Son’s scoring streak continues as Vertonghen excels at wing-back

Tottenham Hotspur produced an excellent second-half display to establish a commanding first-leg lead in their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night.

Spurs’ latest European exertions at Wembley shouldn’t have a direct impact on Fantasy managers, as the Lilywhites – who are out of the FA Cup – have ten days to recover before they take on Burnley in Gameweek 27.

As we mentioned in our Digest article yesterday, however, the return leg in Dortmund could prompt rotation from Mauricio Pochettino as it takes place in between the north London derby in Gameweek 29 and a trip to Southampton in Gameweek 30.

Pochettino’s side will have contested five competitive matches in 15 days (four of them Premier League fixtures) by the time they visit St. Mary’s.

The Champions League quarter-finals take place either side of Gameweek 34, meanwhile.

Our Scout Notes article below recaps the goals, assists, Fantasy talking points and salient manager quotes from last night’s match.

Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 Borussia Dortmund

  • Goals: Son Heung-min (£8.9m), Jan Vertonghen (£5.9m), Fernando Llorente (£5.7m)
  • Assists: Jan Vertonghen, Serge Aurier (£5.8m), Christian Eriksen (£9.3m)

Another game and another goal for Son Heung-min (£8.9m), who has now found the net on 14 occasions in all competitions since his purple patch started in Gameweek 13.

Son has scored in each of the four matches that he has featured in since returning from the Asian Cup, making light of his manager’s (and his own) comments that he was fatigued after international duty in January.

The South Korea international again started up front for the Lilywhites and scored the tie’s opening goal just after the interval, volleying home a superb Jan Vertonghen (£5.9m) cross.

Though his shot count was unremarkable (two – one blocked, one goal), Son’s all-round display was again impressive and his off-the-ball movement and pace on it caused Dortmund problems.

Son almost carved out a tap-in for Lucas Moura (£6.8m) in the first half but an outstretched Roman Burki leg deflected the Korean’s low cross to safety.

Pochettino said of Son’s performance:

Sonny was fantastic again, he’s doing fantastic. He’s a player who provides the team with a lot of very good things. His smile, he translates good energy and his performance in every single game is improving and improving. We’re so happy. It’s so obvious how he is.

The Spurs boss had lined his team up in a 3-4-1-2 at kick-off, with Son and Lucas paired up front and Christian Eriksen (£9.3m) dropping back from the number ten role to form a five-man midfield in the second half.

This tactical tweak proved to be something of a game-changer after a nervy opening 45 minutes that Dortmund edged, with Eriksen able to get on the ball with more regularity and increase his influence on proceedings.

Sitting in 6.6% of FPL squads, Eriksen is something of a premium midfield differential having understandably been overlooked in favour of the in-form Son by large swathes of the Fantasy community.

His underlying statistics remain competitive however and those who place their faith in attacking KPIs would have been encouraged by last night’s numbers: no player on either team registered as many goal attempts or key passes.

Eriksen’s shots, as they so often do, mostly came from distance but his sometimes disappointing set-piece deliveries improved in accuracy, with Toby Alderweireld (£6.0m) forcing a save from one of the Dane’s crosses before substitute Fernando Llorente (£5.7m) nodded in Spurs’ third goal to reward Eriksen with an assist.

Harry Winks (£5.5m) and Moussa Sissoko (£4.9m) continued their fine form in central midfield but while their performances are largely irrelevant to Fantasy managers (the deep-lying pair have a combined one goal and two assists in FPL this season), the display of Vertonghen at left wing-back was eye-catching.

Having played as more of an orthodox left-back against Newcastle in Gameweek 25, Vertonghen was given license to roam further up the flank on Wednesday and turned in a brilliant display, creating Son’s goal with a sublime cross before getting on the scoresheet himself when connecting with Serge Aurier‘s (£5.8m) delivery from the right.

Vertonghen’s standard of crossing was excellent overall and his ability on the ball impressed, with one slaloming run through the Dortmund defence culminating in a shot that arrowed wide.

While Ben Davies (£5.6m) remains sidelined, Vertonghen looks set to job-share with Danny Rose (£5.8m) at left-back, moving back across to centre-half whenever the England defender is recalled to the starting XI.

Hugo Lloris (£5.4m) was a virtual bystander in the second half as Spurs asserted control but the France international was the busier of the two goalkeepers before the break, making stops from Christian Pulisic, Thomas Delaney and Dan-Axel Zagadou as the home defence wobbled.

