Encouraging signs for Jiménez despite blank against Newcastle

It was a largely anti-climactic end to Gameweek 26 as the host of popular Wolves options failed to deliver.

However, there was still enough from the newly-promoted side to suggest they can continue to secure positive results on this appealing run of fixtures they find themselves on.

We’ve assessed their key players’ performances against Newcastle in this latest Scout Notes article.

Wolves 1-1 Newcastle United

Goals: Willy Boly (£4.6m) | Isaac Hayden (£4.3m)

Assists: Adama Traoré (£5.1m) | Fabian Schär (£4.6m)

Raúl Jiménez (£6.8m) may have blanked for the first time since Gameweek 22, but he was as busy as ever in front of goal against Newcastle on Monday night. No player at Molineux matched his six shots in the penalty box, and neither did any other option in the whole of Gameweek 26. Jiménez sits top of that statistic for the entire division this weekend, level there with Wilfried Zaha (£6.7m). Unfortunately for his 32% ownership, just one of those was on target but he continues to offer the potential for assists as only Joao Moutinho (£5.3m) created more chances than him at Molineux. All of that does bode well for future Jiménez attacking returns, as Wolves continue on an appealing run of fixtures. Up next is a trip to Bournemouth before Huddersfield (away) and Cardiff (home) in Gameweeks 28 and 29 respectively.

Once again, Jiménez outperformed his colleague Diogo Jota (£6.0m) from a statistical point of view and justifying his loftier price tag in comparison. The Portuguese FPL midfielder was substituted in the 68th minute after receiving a yellow card for a coming together with Fabian Schär (£4.6m). That meant just one point in Gameweek 26 for Jota, although the appealing nature of Wolves’ run warrants keeping faith in him.

The same should be said of Moutinho who garnered transfer interest after recording five assists in the three matches prior to Gameweek 26. A match-up with Newcastle looked to be perfect for his attacking potential as no team had allowed more chances from set pieces, in which Moutinho is involved, than the Magpies between Gameweeks 22 and 25. However, the Portuguese’s delivery on Monday night was not quite up to scratch. His new owners will hope that was just a one-off.

Wolves probably should have won the game based on the balance of chances. They fashioned 22 chances to Newcastle’s nine, 16 of which were in the box and six were on target. Accordingly, they were ahead on expected goals (xG) too by a score of 2.41 to 0.43. However, they were unable to take their chances when they were on top of the game, a Rui Patrício (£4.5m) error allowing Isaac Hayden’s (£4.3m) second-half shot into the net. From that point onwards, Nuno had to go to ‘plan B’, introducing the usual suspects from the bench, Hélder Costa (£4.7m), Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.2m) and Adama Traoré (£5.1m). It was the latter whose speculative cross to the back-post in stoppage-time was nodded home by a high-rising Willy Boly (£4.6m)

“The performance deserved goals. We produced, we combined, we create situations but the final touch was not there but it something we must improve and be more clinical. The game requires that quality of the players.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

It was a disappointing night for the 25% of Fantasy managers invested in Matt Doherty (£5.4m). Patrício’s error ensured the first blank for the Irish wing-back since Gameweek 23, who was unable to play a part in Wolves’ efforts to rescue a point. It was Doherty who made way for Traoré in the 80th minute.

This was the sort of match in which Wolves defensive assets were expected to keep a clean sheet. Newcastle arrived at Molineux bottom of the league for goal attempts inside the box, efforts on target and total big chances in the four away matches prior to Gameweek 26. Obviously, Patrício’s error is partially to blame, as the Magpies failed to create a single big chance on Monday night, but Wolves continue to show better defensive strength away from home this season than in front of their away fans. At Molineux in 2018/19, they have conceded an average of 1.4 goals per league game, compared to 1.2 per away match.

The standout Fantasy asset for Newcastle was goalscorer Isaac Hayden (£4.3m) who has been making a strong case for inclusion as a fifth midfielder in recent weeks. All three of his attacking returns this season have now come in the last four Gameweeks after the 21-year-old has stepped up his performances of late. Having started the last eight in a row, Hayden is offering the potential for both goals and assists.

