The emotional side of Fantasy Football management cannot be underestimated. 

As the Scoutcast’s discussion on mental health shows, many managers can struggle in their everyday life when a bad Gameweek strikes. 

This episode features some powerful accounts of the impact being a Fantasy manager can have on the community’s lives, from sleepless nights to depression. Az, Joe and David also reveal how Fantasy Football has affected their emotional wellbeing over the years.

Recorded midway through a season-defining first Double Gameweek of 2018/19, the crew also look back on their decision to shun Manchester City’s hat-trick hero Sergio Aguero. 

City assets feature again in our community questions section, as the crew assess likely rotation, especially around future Double Gameweeks. 

Elsewhere, Chelsea’s new-look attack is also weighed up.

The crew then finish off with a detailed look at their Gameweek 26 transfer moves, captaincy decisions, differential picks and clean sheet prospects.

    Relatively common move under consideration - however I'm looking at it from a hit perspective.

    Haz to Son for a -4 this week.

    Haz has (lol) City - Blank - Spurs
    Son has Lei - Bur - Che

    If I don't do it this week, I will do it next week. Just trying to work out if the hit is worth it.
    Son on a strong bout of form and Chelsea a bit of an unknown. However, Haz nearly always key...

    Unrealistic expectations

    Just tuning into this week’s Scoutcast on podcast catchup – what a terrific talking point about mental health issues associated with playing FPL discussed in detail and sincerity by Joe, Az and David. Having endured a truly painful season so far, I have found myself questioning on multiple occasions - why actually bother?

    My Eureka moment today is that really, my dissatisfaction this season (and last), is mainly down to unrealistic expectations. The enjoyment I get from FPL is all about crafting strategy, being “in-the-know”, a thirst for numeral statistics, and a deeply unhealthy competitive streak that has drawn comparisons with Sergio Ramos in my office mini-league…

    This is my fourth season, and prior to this football played a relatively limited part in my life. Going to the odd game – watching Gazzetta Football Italia, Match of the Day, FA Cup finals – all pretty low-key. In less than 4 years, I have transformed into an obsessive. Whilst it was office mates that initially introduced me to FPL, the timescale for my growing obsession has largely coincided with diminishing time spend on other hobbies, in the most part due to a growing family.

    My second season was comfortably my best. I had already created my own fixtures matrix during my first season, but having discovered FFS, I began to absorb the advice of many fellow users, experienced and unexperienced. It was a Pandora’s Box of a discovery. Knowledge, opinions, advise coursed through my FPL being, and I soared to a GW38 climax of 1,006th in the world.

    Today I remembered a post I read during that season – I can’t remember who posted it, but it essentially stated:

    “If you are an engaged manager on FFS, finishing inside the top 10k should be a given.”

    This has in retrospect, haunted me this season and last.

    Last season, I started dreadfully – failing captaincy selection week after week, injuries upon injuries…but I climbed – finally cracking the top 100k in GW34 and closing on an all-things-considered, acceptable 58k.

    This season has felt worse. Sure a few injuries have caused a few issues, but not really on the same scale as last season. My captaincy picks have been solid – easily exceeding last season’s returns. But, I’ve had some absolutely catastrophic gameweek’s this season – 46pts in GW1, 35 pts from my WC in GW16 (pre WC squad scored 91…), and this week, a mere 45 pts accrued with Sane© are particular stand outs.

    I’ve made mistakes. Some of them have been ridiculously costly. But at the end of the day, I’m not sure I’d reverse many of the decisions I’ve made. Perhaps I just have to accept it’s not my season. Be at peace with the laughable returns. Try hard to find some perspective.

      That is all you can do mate, do your best not to let the stress and or frustration take over you. Take a step back and go again the following week. At the end of the day, despite how much time we as fpl managers spend reviewing statistics, gathering information and stuff, it is only just a game, and as such we should not let it interfere with other more important aspects of life, namely, family.

      This used to be true but nowadays with the competition and stats available and more and more players paying attention to things like price rises, I don't think 10k is a given at all. A good manager with average luck should be able to make top 50k, with good fortune top 25k, but top 10k and better, nowadays, luck plays a fairly large part.

      And this is coming from a player with 4 top 10k finishes in a row. Not gonna deny how much luck mattered in those runs.

      I can tell you now that two decisions has cost me a 50k ranking compared to the 350k ranking I am now.

      Mahrez instead of Sterling for Southampton (h) and Alli instead of Son over Christmas, and if you add to that Sane instead of Aguero this week, those three key decision are the difference between mediocrity and a top 10k position.

      Puts it all in context, don't let the game get you down.

      I think this is the biggest piece of garbage peddled on here and on Twitter. Who came up with 10k? Not sure why that is seen as some good benchmark. You are no where near the top anyway with those top 10k finishes. I mean getting on the leaderboard or even top 100 I can understand, but all those 4k, 5k, 7k ranks are as equally worthless as 30k, 40k, 50k, 100k ranks. It's just people making themselves feel better about a mediocre season by adjusting expectations. And it's ok to not finish in the leaderboard. It is a hard game.

      As long as I win the mini-leagues I'm in, I'm happy. That's honestly all there is to it. May be I'm in the minority but I almost never blame myself for picking a player because it's a game about picking players and it's my team and I can pick whomever I want. Why should I be depressed if Kane blanks at home to Cardiff? I mean, I hate him for that, but the emotion during the game is anger and not sadness or disappointment. I think I listened to Az say that he mulls over what he could have done differently after the blanks, but I think that's his biggest mistake. There's nothing he should have done differently. He made a move because he found it exciting at the time and because he thought it'll get him more points. Why does that feeling, emotion before the game mean nothing?

          Why not Luiz to Montoya or another low priced playing defender and then Richarlison to Son? I'm not sure you're gaining anything with 4 big defenders when you could have that front 7.

      Some ignorance maybe, but the vast majority of the posting has been overwhelmingly positive.

      I think it's shown the best of FFS users - the mods haven't had to remove any content (so far) and the borderline posts have responses to them that are measured, thoughtful, and supportive.

      Sure, FFS should be about Fantasy Football and these are delicate topics, but it's been an important conversation to have today. It's not something we talk about all the time here but the way it's been addressed is a good thing, not a bad one!

        If Sane starts today, he is likely to be rotated and not start vs Chelsea. If he doesn't, that means he is dropped.

        And I have so few bgw31 players that I probably have to take hits anyway. So it won't matter much if I take one now for Kun > Auba and then save.

    Feel that a lot of the problems surrounding people reacting adversely to bad fpl weeks are that they don't enjoy football for what it is. First and foremost, I'm a football fan. I love the game, always have, its nuances, its drama and its proud working class history. I want to see Derby lose, Liverpool lose and Forest win. Secondary to all of that is this albeit very enjoyable game. I feel many on here and God forsaken other social media sites are in it for the game only, the stats and heaven forbid the bragging rights. That's all so hollow for me.

    It's all down to perspective and have you got it. I maybe made it sound like I did there but I don't always.

    My final words on this are never trust any member of the hindsight brigade and anybody who constantly brags. And finally if you're not enjoying it, clear your head, get mindful and do something you will enjoy because it's a short life, people.

          Bou won't push them so deep as Leicester. Besides, Bou aren't as good at defending either. I think Shaqiri will give you returns in that match. And I don't blame you for bringing him in, I considered it myself when TAA got injured as it seemed likely that Milner or Hendo would cover RB, hence making it more likely that Shaqiri played CM.
