Doherty injury latest as more blanks confirmed in Gameweek 31

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Crystal Palace both overcame opponents from the Football League on Sunday to progress to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup – meaning that their respective Premier League fixtures in Gameweek 31 will now have to be rearranged.

Five sides from the top flight of English football have now reached the last eight of the FA Cup: Watford, Brighton and Hove Albion, Manchester City, Wolves and Crystal Palace.

Championship clubs Millwall and Swansea City have also made it through to the sixth round.

The one FA Cup fifth-round tie still to be contested, Chelsea v Manchester United, will determine whether Fantasy Premier League managers have five blanks to navigate in Gameweek 31 or six.

As of Sunday evening, the Gameweek 31 picture looks as follows:

Fixtures that will go ahead as scheduled:

Bournemouth v Newcastle United
Burnley v Leicester City
Fulham v Liverpool
West Ham United v Huddersfield Town

Fixtures that will be postponed until a later date:

Brighton and Hove Albion v Cardiff City
Manchester United v Manchester City
Spurs v Crystal Palace
Watford v Southampton
Wolves v Arsenal

Fixture that could still be a blank, depending on the result of Monday evening’s FA Cup tie:

Everton v Chelsea

Should Wolves and Palace’s Gameweek 31 fixtures be moved to Double Gameweek 32 (which is only a possibility at this stage and not a certainty) then Nuno Espirito Santo’s side would face Burnley (a) and Arsenal (h) in DGW32, with the Eagles playing Spurs (a) and Huddersfield Town (h).

READ MORE: How Manchester City and Brighton booked their passages into the FA Cup quarter-finals.

We’ll look at chip strategy and Blank Gameweek 31 in more detail once the result of Chelsea v Manchester United is known, while the Scout Notes for Doncaster Rovers v Crystal Palace will follow on Monday morning.

Our focus instead switches to the Sunday afternoon match at Ashton Gate, a game in which Matt Doherty took centre stage.

Bristol City 0-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

  • Goal: Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.2m)
  • Assist: Matt Doherty (£5.4m)

With Gameweek 27 already testing the depth of Fantasy managers’ squads, the last thing many FPL bosses needed was an injury to Matt Doherty (£5.4m).

The Irish wing-back is owned by more than one in four FPL managers and, as of Gameweek 26, sat in over 60% of Fantasy teams inside the top 10k.

The sight of Doherty limping from the pitch after 81 minutes of Wolves’ 1-0 won over Bristol City therefore sparked considerable concern in the Fantasy community, though the problem thankfully doesn’t seem to be a serious one.

Speaking after full-time, Nuno Espirito Santo said:

He had a knock and was not able to continue. It was tough, he held on for the maximum he could, but in the end, he had to come off.

Express and Star journalist Tim Spiers, meanwhile, posted the following:

Doherty impressed prior to his injury, having assisted Ivan Cavaleiro‘s (£5.4m) 28th-minute strike and having struck the woodwork himself soon after.

There was a sense of deja vu about the Ireland international’s role in the match-winning goal, with Doherty latching onto to a long diagonal ball from Conor Coady (£4.5m) before picking out Cavaleiro from the byline with a low cut-back.

Doherty nearly capped his performance with a goal two minutes later, combining beautifully with Leander Dendoncker (£4.3m) and Raul Jimenez (£6.8m) before clipping Frank Fielding’s post with a deflected shot.

Doherty returned the favour by teeing up Jimenez five minutes before the break but the Mexican striker’s shot was off-target.

Santo paid tribute to his all-action wing-back after the match:

Doherty has been fantastic. He has a big heart, he goes up and down, doesn’t rest and on the other side, Jonny. It’s a tough job and we are very, very happy with him. I think last season he had a fantastic season and this was a big challenge to prove himself in the Premier League and he’s doing so well.

Cavaleiro’s goal was the first shot of the match and Wolves were largely untroubled against their in-form Championship opponents in the first half, with Dendoncker wasting a presentable chance to double the visitors’ lead.