Of midfielders priced £4.5m or under, only Dwight McNeil (£4.4m) has created more chances than him since Gameweek 23. Jeffrey Schlupp (£4.4m), Adama Diakhaby (£4.5m) and the Burnley man are the only options from the chosen bracket to have shot more often in that time frame. Crucially, from those options, only McNeil can offer a similar healthy balance between the two statistics. With Huddersfield (home), Burnley (home), West Ham (away) and Everton (home) the next four opponents for Newcastle, there is definitely the possibility for further returns for Hayden.

Also of note is the recent performances of Schär, who picked up the assist for Hayden’s goal. Like his colleague, he now has three attacking returns in four matches, although his output feels slightly less sustainable. Schär’s pass to Hayden on Monday night was his only chance created in the last four Gameweeks, while he has shot on four occasions in that period.

Rafa Benitez continues to set his Newcastle side up to frustrate the opposition, which could easily account for the difficulties Wolves’ attacking players had on Monday night. The former Liverpool man has typically deployed 5-4-1 in recent weeks, but he went with a 4-4-2 led by Salomón Rondón (£5.7m) and Ayoze Pérez (£6.1m) at Molineux. Manchester City, Spurs and now Nuno’s newly-promoted side know how hard it can be to play against such an organised outfit. The Magpies should certainly not be overestimated when looking at upcoming opponents of our attacking assets in the final Gameweeks of the season, especially as Premier League survival is increasingly on the line for them.

New signing Miguel Almirón (£6.0m) made his debut for Newcastle when he came on for Christian Atsu (£5.1m) in the 72nd minute. He did inject some pace into the game but it might still be a short while before the former Atlanta United man gets his first Premier League start. Benitez explained after the match that he still needs to understand Newcastle’s style of play.

“We needed some fresh legs and energy and he could make the runs. He was fine. He needs to understand what we need to do.” – Rafa Benitez

Wolves XI (3-5-2): Patrício; Boly, Cody, Bennett; Jonny, Neves, Moutinho, Dendoncker (Cavaleiro 69′), Doherty (Traoré 81′); Jota (Costa 69′), Jiménez.

Newcastle United XI (4-4-2): Dubravka; Lejeune, Lascelles, Schär, Yedlin; Atsu (Almirón 72′), Longstaff, Hayden (Diamé 86′), Ritchie; Pérez (Manquillo 90+1′), Rondón.

Gameweek 26 Rough with the Smooth

How did your GW26 go? Did your transfers pay off? Did a hit turn out badly? How did your bench perform?

Feel free to post your tales of joy and woe from Gameweek 26 here:

Transfers: Danilo, Sane, Rich to Son, Pogba, Bednarek? (-4)

So you would have had Rich and Bennett play, with only 10 players. So 4 points and the hit. (8) You had Pog, Son, and Bednarek. So 23 minus 8 = 15 point gain.

76 points from all the usual suspects.

Survived (barely) without Aguero. Got pretty burned by that Kolasinac own goal. Sterling the standout from a decent midfield with him, Pogba, Son and Salah (C).

Smooth: Pogba keeps delivering; Etheridge managed a decent haul and Son basically rescued my GW with that late run.

Rough: Salah could have bagged much more than a goal against BOU, De Bruyne has been an absolutely disastrous failed experiment and Danilo has been an even worse one; Monday Night Football went just about as poorly as it could after I did Ings >>> Rondon (and I own Doherty). Despite 63 points, I still dropped around 30K to 508K.

Having a tough season and trying to turn it around has created a nosedive. GW25 sold Hazard (admittedly to fund aguero) and tripple captained Sane. Rage transferred out Sane and sold aguero to Auba for a hit. Yes a hit. Please let it end now.
      Played Fab over Foster (again).
Lost over 90 points in 2 weeks, worst period ever in the game.

Rough - Made kun to Auba transfer on Thursday just before news of Auba emerged, as going away with the wife for the weekend. Compounded the mistake by switching captaincy off Pogba to Salah as I thought less rotation risk. 23 points those two decisions cost me! Rashford and Pereyra no shows too meant Punchon, Digne and Bennett came in for a measly 6 points off the bench. Holebas gets suspended for prime fixture against Cardiff to cap it all off.

