Live Hall of Fame update: leader Sean Tobin up to seventh in the world

The lull in proceedings ahead of FA Cup fifth round weekend has given us the chance to analyse our recently updated Live Hall of Fame and study the team set-ups of those managers who feature in the top ten.

This ranking system is applied to everyone who takes part in either of our Fantasy Premier League mini-leagues (free or members), with managers’ performances over the seasons then tracked to give a Hall of Fame (HoF) rating.

The live version has been updated to take into account Gameweek 26’s results and can be viewed by Members via this link.

Further information on the FFS Hall of Hame is included at the bottom of this article, but alternatively, you can view this movie to listen to Mark and the excellent Rate My Team’s Chris Atkinson discuss the feature.

The career version, which shows the standings at the end of last season, is free to view here or via the HoF tab on the home page.

2017/18 Career HoF Top Ten: Where are they now?

Four of the Fantasy managers who featured in the top ten of our Career Hall of Fame standings at the end of the 2017/18 remain in the list in our Live Hall of Fame rankings: namely Mark Sutherns (now 2nd), Grant Barclay (3rd), Matthew Jones (5th) and Marlen Rattiner (9th).

Richard Clarke sits just outside this elite list in 11th place, while Jay Egersdorff, Owen Walker, Paul Gee, Lester Cheng and Ville Rönkä drop to a still-commendable 90th, 41st, 27th, 184th and 26th respectively.

Live HoF Top Ten: New Entrants

By new entrants, we refer to those managers who sit in our Live Hall of Fame top ten and who didn’t feature in our corresponding Career Hall of Fame list at the end of 2017/18.

Sean Tobin has been catapulted to number one in our Live HoF and is enjoying a phenomenal season in FPL, currently sitting in seventh place in the world.

Sean’s previous best finish was 923rd back in 2014/15, though he has four other top 5,000 overall ranks to his name in the last seven seasons.

Stephen Harrap is well placed for his first ever top 1k finish, with his current rank of 186th enough to lift him to fourth in our Live HoF standings.

Aleksander Våge Nilsen (7th in our Live HoF), Fabio Borges (8th) and Alan Day (10th) are separated by only three FPL points and 88 places, with each manager well inside the top 1,000 in the world.

Rick Beamish (6th), who has four previous top 1k finishes to his name and who currently sits in 6,444th place in FPL, makes up our Live HoF top ten.

Live HoF Top Ten: Chip Usage

Three members of our Live HoF – Grant, Stephen and Aleksander – used their Triple Captain chip in Gameweek 25.

Grant made a 25k jump in the FPL overall rankings thanks to his backing of Sergio Aguero, while Stephen leapt from 1,124th to 211th by handing the Argentinean striker the armband.

Aleksander didn’t enjoy such luck, with his chip being deployed on Leroy Sane for the German winger’s now infamous one-pointer.

The seven other managers in our top ten retain their Triple Captain chips, while all ten bosses have their second Wildcard, Bench Boost and Free Hit chips available.

There was a real spread in the deployment of the first Wildcard, with Mark and Rick using theirs as early as Gameweek 3 and Stephen waiting until Gameweek 20 to activate his.

Live HoF Top Ten: Player Selection

Only two players are owned by all of our top ten: Mohamed Salah and Paul Pogba.

Stephen is the only one of this dectet who doesn’t own Matt Doherty or Marcus Rashford.

Sean is blazing a trail for those who prefer heavy hitters in attack, owning all three of Rashford, Aguero and Roberto Firmino.

Sean’s cheapest forward, Rashford, is the most expensive striker in the frontlines of Mark, Aleksander and Fabio.

Marlen is the only one of our top ten who owns a premium goalkeeper – that being Ederson.

Seven of our elite managers still own Richarlison, three retain Eden Hazard in their squads, while Grant still has Leroy Sane on his books as of Gameweek 26.

Marlen, Grant and Sean have all made transfers already ahead of Gameweek 27, however.

