Doherty injury latest as more blanks confirmed in Gameweek 31

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Crystal Palace both overcame opponents from the Football League on Sunday to progress to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup – meaning that their respective Premier League fixtures in Gameweek 31 will now have to be rearranged.

Five sides from the top flight of English football have now reached the last eight of the FA Cup: Watford, Brighton and Hove Albion, Manchester City, Wolves and Crystal Palace.

Championship clubs Millwall and Swansea City have also made it through to the sixth round.

The one FA Cup fifth-round tie still to be contested, Chelsea v Manchester United, will determine whether Fantasy Premier League managers have five blanks to navigate in Gameweek 31 or six.

As of Sunday evening, the Gameweek 31 picture looks as follows:

Fixtures that will go ahead as scheduled:

Bournemouth v Newcastle United
Burnley v Leicester City
Fulham v Liverpool
West Ham United v Huddersfield Town

Fixtures that will be postponed until a later date:

Brighton and Hove Albion v Cardiff City
Manchester United v Manchester City
Spurs v Crystal Palace
Watford v Southampton
Wolves v Arsenal

Fixture that could still be a blank, depending on the result of Monday evening’s FA Cup tie:

Everton v Chelsea

Should Wolves and Palace’s Gameweek 31 fixtures be moved to Double Gameweek 32 (which is only a possibility at this stage and not a certainty) then Nuno Espirito Santo’s side would face Burnley (a) and Arsenal (h) in DGW32, with the Eagles playing Spurs (a) and Huddersfield Town (h).

READ MORE: How Manchester City and Brighton booked their passages into the FA Cup quarter-finals.

We’ll look at chip strategy and Blank Gameweek 31 in more detail once the result of Chelsea v Manchester United is known, while the Scout Notes for Doncaster Rovers v Crystal Palace will follow on Monday morning.

Our focus instead switches to the Sunday afternoon match at Ashton Gate, a game in which Matt Doherty took centre stage.

Bristol City 0-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

  • Goal: Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.2m)
  • Assist: Matt Doherty (£5.4m)

With Gameweek 27 already testing the depth of Fantasy managers’ squads, the last thing many FPL bosses needed was an injury to Matt Doherty (£5.4m).

The Irish wing-back is owned by more than one in four FPL managers and, as of Gameweek 26, sat in over 60% of Fantasy teams inside the top 10k.

The sight of Doherty limping from the pitch after 81 minutes of Wolves’ 1-0 won over Bristol City therefore sparked considerable concern in the Fantasy community, though the problem thankfully doesn’t seem to be a serious one.

Speaking after full-time, Nuno Espirito Santo said:

He had a knock and was not able to continue. It was tough, he held on for the maximum he could, but in the end, he had to come off.

Express and Star journalist Tim Spiers, meanwhile, posted the following:

Doherty impressed prior to his injury, having assisted Ivan Cavaleiro‘s (£5.4m) 28th-minute strike and having struck the woodwork himself soon after.

There was a sense of deja vu about the Ireland international’s role in the match-winning goal, with Doherty latching onto to a long diagonal ball from Conor Coady (£4.5m) before picking out Cavaleiro from the byline with a low cut-back.

Doherty nearly capped his performance with a goal two minutes later, combining beautifully with Leander Dendoncker (£4.3m) and Raul Jimenez (£6.8m) before clipping Frank Fielding’s post with a deflected shot.

Doherty returned the favour by teeing up Jimenez five minutes before the break but the Mexican striker’s shot was off-target.

Santo paid tribute to his all-action wing-back after the match:

Doherty has been fantastic. He has a big heart, he goes up and down, doesn’t rest and on the other side, Jonny. It’s a tough job and we are very, very happy with him. I think last season he had a fantastic season and this was a big challenge to prove himself in the Premier League and he’s doing so well.

Cavaleiro’s goal was the first shot of the match and Wolves were largely untroubled against their in-form Championship opponents in the first half, with Dendoncker wasting a presentable chance to double the visitors’ lead.

The Robins had only two attempts on goal before the interval, both of which failed to force John Ruddy (£4.2m) into action, but were much more of a threat in the second half – registering 17 shots, 14 of which were in a frantic last quarter.

None of Ruddy’s five saves were anything other than routine, however, with a couple of scrambles from corner-kicks (including an effort from goalkeeper Fielding) being as close as the hosts came to forcing extra-time.

Substitute Morgan Gibbs-White (£4.3m) tested Fielding at the other end, while Joao Moutinho (£5.4m) saw a free-kick tipped over.