Smoth - Liverpool triple up (Salah, Robbo and Allison), Son, Pogba and Holebas returning well, so somehow got 70 points and a small green arrow!

Feels like a disaster when I think what could have been, but actually is any week with a green arrow a bad one? This is one of those weeks when after recent conversations I'm trying to think about how I react to luck going for and against me.

Rough: last minute Kolasinac own goal and Etheridge conceding. Massive loss of points from both as they were on for maximum bonus points.

Smooth: I brought in Aguero last week and kept him this week so I got to benefit from both hat tricks.

Only rough - no shows from Sane, Rashford, Auba, Kiko Femenia and Tomkins, meant that i only had 9 players this week! 43 points total.

I've fallen 140k places to 240k. On course for my worst season in years, having finished comfortably in the top 10k twice in the last three seasons.

Rough – Rashford and Auba not playing meant I got Chambers and AWB off the bench for a massive 1 point between them. Digne, Doherty, Richarlison and Mitro all blanking.

Smooth – Salah (c), Pogba and Son among the goals, Ederson and Robertson clean sheets.

Smooth: Salah, Pogba, Son. 38 pts from these 3.

Rough: 10 pts from everyone else. Rashford rested, Aubameyang sick and Kamara meant I started with no strikers. Lindelof not featuring meant I could only field 9. Keeping the faith with Aubameyang this last two weeks has probably cost me 60 points. Can’t wait to play my WC!

Rough: Brought in Mane and Son for Sterling and Richarlison for a hit. This didn't pay off despite both of my new players scoring.

Smooth: The last few weeks have turned around my season. Auba (c) for a hit gw24. Kun (c) gw25, then hanging fire on the hokey cokey due to injury doubts and getting another Kun hat-trick in gw26. Now there's a fire sale and price drop on Aub who I'll be getting back and captaining for the next two, glorious! 82(-4) all out.

+ Returns from Sterling (18), Martial (12), Robertson (9) and another injury time Son goal (6)
      + 86 points. 36k ➡ 23k

      Rough:
      - Aubameyang, Rashford & Sane no-shows.
      - Solanke, Digne and Wan-Bissaka off the bench for a total of 4pts.

Had a strong starting team, 3 wolves, 2 united, 2 Liverpool, 2 spurs etc plus a strong bench with good fixtures I.e. richarlison against his old club, awb good home fixture and bednarek and etherdige playing each other in what looked like could be a nil nil. Played the bench boost. Also took minus 4 for son, jota, auba with jota getting booked and auba then not playing. To make it worse rashford didn't play and alderweireld was benched plus all my view sheets bar van dijks were wiped out in what looked like favourable games. Bench boost earned me two points yet took a minus point anyway so dropped from 29 to 40k

Then realised sane and taa wouldn’t play so took another -8 to bring in mane and kolasinic for sane and TAA.

Auba and rashford didn’t show, while aguero went crazy. Kola and peltier lost a combined 16 points in injury time. Three wolves players blanked.

Smooth - 85 points so a green arrow. Held transfers for the last few weeks so going into GW27 with only two non starters (Aguero & Sterling). Weathering the 'not having Son' storm. Still have all my chips available and a TV of 107.4 at the moment.

Rough - Foster on bench (10pts) instead played Patricio (2pts). Wrong Captain choice - was set on Pogbo and flipped to Salah last minute (have only made 5 correct captain choices this year (correct = highest scoring player in a GW)). Have ridden out the TAA absence, but now as he comes back thinking of shipping.

Smooth: Lloris penalty save + Bonus, bringing in Eriksen for two weeks as I was convinced Sane would be benched again, Camarasa coming on for an assist (as 3rd sub) even though Warnock said it was unlikely to play, toying with switching Aguero to Auba but made Sane the fall guy instead

Played Etheridge and Bednarek...on for bumper points until the last minute goal fest wiped out 10pts 🙁

      No Aguero 🙁

      Pretty smooth...