Most popular FPL assets in our Live HoF top ten:

10 – Paul Pogba, Mohamed Salah
9 – Matt Doherty, Marcus Rashford
8 – Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Son Heung-min
7 – Lukasz Fabianski, Richarlison
6 – Andrew Robertson, Lucas Digne, Sergio Aguero
4 – David Button, Aboubakar Kamara
3 – Ben Hamer, Jan Bednarek, Danny Ings, Eden Hazard, Raul Jimenez, Sadio Mane

Team value seems to be important to our elite group of ten managers: all bar Stephen have a squad value over £105.0m, with Sean’s 15 players now worth £107.6m (plus £0.1m in the bank) at the time of writing.

Meet the Manager

Four of our Live HoF top ten have already filmed Meet the Manager episodes with Joe and these videos can be watched via the links below:

Hall of Fame FAQ

How is my rating calculated?
The “HoF Rating” is based on your points scores from previous FPL seasons, with the latest season weighted the heaviest and each corresponding season weighted at roughly 80% that of the previous season. So, in other words, those who performed best in 2017/18 will receive a bigger HoF Rating boost from those who did best in 2007/08. The “HoF Ranking” even allows for those with missing years, adapting the formula accordingly to allow to rank alongside the veterans of the FPL.

How do I join the Hall of Fame
Simply sign up to our leagues next season, either the Fantasy Football Scout Classic League or if you’re a member, the Members Classic League – the code is available on the dashboard of the Members Area.

How do I find myself in the Hall of Fame?
The search box at the top of the ranking tables allows you to search by surname or by FPL id.

What if I don’t want to be listed?
Either notify us via support@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk or simply leave the Fantasy Football Scout league and you’ll be removed on the next update.

When does the Hall of Fame get updated?
The Career table is available to all and is updated at the end of each season to display the latest rankings. The Live version of the Hall of Fame is updated throughout the season to reflect the scores of the current campaign.

Good option isn't he, can't help feeling he is due a blank though and Burnley have been playing well of late. If Auba bangs in a hatty could really damage rank, you not tempted to bring him in then sell for Aguero week after ?

No, i feel its a waste of FT. Yes he can do damage but for the long term i dont trust gunners and trying not to kneejerk. I´m going with:

              Fab
              Doh, Rob, WB, Peltier
              Son(C) Salah, Pogba, FAndersson

Yes, I was thinking about taking a -8 to get in
        Auba
        Fanderson and
        Dubravka

        or

Well I would stay away from Mhki, and Arnie (for now) personally.

Auba and Anderson are the popular options for sure, I'm not one for advocating hits, but it seems to be working for people this year, so maybe?

Hopeful not to have to make too many more changes for GWs 28,29 and 30.

Thanks for the input. WIll probs go with A out of those options

Does the way the FA cup games fall in GW31 affect peoples thinking regarding the FH chip?

    From what I can see, if Chelsea beat United in the cup, and all the other PL go through, we'd be down to 4 fixtures, with some unpopular teams;

    Bournemouth v Newcastle
    Burnley v Leicester
    West Ham v Huddersfield
    Fulham v Liverpool

Are people thinking it would be better not to use the FH for these fixtures (and just have 4/5 players - likely all the same players as everyone else) and save it for a DGW, or could there be some nice differentials in these teams for one game only?

Are you hoping there will be some more fixtures in this GW, and would that make the decision about the FH chip easier?

Everton v Chelsea, and Wolves v Arsenal for example, probably makes it a lot easier to get a playing 11 out in GW31 without too many hits.

You already have 3 West Ham players?, or you would plan to bring in three?
So you'd be happy with just playing 8 players, rather than using FH?

I'll worry about it once it happens.

I don't want an extreme of one or the other to happen. 4 blanks (and loads in DGW) in GW31 will lead to cookie cutter teams. All the teams going out and just Man City v United in GW31 missing, will make it too easy to navigate.

      1. HamezMace
        • 9 Years
        5 years, 1 month ago

I prefer to worry things way in advance.
I've already picked my team for next season - including all possible connotations of promoted teams from the Championship, and speculated on new signings.

