Scout Notes

Differential options emerging at Crystal Palace

Fantasy Premier League managers should consider the differential options in attack at Crystal Palace after they largely dominated their 1-1 draw with West Ham.

The Eagles registered 25 shots against the Hammers in a match they really should have won, but their recent increased activity in front of goal, boosted by new signings bodes well.

We have assessed the best options looking to burst into the Fantasy template for future Gameweeks in this latest Scout Notes article – as well as assessing the problems at West Ham.

Crystal Palace 1-1 West Ham United

Goals: Wilfried Zaha (£6.7m) | Mark Noble (£4.8m)

Assists: James McArthur (£4.8m) | Michail Antonio (£6.8m)

Wilfried Zaha (£6.7m) continues to offer serious potential as a differential option after finding the net once again. The Crystal Palace forward has now scored in both of his last two appearances and has four attacking returns since Gameweek 21. Largely operating on the left of a front-three these days, the Ivorian international has been posting some impressive underlying statistics of late, seventh for penalty box touches in the last four Gameweeks and joint-fourth for chances created in that time – despite missing Gameweek 25 through suspension.

At Selhurst Park on Saturday, no player managed more than Zaha’s six shots in the box, the mid-price forward proving a constant menace. With Leicester (away), Burnley (away) and Brighton (home) three of Crystal Palace’s next four matches, it is certainly worth considering their talismanic attacker.

However, the aforementioned suspension does threaten to come back and haunt him as he was handed an additional one-match ban by the FA following his sending off against Southampton. As it was a suspended suspension, Zaha was able to play against West Ham while he and his club wait for the results of his appeal. The FA Cup match against Doncaster looks the most likely fixture that he would miss although the Gameweek 27 trip to Leicester still looks a little under threat.

“I thought we were a bit unlucky to lose this one, it wasn’t a cut and dried case. We think that gave us a reason for appeal and we’re hoping that, on appeal, they will decide that of course, he did wrong, he shouldn’t have applauded the referee as he did but he accepts that and has apologised for that. We believe that is sufficient punishment. The reason we have appealed is a very simple reason. We thought that we had a very good case that he would not be subject to a further ban and we were a bit disappointed when it was decided that he is subject to a further ban, one match. But we thought we were entitled to appeal that because we thought we had a very good case. I trust in the appeal committee and the FA to listen to our appeal and make the decision they want to make.” – Roy Hodgson

Zaha’s return to the side facilitated Roy Hodgson reverting back to the 4-3-3 he has proved so fond of recently, after playing 4-4-2 against Fulham. That meant there was room for just one centre-forward on Saturday afternoon, who on this occasion was Christian Benteke (£6.3m) for the first hour. This was his second start in a row since returning from injury but he was not quite as influential as he was against Fulham in Gameweek 25. Michy Batshuayi (£6.5m) replaced him and managed a whopping five shots in his 30 minutes on the pitch, one every six minutes, only Zaha managed more in the whole game. Four of those were in the penalty box although none of them were on target. While Batshuayi could have done better for accuracy, the purpose he brought to the Crystal Palace side was a big part of their domination of the game in the second half. It doesn’t seem long until the Belgian gets his first start for his new side.

“(Asked what Batshuayi needs to do to get a start): Just keep doing what he’s doing, I thought his performance was good. He was looking to get shots away, I think in his brief period on the field he probably had as many as five or six shots. He was certainly working hard to get behind the defenders which is what we want from him. We want him getting into goalscoring positions, we want him being confident enough to take on those shots and opportunities from crosses that come his way and I thought the introduction of Michy and later Max (Meyer) were good additions because they were obviously replacing – in the case of James McArthur – someone who worked very hard for 70-75 minutes. It was nice to get the fresh legs and put on somebody who not only had the fresh legs but also showed a lot of skill when he was on.” – Roy Hodgson

There was another start for Jeffrey Schlupp (£4.4m) on Saturday afternoon, which came after his goal-scoring performance against Fulham. Hodgson had admitted that the former Leicester City man had been unfortunate not to get more game-time this season, and responded by including him on the left of the midfield trio in Gameweek 26.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.6m) owners were disappointed not to get a clean sheet. Many started their Crystal Palace defensive assets considering West Ham’s recent problems in front of goal, but saw their clean sheets wiped out by a first-half Mark Noble (£4.8m) penalty. There was a change made to the Palace back-line as James Tomkins (£4.3m) missed the game through a calf injury, replaced by Martin Kelly (£3.9m).

Despite finding the net at Selhurst Park, West Ham’s attack continues to largely underwhelm. Over the four matches prior to Gameweek 26, the Hammers averaged 9.25 shots on goal, 4.5 in the box and 1.5 on target. Against Crystal Palace, Manuel Pellegrini’s men managed just six goal attempts, of which four were in the box. There was some improvement as they were accurate with four efforts, but the Hammers still look like a side that has lost its way going forward.

