Doherty injury latest as more blanks confirmed in Gameweek 31

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Crystal Palace both overcame opponents from the Football League on Sunday to progress to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup – meaning that their respective Premier League fixtures in Gameweek 31 will now have to be rearranged.

Five sides from the top flight of English football have now reached the last eight of the FA Cup: Watford, Brighton and Hove Albion, Manchester City, Wolves and Crystal Palace.

Championship clubs Millwall and Swansea City have also made it through to the sixth round.

The one FA Cup fifth-round tie still to be contested, Chelsea v Manchester United, will determine whether Fantasy Premier League managers have five blanks to navigate in Gameweek 31 or six.

As of Sunday evening, the Gameweek 31 picture looks as follows:

Fixtures that will go ahead as scheduled:

Bournemouth v Newcastle United
Burnley v Leicester City
Fulham v Liverpool
West Ham United v Huddersfield Town

Fixtures that will be postponed until a later date:

Brighton and Hove Albion v Cardiff City
Manchester United v Manchester City
Spurs v Crystal Palace
Watford v Southampton
Wolves v Arsenal

Fixture that could still be a blank, depending on the result of Monday evening’s FA Cup tie:

Everton v Chelsea

Should Wolves and Palace’s Gameweek 31 fixtures be moved to Double Gameweek 32 (which is only a possibility at this stage and not a certainty) then Nuno Espirito Santo’s side would face Burnley (a) and Arsenal (h) in DGW32, with the Eagles playing Spurs (a) and Huddersfield Town (h).

READ MORE: How Manchester City and Brighton booked their passages into the FA Cup quarter-finals.

We’ll look at chip strategy and Blank Gameweek 31 in more detail once the result of Chelsea v Manchester United is known, while the Scout Notes for Doncaster Rovers v Crystal Palace will follow on Monday morning.

Our focus instead switches to the Sunday afternoon match at Ashton Gate, a game in which Matt Doherty took centre stage.

Bristol City 0-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

  • Goal: Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.2m)
  • Assist: Matt Doherty (£5.4m)

With Gameweek 27 already testing the depth of Fantasy managers’ squads, the last thing many FPL bosses needed was an injury to Matt Doherty (£5.4m).

The Irish wing-back is owned by more than one in four FPL managers and, as of Gameweek 26, sat in over 60% of Fantasy teams inside the top 10k.

The sight of Doherty limping from the pitch after 81 minutes of Wolves’ 1-0 won over Bristol City therefore sparked considerable concern in the Fantasy community, though the problem thankfully doesn’t seem to be a serious one.

Speaking after full-time, Nuno Espirito Santo said:

He had a knock and was not able to continue. It was tough, he held on for the maximum he could, but in the end, he had to come off.

Express and Star journalist Tim Spiers, meanwhile, posted the following:

Doherty impressed prior to his injury, having assisted Ivan Cavaleiro‘s (£5.4m) 28th-minute strike and having struck the woodwork himself soon after.

There was a sense of deja vu about the Ireland international’s role in the match-winning goal, with Doherty latching onto to a long diagonal ball from Conor Coady (£4.5m) before picking out Cavaleiro from the byline with a low cut-back.

Doherty nearly capped his performance with a goal two minutes later, combining beautifully with Leander Dendoncker (£4.3m) and Raul Jimenez (£6.8m) before clipping Frank Fielding’s post with a deflected shot.

Doherty returned the favour by teeing up Jimenez five minutes before the break but the Mexican striker’s shot was off-target.

Santo paid tribute to his all-action wing-back after the match:

Doherty has been fantastic. He has a big heart, he goes up and down, doesn’t rest and on the other side, Jonny. It’s a tough job and we are very, very happy with him. I think last season he had a fantastic season and this was a big challenge to prove himself in the Premier League and he’s doing so well.

Cavaleiro’s goal was the first shot of the match and Wolves were largely untroubled against their in-form Championship opponents in the first half, with Dendoncker wasting a presentable chance to double the visitors’ lead.

The Robins had only two attempts on goal before the interval, both of which failed to force John Ruddy (£4.2m) into action, but were much more of a threat in the second half – registering 17 shots, 14 of which were in a frantic last quarter.

None of Ruddy’s five saves were anything other than routine, however, with a couple of scrambles from corner-kicks (including an effort from goalkeeper Fielding) being as close as the hosts came to forcing extra-time.

Substitute Morgan Gibbs-White (£4.3m) tested Fielding at the other end, while Joao Moutinho (£5.4m) saw a free-kick tipped over.