I agree somewhat regarding cookie cutter teams, but it may force peoples hand with the use of chips/WC use, if GW31/32 are extremes.

If those are the only fixtures for BGWs, then I wouldnt play FH since there are no standout matches I can spot.

BOU vs NEW, BUR vs LEI, WHM vs HUD can go either way...

Not planning to use FH in 31 though.

i found this weird, Bou v newcastle and west ham v hud wont go either way, if they have all their main players fit then they are both pretty good teams at home....but i am thinking just arnie and just fraser could be enough in addition to the pool players and i will have pereira anyway

So you'd be happy to just have 6 players starting in a GW?
and use FH in one of the doubles?

i think so, so many times in the past we have doubled up on teams on these bgw's or dgws only to be disappointed....if you just nail the 1 standout player from each fixture i believe it is enough.

IF fixtures stay as they are i will probably just aim for this:

            boruc
            Taa pereira x x x
            sal mane fraser x x
            arnie x x

            ....so 7 players.

this is purely because i cant see any of the other players in that gameweek that i would trust to deliver consistently leading up to and after GW31...the only other player i am considering is to bring brooks in just for that Gw even a cheeky -4.

Doesn’t 33 bother you? You could also be caught seriously short there too if the FA cup falls the wrong way.

possibly but if i already have fraser brooks and pereira, for 31 do you see any newcastle or leicester players that are worth bringing in just for 2pts? ....its really hard to look at both teams and nail someone that is likely to score well in both games...both leicester are very erratic going forward and dont do cs's well....

its still all a wait and see anyway for the moment but good to discuss thoughts

Periera, Maddison, Vardy...maybe Harvey Barnes, are all decent options for Leicester.

...I agree it could all change massively after this FA cup weekend, but it was quiet so i thought I'd throw it out for discussion.

                  Really? ....vardy last 5 - 2,5,2,1,3
                  Madd last 5 - 1,4,2,2,2

you think just since they are playing in the 2 bgw's they are going to suddenly haul haha,
i dont see the point in filling my team just for 2's or 3's.....yes they may haul but its hard to tell on current form and i would rather keep a strong team outside of these gw's.

besides the fact that its been discussed a lot this season that puel isnt getting the best out of vardy etc, and the lack of harmony between them, i'll probably steer clear.

Fixtures have been rough on them in the recent weeks though. They have proven decent options over the course of the season in general I think.

I understand your point, no point bringing in a player who you don't fancy, just because they have a game, but I'd also feel uneasy going into a GW with only 6 players, when I could use my FH.

...If Chelsea v Everton is also in that week, it might sway it, I don't have any Chelsea players currently, and guessing lots won't either due to form/blank GW, so FH with Hazard, Higuain, and Alonso as differentials could play off.

Maddison, pereira yes ....vardy no , hes having a poor season by his standards isnt he

yes but then im thinking if chelsea lose to utd, (which lets be honest is becoming a definite possibility)...then there will be even less need for the FH, as i would bring in higuain and luiz for example straight away and be happy with 8-9 players then.

FH can then be used in 32

The big question mark for me is 33. I think 31 and 33 need to be sen together.

A 31 team would go well in 33 given that Liverpool, Bournemouth, Newcastle and Leicester all have decent fixtures in both games,

It’s possible that a really weak 31 team would also struggle in 33. If say Wolves, Chelsea, City and United say make the semis then you’d only have Arsenal and Spurs assets for 33. That may look fine in principle but getting them in may involve a few hits as their fixture runs don’t make them a clear hold up to 31 with FH in 32.

Spurs of course may bkank there too if Brighton go for the Cup relegation double. That might mean loading up on Arsenal pre 31 may be necessary to navigate 33.

Chelsea and United won't both make the semis, but I get what you mean about 31/33.

I think if I played my FH in 31, then I'd WC ahead of 32, with more knowledge about the cup games/potential blanks.

    Etherdige - Fabianski
    TAA - WBA - Pereira - Doherty - XXX
    Salah - pogba - sterling - son - Gunnarsson
    Kun - Jimenez - King

    any suggestion?

