Eleven teams guaranteed a Double Gameweek as Palace progress in FA Cup

Crystal Palace’s comfortable 2-0 victory over Doncaster Rovers on Sunday afternoon means that the Eagles will join at least ten other Premier League sides in having one (or more) Double Gameweek in the months ahead.

Five top-flight matches originally pencilled in for Gameweek 31 will have to be rescheduled as a consequence of this weekend’s FA Cup fifth-round ties, while Chelsea are guaranteed a Double Gameweek regardless of their result against Manchester United on Monday evening as their Gameweek 27 fixture against Brighton and Hove Albion remains outstanding.

Just when these postponed Premier League games will be rearranged for remains unconfirmed but Gameweek 32 looks the obvious candidate at this stage.

The 11 sides who will definitely enjoy a Double Gameweek are:

Arsenal
Brighton
Cardiff
Chelsea
Crystal Palace
Manchester City
Manchester United
Southampton
Spurs
Watford
Wolves

Everton will join that contingent if Chelsea beat Manchester United on Monday night, as the Toffees are scheduled to face Maurizio Sarri’s troops in Gameweek 31.

We discussed the Blank Gameweek 31 picture in greater detail in our Scout Notes for Wolves’ victory over Bristol City, while we will analyse possible chip strategies in the coming days ahead.

The remainder of this article will instead focus on Palace’s success at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Doncaster Rovers 0-2 Crystal Palace

  • Goals: Jeffrey Schlupp (£4.4m), Max Meyer (£5.6m)
  • Assists: Luka Milivojevic (£6.2m), Andros Townsend (£5.9m)

Wilfried Zaha (£6.7m) will be free to feature in Gameweek 27 after serving a one-match suspension for improper conduct in Sunday’s victory over Doncaster Rovers.

Crystal Palace’s initial appeal had left Zaha free to play against West Ham United in Gameweek 26 but the Football Association’s subsequent rejection of that appeal left the Ivorian sidelined for the Eagles’ FA Cup fifth-round tie in South Yorkshire.

Zaha has two goals and as many assists in his last five Premier League starts.

Palace didn’t particularly miss their talismanic winger on Sunday as they coasted to a 2-0 win over their League One opponents but, by the same token, the likes of Michy Batshuayi (£6.5m) and Jordan Ayew (£5.7m) failed to impress in his stead.

Ayew struggled in an unfamiliar role on the left of Roy Hodgson’s 4-3-3, while Batshuayi looked rusty on his first start in a Palace shirt.

The Chelsea loanee had a free header blocked in the first half before his heavy touch ruined a one-on-one chance on 72 minutes and there was little evidence to suggest he might oust Christian Benteke (£6.3m) from the Palace starting XI in Gameweek 27, let alone enter the mid-price FPL forward debate this week.

Luka Milivojevic (£6.2m) was perhaps the best Palace player on show at the Keepmoat, setting Jeffrey Schlupp (£4.4m) on his way for the Eagles’ opening goal before “assisting the assister” for his side’s second strike: Max Meyer (£5.6m) nodding in from close range after Andros Townsend (£5.9m) had headed Milivojevic’s excellent chipped pass back across goal.

Milivojevic and Townsend aren’t the most exciting of midfield picks but for those Fantasy bosses looking for security of starts when, for example, compiling a Double Gameweek free-hit side, the pair are reliable sorts: the Palace duo are two of just five FPL midfielders – team-mate James McArthur (£4.8m) being another – who have started in each of the 26 Gameweeks contested this season.

Again thanks mostly to his penalty-taking duties, Milivojevic is well on his way to matching his ten-goal haul of 2017/18 – the Serbia international has seven Premier League strikes to his name already this season.

The Palace set-piece specialist (who it should be said is already on eight yellow cards this season) was again his side’s arch-creator at Doncaster, registering more key passes (five) than anyone on show.

Townsend has a modest seven attacking returns to his name this season (four goals, three assists) but his role on the right-hand side of Hodgson’s 4-3-3 is seemingly his to lose: the former Spurs and Newcastle winger has featured in every single one of Palace’s competitive matches this season, with the EFL Cup second-round tie at Swansea the only game in which he hasn’t started.

Elsewhere on Palace-watch, FPL defender Schlupp scored for the second successive match while playing “out of position” in central midfield.

The return to fitness of Cheikhou Kouyate (£4.7m), who emerged as a second-half substitute on Sunday, may threaten his security of starts, however.

Patrick van Aanholt (£5.4m) was the only one of Palace’s regular back four to be given a run-out, meanwhile, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.6m) rested and James Tomkins (£4.3m) returning from a calf injury on the bench.

Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) started ahead of Vicente Guaita (£4.2m) in the Palace goal, with Hodgson suggesting after the match that he will continue to use the Welsh custodian in cup matches – though the budget FPL goalkeeper still faces an FA hearing for an alleged gesture in January.

