Son leaves it late as Spurs flatter to deceive against spirited Leicester

Another Gameweek, another laboured victory for Spurs, whose win over Leicester was much more than a 3-1 scoreline suggests.

The home side were certainly clinical at Wembley Stadium but had to dig deep to hold off a Foxes onslaught, especially in the second half.

The game that featured Gameweek 26’s most popular player in the transfer market is the focus of this latest Scout Notes article.

Spurs 3-1 Leicester

Goals: Davison Sánchez (£5.8m), Christian Eriksen (£9.3m), Son Heung-min (£8.8m) | Jamie Vardy (£8.8m)

Assists: Eriksen, Fernando Llorente (£5.7m), Moussa Sissoko (£4.9m)

Son Heung-min (£8.8m) left it late but still managed to reward his large number of new owners with a goal against Leicester on Sunday afternoon. The South Korean was the most transferred-in player ahead of Gameweek 26 with over 550,000 managers signing him up. The game itself was frustrating viewing for his 21% ownership as he was unable to have as much impact on proceedings as he would have liked.

Son was top of the charts for goal attempts in the game, but only one of them was in the box and just one was on target. That was his stoppage-time goal which would have been perhaps harder to miss than to score as he had the freedom of the Wembley pitch to bear down on goal and slot past Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m). Outside of that, the FPL midfielder had few clear cut chances, and it would be easy to argue that he was fortunate to score yet again. However, the player himself would tell you his late goal was just desserts after he was brought down in the box by Harry Maguire (£5.4m) in the first half but was booked for diving instead.

“It was a clear penalty. It was the same referee but now I don’t know how he has measured the situation. It is so difficult. I am a person that always accepts the mistake but I think it was so strange the situation today. It was so clear the position today with Sonny, the action, but it wasn’t clear the position of Maddison when he was on the floor. I think it is unbelievable.” – Mauricio Pochettino

The star performer from a Fantasy perspective was Christian Eriksen (£9.3m) who got himself a goal and an assist against Leicester. He made up for a particularly poor performance against Newcastle, in which he did not create a single chance, by offering a spread of Fantasy potential this time around. He played two key passes and had two efforts on goal, combining for his first double-figure haul since Gameweek 19. With ongoing talks about his future at the club, it was a timely display from Eriksen.

“We’ve spoken a lot about that, now we need to keep going, for him to continue performing in his best and of course I told you before he’s such an important player for us. We’ll see what happens. I think I’ve used a few metaphors in the past about Christian, remember related with my family and my dog. He needs to feel the freedom to take his decisions. I think keeping going, so happy with him and we’ll see what happens in the end.” – Mauricio Pochettino

However, as already mentioned, it was a game that was not fully reflected in the scoreline. Spurs did not warrant a 3-1 victory while Leicester really should have scored more than they did. The visitors finished the match with an expected goals (xG) score of 3.12 to their hosts’ 1.08. Spurs had more of the possession (53% to 47%), but the Foxes were considerably more purposeful with the ball. They had more than triple the shots in the box and twice as many big chances as Spurs.

Harvey Barnes (£5.5m) has excited since coming back to Leicester following a loan spell at West Bromwich Albion but he was missing the clinical edge at Wembley. No player who started the match had more efforts in the box than him, but only one of his three shots there was on target. At the opposite end of the experience-scale was Jamie Vardy (£8.8m) who was surprisingly benched for the encounter but was introduced in the 59th minute. He was being lined up to come on before James Maddison (£6.6m) won a penalty, but was rushed on once it was there to be taken. With his first touch of the match, the 32-year-old had his effort saved by Hugo Lloris (£5.4m), who proved one of the key performers for Spurs given Leicester’s spirited display. To Vardy’s credit, he managed to finish the match joint-top with Barnes for shots in the box, despite playing just 31 minutes.

“I think we are talking about one of the best keepers in the world, with a lot of experience and having played a lot of games here at Tottenham. I think he’s showing his value and of course, in the decisive moments like today, I think it was so important to help the team achieve the three points. Of course, his quality is there and we cannot doubt that.” – Mauricio Pochettino

“I could have waited (to make the change). He was ready to come on and I gave him the opportunity to shoot the penalty. I said to him if he felt up to it he can take it, but it is not just the penalty, the whole game we have had all the possibilities to lead this game or get back into the game. We don’t know. Perhaps it was not a good thing or a good thing, we don’t know. Yes, normally Jamie is the penalty taker. I gave him the opportunity to take this penalty.” – Claude Puel

Aside from the penalty, Maddison was at the heart of much of Leicester’s play. He created more chances than any other player on the Wembley pitch, and was, in fact, the top creator for the whole of Gameweek 26, no other player beating his total of seven key passes.