Don't WC to get in two players, especially with the CL games, those players may have reduced minutes - that's a different subject though - but just take a hit if you really want them. WC should be used to change half your team really.

I agree with you, but I need to improve my performances and points, and at GW28 I have a direct fight with the first (I second at -6 points).
I have 3 liverpool players, 0 of the city and auba is not performing well.

I don't know if your rival has WC/chips left, but if you do, then I think there is a better strategy for using them later in the season.
Your WC team has plenty of players who could have a blank GW31 due to FA cup games.

      i will have

      guaita - boruc
      Taa pereira Doherty (jonny Peltier)

      kun jimi arnie

    - No investment from Daniel Levy
    - Still effectively playing their home games away
    - Players returned late from World Cup
    - Toughest Christmas schedule (in terms of recovery days)
    - Injury crisis

Yet he's managed to keep Spurs in the title race somehwat, and they're very likely to progress into the QF of the CL.

      100%.
Still blows my mind every time I hear people (especially Spurs fans) criticise Poch because Spurs haven't won a trophy.

Every other manager would be rolling out those excuses every week - Kane/Alli injured, playing at Wembley, No new signings, but Poch just rolls with it, class act.

For me winning the FA Cup / Carabao doesn't make you success and not winning them doesn't make you a failure.

The league and Europe are bread and butter.

They do, and I get it, fans want to win things.
Northampton fans are happy to just not get relegated/become extinct though.

I guess, as a Liverpool fan, you can empathise with Poch, both Liverpool and Spurs have made massive strides over the past few seasons with their managers, neither team has won the league for decades, so the fact they're in the picture is a huge testament to the manager, they then become a victim of their own success if they don't win it.

But for fans to disregard the work they have done to make them contenders, is naive.

Agreed. I think at this moment in time Spurs and Liverpool fans understand's each others team better than anyone else. United are falling into that bracket too now - under Mourinho & LVG they won domestic cups yet the football was horrible, the clubs weren't progressing and players wanted to leave.

Liverpool are probably a few steps in front of Spurs, having reached the CL final despite selling their best attacker and now 12 games away from potentially being league champions for the first time in nearly 30 years. Still a long way to go though 🙂

Klopp and Poch are a fresh of breath air imo, hopefully the trophies follow!

I love Pochettino, his philosophy and what he's doing at Spurs under difficult circumstances. The fact they are still in contention for the PL is incredible.

However, I do feel a lot are going over the top with last night's result. They should be beating Dortmund and reaching the last 8 of the CL IMO. Their starting 11 last night cost a fortune compared to Dortmund's, whose front 3 were assembled for a similar transfer fee to Son. I suspect their wage bill is higher too.

Regardless of that, he's clearly one of the best managers around and Spurs are lucky to have him.

I do agree to an extent. Although BVB are still top so it's still a great victory for Spurs nonetheless.

Let's see how they fair if they come up against Juve over two legs, City, Barcelona etc.

Yeah for sure - it's not Poch or Spurs' fault, I just felt a lot were getting a little over excited last night when I think they should have expected to win, which is credit to Spurs and shows how far they have come.

Would love to see them get PSG in the next round with a fully fit squad.

    Fab Button

    TAA Robertson Doherty Wan-B Bednarek

    Salah Sterling Pogba Richarlison Hojbjerg

    Aguero Jimenez Rashford

Got all chips and WC intact with 2FT and 0.1 ITB. Ideally would hold onto both Sterling and Aguero but ML rival has Auba and Son already and think it's too much value to bench this GW.

Any suggestions for what I should be looking to do next GW?

      Better move? 2FT, 0.1 ITB.

      A. Sane -> Pogba/F.Anderson and then Auba/Hazard -> Aguero/Sterling before GW28?
      B. Only replace Sane with either Pogba/F.Anderson and save 2nd FT.

      Current team is:
      Kepa - Hamer
      Robbo - Kolasinac - Shaw - Doherty - AwB
      Hazard - Sane - Son - Deulofeu - Stephens