The Robins had only two attempts on goal before the interval, both of which failed to force John Ruddy (£4.2m) into action, but were much more of a threat in the second half – registering 17 shots, 14 of which were in a frantic last quarter.

None of Ruddy’s five saves were anything other than routine, however, with a couple of scrambles from corner-kicks (including an effort from goalkeeper Fielding) being as close as the hosts came to forcing extra-time.

Substitute Morgan Gibbs-White (£4.3m) tested Fielding at the other end, while Joao Moutinho (£5.4m) saw a free-kick tipped over.

Santo said of the match:

The first half was well-played. We kept the ball, we had chances and really unbalanced Bristol City, and could have put the game to bed.

In the second half, the momentum of the game was with Bristol City and sometimes the shape needs to adapt and we had to hold on until the end.

It was two different halves, first-half us, second-half Bristol City’s.

We tried to find solutions but it’s hard to defend when they put so many people in the box and put in long balls, you hope for the best sometimes. You just have to be ready, when you’re not ready you’re in trouble, if you are ready you’re always able to compete and stay in the game.

The boys were very brave today.  We had bodies behind the ball, protecting our box, it’s very hard. It was about getting the job done. We could have done better when we tried to go out, we played the ball too soon.

Rui Patricio (£4.5m), Ruben Neves (£4.9m) and Diogo Jota (£6.1m) were the only three players who dropped out of the Wolves starting XI from the side that drew with Newcastle last Monday.

Jota was a doubt for this FA Cup tie with a dead leg, with his manager having said on Friday:

Diogo started his problem against Everton. It was a big impact, a dead leg, so he’s been struggling since then.

Since then, we have taken care of him. We went to Marbella, and he didn’t get involved, but he trained enough to be ready to compete like he did in the last game.

This week, again, in this game (against Newcastle), he had a knock on the same place, so he didn’t train.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-5-2): Ruddy; Bennett, Coady, Boly; Doherty (Neves 81′), Dendoncker, Moutinho, Saiss, Jonny; Jimenez (Traore 90+2′), Cavaleiro (Gibbs-White 70′).

How many of your current 15 are confirmed as blanking in 31 then ?

    9 here

Chelsea v Man Utd has no effect on me but for reference if Chelsea win tomorrow then Everton v chelsea added to the other blanks, leaving us with just 4 games.

Silly statement. Last year has no bearing whatsoever on what will take place in GW31 this season. Absolutely none.

Limiting yourself to pick 6 players that deliver from those 8 teams (currently) would consist of more luck than judgement.

Probably 4 pt hit if I can save two frees from GW 30 and I'm happy with what is hopefully 9 players, 3 of which are already Liverpool.

To my mind the point of FH31 isn't to make the most of those four fixtures but rather to avoid having to bring in players from those four fixtures over the prior gameweeks.

You might be better to build a team from now to GW31 of 7-8 players (poor fixtures), FH in GW32 for the doubles and then have a lot of the same players from your squad available for GW33 which is also a BGW. By then you'll also have some players back that are out of the FA cup.

        my current team for 31

        Hamer
        TAA
        Salah-Puncheon

so yeah i'll more than likely FH since i don't want to tear my team apart to get in players i don't want just for one week, also by having so many blankers in 31 means my team is already set up for future double gw's where i can also use my TC , i'll worry about future blank gw's when the lack of fixtures are confirmed 🙂

So, assuming for a second that whether you FH in 31 or 32 depends on how many 31 blankers you currently have in your team, what's your limit?

In other words how many of your current players have to have a blank in GW31 before you decide that it's not worth your while spending transfers to fix it and to use the FH instead?

I have 5 with a nailed 31 fixture atm, but also 2 Everton & 2 FTs atm (which either way will bring it up to 6). I can't see any scenario at this point that would tempt me into FH31, given the dross on offer that GW.

Just came to me that depending on how far we are from leaders in our respective MLs, we could achieve significant differential if we save FH to use in the very last GW as some players may not play depending on their league standings, eg aguero Sterling Salah etc may not involve if league was already won same applies to teams in top 4 fight n relegation battle - then we can set the team based on the ML teams - this cud easily give us 30-40 point differential if used properly

Can get 100+ points ahead of rivals if nail FH in dgw

Nah, no way worth 40 points on last gw. reckon league will go to the wire. Free hit ideal for a messy blank gw.