Hodgson said:

I had no doubts about him playing. He deserves to play and was very good today. He’s played in all the cup matches so far and whatever the draw is I would expect him to play in the next one too.

The charge is what it is. We’ve spoken about that at great length. We are both hoping and confident that charge won’t lead to any particular sanctions.

Hodgson added on the game itself:

I thought both teams tried to play good football. There were some good moves from both sides and we were able, not just us but Doncaster too, to get the ball down and under some control.

They [the Palace players] worked very, very hard. Even the players who didn’t have the best of games worked very, very hard to make certain that we gave nothing away. But I’m fortunate that I’ve come to a club where it’s par for the course that players are like that.

Our priority and our focus still remains the same, that we would like to do well in the cup but we would like even more to stay in the Premier League. That always remains the priority.

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Hennessey; Ward, Kelly, Dann, Van Aanholt; Milivojevic, Schlupp, Meyer; Ayew (Kouyate 60′), Batshuayi (Benteke 75′),
Townsend (McArthur 80′).

Have WC and planning to FH in GW 31. Means I can play around a bit with FTs.

    A) Aguero to Auba this week to have a H captain (other option are away: Son, Mane, Salah, Pogba) and maby get him back next week?

    B) Other option is a defender to Kola, Pereira etc.

I need to sell a player, but selling Aguero now involves a loss of 0.1m value and buying back at 11.5 as I'm not going into West Ham without him. Prior to the hat-tricks the plan was to move on for Auba for two weeks. Maybe Rich to Fanderson(c) for me instead now and save taking a loss on Rich and punt on him doing well vs Foolham!

Looks like I'm definitely free hitting in BG31 then. Only got four players, plus Rich, Digne and Hazard if Utd win tonight..but I plan to move on Rich or Digne this week to get XI out BGW27!

Barnes, Arnie, Firmino front three, with Salah, Fanderson and Hazard in mid..we'll see.

Got these for GW31 - Fab, TAA, Salah, Mane and Pereira....planning these transfers....

    GW28 Son to Maddison.
GW29 Jimenez or Rashford to Barnes or Arnie
    GW30 Camarasa to Fraser

All chips left to play......how’s it looking?

Not really a fan of using so many weeks to get rid of good players for not that good players, just for letting them play in one probably very low scoring game week

Tricky - Son does have a bad fixture GW28 but looks pretty good apart from that (don't get fooled by the ticker's red rating for Arsenal at home!!)

Son to Maddison is a bad move as Son has a better expected score in every single week from now till 31 (by nearly 5 points across the 3 GW) - just save a transfer and do that move in 30 instead. Rest look fine.

"Mini Leagues is important to me than overall Rank."

How does that work? The better the OR the better your position in the mini leagues.

Basically when I sign on after a gameweek my priority is performance in my cash ML.

Of course the two are intertwined, but if I get a red arrow on OR but maintain in ML im not bothered in the slightest

      2. AndyCook

This is an oversimplification. When it comes to the back end of the season you can choose to get in the same players that your opponent has to limit their ability to catch up or get players they don’t have to catch up and these players may not be the players you would get for rank alone. You can’t know who the best players will be so someone playing for rank will go for the best players on paper regardless of who else has them whereas if you are chasing you might deliberately discount these players because although they are more likely to score well if the person you are chasing has them too then you cannot catch up, you take the low probability that other players will score well and on average this will be more likely to backfire and lead to a fall in overall rank.

      IF you have

      Auba,Jota,Kamara,kiko + 1.5m itb
      & 4 FT.
Who would you get considering they'll play in gw 31/33 ??

Can get a City player for intermediate gw's too.

Thank you for your inputs !!

Jota to Brooks/ Fraser looks natural in 30

You could also consider Bournemouth defence for Kiko - neither Burnley or Newcastle are prolific away. Bournemouth do get clean sheets at home and Clyne could be a tidy differential with attack potential.

Kamara to Rondon is possible. But you need to do that now for the Huddersfield fixture - otherwise pointless.

          Yeah.

          Except Burnley part.

Yep Barnes is tempting in the budget role as is Wood though he’s a price bracket up I guess.

I don’t have them (going Rondon myself) but I do have Burnley as one of those teams that will outperform fixtures generally from here on in.

The others are Palace and Newcastle. I’m backing managers here and solid defensive set ups

i am currently devising a transfer plan which would enable my team for 31(11 starters) and 32(6x double players) without using any chip and taking -8 between now and 31 total.
since i used my wc early i think saving a free hit for 35 might be a way to go to catch up with everyone who saved their wc chip for 34/35.

but out of given options i think building team for double gw and free hit for blank would be better option.

What's the benefit in waiting until GW34 to Wildcard?

That only leaves 5 gameweeks to utilise a supposedly better team with? And if DGW 35 can be navigated by transfers surely wildcarding early is a better option?

