Scoutcast Episode 284 – Emotional

The emotional side of Fantasy Football management cannot be underestimated.

As the Scoutcast’s discussion on mental health shows, many managers can struggle in their everyday life when a bad Gameweek strikes.

This episode features some powerful accounts of the impact being a Fantasy manager can have on the community’s lives, from sleepless nights to depression. Az, Joe and David also reveal how Fantasy Football has affected their emotional wellbeing over the years.

Recorded midway through a season-defining first Double Gameweek of 2018/19, the crew also look back on their decision to shun Manchester City’s hat-trick hero Sergio Aguero.

City assets feature again in our community questions section, as the crew assess likely rotation, especially around future Double Gameweeks.

Elsewhere, Chelsea’s new-look attack is also weighed up.

The crew then finish off with a detailed look at their Gameweek 26 transfer moves, captaincy decisions, differential picks and clean sheet prospects.

This Scoutcast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday evening. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

Easily B for me. Best player, excellent blank games if that makes sense and involved in all West Ham's best play. They are outrageously unpredictable though.

If benchable. Id also consider Fraser.

There are some hateful fixtures in there but you’d back Bournemouth to score in a few and once 30 rolls around he’ll be gold dust from then on in.

I’m torn between him and Anderson. I’m just not. Onvinced the Hammers are going to put Fulham away. It has derby upset written all over it.

FPL is a game. There are numerous issues in the world that can cause true angst, but having FPL affect a person shows a decided lack of perspective.

Having that opinion shows a decided lack of awareness about mental health.

Not at all. Mental health is a huge issue, but having FPL become a stress point means it is time to walk away. This should be a game and place to relieve stress, not cause it.

Spot on. It does show a naive and simplistic view of something that is often far from it. It can often be those seemingly silly and insignificant things that can start people into a downward spiral. Especially when its something you are passionate about or heavily engaged in. It doesn't matter that "its just a game." Our emotional state is more fragile and susceptible to outside influence than perhaps you may realise.

I for one have certainly felt a slump in my mood after a really bad week where everything seems to go against you (like taking Son out before his 21 pointer!)

        1. KingOllie

But thats ok mate, because its literally your brain chemistry. If you didn't feel any negative feelings then i doubt you really care about the game (which is ok too).

Id say most of us on here DO care about the game and doing well - so to have highs and lows is perfectly normal (aslong as its not leading to drug abuse/relationship breakdowns)

Quite the opposite. But i do understand that Football in general is a tool for escapism for many.

You get physiological reactions to your team winning/losing. FPL is much the same if you are invested in it (along with any game/sport). So to claim that someone has no perspective on the world due to their actual brain chemistry is laughable.

What if I have a lot of money in minileagues, is FPL then just a game or is it a serious competition? Get a grip with your high horse nonsense.

It’s a healthy escape/buzz, it can create a similar highs as gambling, but without the money loss.

But you can’t have a highs without lows, but I think that’s what makes the game so entertaining for some is that it’s difficult and can’t be be perfected no matter how much analysis/effort you put in.

It’s only a bit of craic at the end of the day, and personally I’d rather worry about Sané started tonight than all the turmoil and corruption going on around the world. And that’s why I life the job and the wife, they were becoming distractions

Also bottomed... lots of options floating around in my head and can't decide. Already used one transfer to bring in Son for Hazard. 1 more FT.

    A) Rich > Mane, Kun > Aub (4 point hit)
    B) Kun > Aub next week Rich > Anderson
    C) Rich > Mane next week Kun > Aub

Basically boiling down to Anderson or Mane with a hit. Already own Salah and going for Mane allows me an easy route back to Hazard w/o dropping Salah (although I could drop Salah if I had Mane maybe)

He played as a left winger, with Monreal the left-back. One of Suarez's best positions is as an attacking left midfielder, so it'll be one to keep an eye on for Kolasinac owners, especially if Monreal establishes himself as Emery's favoured LB.

In regards to the podcast, honestly, i think people worry too much about overall rank. Personally i play the game to win my ML. Whether that means i finish 10K, or 200K, i dont care. As long as im #1 in my ML. Winner receives £300, as there was a £25 buy in. Thats more of a prize than 99% of the top 10K will receive. Yes, It’s nice to finish high overall, but it isnt the be all of the game. The main reason to play is for fun, and a nice competition with friends. I dont understand why people get so torn up on rank history, who cares what randomers think about your history?