That's always been my thought at the start of the season but I can't make it to 38 without the FH. Just too many big weeks where it is more useful.

I'm more likely to save TC until then than FH. Lots of goals seem to go in on the last day, IIRC Kane loves it.

      Fab
      Robbo • Doherty • Digne
      Salah • Pogba • Son • Jota
      Rashford • Jimènez € Kamara

      (Button / TAA / Awb / Hazard)
      2 Fts

Digne & Kamara ➡️ Yedlin & Rondon for free?

Will do Son to Sterling in GW28.

Will have 6-7 players + 3 transfers from GW29 to build for GW31 blank and then FH32.

      FH 31 Strategy.

For those planning to FH in GW 31, Getting players who blanks in 31 (DGW in 32) and is blank free in GW 33 is the key.
Currently its only Arsenal and Southampton, but if Chelsea manages to beat United tomorrow. Then Wolves and United can be added to that list. So if United indeed does get knocked out, then FH 31 will look even more tempting for those who have a few Wolves and United assets like me. Imagine keeping Pogba,Rash, Jimenez and Doherty for DGW 32 and BGW 33 and WC 34 and analyse.
So if United gets knocked out tomorrow,
      Its
      GW 31 FH
      GW 32 FT/TC
      GW 33 FT
      GW 34 WC
      GW 35 BB

Maximum 4/15 players in current squad can play for me in GW31...

With my current team (haven't ditched Sane/Alonso yet this GW), I only have Boruc Fabianski Robertson Salah and maybe Alonso playing in BGW31...

              Fabianski
              Robertson Doherty** AWB** Bednarek** Alonso?
              Salah Son** Pogba** Sane** Camarasa**
              Auba** Jimenez** Rashford**

Relucant to drop any of Doherty, Jimenez, Pogba, Son as have value tied up and would want em back...

All chips intact. Plan is to bring in either Felipe or Pereira for Sane/Alonso this GW, but wwyd w/ regard to blanks/doubles at this point? Anyone in similar position w/ so few players playing in GW31? Makes FH31 more appealing...

Yeah that's the thing innit? I see why people are advocating more for FH32 but idk if I could scrape through BGW31 enough with FTs to make it worthwhile not using the FH then...

Do we have any idea of the teams that are blanking in GW33, too?

The combos for blanks in GW33 for a start.

Man City drawing Brighton means one of those GW33 games will be available etc.
You can have some players from both future games and have some GW33 cover.

Will be whoever gets through the FAC Quarters and whoever they’re playing in 33. May get a better idea after tomorrow’s game and the draw but not fully.

I think what some people are overlooking is that they probably have the majority of a very good DGW32 team already.

9 teams sitting with potential blank 31&33.

Another 3 with games in 31 could blank 33 (W Ham, Newcastle and Fulham)

Leaves 8 teams who defo won’t blank 33
(Liverpool, Arsenal, Everton, Bournemouth, Leicester, Burnley, Southampton and Huddersfield)

West Ham, Newcastle and Fulham (if Chelsea, Palace and Watford make the FA cup semi’s)

              Category 3- Blank 31 & No blank 33 (2 teams + 1 tbc)
Southampton and Arsenal (Everton join if Chelsea win 2moro)

Spurs and Cardiff (depends on others), Brighton, Watford, Man City, Wolves, Palace along with Chelsea & Man U (depends if they make FA Cup semi finals

Posting for my own reference, but feel free to use as a simplistic, yet confusing-as-hell guide to the FH31 strategy, if you're looking into this as a possibility. Here are the teams desirable to buy players from, roughly ranked from most to least desirable within each category (I assume Chelsea win tomorrow for now).

              - In brackets: fixtures for GW32 and GW33. Approx probability of fixture going ahead where necessary

              - The numbers: Approx fixture difficulty from GW27-30, GW27 in brackets. 1 = easy; 3 = hard.