Ricardo Pereira (£5.3m) was also useful as he pushed on from his right-back position. Maddison was the only one to manage more created chances than the Portuguese in Sunday’s lunch-time kick-off.

There certainly seems to be enough potential shown by Leicester in recent performances to suggest that once the fixtures ease up they could be the source of some shrewd investments. Pereira especially has been targetted by many as someone to purchase from Gameweek 27 onwards as it’s Crystal Palace (home), Brighton (home), Watford (away), Fulham (home), Burnley (away) and Bournemouth (home) up next for the Foxes.

“It’s the same feeling after our game against United. Another time today, we made good collective performance, with good quality and good moves. We hurt them, without finding efficiency. It’s a big shame. It was not a fair result, but it’s our fault because we have had a lot of chances since the kick-off. It’s a mixed feeling with the thought that we showed a lot of quality. It’s encouraging. We should have led this game, we should have got back in this game. “We need results to give us good balance.” – Claude Puel

Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-3-1-2): Lloris; Rose (Walker-Peters 88′), Vertonghen, Sánchez, Trippier; Skipp (Alderweireld 71′), Winks, Sissoko; Eriksen; Llorente (Wanyama 80′), Son.

Chelsea XI (4-1-4-1): Schmeichel; Chilwell, Maguire, Evans, R Pereira; Ndidi; Barnes (Okazaki 88′), Maddison, Tieleman, Ghezzal (Iheanacho 72′); D Gray (Vardy 59′).

My mate and ML rival has gone from 224,000 to 28,000 in TWO WEEKS.

And he still has Bennett and Jiminez to play. Absolute madness.

His ID is 122562 if you want to have a nose.

  2. Mid-priced midfielders: who are the best picks?

With lots of transfers, changes to formation, and blanks and doubles upcoming the mid-priced midfielders are now getting some attention.

A downgrade from an expensive mid (eg. Sane, Hazard) to a mid-priced mid allows an upgrade to a premium forward (eg. Kane, Aguero, Aubameyang). A switch to 8 attacking players to be rotated according to fixtures, BGWs, and DGWs, could be a good strategy to deal with the tricky upcoming fixture list.

Who is on your radar in the mid-priced midfielder bracket?
Anderson is coming out of bad fixtures and has poor underlying statistics, but faces 4 of the bottom 5 in the next 5, with 3 of those at home.
Maddison is also coming out of bad fixtures and has a great run going forward, as well as a favourable BGW schedule.
What are your thoughts on Richarlison?
Is Jota an option, or are the other Wolves players better bets?

Who else are you looking at?

I'd put Eriksen, as well as Son and Pogba, in the premium bracket. Over 8.5m, for me, is premium

Why Jota over Maddison then? Or over Anderson? Or over Fraser?

          fair enough mate

why would maddison even be a consideration? he's done nothing to even suggest consideration in my opinion, harvey barnes if anyone is the one to consider from leicester - he looked extremely lively

jota over anderson/ fraser simply due to my team structure

want to bring arnie as my forward which rules out anderson on price, and jota has better fixtures than fraser after 27 and wolves look particularly good right now

Maddison has had really tough fixtures TOT, cpl, che, MCI, CAR, eve, SOU, wol, liv, MUN tot. 6 of the top 6 in the last 10 and Wolves away.

Yes, he hasn't performed in the other games but he is involved but the underlying numbers aren't bad. Now he has only one of the top 10 in the next 8 (Watford away). He also has a fixture in 31 and 33 and could be on pens when Vardy isn't on the field

maybe, but take a look at his xA of his high key-passes games

spurs: 7 key passes, 0.20 xA
                saints: 8 key passes, 0.20 x1

never broaches past 0.4xA in any of the last 10 games. meanwhile someone like gross had 10 key passes, 1.38xA in a game.

Mads has a decent shooting record though

There's a number of decent midfield choices but I'm looking at Arnie too, maybe switch to a 3-4-3 or go for a strong front 8. Currently have Kamara as my 3Fwd.

            Could do either:
            A) Richarlison to cheap mid (-4)
            B) Richarlison to Jota + Digne to 3.8 Def (-8)

With B) I can just bench Arnie in gw28 when they play City but gw29 is more tricky:
Salah (v eve) Mane (v eve) Pogba (v SOU) Son (v ARS), Jota (v hud)
Aguero (v bou) Rashford (v SOU) Arnie (v NEW)

Anyway this is my current thinking, got ages till the next deadline to decide.