Santo said of the match:

The first half was well-played. We kept the ball, we had chances and really unbalanced Bristol City, and could have put the game to bed.

In the second half, the momentum of the game was with Bristol City and sometimes the shape needs to adapt and we had to hold on until the end.

It was two different halves, first-half us, second-half Bristol City’s.

We tried to find solutions but it’s hard to defend when they put so many people in the box and put in long balls, you hope for the best sometimes. You just have to be ready, when you’re not ready you’re in trouble, if you are ready you’re always able to compete and stay in the game.

The boys were very brave today.  We had bodies behind the ball, protecting our box, it’s very hard. It was about getting the job done. We could have done better when we tried to go out, we played the ball too soon.

Rui Patricio (£4.5m), Ruben Neves (£4.9m) and Diogo Jota (£6.1m) were the only three players who dropped out of the Wolves starting XI from the side that drew with Newcastle last Monday.

Jota was a doubt for this FA Cup tie with a dead leg, with his manager having said on Friday:

Diogo started his problem against Everton. It was a big impact, a dead leg, so he’s been struggling since then.

Since then, we have taken care of him. We went to Marbella, and he didn’t get involved, but he trained enough to be ready to compete like he did in the last game.

This week, again, in this game (against Newcastle), he had a knock on the same place, so he didn’t train.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-5-2): Ruddy; Bennett, Coady, Boly; Doherty (Neves 81′), Dendoncker, Moutinho, Saiss, Jonny; Jimenez (Traore 90+2′), Cavaleiro (Gibbs-White 70′).

]Which pair do you prefer ?.

    A) Sterling Jimenez

    B) Jota Aguero (or any other mid below 6.5).

I had always planned to bring Jota in for Richarlison however his recent injury has me re-thinking that. Perhaps B with Moutinho? Saying this as I prefer Aguero over Sterling.

If last season is anything to go by, we can not assume GW31 blanks get moved to DGW32 or that GW33 blanks get moved to DGW35 ... the TV scheduling may result in the games being shuffled around and even moved to other gameweeks ... I learned this to my peril last season whilst using the FH for the early BGW and stacking my team with players I ‘thought’ would get a double in the earlier DGW ... be warned 🙂

yep, its team dependent, someone with only 1-2 players for GW31 has no choice but to FH in 31 or roll with only 6-7 players.

I think ... If Chelsea get knocked out of the FA Cup it means the following teams will have games in both 31 & 33 ... Chelsea, Everton WHU, Liverpool, Burnley, Bourenmouth, Hudds, Leicester

If Chelsea get through, these teams will have games both in 31 & 33 ... Liverpool, Burnley, Bourenmouth, Hudds, Leicester

What would you do with this lot?

    Fab* (Pat)
    Kola Doherty AWB Schindler* (Alonso**)
    Salah* Son Pogba Anderson* (Richo**)
    Jim Rashford (Kamara)

Currently 4 for GW31 with Alonso+Richo to possible make 6 although I don't want either.

What would you do this week if Chelsea won?
If Chelsea lose, seeing either is a lot easier.

    Cheers in advance.

For all of you wondering about Ricardo vs Chilwell... Regardless of stats, Ricardo is capable of creating more assists and goals because his end product is of a greater quality than Chilwell's. Ricardo's crosses are better, his shots are better, that's why he has 8 attacking returns compared to Chilwell's 3.

Yeah I think my strategy is to set up a team for 31. FH 32. Go back to 31s team for 33.

Bench boost could happen anytime. I'm tempted to play it next week but I have Anderson v City.

If i do digne to pereira, i cant do eriksen to mane next week without a hit. For me it's chilwell vs rice.

I heard Chilwell is posting similar stats to Periera just not getting the points. Plus again he feels like a more attacking threat to Rice.

Go with your gut mate but I'd go Chilwell.

Those planning to FH or WC in 32, when are you planning to use BB and FH?

There will be teams “on the beach” and starting squad players later in the season, you can only use one of BB/TC in a DGW (assuming they’re in 32&35), which would you use in the DGW?

I’m looking at WC30, FH31, BB32, TC35, but comes with the risk of navigating BGW33 without knowing what he blanks are before I use the WC...

    1. Numbuster
      • 7 Years
      5 years, 2 months ago

Use BB when your 15 player is ready.
Use TC when your high potential return player during SGW or DGW (its depend)

Use FH when your WC team is not ready, and alot absense player (example GW 32)

Try not to use as much Hit as you can, to be maintain the rank of the games

    2. pingissimus

      5 years, 2 months ago

      Ha

I’m looking seriously at BB in 32, WC in 33 and FH 35 (TC in 25 played).