Marko Arnautovic (£6.8m) may be back from injury and committed to the club but it is clear the recent saga regarding his future has affected the club in some way. The Austrian was actually named among the substitutes at Selhurst Park, featuring only as a second-half substitute for Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez (£6.1m). Michail Antonio (£6.8m) has impressed in the last two matches for West Ham, coming away with a goal and assist from them, but his underlying numbers will need to improve before he can command serious Fantasy interest.

“(The Arnautovic saga) affected us because of results. Only really when you think about January, when you think of players being unsettled, but I am proud of the lads with the two performances we have just put in. I will never blame a player. I won’t because they have got families and you have got to understand where they are coming from. But you have to have a big enough squad to cope with it and with 11 injuries it is pretty tough.” – Mark Noble

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Guaita; van Aanholt, Sakho, Kelly, Wan-Bissaka; Schlupp, Milivojevic, McArthur (Meyer 79′); Zaha, Benteke (Batshuayi 60′), Townsend.

West Ham United XI (4-1-4-1): Fabiański; Cresswell, Ogbonna, Diop, Fredericks (Zabaleta 84′); Rice; Anderson, Snodgrass, Noble, Antonio (Obiang 73′); Chicharito (Arnautović 68′).

    Keep Sterling and play Camarasa?
    Got 1FT.
Can't do much improvement on my team atm, thinking of using FT to "downgrade" Kepa. Think he'll drop soon, but I guess I should hold my transfer a little closer to next GW

Definitely just bench Sterling for one week, he's one of the best players to own after the blank imo. Camarasa at home against Watford isn't a bad fixture either.

Funny I was just watching Cardiff highlights as I still think Camarasa one of the best 5th mids 8th attackers bench fodder. He was basically playing lone striker when they scored winner

What do we think of the Liverpool defensive double up for the rest of the season? Are the good days over? Have TAA and VVD but I'm eyeing VVD as a way to free up some cash to get Sterling

This is true, but I also have Luiz and Digne and this could be the opportunity to get rid. Plus it will probably cost you 0.2m to sell Aguero and buy him back again.

Treat Auba in as a hit and Aguero back as a FT or a hit.
It cost money but if you captain and he scores well, you finish ahead.

Yep I’m doing it. Main reason is my main super league rival has Auba and he’ll definitely captain him - don’t want my 33 point lead evaporating overnight. Aguero back for GW28.

Don't really see a good replacement for Richo which makes a full downgrade the choice or forgetting Kamara and upgrading Richo to Sterling in 28.

I admit this is a real issue, I have probably less of an idea now on a Richo replacement than I did this time last week. Upgrading Richo to Sterling in 28 looks pretty tasty.

Just noodling some stats. Laca +60 mins scores vs Auba when both play

    Home

    Laca 49 Auba 61

    Away

    Laca 41 Auba 48

Not miles apart but Auba better. If I removed Auba less than 60 he loses of his best scores as last 30 cameo and changes to H 49 A 33 but I didn't do that

      Mane 9, Salah 2, Alisson 2, VVD 2, Robbo 2, TAA 0 (0 minutes)
      DeGea 3, Rashford 2, Pogba 0 (0 minutes)

Totally different teams right now but might not be many pts on offer even with 4 goals scored.

Alonso has been battered by the pundits for last match so he can be benched again & will also free up some money for you if you get a Newcastle/Leister Defender.
They will Play in the blanks too

Both haven't been performing up to their earlier standards.

Anderson was a prolific shooter, but his shots have dwindled. His role is now an assister, and not an effective one yet. Also Lanzini and Arnie back next few GWs.

Maddison is being shuffled around the Leicester squad, no longer playing as a no.10. Sometimes plays on the wing, sometimes benched. Stats misleading - high keypasses, but only 1 has been for a big chance recently, xA is abysmal considering his keypasses.

Dunno whats the fascination with Vardy. Had him for Gw19-24.

He's not been performing at the big games as expected of his record. Missed a penalty. Performs even worse in easy fixtures. For his price he's not doing enough imho. He'll still nick a few goals but value isnt there.

Is it very risky to ditch Salah for two gameweeks?

    Lloris 4.0
    Doherty VVD Robertson Digne AWB
    Salah Sterling Son Pogba Jota
    Jimenez Llorente Rashford

    GW27: Salah+Llorente to Camarasa+Auba (c)

Then sort out after GW28 if I want Salah back. I feel Auba (BOU) can match Salah (WAT) in GW28.