Sorry I know this is a discussion about midfielders but there are also options like Arnie, Jimenez, Rashford and this could be a moment to switch to 3-4-3 for those currently on a 3-5-2

I'm considering Martial. A Man Utd triple up (already own Pogba, Rashford) concerns me a little, but fixtures post Liverpool look good - cry / SOU / ars. There may be rotation but I'd still put him ahead of Felipe Anderson, Maddison etc. Jota also on the radar.

I was so close to putting Martial in. Actually think we had a chat about him last week mate. Made sure I had to FT's for GW 27 instead though on reflection, I could have still hit the button.

Anderson has to come into the equation for the Fulham game. May also feel punty getting Arnie up top instead. It's a shame Iwobi is the only Arsenal midfielder producing any kind of points. That said, Mikhi looked quite good on his return so he may well be a great differential

Yeah I remember saying you fancied Martial ahead of Fulham, good call. I was tempted by the Sterling > Son move but like you, held off to ensure I have 2 FT's, which worked out well.

Re Anderson, doesn't seem to be taking many shots but Fulham at home is about as good as they come. Fixtures post City are very strong too. I looked at Iwobi earlier, just a bit worried about his minutes with Mkhitaryan returning.

Anderson for the next 5, Fraser from 30 onwards (perhaps Brooks if back from injury) and Maddison GW 27-34, the fact he plays 27,31 & 33 is good and his returns in the corresponding fixtures earlier this season were: 1/-2(red card)/8/10/x/8/8/6 so i fancy some of that for 6.6m

There are some outstanding picks in this range... however there is are 2 teams that could upset the apple cart - Bournemouth and Wolves.

Bournemouth from week 28 onwards have about as massive a fixture swing as is technically possible - Wilson/King and Fraser/Brooks are surely 100% in everyones teams especially with week 31 on the horizon.

So I'll throw Fraser and Brooks straight in the mix.....
then you have Jota at wolves....

you have all the obvious candidates that I think Mid price is a bit of a misnoma - Pogba, Eriksen, Son etc..... I personally think that none of them are mid priced.

      My view
      Cheap - 4-5.5 mill
      Mid - 5.5-7.5 mill
      Expensive -7.5-9.5mill
      Premium - 9.5 plus

As for the names you mention - Richarlison - TROLL, Maddison - TROLL (plus we'll all gamble on Peirrera), Anderson - great shout and genuinely mid range, Son - too expensive when Kane comes back, Pogba - a poor man's Salah but surely if you haven't bought him by now he is no longer mid range, Jota - great choice but most of us have Jimenez and Doherty already and a triple up seems too much.

So if you are looking for mids in that middle bracket (erring on the side of cheap, cos frankly there is value to be had), surely it has to be

      1) Anderson
      2) Fraser (post 27)
      3) Jota (unless you already have Jimenez)
      4) Brooks (post 27)

      Where there isn't value
      1) Richarlison
      2) Maddison

I've seen a few people say Bournemouth from 28 look good... but they have Arsenal and City 28 and 29?! Am I reading the fixtures wrong or are they somehow good fixtures? I think you mean from 30.

It depends on our teams, of course. I think the combination of 31 and 33 just makes it more straightforward, and reduces the risk, if I do FH32

Nope - should be able to get 9 or 10 players easy for GW31 - and not crap ones either.

FHGW32 locked for me - I want to see what it like to have 11 hand picked, no strings attached double gameweekers taking to the field for one week.

Fair enough, I am thinking of building my team up for DGW32 with DGW players ( a fair few that I have already anyway), then using FH chip in GW31 and either BB or TC chip in 32

Not necessarily, surely it will be easier to navigate BGW 33 as likley to be fewer teams with no fixture and you will have more time to plan to navigate it. Then wildcard GW 34 and use either TC or BB for Gw35. A lot depends on the FA Cup games this weekend.

GW31 and GW33 are likely to have the same big teams blanking, so if you need it for GW31, GW33 is a problem. Better to use FT's with both those blank GW's in mind and FH the GW in-between.

It is possible to consider. I'll then be able to deal transfers over the next 5 weeks knowing I have the good picks and good captain choices. I see a contradiction on this forum as people are inclined to build GW31 with FTs but are still transferring in the likes of Auba, Jota or keeping Augero, Laporte. What am I missing here?

    6. Lazaretti
      • 6 Years

ManCity will play against Newport in FA cup so they will 99%:ly blank in GW31, if I understood that right? So Manc vs. ManU will be rescheduled? If you have let's say 4 players from those then you need to start prepare quite early for GW31.