              Starting XI players:

Arsenal (wol NEW | eve) ...[1]133
              Chelsea (eve car | WHU < 50%) ...312
Man City (mun ful | CAR 25%) ...111
              Spurs (CRY liv | BOU 40%) ...[1]321
              United (MCI WAT | wol 30%) ...[3]212
              Wolves (ARS bur | MUN 30%) ...[1]113

              Players benchable prior to GW32*:

Arsenal (wol NEW | eve) ...[1]133
Brighton (CAR SOU | tot) ...212
Southampton (wat bha | LIV) ...[3]133
              Wolves (ARS bur | MUN 30%) ...[1]113
              Watford (SOU mun | FUL 50%) ...[1]313
              Everton (CHE whu | ARS < 50%)* ...131
              Cardiff (bha CHE | mci 25%) ...[2]222

Players benchable in GW32 (and prior)**:

              Liverpool (TOT | sou) ...[3]111
              Leicester (BOU | hud) ...[1]121
              Burnley (WOL | bou) ...[3]113
              Huddersfield (cry | LEI) ...[1]221
              Bournemouth (lei | BUR) ...[2]331

              Avoid for now:

              Newcastle (ars | CRY 50%) ...[1]122
              West Ham (EVE | che 60%) ...[1]311
              Fulham (MCI | wat 50%) ...[2]132

*Maximum 2 outfield players unless I rotate, as I already have Solanke who I don't really want to play based on current form (could sell him).

**Maximum of 3 outfield players: Currently already have Robbo, TAA and Solanke. May need a GK for GW33 if Patricio blanks, however.

Cheers. Yeah I've been hoping for this strategy to fall into place since a month ago, as I started to leaning towards it with the transfers I've made. I'm likely to go with it just to be different, since my players are begging me to go for broke and I'm at a disadvantage to other FH32ers if I switch to that strategy now.

Why are Arsenal and Wolves listed twice?

EVE v ARS in GW33 shouldn't be listed as less than 50%
Spurs play Brighton, not Bournemouth in GW33. Brighton should have a percentage (40%?)
CHE v WHU in GW33 is listed as less than 50% for Chelsea but as 60% for West Ham.

Because I think Arsenal are a team that fits both categories, mainly because Kolasinac is cheap enough to fit the "benchable" category.

Yep, those are mistakes, cheers. Should be:

                  Starting XI:
                  Chelsea (eve car | WHU < 50%) ...312
                  Spurs (CRY liv | BHA 40%) ...[1]321

                  Benchable before GW32:
Everton (CHE whu | ARS) ...131
Brighton (CAR SOU | tot 40%)

                  Avoid:
                  West Ham (EVE | che < 50%) ...[1]311

I'll double check everything before I post the update.

My rule with defenders is anyone over 4.5m should be played almost every week or downgrade them. If I followed that rule I wouldn't have missed out on Digne 17pts

It all changes when you're planning for blanks and doubles though, because you truly have up to 15 players you might want to play in any given week, rather than more like 11-13 during the rest of the season. I wouldn't buy Kolasinac, for example, if I didn't want him for the chip strategy, so the price I'd pay for him includes the extra fixture I would get. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't have bought him.

Regardless, I don't see the problem in even paying 7.0 for a player and benching him 1 week out of 10, say. A player can be worth his pricetag across 9 games, even if you bench him against City in the middle. And if any decision you make doesn't work on one occassion, it doesn't mean it was a bad decision.

How about bench boosting in GW32 (easy to set up at least 27-28 plays)? Than wc in GW34 and TC in DGW35. Both chips in DGW

I'm thinking of Bench Boosting in GW32, mainly because I've already used my Wildcard.
If I did still have my Wildcard then I would probably play it in GW34, followed by Bench Boost in GW35.

These plans may possibly change though when we are told which matches will be rearranged to which DGWs.
Last season many of the matches postponed from the quarter-final weekend were moved to the later DGW, and matches from the semi--final weekend moved to the earlier DGW, which was the opposite to what we had expected.