Would love some discussion regarding this as most posts I've seen are waiting until GW34 to wildcard.

Set 75% of the team up purely for blanks, then transfer or bench the likes of Aguero and Sterling out until GW34.

Then use FT's with possible -4's to get a team out for GW35 and BB

It's GW35 that worries me most, but I think this option serves me best from 28-34 and as long as I keep the correct structure, shouldn't mean too much reconstruction for 35 and beyond.

isn’t it defeating the object of the early WC is you set the team up 75% for the blanks ?

Surely you can do that without using a WC ?

From my current lineup I'll only have Salah for BGW31. 5 FT's from now until 31 would only leave me with 6 players.

My thinking was to WC, get blank players in for the whole team, except Pogba Aguero & Sterling. Then I can transfer two of them out in GW31 for players that do play.

At the same time, I can beef up the rest of my side with players that have good fixtures... Leicester, Newcastle, West Ham - none of which I have right now so that brings benefits of more points before GW31 also.

I know it’s not ideal to “waste” transfers on GW31 starters but the 2 players I’m selling are on the bench for me mostly and I’m upgrading them to be more useful.

Good moves. I didn't realize Yedlin was creating chances. Maybe an assist + cs in his future.

        Don't think it's wasting the transfer's.
        Could be nice differential.
Rondon can become Barnes/Wilson/king too in the future ( if fails )

Doing very similar mate. Agree with you - getting garbage out and replacing with players with decent fixtures and playing in GW31 is sensible.

It’s a good way of building a team for GW31 and still keep your main big hitters.

These moves also put me in a position to be able to invest in Man City from next week.

Yedlin is the one Newcastle defender on my radar. He could be the one that comes in for Bednarek in my case.

I still just prefer Clyne for 31/3 but that’s simply based on home fixtures and the knowledge I won’t be going Boruc.

Whoever gets picked as Scout Picks Community Champion needs to think about what they want to achieve.

If all you want to do is beat the Scouts then just choose a team close to them with a few differentials. But if you want to win the £100 Amazon voucher then you need to beat the Scouts by 34 or more points. That means you need to go heavily differential and gamble (e.g. block defence).

This is my current team for gw27.

      Etheridge
      Lindleof, Bednarek, WB
      Salah, Pogba, Son, Jota, Puncheon
      Rashford, Aubameyang

Guita, Digne, Duffy, Aguero 1ft .5itb

I was planning on doing Digne to Lascelles/Pereira for this gw with my ft but if I decide not to use my FH in 31 I should be avoiding Newcastle right?

Well Newcastle do have a great run of fixtures.

I’m planning to get Rondon & Yedlin this week but they aren’t going to be stadrtimg every week for me.

I wouldn’t be playing every week either. I currently own only 3 bgw31 players though. Digne and Puncheon are two of them... so selling Digne for Yedlin/Lascelles seems strange.

Is there a chance Sarri will be on his way if Chelsea go out of the cup and fail in the final?

If so I could well be tempted into Hazard Higuain from 29 - possibly even at the cost of Kun. I can see goals in that Chelsea attack if it is set free.

On this scenario with a new man in one or more of Odoi, Barkley and RLC might also become pickable for those looking at Anderson and Maddison.

Surely by now Cheslea board should know it’s not the manager’s fault. It’s their players who are the problem.

Although I still think Chelsea will be great differentials from next week. Hazard loves a goal against Spurs.

Here is my team and plan for upcoming gameweeks, would apreciate some thoughts and comments:
      chips available: BB and FH.
      ryan - boruc
      doherty - pereira - lindelof - bennet - bednarek
      mane - son - eriksen - anderson - hayden
      aguero - rashford - jimenez

      transfer plan:
      27 save, 28 eriksen + son > sterling + hazard, 29 lindelof > taa, 30 aguero, jimenez, bennet > firminho, wilson, chilwell, 31 rashford > higuain/lacazette

this is based on man utd winning tonight, would change if otherwise, it would give me 11 starting players for gw31 and 6x double game players for gw32. I might also bench boost then with my bench being bourc(lei) - chilwell (BOU) - taa (TOT) - hayden (ars).
this way i would save my fh for second double gw.
do you think this is a solid plan to cover for the fact that i am out of wc, or should i just build my team for 32, free hit 31 and pray that i will have 11 starting for gw33? the difference is i do not think i would build my team for 32 much differently then this plan except maybe trying to include kolasinac and aubameyang, would really apreciate any opinions, ideas etc.

If you would lead a ML with +30 and expect the 4-5 chasers will take hits to get Auba in and Rich/Digné/Hazard etc. out for GW27, would you do the same, respectively are the following moves the right ones?

      Lloris, Button
      Luiz, Kola, Doherty, Wan-Bi, Bednarek
      Salah, Son, Pogba, Rich, Camarasa
      Firmino, Rashford, Jimenez