Part of the rationale is that it gives me more time with an optimised WC squad than WC in 34. I’m really waiting to see how many 31 games get put in 35.

I’m expecting to have a decent 32 squad anyway as my 31 players have decent matches then and I should still have a couple of premiums who don’t feature and might hit a DGW in 32

  23. pingissimus

Anyone else with BB 32 in mind?

If a few of the 31 matches get pushed later than 32 this could be a decent strategy. If Chelsea go out and I bring in Higuain to add to Luiz I can see myself wanting to play my entire squad that week possibly - it’s Palace Huddersfield.

That would leave me with WC in 33/4 and FH. In 35.

Those of you WITHOUT a Wildcard - How are you planning the BGWKs and DGWKs??

I'm thinking of the following strategy (hoping for a draw that doesn't result in a large DGWK for 35 as well as a Chelsea Loss tonight).

    Plan for BGWK 31
    FH for DGWK 32
BGWK 33 should be pretty straight forward with most of 31 playing there? (correct me if I'm wrong)
(Use transfers for 32/33/34/35 to bring in 4 players + my 3 benched players from 31) for the DGWK 35 so a hopeful 7 DGWK players

So I've planned to use FH DGWK 32 and TC DGWK 35, Bench boost will also probably be used somewhere around the blanks when I feel I have a decent 15 players playing or could also be saved for the last gwk if I can navigate a good gwk38 team

    1. joeydelucchi
      • 7 Years
      5 years, 2 months ago

Yes I think this is the best strategy, I was keen on FH 31 because I will be very happy with my lineup next week and will not want to mess it up so to speak to bring in players for 31, however the fact that 31 and 33 are so similar I think it’s a no brainier...Fh in 32 could give you 3 very good game weeks there...and I am actually more inclined to do like a mini wildcard after 30 as opposed to bringing in players each week that mess up my team...maybe a -8? Plus Arnie next week...and Schär and Boruc for my bench leading up to it. This would give me around 10 players

      1. Gegenpress
        • 7 Years
        5 years, 2 months ago

Mini wildcard is not a bad shout.. I've been going hit crazy this season anyway! I'm looking at West Ham players maybe after their city game, Pereira in this gwk for Shaw potentially..

        I currently have:

Speroni Etheridge (So need a keeper for 31)

Robbo AWB Bednarek Shaw Doherty (Need 2 defenders at least)

Mane Salah Hazard Jota Pogba (Hopefully just 1 mid)

Rashford Jimenez Long (Will need strikers Vardy / Higuain / Wilson all look decent options)

        Potentially have the following blanking:

        Liverpool
        Leicester
        Bournemouth
        Chelsea (Hopefully)
        Everton
        West Ham

I have 3 Liverpool, so will look at adding 2-3 Leicester (Pereira, Chillwell, Vardy), Bournemouth Fraser / Wilson, Chelsea Higuain, West Ham Arny / Anderson, Everton ??

Maybe a 442 (keeping Rashford Pogba Doherty)

So Bed / Shaw to Pereira / another
Jota to Anderson / Fraser / Maddi (will judge this)
Long / Jimenez to 2 of Higuain Vardy and Arny

Will consider a -4 for keeper or not before gwk 31 deadline

I have 3.1 itb so fairly flexible could take Bednarek out this week so I have shaw for the following 2 or could do Long - Arny and bench shaw this week (play AWB Doherty and Robbo).

You need to look at the fixture pairings IMO as this will determine when to play your FH without compromising on the other GWs

      Compare GW 31, 33, 34, 35 with GW 32, 33, 34, 35

What is the optimal squad for each pair?

GW32 FH looks best, particularly if Chelsea's DGW with Brighton is moved to GW35. Then TC Higuain / Hazard looks viable for GW35.

Need Chelsea to lose today for this to happen though.

        1. Gegenpress

Yes I agree re Chelsea losing would be a big win for my situation would really help structure a half decent team for bgwk.. I realised with my free transfers if Chelsea lose then I can only get 9 players for the bgwk anyway.. So will take 2 strategic -4's when I need to.

Was planning to use FTs for GW31 then WC, FH subsequent weeks.

BUT have Aubameyang/ Aguero, Jimenez, and Rashford up front and 3 Liverpool already so can’t go Firmino.

What forwards can I get for GW31 that won’t weaken team preceding weeks???

Vardy, Arnautovic maybe but you could lose points in run up. Tricky.