Santo said of the match:

The first half was well-played. We kept the ball, we had chances and really unbalanced Bristol City, and could have put the game to bed.

In the second half, the momentum of the game was with Bristol City and sometimes the shape needs to adapt and we had to hold on until the end.

It was two different halves, first-half us, second-half Bristol City’s.

We tried to find solutions but it’s hard to defend when they put so many people in the box and put in long balls, you hope for the best sometimes. You just have to be ready, when you’re not ready you’re in trouble, if you are ready you’re always able to compete and stay in the game.

The boys were very brave today.  We had bodies behind the ball, protecting our box, it’s very hard. It was about getting the job done. We could have done better when we tried to go out, we played the ball too soon.

Rui Patricio (£4.5m), Ruben Neves (£4.9m) and Diogo Jota (£6.1m) were the only three players who dropped out of the Wolves starting XI from the side that drew with Newcastle last Monday.

Jota was a doubt for this FA Cup tie with a dead leg, with his manager having said on Friday:

Diogo started his problem against Everton. It was a big impact, a dead leg, so he’s been struggling since then.

Since then, we have taken care of him. We went to Marbella, and he didn’t get involved, but he trained enough to be ready to compete like he did in the last game.

This week, again, in this game (against Newcastle), he had a knock on the same place, so he didn’t train.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-5-2): Ruddy; Bennett, Coady, Boly; Doherty (Neves 81′), Dendoncker, Moutinho, Saiss, Jonny; Jimenez (Traore 90+2′), Cavaleiro (Gibbs-White 70′).

Have owned Auba and Aguero both at the wrong times this season lol.... from start of the season have gone Auba --> Aguero --> Auba and seem to have missed all of their biggest hauls!

Unsure what to do for GW28... if Auba fails vs SOU in GW27 as my captain I'll almost definitely drop him to get in Aguero, but Auba having BOU in GW28 does make me pause, as does the fact that Kun could see rotation due to UCL???

What are fellow Auba owners thinking? My only other City "player" is Sane, so that ain't going too hot.

Dunno what else you’re expecting to be discussed to be honest.

If you wanna have a good finish to the season it’s the only real discussion to have.

Newcastle (v Palace) could blank in GW33 so assume best to avoid buying Newc players?

Even if Palace get a tough draw they can still progress.

      Correct.

I did however get a Newcastle defender in last week as they still don’t blank 31 and have a cracking fixture this week v Huddersfield too.

I’d say you can get a defender in, or Rondon, but don’t go overboard !

Not worth worrying too much about 33, don't forget it can only have a maximum of 4 blank matches, so it is likely another defender you might have benched in 31 can take their place e.g. one of Doherty/AWB etc.

Shaw has some potential. Matip is useless bench fodder. Presumably you have a bench to use. If so, Matip is doing your squad no good so ditch him.

Right so I’ve just looked at my a possible transfer plan from now until GW31.

With a 16 point hit I can have this team in 31.

    Fab
Robo, pereira, Ake / Clyne / Chilwell
    Salah, Mane, Fanderson, Fraser
    Rondon, Barnes, King

I will then be able to free hit in 32 DGW, and hopefully manage the blank in 33 with a 4 point hit.

The question is, should I be taking a 16 point hit over the next 5 weeks or would I be better off just not fielding 11 in 31?

Just to add, I am happy with the teams I can field in the lead up to 31. I think the fixtures are quite kind for this approach.

WC in 34 and TC in 35 is the final plan.

Any thoughts or advise would be appreciated.

Quite a few of the transfers I would probably make anyway to be honest.

Planned transfers hardly every work out though so I guess I will play it by ear. 16 points does seem like a big hit to take at this point as I am currently just outside the top 1K. Very confusing this year.

Aguero could score 60min hat tricks or hit a double as a sub in last 30.
Pep Rotation or managed game time is on the cards but this is Man City and Sergio ‘Kun’ Aguero - FPL legend.

Agree. Jesus started 4 of last 5 and Aguero needed a run out last LC game. It's common for managers to keep faith in the second string players that have contributed to team getting to final

Aren't there two important questions before you can plan a BGW / DGW strategy?

    1) What is the draw for the 6th Round of the FA Cup?
    2) By when will we know the dates for the rescheduled GW31 fixtures?

      1) does it really matter? The GW31 blanks will be 100% confirmed after tomorrow night.

      2) some were saying earlier that this might not happen til around GW31.

