Scoutcast Episode 284 – Emotional

The emotional side of Fantasy Football management cannot be underestimated.

As the Scoutcast’s discussion on mental health shows, many managers can struggle in their everyday life when a bad Gameweek strikes.

This episode features some powerful accounts of the impact being a Fantasy manager can have on the community’s lives, from sleepless nights to depression. Az, Joe and David also reveal how Fantasy Football has affected their emotional wellbeing over the years.

Recorded midway through a season-defining first Double Gameweek of 2018/19, the crew also look back on their decision to shun Manchester City’s hat-trick hero Sergio Aguero.

City assets feature again in our community questions section, as the crew assess likely rotation, especially around future Double Gameweeks.

Elsewhere, Chelsea’s new-look attack is also weighed up.

The crew then finish off with a detailed look at their Gameweek 26 transfer moves, captaincy decisions, differential picks and clean sheet prospects.

I really want Son but looking at Liverpool’s next 3 home games, it is tempting to go with Mane.
        Thoughts? Go simple or punt?

Maybe get Son and the Son to Mane.

do you have Salah or Firmino? If so, Son may be the better choice. Pool look out of sorts, but of course they can explode anytime.

I have Salah. But the Liverpool attacking double up has worked in the past.

I’d like both but Son is the more consistent. You’ve probably already missed Mané’s purple patch.

This dgw has not been favourable to me it’s true, but that’s not the reason why I’d like to see an end to the chips in fpl. Surely one decision in one gw shouldn’t have the effect on your overall rank that it does? It makes a mockery of all the planning you do when one decision can put you back weeks and weeks. It lessens the skill factor even further and increases the luck element. I’d like to see the chips scrapped altogether or perhaps stop them from being used in a dgw, the latter being the most preferable. Down with the chips I say!

This is why I like TFF. No chips, no captains, no bonus. Just about picking players over a longer term period and being patient.

The problem with your dissertation is that a complete and sound argument for implementing strategy around the chips make the game more fun, unpredictable, and unlike any other fantasy sport.

Unpredictable? From now until the end of the season everyone will be buying the same players, thanks to the chips.

Why? Liverpool most shaky at back they have been al season, arsenal are awful at the back. You would be picking both of them for pure attacking returns. Digne with set pieces gives you that. Not worth it

Excellent Scoutcast. I stopped caring about / watching football a long time ago yet I still play FPL, it is an addiction for sure. Decided to make this season the last one - no matter what the outcome - and spend the 10+ hours per week essentially being wasted on FPL doing more constructive activities. Work out more, self educate more, study more etc. It's been coming anyway but this SC has been an eye opener.

            Cheers.

            Dear Scoutcast Team

As a qualified psychologist with over 10 years of practitioner experience - I really have to commend you guys for a fantastic episode addressing the mental health aspects associated with playing this ridiculously addictive and gloriously enjoyable time-wasting game we love.

Having listened to the podcast for many years it took me completely and pleasantly by surprise when you chose to address mental health this week. It was brave, it was progressive, and it was handled with a sensitivity, pragmatism and rationality that I thought was spot on.

Mental health, like physical health, is something we deal with daily - we have good days and bad days - times when we’re feeling fine and times when we’re not. It’s part of life, part of us and is nothing to be ashamed of as a discussion point- talking about it is normal.

Gaming - be it fantasy football or any other can bring incredibly healthy benefits - it’s escapism, it’s sociable, it’s challenging and most of all it can be fun. But with all things we care about it can affect us negatively just as it does positively. That’s normal and to be expected and accepted. The trick is to catch it before it takes you to a darker place than is necessary, that can affect you and those around you. Catch it and keep it in check.

I myself often struggle to see it as ‘just a game’ - as it’s a real passion of mine - but ultimately that’s what it is - and the beautiful thing about it - even when you triple Captain a 1 point Sane - there’s always next Saturday - and you know - just like me - that as soon as that whistle goes on the first match of the weekend , last week’s scores are forgotten.

Play on my friends and keep talking about ALL aspects of this brilliant game.

            🙂

On Monday night I had a dream/nightmare that Nigel Martyn got injured and my other goal keeper was Speroni and not playing. I needed to take a hit to replace him. I think I’ll go back into retirement from FPL.

Just listened to the latest episode. I’m a long term listener and big fan. Don’t post that much.
Just wanted to congratulate the scoutcast guys on opening up and discussing mental health especially what might be seen as in a trivial context. The fact is fantasy football is a part of life and as with any part of life it can effect your mental health. Cudos. And keep talking.