Had Forgotten to update my team...
Sane as Cap and Sterling as Vice going in to face Chelsea...
Was expecting to lose a lot of headway overall and in the league I'm top of.

      City end up winning 6-0
Sane doesn't come on for 2 minutes,
Get Sterlings caps points (who ends up getting more than Aguero, some rivals cap, and the best points in my team)

      Stay top in local league
      Big green tick overall

Fell victim to the Kun > Aub Hokey Cokey.

      Offloading City assets early ahead of the GW27 blank (and before Aub’s Flag) I did;
      Kun + Ederson > Aubameyang + Foster -4

      Net loss = 24 points

To make it worse I left Sane in and Had Rashford for their blanks. Total 2 pts from my forwards.

Ended up the GW on 69pts (-4). Red arrow down to 230k

Not sure how you get to 24?

Kun would have played so not Peltier sub: +15
        Ederson instead of Foster: -3
        No hit taken: +4

I make it a net loss of 16.

After getting a mention on the Scoutcast for winning the Rough in GW24 for doing even worse than AZ with 21points...I might just win the smooth this week:
After using my TC chip on Sterling in GW25, I decided to stick with him again this GW which helped me to get 106 points!
What a difference two GWs makes, 42k to 11k 🙂

Rough all the way. Aubameyang, Brooks, TAA and Success all flagged and bagged the princely total of 1 point between them. Rashford rotated out, Luiz scored -1. Wolves could've softened the blow slightly by keeping a clean sheet last night (I have Patricia, Bennett and Jota (who also got booked)), but also let me down. A grand total of 32 points and a drop in rank from 64k to 146k. That follows on from the previous week's Sane debacle, when I dropped from 44k to 64k. I could weep!

Geoff and Joe, thanks for giving us a venue to vent. A season of joy transformed by two gameweeks of woe...

      A just-below-average 56 points, but really a rough GW:
      - Did my hit turn out badly this week? It did... I brought in Aubameyang for a hit and we know how that worked out. A big goose-egg to go with a -4.
      - Top two ML rivals kept Aguero and have made up all the ground... I relinquished a season-long mini-league lead by exactly that Aubameyang hit (4 points).
      - Kolansinac went from hero to heel in a heartbeat... by my count he lost 10 points at the 93rd minute with his own-goal + yellow card fiasco (negating his clean sheet and what would been maximum bonus in the process). Yes I looked at the BPS rules and did the math. But I'm going to keep him for now since it was almost a great week for him.
      - Of my team, only returns and only things remotely smooth were Salah (c), Pogba, and Robertson (thanks for playing -or not: Hazard, Richarlison, Rashford, Jimenez, and Doherty). Westwood and AWB 1-pointers off the bench were little consolation.

I could get frustrated about it, but I still have all my chips and I'm still having my best season (50K now, down from Top 20K in GW24 before a golden-haired Aguero wreaked havoc on everything). I'm not going to rage transfer until after the FA cup games and a clearer pictures of GW 31 and 33. Ok, maybe a couple delayed rage transfers since I don't have Sergio and getting him post-blank is tempting but throws my spreadsheet planning out the window.

Rough: Frontline of Auba (C), Rashford (V) and Vardy which was briefly on minus points and ended up at 3 points between them. No captain. Alderweireld and Schindler off the bench for 1 point. Benched Foster's 10pts. 5.7m GW rank the worst I can remember and biggest red arrow of the season

Smooth: Salah and Robertson I guess

Rough: was winning my draft matchup up until the literal last minute of the Gameweek when Wolves scored and I lost the Lascelles clean sheet. Went from winning by two and potentially saving my chances at a top-3 finish to losing by two and falling to 7th!

Smooth regular league: Captain Salah scores, plus Aguero and Pogba points.

Aguero (c), Sterling and KDB out for Salah (c), Aubameyang and Fraser for -8 could have gone better.

Aubameyang being out meant I got Lascelles off the bench, so it looked like his clean sheet would at least be a small consolation, then Newcastle conceded in the 95th minute.

