Almiron an unproven FPL prospect but brings goals and assists to Newcastle

Last Monday evening saw the Premier League debut of Miguel Almiron (£6.0m), Newcastle United’s club-record signing and a potentially exciting differential option for Fantasy managers in the final third of the season.

The Paraguayan midfielder, who joined the Magpies from Atlanta United on a five-and-a-half-year deal in January, played the final 18 minutes of Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers and looked sprightly in his brief cameo, creating a late chance for Ayoze Perez (£6.1m) and demonstrating his lightning pace and dribbling ability in what little pitch-time he was afforded.

Almiron is an all-the-more intriguing midfield option given that Newcastle sit top of our Season Ticker for the rest of the season, meeting only two of the “big six” in the remaining 13 Gameweeks.

The Magpies are also guaranteed a fixture in the Blank Gameweeks of 27 and 31.

The History

Almiron was born in Asuncion in February 1994 and, after being rejected by Nacional at the age of 14 (concerns about his slight physicality remain to this day), the talented attacking midfielder progressed through the youth system and into the senior set-up at Paraguayan club Cerro Porteno.

After 39 Primera Division appearances, five league goals and two domestic titles, the-then 21-year-old Almiron departed for Argentinean club Lanus in August 2015.

Almiron only hit three goals in 35 league appearances for Lanus but was instrumental in their 2016 Primera Division win, before departing for Major League Soccer in December 2016.

It was with Atlanta United that Almiron’s goal involvement statistics started to warrant attention.

In his debut season in MLS, Almiron scored on nine occasions and set up a further eight goals in 30 league appearances.

The Paraguay international bettered those totals in his sophomore campaign, scoring 12 goals and registering 13 assists in 32 MLS appearances.

Almiron also scored in the MLS Cup Playoff quarter-finals, going on to help Atlanta to victory in that competition in his final match with the club.

Newcastle’s January window signing was named in the MLS XI in both the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

According to Who Scored, Almiron ranked second for goal attempts in the 2018 MLS season and joint-eighth for key passes.

The Paraguay international also sat joint-third for accurate corner-kick deliveries and fourth for dribbles attempted.

Almiron’s final goal for Atlanta was a free-kick against New York City FC in December 2018, while he also scored five penalties for the MLS club during his time there.

The Quotes

Rafael Benitez:

We were following Miguel Almiron for a while, and we saw a player with some pace in attack, who can play behind the striker. We have someone who can score goals and give assists.

His impact in MLS has been really good – he’s been one of the best players this year – and hopefully he can give us more competition and more quality in the final third.

Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino, current Mexico coach and former manager of Almiron at Atlanta:

Miguel has a commitment to the team, I’m talking about his commitment to winning the ball back, pressing, he’s a player that’s always working.

He’s an atypical number ten. Because he gives you everything that a number ten gives you and he probably dispossesses players like a defensive midfielder.

So as a player who always works hard, he’s never absent in a game, even a game where your team isn’t dominating the offensive facet of the game.

Warren Barton, ex-Newcastle defender and current pundit based in America:

I think he can do well at Newcastle. You can rotate him a little bit and he can play on the right or the left, but I think he wants to be in the middle. He’s not like a Keith Gillespie-type of winger, someone who will knock the ball forward and run.

I think he’ll be ideal for us if we have two holding midfielders who can get the ball to him as quickly as possible and then he can be that link between the midfield and the forward.

He’s someone who can drop in a little bit when we haven’t got the ball but when we do have it, we can give it to him and he can try to make things happen. That’s where I see him fitting in.

The Prospects

For all the arresting attacking statistics and appetite-whetting YouTube compilations, so much is still uncertain about Almiron as a player and his ability to cut the mustard in the Premier League.

Understandable (and perhaps snobbish) caution surrounds any import from a league such as MLS: for every success story such as Clint Dempsey, there is a Jozy Altidore (who admittedly arrived in the Premier League via a circuitous tour of Europe).

Almiron’s ability to compete in physical leagues in South America is a positive sign, however, as was his determination to get stuck in at Molineux on Monday – even if he did rather milk a couple of robust Wolves tackles.