Makes it hard to team build towards GW32 and FH31. FH32 becomes more desirable.

I have no recollection from previous years how early the scheduling lands

Last season the rearranged games for the quarters and semis were announced at the start of the international break. If they do the same this year, it will be after GW31. The reason it might not be the same this year is that it only leaves 15 days between the announcements and the games starting to be played.

The draw matters because you need to navigate GW33. This will depend on who blanks in GW33. If you use FH in GW31 or GW32, WC in GW34 and BB GW35 you still need to navigate GW33 with FTs.

For example - a draw of Man Utd vs Wolves would guarantee a BGW33 for both as they play each other in GW33. Many have 4 Wolves / Utd players (Pogba, Rashford, Doherty, Jimenez) - do you keep them all knowing they will blank in GW33 and you will be WCing in GW34?

True, but I don't want to be stuck with Burnley and West Ham players. Just free hit and get the best players from that GW and move on.

Essentially, you're trading out players that will have doubles in the run home just to get 11 players for GW31.

                Sorry but this is idiocy.

Bournemouth have Newcastle at home in GW31. They have played teams outside the top-6 at home 9 times this season and only once have failed to score at least twice. Fraser has 66 points in those 9 games, average 7.3 per game. Wilson has 55 points, average 6.1. They also have 4 CSs in those 9 games so the defenders are in play too. That's a plum fixture, right there.

West Ham have Huddersfield at home, probably the worst team in the division. West Ham have played 5 home games against non top-6 opposition since the beginning of November and have scored a total of 12 goals in those 5 games. Anderson has 31 points in them, average 6+ per game. Arnie only played in 3 of them and only lasted 39 minutes in one of those but still has 25 points, average 8.3.

Just because they may be games between unfashionable teams doesn't mean there are no points in them. A goal scored by Fraser is the same points as a goal scored by Son, isn't it?

To call GW31 "a rubbish GW" is a fundamental mistake. It isn't by any means. 🙂

Well, that's 2 of 4 games. Presumably you rate Liverpool @ Fulham. So your idea of a "rubbish GW" seems to come down to Burnley v Leicester?

Burnley have played 12 home games this season and 37 goals have been scored in those games, 22 by away teams. It looks good for Maddison/Vardy to me and I'd have no objection to a Leicester defender or two there either (preferably Maguire).

As it happens I will probably FH32, same as you. But I quite disagree with your idea that GW31 is going to be a bunch of 2-pointers from average players. That's why I commented.

I agree with you, I think the matches in 31 have the potential to be high scoring. Any reason why you are leaning towards Maguire as you Leicester def of choice ? I'm assuming it's his presence in the box/goal threat.

True that, but I suppose you saying you don't want to be stuck with these players could also be another reason not to use the FHC. You already think they are crap players so they will still be crap in a one off blank. Not sure it's worth using it just to bring in a load of 2 pointers.

For most, BGW31 should be pretty straightforward to navigate without using a chip

FH to get 11x DGW’ers in GW32 appeals to me much more than FH in GW31 to get (something like):

      Heaton
      Periera, Robbo, Lascelles
      Mane, Salah, Fraser, Felipe
      Arni, Wilson, Rondon

When you can get (something like):

      Dubravka/Schmeicel/Fab
      Robbo, TAA, Rice, Tark, Chilwell
      Salah, Fraser/Brooks
      Arnie, Wilson/King

For free between now & then with a FH in GW32, those same players (bar West Ham for now) having guaranteed fixtures in BGW33, followed by WC34 to setup BBDGW35 & TC Mo home to Huddersfield GW36.

The players from the shopping list below enable this and are pretty cheap with good fixtures - I.e rotateble and benchable in the run up to BGW31

      Rice, Felipe, Arnie
      Periera, Chilwell, Evans
      Lascelles, Schar, Yedlin
      Brooks, Fraser, Wilson, King

On theBGW31 V DGW32 FH debate. Assume for a second that Man Utd win tomorrow meaning only 4 games in BGW31 and all blank games are rescheduled to DGW 32. I can use free transfers between now and DGW32 to then use BB and get 15 DGW players, including Doherty, Kola, Hazard, Sterling, Son, Pogba, Auba, Jimenez, Rashford. I think most teams who hold out to FH in DGW32 will have a lot of these 9 players. If they don't then another factor is that if you want to FH in DGW 32, you will want to have an optimum starting 11, which is harder to pick from a much greater pool of players, unlike picking 11 if using FH in BGW31

All it needs is 1 good performance from some of those 8 teams playing in the next 4 gameweeks. Just 1 good week out of the next 4. If anything, this forum is utterly predictable. Zero chance people are going in with 5 players. None whatsoever. Minimum 8-9 players in each team for sure.

