves’ defence. With Newcastle coming to Molineux on Monday night, there will be plenty of managers starting Rui Patrício (£4.5m), Ryan Bennett (£4.1m) or Willy Boly (£4.6m) in the hope of capitalising on a clean sheet. The fact that Wolves conceded twice to a side operating two divisions below them, plus one clean sheet in eight Premier League matches, might make owners of those assets think twice.

That may be especially because the first choice back-five were all in place for the FA Cup fourth-round replay. With Jonny and Doherty on the flanks, it was the usual centre-back trio of Conor Coady (£4.5m), Bennett and Boly. The only difference in that department was that goalkeeper Patrício was given the night off, with John Ruddy (£4.3m) deputising. The stand-in shot-stopper was to blame for Shrewsbury’s second goal, the ball slipping through his hands. Meanwhile, Wolves were also quite vulnerable from set pieces on the night too.

“After we scored so early, I thought that we could have play better, then we allowed them to get back in the game. It made our task very harder.” – Nuno

There was a change in the middle of the park as Romain Saïss (£4.2m) and Morgan Gibbs-White (£4.3m) came in for Rúben Neves (£4.9m) and Joao Moutinho (£5.2m). The latter has become something of a potential differential option in recent weeks so it was pleasing for Fantasy managers eyeing him up to see nothing more than a 20-minute cameo for him.

Meanwhile, Neves’ presence on the bench confirms he is available for selection following a knock sustained against Everton on Saturday. Jota and Rúben Vinagre (£4.3m) were not risked with their issues though.

Wolves XI (3-4-3): Ruddy; Boly, Coady, Bennett; Jonny, Saïss, Gibbs-White, Doherty; Costa (Moutinho 69′), Traoré (Jiménez 77′), Cavaleiro (Ennis 88′).

Similar dilemma myself, it’s going to be either WB (who always bags a return when I bench him), Doherty or Rondón. Leaning towards Doherty ATM...

Is Hazard to Son worth (-4)?

It gives 3-3.5m in the bank which I could use to upgrade Jota to someone like KDB/Mane later.

I could also sell Son for Sterling when City’s fixtures improve from GW28.

It also gives me an option to get Higuain for Auba (around GW29 when both teams fixtures shift). I would be hestiant to double up if I kept Hazard.

The only downside I see is that if Hazard goes on some crazy run of scoring 10 goals till end of the season.
Feel like if I keep him now I’ll be stuck with him.

Really confused. Would appreciate your thoughts! 🙂

Have a look at the ticker from 28-31: plenty of the teams at the top of the ticker in 28-31 play in 31.

I'm not sayin it's sexy, but it's far from a bad strategy (though one that's more suited to a WC in 32 than a FH)

Think it is a false economy.

Just my opinion, but you can get away with the 'downgrade' option in defense as the whole backline earns its clean sheets e.g. TAA benefits from VVD and AR. On goals, the indiviudal is key. With Auba on penalties and the main threat/focus, Laca will pick up the Auba scraps (cue Laca hatrick this weekend).

Summary: downgrades work in defense where the team is key; in attack, the individual is worth paying for

    Speroni (Etheridge)
Doherty - WB - Robertson - Bednarek (Danilo)

If a fantasy game impacts your mental health and causes rifts and mood swings which impact your family life then I suggest you take a long hard look at yourself in the mirror.

I may get in trouble again because people won't agree but in my mind it has to be said. I am tired of people whinging and complaining about how the game is hurting their personal life and yet they continue to play the game week in and week out.

My advice is to stop playing, you spend countless hours wasting away your days and months for what? It's definitely not enjoyment by the sounds of it. You can stop at any time but you continue to carry on. To me it sounds more like an addiction which is actually quite serious.

Instead of making excuses admit there is an issue and tackle it otherwise it's a never ending cycle. You will come back the next day, next week, next season and it will never stop.

I myself have suffered frustration but I keep it here, I have boundaries. What you should never ever do is start taking it out on loved ones or go into moods which can in turn impact my family's feeling that is just outrageous behavior. If it comes to that point you really really need to stop playing the game. Block the site, sell your laptop whatever it is take action.

For some it’s not that simple..

Different personalities have different thought processes and consequent outcomes. People use this as platform to recover from gambling addictions and the thirst for success is the same. If you don’t succeed it’s a violent and depressive cycle which only certain people can attest to. I get how people can dismiss it as nothing but for others it means everything.

I remember benching Ramsey’s 21 pointer last season and was in a dark state of depression all week - Sane (c) no show has me in a similar frame of mind. If people are passionate so much about something then who are you to dismiss their feelings!?