Almiron’s first challenge is to break into the Newcastle starting XI, which is by no means a certainty in Gameweek 27 given that Benitez has named an unchanged team for the last five league matches in a row.

The man Almiron replaced on his debut, Christian Atsu (£5.1m), looks to be the player most at risk from the Paraguayan midfielder’s arrival on Tyneside.

Almiron mostly played as a central number ten for Atlanta during his two years in North America but, as a left-footer, would seem just as ideally suited to Atsu’s current role in Benitez’s now-favoured 3-4-2-1.

Atsu has shown plenty of industry and fleeting glimpses of skill over the last two months, starting all but one of Newcastle’s last 11 Premier League matches.

A lack of end product blights the Ghanaian winger’s game, however, and he is without a goal or assist in 2018/19.

Perez, the man that Almiron would seem likely to play alongside just behind Salomon Rondon (£5.7m), has only four goal involvements all season, meanwhile.

Newcastle’s lack of goals this campaign might give Almiron’s prospects of a first Premier League start a boost, particularly with more “winnable” games ahead and the need to take three points from teams such as Huddersfield Town (United’s opponents next weekend) to stave off the very real threat of relegation.

The Magpies are the second-lowest scorers in the Premier League this season, having hit the back of the net on only 22 occasions in 26 matches.

United have scored just 13 goals in 16 fixtures against sides outside of the top six in 2018/19.

Newcastle sit bottom for shots in the box this season, while only two clubs have registered fewer attempts on target and big chances.

It is asking a lot for Almiron to single-handedly improve those figures or indeed score a hatful of FPL points in a side that has such a defence-first mindset as Benitez’s Newcastle outfit.

Nevertheless, he has arrived on English soil at just the right time to enter the mid-price midfield debate, with Newcastle’s fixtures appealing for the rest of 2018/19.

Almiron would particularly seem suited in matches when Newcastle are content to soak up pressure (i.e. away games), with his pace and dribbling ideal for swift counter-attacks.

The Paraguayan’s arrival could also boost the appeal of Salomon Rondon(£5.7m), who so often subsides on scraps but who could benefit from the creativity of Almiron behind/to the left of him.

The first impressions of Almiron in a Newcastle shirt – and the footage of him playing for Atlanta – suggested a ‘Hatem Ben Arfa with a work ethic’-type character.

Time will tell if he can make a similar step up to the Premier League as the mercurial Frenchman did but the comparative dearth of attractive £6.0m-and-under midfield options in FPL makes him a very exciting prospect.

    What happened to KDB?

City has scored 18 goals in last 6 pl matches (average 3 goals a match) Yet he has got only a mere 1 assist.

Was hoping he could be a cheaper route to city mid. But it looks like its Sterling or none from city mids. Thoughts?..

still getting up to speed and his mins are being managed

He has been a bit unlucky also with certain situations but he normally builds up a head of steam before he really starts delivering consistent points

Been assisting the assister. Looked realy good against arsenal just didn't happen for him. I think points will come but Sterling ang Augero seem to be the better way in. I've had him for the last 3 but getting rid.

Still own him as a 5th mid. I think we've been a bit unlucky not to get any returns from him, tbh. He's looked lively.

I'm considering downgrading to a Camarasa to afford Aguero after the blank, but not quite sold yet. I prefer KdB to Sané at the moment.

If the expensive 5th mid is someone you'd consider in your 4 expensive mids, then it should be a viable tactic. Aguero has just gone and shown up the weakness in the past 2 GW's, that's all 🙂

I really can't pick someone in the 5-9m bracket that I really like, so am probably going to switch back to 343.

    Hi guys,

I have used my wildcard and bench boost already so would you save the freehit for DGW 32 or still look to use it on the BGW 31/33? I also have TC still but may just use that on a SGW or maybe that could be more powerful on a DGW?
    Appreciate any advice

First wait until the fixtures are announced before doing anything, in your situation you need as much information to make your decision from as possible.