Almiron or Almiroff? Really tempted by him as my Richarlison replacement, but I know it's a risk. I don't want Jota (plus I have 3 Wolves anyway) and I've decided it might be better to Free Hit in GW32 even though I think the ceiling is probably higher by taking a risk and using the chip for GW31 while keeping your current squad intact - which all means I need some more starters for BGW31 and Newcastle have absolutely superb fixtures all the way through to second Wildcard.

I just wish I could have scouted Almiron for a full 90 minutes. At 6m though, maybe it's a gamble worth taking. He will be trying to become that immediate talisman, should be on some set pieces, and hard to imagine him not scoring a goal early in his Newcastle career to get the home fans roaring! Okay yes I'm really trying to convince myself, perhaps because it suits my current team / budget now that I'm probably ignoring Auba and keeping Aguero, and I can't afford Rich to Anderson.

    Anyone else thinking about it?

Yeah Rich has to go, I don't even care if he scores a goal or two soon, I'm done with him. Almiron would be a speculative move though. Gut instinct has served me well this season, and it's telling me to get him, but it could so easily backfire.

Suppose not much to lose if no other moves to worry about. Probably be like El Ghazi at Villa. 2 goals against WBA everyone what a player. 1 assist next 10

I doubt I'd even be tempted if it wasn't for those fixtures. If Newcastle want to move up the table, this is the stretch of games. There must be some wins on the horizon, and surely Almiron will be involved. I think I'll go for it, but wondered if anyone has any deeper knowledge or thoughts about him first.

Players new to the PL very rarely hit the ground running and make terrible FPL picks (I'm sure there are notable exceptions that people will throw at me). But that is speaking about experienced pros from European leagues, never mind MLS. If he comes over and starts knocking them in for Newcastle then fair play, but I don't see it.

Like you said pal it's a gut instinct. Every chance of becoming a fan's favourite if he plays with that energy. I expect Newcastle to take advantage of the kind run-in they have.
Last year Perez went on a great run of form this time last year. I have a feeling Almiron could score well. Rondon is a superb team player and unfortunately, Newcastle haven't always played to his strengths.
Think they've had to sit back in some tough games of late as Rafa does that well. I'd like to see them have a go over the next few weeks and if they do, you Almiron could be a great shout at the price mate

I'd definitely consider Jota/Gross/Anderson before him

Monitor arsenal line up thursday before gw27. Iwobi could be an interesting option?

They also play the 2nd leg the following Thursday so don't read too much into this Thursday's game. Iwobi doesn't cut it for me. Mkhi could play a part for Arsenal though but it's wait and see with him

    Who to bench?

AWB or Camarasa? Considering the fact that I already have pereira.

Camarasa ended up like a striker when came on and AWB in a game both teams probably score

Camarasa should start right? If so I would play him over AWB.

How many goals will Manchester City score against Newport?

I know the dream is to draw a big team out of the hat. But if I played for Newport I wouldn't be relishing my 'big day out' ha

      Hopefully not more than 4,5.
It's demoralizing to those fans tbh.

from GW 28-30 which pair would you rather have
    (have salah already)

    a) auba and mane
    b) aguero and sterling (-4)

currently have A but arsenal's form and city's hunger for title is pushing me to go for B.

asking early as i'll have to plan this wweek's transfer to get some funds.thanks

      Same dilemma.
      I have Auba & Mane.
Would most probably keep Mane for those gw 31 & 33 to pair up with Salah & Robbo as I'm nit playing FH in those gw's.
So Auba to Kun for me atm.

      1. Eze Really?

I'm also in doubt on who to get out of aguero and sterling...hence trying all options to see which one balances the team more

          Cheers mate 🙂
FA cup draw would give us more ideas what to do.
Priorities might change after this week

To be fair. Kun and mane.

  30. Eze Really?

    I have 3 payers benched.
    Kun Richa Digne.
I have 11 players who have a game.

    1) Kun to Auba if fit for 2 weeks. Kun will miss hammers at home and Auba gets 2 plum fixtures. (-4)
    2) Do nothing. Already did Lamela to Anderson.
    3) Digne and Richa have cardiff away GW28 so I could take a chance and leave them but I could get Pereira -4 as prep for HW31 and a good fixture in GW27

Yes with no creative MFs they are struggling to create chances as they were used to

yes and I dont know but I find emery's team selection poor too in crunch games..guendouzi,torreira,xhaka all are defensive and not creative...and whatever his issue with ozil is, he is the chief creator in that team and needs to get games to get on his groove..just saying he is lazy wont work with no creativity in the team

Do you think Everton will do well against Cardiff? I really don't

      1. Eze Really?

Not really but it is a game that can get rewards.
Everton actually played well against City and Watford the game could have gone either way.
Digne can get zero or double figures. Rich is a total troll though.