Not having a go at you, it’s just the counter argument

Yeah our brains are physical objects with physical connections. Every thought and choice we make is determined by a sequence of firing neurons. In a way, free will doesn't exist.

So criticism and telling someone to stop doing something doesn't really work, if anything it just creates more negative connections in the brain. Kindness is always better 🙂

What you forgetting to note is that people spend a lot of time, effort , emotion and even money in some instances. Fantasy can be a very serious part of someone's life after all they've invested. May not be easy to just drop the game after all that effort. Not everyone thinks the same way you do , and not everyone deals with things the same way you do.

For me the highs far out weigh the lows. It’s a great part of my life anwouldnt want to lose it because I get moody or down about it sometimes. Imagine giving up on everything that got you in a mood. I wouldn’t be married, have a job, even watch football itself.

Morning FFS. I am sure that this has been raised but what's with the Bernardo Silva quote again? Isn't this a repeat of something Pep said back in August?

It seems a bit strange that is was posted at 1am and, if incorrect, is kind of misleading when people are planning their transfers for the coming deadline.

    Thanks!

Like I say it would be great if true, but scout tweets with quotes are (always?) about recent pressers. Six months is a long time in football, and I wonder how useful it would be for FFS to recycle this now.

Shaw was very unlucky not to get an assist at the weekend, put in a fantastic cross to Rashford which he headed just over. I think you can expect at least some attacking returns from Shaw until the end of the season, but nothing like Doherty attacking returns.

One thing to note is United look so much better on the left side than on the right, with Shaw, Pogba and Martial/Whoever combining well and creating chances. Plus, I think Shaw has a licenance to get forward as Matic covers that left side effectively.

I would expect Shaw to continue putting in good deliveries and simple short passes which can lead to an assists.

A: Son + Auba (c) + Camarassa (starts for me in gw27 but benched thereafter)

OK, here's my tuppence on the blanks / doubles

I think that there's a gaping hole in many of these 31 / 33 planners, and that's that they're focusing too much upon the number of likely games vs. the quality of the likely games.

GW31. The most 'interesting' fixtures in 31 are FUL v LIV / BUR v LEI / BOU v NEW / WHU v HUD / BRI v CAR ..... and perhaps EVE v CHE if Utd beat Chelsea in the cup. I completely lose my erection when looking at that.

GW33. While one could FH in 32 and play your 31 team again in 33, have a shuftie at who the '31' teams have in 33 (blanks pending, ofc) and it starts falling apart: there are almost no juicy games for the 31 teams .... and there are quite a few fixture shifts that are worth dealing with in 32/33

IMHO it's too easy to focus on starts / bums on seats instead of maximizing points. And so:

Prepare for 31 with FT's and a cheeky hit (or two, Rodney)
    WC in 32
    FH in 33
Prepare for a BB in 35 with FT's

For those who hold a TC like myself, then hope like hell for an extra DGW for Chelsea, or TC Salah at home to Hudds in 36

It’s not the quality of the games that matter in 31 & 33, it’s the points you get more than the average of your OR rivals

The WC in 32 is put on the shelf with the FH in 33 and your next transfer is in 34 and your team could be smashed by injury or change in form.

Also you are generating a wild card team for GW32 doubles, which will be completely different team needed for GW35 doubles which means lots of hits if you want to maximise double game week players in 35.

It will be quite easy to plan for 31& 33, the FH maximises the doubles in 32 and the WC in 34 maximises the doubles in 35.

I see so many issues with your strategy 😉

      1. danishdynamite
        • 13 Years
        5 years, 2 months ago

I'm expecting around 3 doubles in 35 and, obviously, it'll be some of those who had doubles in 32

        1. Hotdogs for Tea
          • 8 Years
          5 years, 2 months ago

Free Hit in 32 and WC in 34 allows you two specific bespoke teams for each double gameweek to maximise team selection, no compromise, no hits, no risks except for GW34 team ... I like the sound of that 🙂

            • 13 Years
            5 years, 2 months ago

I agree, but it's at the cost of 33

Which admittedly isn't a great gw

So yeah - fair points: it's a puzzle with no glaringly obvious solution

            1. Hotdogs for Tea
              • 8 Years

Every plan has issues, and I will decide after the doubles are announced, but in the meantime I will strengthening my bench and cheaper places in my team with those players that do not blank in 31 & 33 ... Leicester Bournemouth etc

    5. pingissimus

But both Liverpool and Bournemouth have very good 31/3 fixtures - that's what I expect the core of my team to be.

If Chelsea go out then their fixtures look fine too and it's all sorted for a 31/3 run through with a FH in 32.

Do agree though that it's about quality and not quantity.