I think I would probably use my FH for gw31 and start planning a strong team for the DGW32, hopefully the second BGW will be smaller and your gw33 team will be viable. that puts you in a stronger position for the second dgw. you can use you TC in either dgw.

if you use your FH in gw32 it means going into the second DGW you'll still be carrying all the BGW players you stocked up on like Leicester, bourneouth and few city/utd/etc who everyone else will own in the second DGW

Almiron at 6mil looking like a decent option for rest of the season, or at least promotes Rondón as a better option than usual. Can’t believe atsu doesn’t have a goal or assist all season from that position!

Is he though @6m? I think 5.5m would’ve been fairer. Above that and you’re into premium def category where I’d prefer a Vertonghen (as an example) and 4.4m mid rather than starting Almiron every week.

Aye, you make a good point. I think Perez started off as a £6.5m forward (definitely overpriced) and Almiron will effectively play in the same attacking midfield position as him.

Given his "AM" role, FPL have maybe looked at the likes of Maddison, Gross, Jota etc and price-matched him in the same bracket.

I think it's "about right" - though time will tell if he's another Thauvin/Cabella/Luque...

Defenders are a bit OP with the bonus points, imo. If they pick up a CS and assist then it's almost 12 points in the bag. Without the assist, you can be looking at 7 or 8 points. For me, that makes 6-7m midfielders a no-go area.

Which Newcastle defender should I go for and why? Price not really an issue as I have used my WC already

      A) nailed and a bonus magnet

Many will go for Schar, however his attacking points are unsustainable, and he's also nearing a ban I think for YCs accrued...he's a bit Holebas in that regard.

How is it obsessive? I'd like to think I urged quite a bit of caution (see the first two paragraphs under The Prospects, for example).

We'd normally write a Scout Report on most major signings and given his recent record (in what I stress is an inferior quality of league), attacking midfield position and NUFC's fixtures, he certainly warranted that.

I'm certainly not ordering folk to go out and sign him - the title even says "unproven".

Exactly, you don't know. That's why he's unproven, as the article states. It lays out a case for and against, in my view, which is exactly what I pay for. A critical analysis is a world away from hype. It would be hype if he made a claim that he'll be the best attacking midfielder for the last third of the season, but he didn't. What exactly are you opposed to?
By the way, Arshavin scored 4 goals in one match against Liverpool once so even your perceived failures can be significant from a FF point of view. Rarely do owners hang on to a player like that all season.

We all kind of know that more Premier League teams in the latter stages of the cups means more blanks, more doubles, more of an advantage to those of us who plan ahead a bit. Anyone else feel really dirty rooting for City to beat Newport?!

Man Utd will play Liverpool, Palace, Southampton and PSG within 11 days. Martial and Lingard out will hamper their attack.

I think there’s a high chance Rashford is benched for either Palace or Southampton. It might not be a bad idea to get rid soon.

Depending on the results in the FA cup though, anyone planning FH gw31, TC gw32, WC gw34, BB gw35?

Gives a dgw to play the TC chip, also dont have to load up your team with players playing in 32, who in any other week wont repay you many points/

Although it all depends on who has the highest probability of blanking in gw33. If the blanks in 33 are manageable, 2-3 transfers to get in players for gw33 looks good.

I don't have TC but I am playing

      FH 32
      WC 34
      BB 35

I am managing GW 31 via FT.
Currently only have 5 players (3 LIV, Fab, Westwood)
but looking to get out 10 (probably use 2 FT for 31 itself) - Lascelles, Fanny A, maybe Pereira
I think 31 will be a low scoring week anyway so don't want to FH that week

Can someone tell me the logic of FH in gw31? How will you then cope with bgw33? This is of course assuming that you will load up on players for dgw 32 and 35.

    1. The 5% Team
      • 5 Years
      5 years, 2 months ago

I guess you presume GW33 will be a smaller BGW...and then even maybe take a hit to field a playing XI. But yes, there is a small sacrifice / gamble in this strategy

    2. Twisted Saltergater
      • 14 Years
      5 years, 2 months ago

There won't be many blanks in GW33.