Also Wolves plays against Bristol City they have good change going into next round in FA cup. CPL against Doncaster. So most likely you will have players from. Wolves (Doherty, Jimenez, Patricio), ManCity (ie. Aguero, KdB, Sterling, Laporte, Ederson) ManU, (Pogba, Shaw, Rashford, Martial) CPL (AWB) who might not have a game in GW31.

Do you want to get rid of them to prepare for GW31 or do you want to use FH chip? Watford and Brighton also having chance to go to the next round in FA cup.

Please correct me if I am wrong with thinking.

you are right. with the template right now, no way anyone can get 8 to 10 players without taking hits. People are still thinking of bringing Auba in now, and that's just 2 more wasted transfers. They will also want to hold on to assets such as City, Arsenal and Utd as long as possible. You will see hits galore when 31 comes, with people arguing that it's essentially a -2.

No you are spot on, which was the reason for my original post. I currently only have 4 players certain to play in GW31 (was 5 until Holebas got booked). This means with 5 free transfers the max I can get is 9 for GW 31. Too much tinkering needed

ML Rival and top of my league moved for Aguero and Higuain 3 weeks ago and i didnt and now i am jealous.

what are peoples thoughts on how to beat your rival when he has players you want?
is it madness to avoid these players and try to beat him using other forwards
or do you just bring in the same players regardless and beat him elsewhere?

    1. La Vida Latte
      • 14 Years

I would not focus too much on the rivals at this stage. Just focus on what would bring you the most points right now. Maybe when there are like 5-8 games left start do gamble (how much depends on how much you are behind). The first gamble I would make is to have a differential captain.

    2. Sensible Scouter

Basically, ignore your rival. Work out where the points are going to be, and your ML rival isn't going to be the best source. You might also end up chasing points (oh, they had xx player, who just got loads of points, I should have them.) If you have genuine 50:50 and you're playing catch-up, then compare, but apart from that it's probably not worth it.

Auba, kane, rashford are 3 easy alternatives. All depends on the gap you are chasing, if its big then u def cant pick the same if its small then u can and make up for it with 5/6 differentials around the edges and nudge him back 10-15 points per week if u pick well and captain well

Thanks for the great advice guys!

I will stick to my guns and just evaluate what I believe to be the best options to gain points. The guy is 140 pts ahead so I am thinking of defo getting aguero and then sticking with jimi who I hope can match higuain and build the rest of my team Better than his...

I’m not so sure anymore about Aubameyang if you consider he is much better at home then his remaining fixtures (from 28) are underwhelming.

Kane will be slow to come back in
And I have dropped rashford as I don’t think the double up is necessary over the next 5 fixtures (only saints is decent)

How would you rate these Leicester guys from a fpl-perspective for the next 5-7 games or so? In what order would you rate them?

    A) Vardy
    B) Maddisson
    C) Barnes
    D) Pereira
    E) Maguire
    F) Gray

Looks like a nice run of fixtures coming up from Leicester and would very much value your opinions.

Both, Pereira especially as he plays oop most of the time and seems involved in most goals and the occasional clean sheet. His ppm and price point makes him the most appealing imo. Maguire is a great differential from Pereira and Chillwell is probably the value option.

I’m not sure Palace are a good match up for Leicester. I’d hold off on them for a week. Palace are very dangerous away from home, are a decent bet for a clean sheet and have a habit of turning Leicester over.

If you’re looking for someone you can bench in 28/9 then I’d seriously consider Clyne and Fraser who have great fixtures from 30 on and are home in 27.

Is Rashford worth loosing because of CL rotation?

    Fab
    Robbo, tripp, kola, clyne, awb
    Salah, mane, pogba, fanderson, billing
    Kun*, rashford, jimenez

It could cost transfers if you do the Kun Auba swap assuming you want Kun in 28.

Arnie looks a better gamble than Rondon if you want out of Rashford.

I need a bit of help. I've made a couple of transfers this week and was planning to do my free hit. If I play my free hit does the game include the 2 transfers I have already done? I had to do the transfer or I would have been hit with a price drop.

Free hit? with Blank gameweeks in 31 and 33 and doubles in 32 and 34..... how bad can your team be to want to play it in week 27?

It is good but very Man city centric. Basically 10 men for this game week. Don't want to take a hit on points and can't afford to get them back in if I take them out

What are your strategies for upcoming bgw and dgw?
    A) Preparing team for the DGW32 and FH either before GW31 or GW33.
    B) preparing team for BGW31 and FH for DGW32.

    Personally I’m going for A.