Would have been 44 points ahead if I hadn't touched my team.

      Laporte (6) > kola (2) -4 hit

I think 'no they don't' is a tough thing to back up. Good fixtures are pretty conclusively shown to influence better form. Not always, of course, but if you average it out it does.

Anderson and Maddison have had quite bad fixtures but go on a run now. Anderson is something like 4 of the bottom 5 in the next 5, with 3 at home and Maddison has a big run of fixtures and no blanks in 31 and 33.

They're slight risks because they haven't shown form but I think it's wrong to think those fixtures won't help them find some kind of form

City on fire chasing title all year while Kun has been fit, still noticeably struggles to score away from home (maybe that will change)

Combination of Champions league, league cup final & premier league away games don’t look good for Kun at all

If he starts home to West Ham you’d have to fancy him to haul of course, it’d be poor if he didn’t.

Wouldn’t make sense for OP to do Auba > Kun given their respective fixtures & circumstances outlined above thouh, he’d be ignoring Auba’s GW27, Auba’s GW28, Kun’s 29-32, Kun’s bad away record, city’s bonkers schedule and Pep roulette.

    Robertson / Shaw / Doherty / AWB / Digne
    Salah / Mane / Pogba / Puncheon / Richarlison
    Rashford / Jimenez / Aguero

The biggest question is what to do with Richarlison. I bought her for 6,8£. Now value is 6,7£ and maybe it will fall another 0,1£ tonight..

Incoming Cup, CL & Europa League games worrying.. And I don't want to rush. So guys, tell me that it's wiser to save than change for example Richa to Maddison immediately?

Pick up the best combo to replace Richarlison & Digne.

    A) Fanderson & Lascelles
    B) Fanderson & Kolasinac
    C) Maddison & Pereira / Kolasinac / Lascalles (who of these)

Catching up on MOTD. Is Pogba a good captain choice against Liverpool? I know it's not an easy fixture, but he's involved with everything.

Yeah, same here. I'm a bit worried Burnley will tighten up at home and Spurs will nick it 1-0. Whereas, the Liverpool/Man U game could be high scoring.

          Personally, Aubameyang.

F Anderson is my vice, just watching Fulham at the weekend they're so poor at the back. It's not the easiest week though, so many 'even' looking match-ups.

Aubumaeyang will surely get double digits for you.

Yes, Fulham aren't organised at all.

I was thinking of bringing in F.Anderson because of this.

Might be being harsh there due to several 1pt / 4pt things but found him incredibly annoying.

Twice he 'assisted' own goals instead of just sticking it in the net himself (Watford / Man United).

Once brought off at HT against HUD after missing a sitter. Captained him that week as well so really stung.

Gave him Burnley at home as the last chance.... 1 assist while Auba smashed two in. Then hauled off.

Fulham (a) the only real haul, and even then Auba managed to outscore him somehow!

Auba's the main man there, without doubt. Always looks more dangerous & on pens. Worth the extra outlay IMO.

They play the next 2 Thursday's in the Europa before the Southampton game in a couple of Sundays. It's certainly worth holding off until the Friday deadline day. He could be a great shout as that Arsenal midfield is crying out for someone to start scoring FPL points (instead of Iwobi)

Hi all, finally a green arrow but the Holebas YC (and suspension) means i only have 8 players (!) for the bgw. I was planning to take 1 hit to field an XI but will need 2 hits now which i have never taken. Could alternatively play the FH but don't think thats the right approach.

    Fabianski -- Button
Doherty Schindler -- Alonso Digne Holebas
Salah Pogba Son -- Sterling Rich
    Rashford Jimenez -- Kamara

    A: Alonso + Rich + Kamara >> 18.5m (so like Kola + Maddison + Arnie)
    B: Alonso + Rich + Kamara >> 18.5m (so like Maguire + Puncheon + Vardy)
    C: Alonso + Digne + Rich >> 19.2m (so like Maguire + Kola + Fanderson + 1.5m for future)
    D: Alonso + Sterling + Kamara >> 23.1m (so like Lascelles + Fanderson + Auba)