The thinking is you keep your Man City, Spurs, Chelsea assets and FH in GW31, then have you big DGW in GW32 so BB, then take a -4 to field 10 or 11 for BGW33 with one eye on DGW35.

You wouldn't take this approach if you still have your 2nd WC.

      1. Twisted Saltergater
        • 14 Years
        5 years, 2 months ago

There's a lot of merit in this approach given Chelsea and Man City's fixtures are so good running up to the BGW31.

Teams following the FH in DGW32 strategy will be preparing their squad for BGW31 and 33, so are unlikely to buy Hazard/Higuain for Fulham and Wolves, and Aguero/Sterling for West Ham, Bournemouth, Watford.

On the other hand, they'll be hoping Arsenal do well vs Southampton and Bournemouth. But look further afield, Arsenal have tricky fixtures vs Tottenham and Man Utd in GW29 & 30. It will be a fine balance between optimising points leading up to BGW31 and doing well in the double GWs.

the second BGW would be expected to be much smaller, and may only need a couple of transfers to cover. that's all based on assumption until we get some FA cup results

    6. Goonsquad245
      • 8 Years
      5 years, 2 months ago

Entirely dependent on your squad makeup right now. Some will have 6 for GW31 already (3 Liv, Fab, Fando, and Pereira for example) so can afford to prepare for that whilst also taking advantage of good fixtures for MCI and CHE. Some will have 2-3 and it becomes a bit trickier.

I don’t think you need to make transfers purely with GW31 in mind this year - some (Anderson, Fabianski, Pereira) will be decent options regardless with their respective fixture runs

Or Auba in straight swap for kun - easy to revert there after

Hmm thanks could do, though I'd either need a 0.2 swing to get Kun back or take a hit the following week

Well I’d wanna keep Kun and Kamara there is nowhere you can go.

So Ings to the best you can afford !

Those are the 3 I already have, so would you just hope Ings is back from injury?

I’d look for news on Ings. But otherwise he’s the guy to remove to get someone playing this week.

You’d need someone like Niasse from him tho ?

The issue with your cheap forwards

Solanke @ 4.7 could be a punt worth taking, but I don't know how much you'll get for Kamara as he seems to have dissapeared

Cheers, yeah strange he's disappeared! Thought it would force me to transfer him out, I get 4.4 for him.

Wouldn't be doing anything for a hit right now, TBH

I'm in a similar boat with you: have Kun, want Auba. Have a FT, and am going backwards and forward over whether using it (plus subsequent FT) on getting Kun back is smart or not. Its a coin toss, I think

I would bd accessing my team to get a better front line?
Kun would stay & bin Ings & Kamara.
This time of year you need 15 playing squad members not trash

    a. Digne > Perreira or Kola?
    b. Firmino > Lacazette or Auba?

True story. While at Uni, my mate John Brewer returned home for the Summer and left a window open in his room at the halls of residence. When he got back in September, pigeons had got in and totally decimated his room - like shat everywhere (you can imagine). Bizarrely, one of Blur's lyrics to Park Life is, "John's got brewer's droop, he get's intimidated by the dirty pigeons."

        Weird eh? 😀

Haha. One if the best gigs I’ve been to was Blur at Morecambe Dome (Almiron was 1year old 🙁 ) with Matt Lucas as support act (he was crap)

I wish Almiron was cheaper. If on a FH this week is almost certainly want him v Huddersfield. Huge differential! Like that kind of punt and know very little about the bloke

    In preparation for BGW 31;
    A - Duffy* + Brooks
    B - Pereira + McNeil
(*if Brighton get knocked out of FA Cup)

    1. danishdynamite
      • 13 Years

Considering Brooks is knacked, I'd say B ..... and McNeil is a decent choice

      1. danishdynamite
        • 13 Years
        5 years, 2 months ago

OTOH he might be fit by 31, so perhaps I was hasty

        I'd still go B though

IF Brighton goes out I'd have Duffy, Brooks & Pereira in my team in gw 31.

So A for me & try to get Leister Defender too