    Just seen the news.
If we could do this sensitively, what do we think on Nantes now demanding the transfer fee for Sala.
Make sense as a deal had been made, or should Cardiff refuse as he never made it?

That's what the link I posted just above is - wanted to just leave it in there without any opinions.

As I understand it, Cardiff plan to honour the contract but are waiting until all the facts from the flight incident are established. So the article just paints Nantes in an insensitive light, but I imagine it will be a non-issue.

I think Cardiff has to pay, eventhough it’s quite a blow for them.

Or maybe they could decide Cardiff only has to play half of it or sth, as a gentlemen’s agreement.

Yep. I never even considered this would be an issue, and I doubt there's any dispute between the clubs. Everyone involved knows what they are accountable for, financially. Just let them get on with it instead of trying to sensationalise the paperwork we know little about. I just hope us plebs don't fall for it, but judging by some YouTube comments I've read, it seems people want to rule like a King, dishing out punishments and settling disputes how they see fit.

I think a combination of the prem, FA, Sky, BT and other interested parties should step in and settle it. It would be a good gesture after the millions that have been made from football....and dignified.

Both clubs (as businesses) should be insured against something like that happening. Guess it’s now a fight over which one has to invoke their respective policy.

Mmmm...dunno...maybe. I don’t suppose too much time has been invested in the thought process. Sounds like it could get messy and very undignified if it came to scrapping over it.

Let’s face it 15 mill in the grand scheme of football as a whole isn’t actually a lot of money. I would prefer a solution that protects the family and keeps it out of the headlines.

I'm sure I've read about footballers being insured before, for some reason Michael Owen comes to mind as one of the first to do this.
Pretty sure I've seen stories of footballers not allowed to do things such a ride motorbikes, or go skiing as it invalidates insurance.

Individuals insuring themselves maybe, but I doubt a club would pay to insure transfer fees they have paid in case the player dies - it's too niche.

I really don't know, but is it any different to how life insurance for the average person? I have life insurance through my employer, if I died doing something work related I'm covered up to £1m.

I've read and heard that Cardiff have £16m worth of personal accident insurance to cover things like this. When you factor in loss of commercial revenue Cardiff will get the full claim and pay off the three £5m instalments in full. I'd assume they are just waiting for the insurance to come through after investigations.

Personally I think it's great that the guys have discussed mental health as obviously this is a taboo subject in life in general which is coming more and more into the open.

Being a dad to two young kids, a husband to a wife with various health problems, and having a stressful job and money worries, all I can say is that if FPL is your biggest stress in life then lucky you!

I play FPL to take my mind off all the real stress in my life.

Maybe it is affecting them more as they are in the spotlight and perceived to be FPL gurus so there comes an added weight of expectation. (if you have a bad season)

As Mark found out maybe it's time to step back and focus on other things in life.

I swear by the MOTD challenge most weeks. My wife doesn't get annoyed at me checking my phone, and MOTD actually becomes exciting!

    Cheers all and chins up!

I'm definitely going to give the MOTD challenge a go at some point.

Finding it's starting to impact my relationship with my girlfriend as I'm often neglecting her.

Something simple like doing the MOTD challenge hopefully can change that, it's just adjusting to not constantly checking my phone that will be the tricky bit.

I agree it's good to talk about it.

Lots of us spend too much time on FPL.

It can become addictive and then it's meaning becomes disproportionate due to the obsession.

You're correct, there are much more important things to attend to but that's the nature of addiction.

    Now then,

I’m in the Sun game too and chasing the leader
however it’s hard to get different players that he
    hasn’t already got.
I’m getting rid of Hazard, and need a mid that he
won’t think to get. I already have Sterling and Pog,
with Salah, Firm & Auba up front.
He has Mané, Sane, Haz & Sterling so I can’t bring
    in the popular Sané.
So my picks are getting limited. I can only think of
    D. Silva, KDB or F.Anderson (fixtures wise) to play
    catch up.
OR do I ditch one of my front 3 for Son as none of the
top 3 have him and I KEEP Haz??

Apologise for the waffle but I need ideas, theories, nouce....

    Cheers