Pochettino shared his thoughts on this “game of two halves”:

The first half was very difficult, first of all because we never felt the confidence to play. We took some rash decisions. It’s like we weren’t comfortable. We didn’t feel what we planned to play.

But after fixing some problems, showing them some clips at half-time and talking a little about different positions, offensive and defensive and trying to help the team to perform better.

It was a massive confidence boost when Sonny score made the team play much better. We deserved the victory in the end. It was a massive victory and the players deserve all the credit. They were fantastic. To play after Sunday with one day less recovery we need to praise them.

Pochettino also praised Juan Foyth (£5.0m), who – save for a couple of mistakes in possession – largely performed well as part of a three-man backline:

I’m so happy for him, he was fantastic today.

Of course, he still needs to improve and learn. He’s so brave, braver than you expect, braver than the people expect.

The first action was unbelievable, the people were pushing him and then he made a few mistakes because he wanted to play.

But I prefer that players who make mistakes trying to play. I was a completely different type of centre back, not with his quality. I love the players taking risks and are brave like he is.

Lucas performed adequately up front alongside Son but the imminent return of Harry Kane (£12.4m) would indicate that both the Brazilian and Llorente are on borrowed time as strike options, save for perhaps the odd run-out when the fixtures pile up in March.

Tottenham Hotspur XI (3-4-1-2): Lloris; Foyth, Sanchez, Alderweireld; Aurier, Winks, Sissoko (Wanyama 90′), Vertonghen; Eriksen; Son (Lamela 89′), Lucas Moura (Llorente 84′).

For chip strategy I'm thinking about preparing for 31, then wildcarding in 32, free hit 33, bench boost 35 which in a way gives you 2 free hits.. Would need to decide when I was playing triple captain though

Mine is making a team for 31 which is then still a great team for 33, FH 32, WC 34, BB 35 and TC??

Someone can still get a haul, even in a single GW. We're only aiming for around 15 points, so a brace from a midfielder.

I actually really like this mate and I think I'm going to do this and use the TC 34, Wildcard 32 is magic , because if we triple up on City and Utd then they will double again 34 most probably, love it.

I like this plan but not sure it will work. The players that you will invest for gw31 might not return points and wc before a blank gw and double gws is always risky.

@Master Roshi. Your plan is exactly what I was going to do...not much seem to like the idea though.
The only difference I was considering to make is that I use WC for 33 not 34 because there might be lots of blanks in 33. What do you think?

Interesting idea, 33 may end up with only a few blanks so it might not be that hard to manage, plus the teams youd want for 33 may not have a double in 35 so then the WC wouldnt be as useful, have to just keep an eye on fixtures for now

When you say preparing for GW31, what do you mean?
If there are only four games, how many players do you hope to get?

Probably 9 but the beauty of the strategy is you can take some punts as you're wildcarding the week after anyway

The concern for me would be that I'd have to bring in Leicester, Burnley, Newcastle etc, players, a few weeks before GW31 for players that I actually want to own.

I would try and save 2 frees before 31 if I take a - 8 to bring in 4 more players its probably worth it as I then just get rid with the wc.

Only asking as it seems people are taking lots more than in previous seasons, and for the most part it seems to be paying off.

Alternative option would be to ignore GW31, use FTs for GW32, FH in 33, WC in 34 and TC in 35

I agree about FH in 31.

I'm not sure if the decision is easier, or harder, depending on whether or not Everton v Chelsea happens.

As I currently have no Chelsea players, and I imagine most don't due to the blank, and recent pummelling, a FH team with Alonso, Hazard and Higuian as differentials could be good.

                Robbo, Pereira
                Salah, Mane from that team.
                😮
IF it's a big blank it would reduce FH potential imo.

                  Two sides of the coin.
A big blank means anyone not playing their FH will have less players, or need to take multiple hits, or weaken their teams in the weeks ahead of GW31 in order to get 9/10/11 players out.

But yes, it also means the player pool to choose from in 31 is a weaker selection.

I have Robertson, Schindler, Salah, Anderson, and Wilson currently who would play in a worst case GW31 scenario.

It'll depend on results in the cup, If Wolves go out, and I think they're the most at risk PL team, it would make it easier to navigate 31 without FH.

That said, I don't see the need to hold WC until 34, why not play it in 32?

Free hit 32 - as there is little crossover in players you want between 31,32,33 so perfect for a free hit in the middle

      Wilcard 34 & Bench boost 35.....