I wrote a long response to this but it got way too confusing haha. The main point is that, it will be difficult to get near to 15 players with a DGW in GW32, and then difficult to get 11 players out for GW33. You would need to sort out 2 GKs with a DGW, one of which must have a GW33 fixture too. Plus you would need to focus transfers onto Arsenal and Southampton players to begin with, as they are the only teams we know to have 3 fixtures in 2 weeks. But Southampton play LIV in GW33 so they are not desirable that week, which doesn't help.

Even with 6 players from these teams, you are a long way short of the 13ish you need to make it work perfectly, without many transfers left, if any, before GW32 (if you use FH in GW31, you currently only have 4-6 more transfers anyway). So you would have to hope that the GW32 fixtures are announced early, and fall kindly for players you already have and that the stars align such that they you want to keep them anyway and/or they are cheap enough to bench, etc etc. Just seems unlikely to work, and suboptimal if it does.

So basically you need bench players who play in GW33 but only have one fixture in GW32, which makes a BB less desirable, unless you're happy to target specific desirable single fixtures for points from the bench.

On the other hand, a WC in GW34 would allow you to set up for a BB in GW35 with 15 DGWer without having to plan well in advance and navigate a blank week directly after it.

Sorry, that ended up being long-winded anyway. I don't know any other way 😆

Hmm...amendment: I guess you would ideally need All 15 players to have a DGW in GW32, while a minimum of 10 players also have a fixture in GW33. And at the moment we only know 2 teams who have both a DGW and a fixture in 33, if I'm not mistaken. So you would likely need 3-6 FTs get to 6 necessary players, and then up to 4 more FTs to get to 10, and that's forgetting about ensuring 15 of your players have a DGW too.

I am confused because DGW32 fixtures haven’t been announced ?

Why ? buying players on the ssumptions that certain teams get a double in 32 when they may actually not get that double in 32 seems key ?

I did exactly that last season and was burned by certain doubles being brought forward to the early DGW and others being deferred to the latter DGW

The fixtures are hypothetical, not confirmed. You can't run with the FH31 strategy without making these assumptions (or factoring in the likelihood of each postponed fixture landing in GW32, which is pretty much beyond the realm of feasability).

I should have made this clear, but I was just running with the assumptions as a given to be more succinct and give me the spare time to watch It's Always Sunny in Philidelphia instead.

For me this explains why you can’t commit to FH31 strategy at all, or at the very least until you know the doubles, which could very likely be after the GW31 FA Cup results, because the TV companies will want to carve up the televised games between GW32 & GW35, or maybe even another mini double game week

Thanks, I think we've had this discussion before. Given my team, and which PL teams and players I am interested in, I'm willing to take the risk this season. It could backfire, but this post is really just a gudeline for anyone who has decided to run with the strategy, or is considering it, rather than an argument for the strategy in the first place.

Think that's what the % in brackets are meant for- Approx probability of fixture going ahead where necessary

Not sure how they're calculated though...

I think you are correct, but it doesn’t tell you when it will be played ... so Chelsea 50% chance of a double due to the FA Cup, but no idea when that double will actually be played though 🙂

Those are the GW33 fixtures. Taken directly from Crellin's sheet, and rounded to the nearest 5. E.g. 76.03% chance of City vs Cardiff blanking in GW33 = 25% chance of the fixture going ahead. However, I have made some mistakes.

The case of the Chelsea vs West Ham game in GW33 is different, because we don't know if Chelsea will go through to R6 (GW31 blank) yet. Assuming they win tonight, I have slapped a < 50% probability of the GW33 game going ahead, since don't have the odds for that game, and I presume it is more likely than not that they will win their R6 game, but these numbers will make a bit more sense after the R6 draw.

Ah ok don't know why I thought that by 'fixture going ahead where necessary' you were trying to predict chances of blank rearrangements to 32 instead of 35 haha ignore me

There only seems to be about 100 points separating 500k ranks in my ML, this doesn't seem much at all. Is this season different to most? Seems a lot tighter this season.
