How Chelsea vs Man United could affect FPL schedule

Fantasy Premier League managers are just a few hours away from finding out the complete line-up of fixtures in Blank Gameweek 31.

That round of matches takes place on the same weekend as the FA Cup quarter-finals, which will be drawn this evening.

Just one Blank Gameweek 31 match is yet to learn its fate, hinging on the result of tonight’s FA Cup meeting between Chelsea and Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are currently scheduled to travel to Everton then, but if they win tonight that match will be postponed and rearranged.

Those hoping for more Blanks, and therefore more fixtures in upcoming Double Gameweeks, should be backing Maurizio Sarri’s men in the cup.

That’s because opponents Manchester United have already had their Gameweek 31 fixture postponed by Manchester City winning their fifth-round tie at Newport County.

The two city rivals were due to meet at Old Trafford on the weekend of March 16, but will now face each other on a rearranged date, most likely in Gameweek 32.

A win for Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s side would mean that the number of Gameweek 31 Blanks, currently at five, and resulting Doubles, would remain the same.

The matches already postponed from Blank Gameweek 31 are:

Watford v Southampton
Brighton v Cardiff
Man United v Man City
Wolves v Arsenal
Tottenham v Crystal Palace

Furthermore, if both Wolves and Manchester United were to make it to the FA Cup semi-finals then the two of them would only cause one Gameweek 33 fixture to become a Blank.

The two sides are currently set to meet each other at Molineux on the weekend of April 6.

However, if Chelsea were to win tonight, and then progress from their quarter-final too, Wolves making it to the last four as well as them would postpone two matches.

That’s because Sarri’s men are set to host West Ham in Blank Gameweek 33, who have already been eliminated from the FA Cup.

A Chelsea FA Cup exit, and a presence in both Blank Gameweeks, would drastically change the landscape for the FPL ‘chip season’.

Having options such as Eden Hazard (£10.9m), Gonzalo Higuain (£9.5m), Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) or David Luiz (£5.9m) available for matches against Everton and West Ham would be a great help to Fantasy managers.

After all, there are very few widely-owned Fantasy options set to play in Gameweek 31 with 10 teams already absent from that weekend of action.

Confirmed Blank Gameweek 31:
West Ham v Huddersfield
Bournemouth v Newcastle
Burnley v Leicester
Fulham v Liverpool

However, Chelsea ending up involved in Blank Gameweek 31 would mean a missed opportunity for more Doubles, and that they would not have more than one Double Gameweek match this season.

The Blues currently have an outstanding game waiting to be rearranged, their Gameweek 27 hosting of Brighton, but need to beat Manchester United to add more to that list.

Hazard or Higuain could make potential Triple Captain options if Chelsea are able to make it through to subsequent rounds of the FA Cup.

For example, if Chelsea were to have their rearranged Gameweek 31 fixture in Gameweek 32, the would have a Double of Cardiff (away) and Everton (away) – appealing stuff.

Likewise, if Chelsea were to make it to the FA Cup semi-finals they could face Burnley (home) and West Ham (home) in a Double Gameweek 35.

The Blues may still have a Double in Gameweek 32 though even if they get eliminated, as their outstanding meeting with Brighton could be moved there if the Seagulls don’t already have a fixture rearranged there.

Actually, it's pretty unlikely as they could move one of Brighton's postponed fixtures to a GW outside of 32 & 35

It’s the players who blank that are the problem however.

I mean Man Utd and wolves most have 4 or 5 from them. Some have 6.

Then Man City are popular. another kick to the butthole.

I think we can start justifying getting the odd hit in before 31 as long as it gives you an extra player for that week. That’s a real plus as it’s fun for all the family.

We could do with Watford beating Palace imo

That means Newcastle who play in 31 will also play in 33.

It also means AWB plays 33.

Watford v Fulham is not a fixture many would want.

        GAMEWEEK 33

        Bournemouth v Burnley
        Chelsea v West Ham
        Everton v Arsenal
        Huddersfield v Leicester
        Southampton v Liverpool

        RISK OF BEING OFF
Man City v Cardiff (off when City progress past Swansea )
Spurs v Brighton (off only if Brighton beat Millwall)

One of following will be off, one will be on: just have to wait.
        - Watford^ v Fulham
        - Newcastle v Crystal Palace^

        DEFINITELY OFF
Wolves v Man Utd - OFF as one will be in semis (likely for GW35)

Definitely four teams blank and very likely 6 teams and good chance 8 teams blank in 33.

I think Spurs would like to host Brighton GW33 if Brighton go out. Don’t think Spurs season ticket holders would be chuffed... but wait.... where would spurs play that weekend if semi finals are at Wembley ! Will spurs be home in new stadium by April. Maybe spurs v Brighton goes to DGW35 and you might be right.