B but team will be prepared for both 31 and 33. Hoping to have 10 players 31 and maybe take a hit to have 10/11 for 33

Yes. Either Salah in a single GW or Hazard/Higuain if they get another DGW

B, because one look at the likely fixtures tells you the obvious statement that generally teams not playing in 31 and or 33 will have doubles in 32.....

What are your plans if you still got all chips intact? Was thinking of FH in gw32, but then i cant play TC or BB in a dgw

You can if there is a third DGW with Chelsea. FH and BB should be more beneficial during a DGW anyway

      FH DGW32
      WC GW34
      BB DGW35
TC - Salah vs Hudd or maybe Hazard if Chelsea get another dgw

Probably FH 32, WC 34 and BB35. The TC will be if there will be another double in 35 or an easy single game.

Is it not better stocking up with players from now who will play In DGW then just the few that will be playing?
I was thinking to get players for DGW slowly from now and save 2FT before I use FH for BGW31 so that on BGW 33 I would have 2FT left to swap players around.
Will use WC for GW34 and then TC for DGW35.

I think both 31 and 33 will be too much blanks so I will try to prepare for those with transfers. It is easier to just freehit with just 32 in mind. But on the downside I will have to let go of a lot of big club players until 31 which will be... hard.

depends on who you have. DGW is a lottery, not everyone gets to play 2 games. Those using FH has an advantage as they chose the players until the very last minute of deadline.

The pros is that the next 5 GWs you can gain a step over those ditching assets who do not have a game in GW31.

I'm afraid you can't keep 2 FTs out of Free Hit.

You sure that you lose your 2FT after playing a FH?

I think it's like wildcard. You use up the stored transfer when you execute the free hit. Basically it removes the hits.

Damn it !! Although I still think that FH for BGW31 gives you more assurance of players starting because in DGW’s many players still get rested in one of the games, except for the usual Salah, Hazard and Kane !

ABC for a (-8) or keep ederson and play only 10 next GW?

    Absolutely gutted.
My team value is so low as I always always transfer on the day ir day before deadline. First time this season I felt safe to transfer in Auba a day early on Thursday. He doesn’t play and I sold Aguero to get him. I also have Rashford and I have a no scoring player to come off the bench.
Absolute disaster. And this is before people get their auto subs.

My condolences, almost took a - 4 for that same move. I believe many were thinking of the same but not admitting it's not as straightforward as they claim.

It's unlucky, and I'm sure loads are in the same boat, but the move just didn't make sense IMO... I tried warning a few off it last week. Did I expect a 17 point haul? No, but Aguero's home returns when he starts are so good. Aubameyang's and Arsenal's away aren't. He'd scored 1 in his last 6 on the road and Arsenal hadn't won since November.

      1. Bellybig

that's hindsight. Kun could have blanked, and Auba could have hauled. Anything can happen. It was the same when many captain Sane on DGW.

The reason I didn't make the move was more logical. I wasn't going to captain Auba or Aguero. I didn't fancy the chances of Auba outscoring Aguero by 2 goals (for a net gain to cover my hit). It was more like a bet. So you could imagine my delight when Auba was a no show.

Of course, anything can happen, but the chances of Aguero blanking were slim. He's delivered attacking returns in every PL home game he's started. The chances of an Aubameyang haul? Possible, but Arsenal were struggling away from home and like I said, he's scored 1 in 6 on the road. Quality of opposition needs to be taken into account, but Chelsea conceded 4 against Bournemouth recently. Everything pointed towards keeping Aguero IMO.

Pre Christmas - always go early on transfers, don't go differential and the money sorts itself out. and don't be scared of hits!

It's tough with that team value, but still, it's points that really count.

    Alisson
    Doherty Kiko
    Salah Son Pogba Gunnarson
    Rashford King Jimenez

    Guaita (Hazard, Alonso, Danilo, Digne)

    Better option?

    A) Hazard to Anderson this week,
    King to Aguero next.

    B) Danilo to TAA this week, Hazard to Sterling next.

    Man City Fixture list:
    20th Feb (schalke)
    24th Feb (LC Final)
    27th Feb (WHU)
    02nd Mar (bou)
    9th Mar (WAT)

    Blank

    Probably Blank

I haven't seen who played through the cups, but I will say Jesus start LC final. He is trusted enough to get starts, but Kun home form in the league should ensure he continues starting in fpl.

      This is a great point!

I was pretty convinced to get him but maybe you’re right, maybe we don’t get him in and hope things could swing back in non aguero owners favour ?!
Could he end up getting rested for PL and Jesus starts?

This is probably one of the major talking points around fpl at the moment surely ?