I can't see any argument for free hitting in 31 or 33 unless you are struggling to get a team out, it will seriously screw up your week 32 unless your team is already optimised for 32.

Is there any particular prem teams going out of cup that might change peoples preferred strategy? I can see a few more going out next round and some of the teams left in cup their fixtures don’t look great anyway for doubling up those weeks. Strongly considering WC this week actually because of the above to hopefully shoot up ranking next few weeks (fixtures change for a lot of teams and would allow me Agüero and Auba/laca next gameweek) and could slowly integrate say Brighton/Bournemouth players as they get good fixtures. Not feeling my team next few weeks - although just about getting 11out 27

One step at a time, first things slowly build gwk31 team without damaging your team to much which seems pretty easy, then chip plans will become clearer.

I think if it ends up being a huge blank there will probably be more points lost in the preceding weeks if people load up on teams that have a fixture in GW31, compared to points lost in GW31 itself if you field a team with 5-6 players.

        This.
Have 5 players right now playing gw31.
So if every PL team & Chelsea go forward in fa cup I'll just bring in 2-3 player's in gw31 by saving 2 FT.
Auba can be given up in my case to get 2-3 player's with same budget.
IF Wolves-Arsenal match goes on then nothing to worry about

Agreed. I think looking at the sides likely to play, my preparation for GW31 will extend to just trying to save 2FTs, then building as good a side as I can for a -4 before either WC or FH (depending on FA Cup outcomes).

no injuries to one of your players during that time is riding some luck, but fair enough, unlike some of your answers i like it. You are taking out players with tough fixtures and then allow yourself to take them in when doubles. You should look at how you will do value wise, might not afford Pogba? Son to Sterling is also a wait and see, a lot can happen in the meantime that might change your mind.

I would be tempted to not really navigate. Wildcard now. Get the strongest XI he can get regardless of blanks/doubles. Then make sure he has 4 players on the bench which play in the single gameweeks. He may miss a couple of players in the blanks and may miss a couple of extra double gameweek players but his strong team should pull back on those who ruin their teams for blanks/doubles.

Wildcard *now*? I think their side is set up for 27 fine... do you mean WC for 28 with as strong a side as possible?

Exactly. Just wildcard when needed with the best possible team and ignore blanks/doubles. Take the little losses by not playing them like the others. But he may be up overall with better players.

Demel made a good point to you earlier,

Anyone who is thinking they'll take out the likes of Pogba, Rashford, Doherty, Jimenez, Son ahead of a blank 31 and then just transfer them back in on a WC, please be aware of how much value you have tied up in these players, in some cases it's going to be 0.5m of value alone.

You mentioned Ederson, Son, Jiminez, and Wan Bissaka in your transfer plans above, as well as Pogba?

If you want to cash in on them fine, but just note what their current prices are, if you want to buy them back after, it might not be so easy.

          1. Dynamic Duos
            • 10 Years
            5 years, 1 month ago

Ederson, i wouldn't get back and Son is 0.1m over what I paid and Jimenez is 0.2m over. Wan has abit tied up in him but at the point of selling he has rough fixtures or blank. I won't rush anything though.

            1. HamezMace
              • 9 Years

For clarity, this isn't a criticism of your strategy, or a comment aimed at you specifically, just a cautionary note for anyone with the same plan, just consider the buy back amount if it's a player you'll want back the week after selling them.

Well for this week it's hard to argue against Anderson, but going forward I'd rather invest in Son

I don't think it's hard to argue against Anderson at all. Son has been incredible and Anderson only has 1 mark in his last 7 games. I understand West Ham is playing Fulham but you can't ask for better form than Son.

I'm a Fulham supporter, I would target any player against them right now , even if it was a one off punt.

But , agree Son has better prospects beyond a one week punt.

Tbf thought Anderson won't be blanking gw31, it's likely tot will

I understand the reasoning for wanting Felipe Anderson in general and agree it's a logical punt, everyone on here seems to like for this week. However, I'm not sure it's justified to put him in the conversation with Son right now. Son has 8 goals and 4 assists in his last 4 starts. The two aren't even in the same book, let alone on the same page.

I was thinking of geting them both but not sure who tho get this week, targeting Anderson cause of Fulham, but im a bit scared of Son rampage, cause most probably will be most captained this week.

I just can't decide whether I go Aguero to Aubameyang(c) or Richarlison to Maddison, Son (c).