Hey guys, does this sound like a good plan?

    My GW31 team so far
Fabianski, Perreira, Robertson, Salah, Puncheon, Firmino

Got 4 free transfers until GW31 arrives so hopefully get 10 players out

Looking at Felipe Anderson, Rondon, Solanke, Chillwell, Madisson, Barnes and Rondon so far to fill those 4 spots.
Leicester and West Ham have good fixs from 28 onwards so a couple of those can be brought in first, save 2 frees for 31 to get me up ti 10 players. Lei, New and Bou have good fixs in GW33 (if those get played) so that is something to consider
10 starters would be great if it meant saving my FH for GW32, I am going to WC in 34 and BB 35

You could get a big hitter if Salah or City player get injured.

Not really sure who to drop:

    A) Schindler - Plays Newcastle although in the worst defence in the league. This is probably the only GW he could come good with the blanks and all.

    B) Saïss - Benched but could get minutes if Doherty is out?

    C) Save the FT

    C) Mane in for Sane (Means no City attack)

Re Free Hit 31 vs FH 32.

It seems to me it's a lot harder to FH a double gameweek successfully because there is always rotation. At least with a Blank you know all your players will play.

Am considering when to use the chips (all intact).
Reading though the posts a popular strategy seems to be FH32 WC34 BB35.
    When to use TC then?
Are there any DGW other than 32 and 35?
Or how about FH31 and TC32?

      Depends on your team.
Chelsea and Brighton might have 3 DGWs or a triple GW.

cool...so hope its not a triple gw (esp if the GW marked for BB) and its rather a 3rd dgw for TC.

Westham, leicester and later bournemouth have great run of fixtures so get their players! it's win-win situation! You gain both long term and bgw

    Hoping Chelsea lose tomorrow..

    Gw27 Diangana - Barnes

    Gw28 AWB - Smith

    Gw29 Save FT

    Gw30 Rashford - Arnautovic

    Gw31 Pogba/Aguero Jimenez out
    Mane/Higuian King/Wilson in
    -4

    Gw32 FH
    Gw33 10 players + FT
    Gw34 WC

Pros: Core squad kept intact ..
Fab Robbo Doc Son Pogba Kün Jimenez
    FH32, decent Gw33 team

Cons: No Arsenal Gw27, Richarlison gets to hang around a little longer..

Just need Man U to do the business tomorrow

Love the fact some are gonna FH 31, and others FH32 and too that some have used FH already. Some may even FH another later GW.

Wouldn’t it be boring and robotic if we all didn’t the same. Thee is no right or wrong.

It’s great to hear about others opinions, strategy and future plans, but what ever you do decide, make sure it’s you that decided. Own it. Great to listen to sheep but don’t follow the sheep for the sake of it.

All advice is great but remember your own decision counts the most.

    Good luck

In a very awkward sitation this season, OR rank and minileagues wise, I have a question as I'm not really in the loop, literally hating the guts of this season.

If playing a WC now, Should I take into concederation the next GWs in regards of DGWs ? Still have FH for the blanks.

    Cheers

I know none of this is confirmed but in an earlier post the below was mooted as possible GW 32 double:

    Brighton: Southampton (H) + Cardiff (H)
    Cardiff: Chelsea (H) + Brighton (a)
Man City: Fulham (a) + Man United (a)
Man United: Watford (H) + Man City (H)
    Southampton: Brighton (a) + Watford (a)
    Watford: Man United (a) + Southampton (H)

Any reason Wolves, Spurs, Palace and Arsenal aren't included as they are all confirmed missing games in GW 31? I'd only have a couple of players with DGW fixtures if they were the actual fixtures.

I have all chips left but no WC. Also I only have 3 players for GW 31 as it stands though I'll probably bring 1 or maybe 2 for a hit GW27 to put out a full team this week, both likely from teams with a game in GW 31. I was thinking of FH for 31 and hopefully have quite a few players in GW32 with DGW anyway and then possibly TC/BB. If I don't have many players in GW32 with DGW though it'd make more sense just to accept lack of players (and try and get some more in for meantime) for GW31 and use FG for 32. When will the GW32 DGW fixtures be confirmed? I think I read somewhere that it will be quite late but can't find where now.