So that means a fair chance of a Chelsea DGW32 then you think?

OP says "expect rearranged games to potentially be announced by the weekend". This is wrong, isn't it? Typically they will wait till the FAC QFs are played, no? So during GW31?

Chelsea DGW32 looks a distinct possibility to me, yes.

Not sure about the timings of the announcements - if they do the same as last season it will be after GW31, but only 15/16 days between GW31 and midweek GW32 may cause problems - Man City have shown it can be done by them with the DGW25 rearrangement, but not sure all teams can turn around that fast with things like police/transport notice to take into consideration.

Can’t see many fixtures rearranged until after the QFs have been played ... TV schedule will drive it all, plus oddities like Chelsea/ Wembley issue ...expect and plan for a few twists that may occur

                • 9 Years

I think we will get most fixtures rearranged this week.

Don't think the Spurs thing is an issue. They could play Friday or Monday. Every other midweek is a CL week, bar GW30. Assuming Spurs beat Dortmund, we won't know if they make the semifinal before after GW34. I'm fairly sure they rather put the game on a Friday or a Monday.

Chelsea - Brighton looks likely to go to GW32 with Brighton - Cardiff moving elsewhere.

United - Wolves to GW32 and City - United to GW35 is definitely a possibility. Wolves - Arsenal to GW35 as mentioned, and GW32 open for City - Cardiff if/when City beat Swansea. All of those could be announced this week, bar City - Cardiff.. but we would know where that game goes if City win.

Can't see them waiting to rearrange all of the fixtures until after the FA cup quarterfinal due to the short turnaround this year. Every other year they have had 30+ days from the date they announce the new fixture until it's played, bar some exceptions. We might have some exceptions this year too, but I doubt they'll hold off with all of the fixtures.

I doubt the TV scheduling can be agreed this week because the companies will need to know who will blank in 33 to allocate the games to dates and evenings ... this is the main driver for the fixtures, not the logistics ... the money and advertising involved is too important

Same thing happened last season, so it will be interesting to see what happens this season ... either way I have all my chips and not too worried 🙂

They announce the April TV fixtures at around 22 February. I think we will get an announcement this week.

As mentioned there is a much much shorter turnaround this season.

I do realise I missed a point on Tottenham though. Could make sense to move it to 35 even if Brighton do go out.

Most of this don't matter for us with FH and WC left though, at least not until GW32.

The first thing we need to decide is when to use our Free Hit chip, since this will affect whether to build towards BGW31 or DGW 32.
                      Other decisions can wait.

They won’t know some of the fixtures for April until after 16 March FA Cup games, so not sure how they can announce them on 22 Feb?

I think some fixtures may be set early, as I originally alluded to, but not all. Some of the 31 blanks may go to 35 or other gameweeks which gives more time.

There are 2 weeks between GW31 & GW32 which, based on the time it took to announce the City DGW (a week ?), is enough time to organise fixtures imho, especially if they don’t go into GW32.

Regarding Spurs at home on the same weekend of FA Cup semis, I think it would be very difficult to play 2 games at Wembley in consecutive days (Mon or Fri) for ‘different competitions’ - it will need all the sponsors, tournament branding, stadium advertising etc changed over, corporate use changes, different caterers, staff and security ... all changed overnight ? policing for 3 days on the trot isn’t going to be easy either with overtime for the police ...

Any way, lets see how it plays out 🙂

Yip, it indicates moving fixtures after 31 and into 32 from any gameweek can be done in the time I suppose

Logic probably gives way to the TV scheduling and fixtures could be moved anywhere ... time to sit tight and take comfort in the FH & WC safely tucked away in our pockets 🙂

Feeling happy with the blank scenerio.

        GK Allison, Pat
DEF Trent, Perreria, Kola, Luiz, Rice
MID Salah, Fraser, Anderson, Son, Pogba
        FWD Auba, Rashford, Auba.

That's 8 for GW 31 (bench Kola and Auba) and 9 for GW 33(benching Rice as dodgy fixture)

        GW28 sell Son for Maddisons
        GW29 Carry
GW 30 Sell Jimmy for Wilson and either Pogba for Haz or Rashford for Hazard

        That's 11 for 31 and 33

        GW 32 Free hit
        GW 34 Wcard
        GW 35 Boost

80 points to catch and feeling a little confident

        Surely if you go :
        GW32 FH
        GW34 WC
        GW35 BB

Then that means your GW31 is also your GW33 team plus 1 free transfer. So is that the plan?

e.g. you need to have 3 Liverpool, 2 Chelsea, 2 West Ham, 2 Bournemouth, 2 Leicester and maybe Barnes....or similar

Wolves v Man U in GW33 is a definite blank, so that well could be moved to GW32 meaning the Manchester Derby would be 35, which I would suspect is Sky's preference.
