The Blank Gameweek picture after United’s victory and FA Cup draw

Manchester United’s victory over Chelsea in the fifth round of the FA Cup means that we finally have a complete picture for Blank Gameweek 31.

The five fixtures that will take place in that Gameweek are as follows:

Bournemouth v Newcastle United
Burnley v Leicester City
West Ham United v Huddersfield Town
Fulham v Liverpool
Everton v Chelsea

The meeting between the Toffees and Maurizio Sarri’s side is newly confirmed because of the Blues’ FA Cup exit and gives Fantasy bosses an extra two teams from which to draw their assets in Gameweek 31 (whether free-hitting or otherwise) – though both clubs are distinctly out of sorts at present.

The FA Cup quarter-final draw took place after full-time at Stamford Bridge and looks as follows:

Swansea v Manchester City
Watford v Crystal Palace
Wolves v Manchester United
Millwall v Brighton

That means we will get between two and four blanks in Gameweek 33 – one of which will definitely be Wolves’ match against Manchester United, as one of those clubs is guaranteed to progress to the FA Cup semi-finals on that same weekend.

In the worst-case scenario (or best-case, for those Fantasy managers hoping for as much carnage as possible), the following Gameweek 33 fixtures will have to be postponed to a later date:

Manchester City v Cardiff City
Newcastle United v Crystal Palace OR Watford v Fulham
Spurs v Brighton
Wolves v Manchester United

The Scout Notes for United’s 2-0 victory in west London will follow tomorrow, as will a look at potential chip strategies for the weeks ahead.

How's this team looking for blank gw?

    Lossl
    Robertson Doherty Lascelles Diop
    Salah Mane Pogba Son
    Rashford Jimenez

    Shaw on the bench

Would rather do Pickford to Boruc as Lossl has no blanks.

Please don't tell Ben Crellin, but I'm still reticent about the FH32 strategy as it necessitates: selling players who look likely to score well prior to GW31, and who have valued tied up in them (Patricio, Doherty, Son, Pogba, Rashford, Jimenez etc.); keeping players who look likely to score poorly (Digne, Richarlison etc.); transferring in players who don't look likely to score well (Yedlin, Rondon etc.); not being able to transfer in players who look likely to score well (Duffy, Gross, Sterling, Aubameyang, Lacazette, Aguero).

Either way, I doubt any particular strategy represents as big an advantage as we're all pretending.

Just take loads of hits in gw31. That's my plan. That way you don't have to carry the dross till then, just cos they play in a BGW.

hits before GW 31. -8 wich will be -4. If my team is good before that I might save transfer and with 4 transfers and 3 Liverpool + Fabianski and Digne I am good to go. Boom

Agreed. Just 2 hits and 2 FT's can switch out 4 which is loads considering most will have surely 5+ players before then.

I'm reluctant to sell Duffy but 5 games say Leicester defender vs 3 games in next 5 game weeks is hard to go past. Only issue is HUD in 29 so tempting.

      why?

you can do 2FT for 31 if you plan well
      or 3 transfers for -4

so you can switch up 2/3 players at the last moment to cover the blank. It's not like you have to bring in all those players now

you can also probably afford to field 10 in 31 as likely to be a low scoring week - the highest points coming from Liverpool match.

You get less punished when selling players scoring 0.
      5 of those 6 players don't play in 33.
I might sell 2 of those poor players.
Not that much interest in Newcastle tbh.
Rather take hits and have a go at getting the big scorers to cover the later hit to get a decent GW31 team.

Anyone else considering wild card 32 and free hit 33? Means you can get 32 right bit of time to tweet for 35 and also have access to a slightly bigger pool of blank players in 33 compared to 31

Will consider it if Arsenal pick up form and Spurs have a fixture in 33 (with Kane, etc. back). Can decide in 32 whether to WC or use FH accordingly.

      yes, probably

get 9 players using FTs in 31

I will probably have Son, Pogba and Jimenez on bench for GW 31 and 33.
There is a chance that Brighton gets knocked out.
Selling Son seems too much as he is one of the best fpl player right now. Maybe ahead of GW 31 but not now.
Also its not like Chelsea is in form and other blank free players like Bournemouth, Leicester and Burnley aren't expensive. So you don't need to sell son.

No QF is easy (except for Man City away to Swansea)

If Brighton mke semi finals it will be because they earned it and not because it was easy.

I can see this original post on the Millwall dressing room wall soon.

“They say Brighton have an easy cup opponent: what you gonna do about this lads “

Well I'm currently ranked 30,000 so first is out of reach...

For 1st it is easy to keep track of the 50 people under them and make moves based on that. For me there's no point keeping track of the 50 people around me since they will change week to week.

Never seen someone make so little sense on this site tbh.

So it's important to think about risk (ownership stats, variance etc.) if you're "going for 1st", but not if you're ranked at 30k? For what reason?

                  1. JasonG123
                    • 10 Years
                    5 years, 1 month ago

It's never important to think about ownership stats or variance, only expected value is important.

It is important to pick players to chase or to hold rank if you care about a mini-league. If you're in the top 50, then the top 50 effectively becomes 'like' a little mini-league. Since I don't care about my mini-leagues, it is not optimal for me to pick players based on whether I'm chasing etc.

                  2. JasonG123
                    • 10 Years

Just a note: picking players 'to chase' versus caring about ownership/variance are two different things. The latter has not been mentioned in this thread until you brought it up.

I conflated the two because I can't think of a way to 'chase' that wouldn't involve those things! I disagree that ownership is never important, but I suppose it does depend on what your goals are

In this context, we were speaking about 'chasing' in the context of individual mini-leagues. Ownership relates to the entire player base, not an individual mini-league. Obviously, if you have a goal of top 1k and are 'chasing' this goal, then you will need to consider ownership as you have stated (so I agree with you in this sense).

It's more that my philosophy on the game is that considering ownership, variance and the strategies of other players is not optimal in FPL, you should only be considering expected value when making decisions.

This is different to the stock market where variance is important since you're playing with real money and thus your personal value of your first $5,000 may be different to your personal value of the next $5,000. In FPL, all points are the same as you should only be considering expected value, not variance.

So as a starting point the last thing I would want to do is been seen as someone with 2 teams.
My boy is 7 now and watching lots of perms games and has asked me about setting up his own team on FPL. What age do you think is good to let a kid have their own team or do the rules need them to be 18. Also it would get grey with how much advice you give them I suppose. Any thoughts? - thanks.

Don’t think there is an age restriction on the decision maker for the team (i.e. your 7 year old)
You can register his team and be a passive advisor for his team.
And take it on the chin if he beats your score. It’s only a game for fun after all.

I’d heard initially that TV games are being announced this weekend but it’s probable that DGWs will be announced mid March (after 16-17 March QFs which is GW31)

DGW 32 is touted for 2-3 April and DGW35 for 23-24 April.
More TV games will be announced in mid to late March too I hear.

But .... TV games are penned until 1st April’s Monday night football Arsenal v. Newcastle so surely tv want to fix April games soon. It’s a tough one. Might now know rearrangement plans but I guess more into will follow this week at least (i.e. more clues at least)

A quick opinion on the below team. Would you wing it with 6 in the MUNvLIV game and save FT?

    Alisson
    Robertson / Trippier / Shaw / Doherty
    Son / Mane / Pogba / Eriksen
    Rashford / Rondon
    (Speroni, AWB, Sterling, Quaner)
    2.3itb

    A. Play Shaw, save FT
    B. Plaw AWB, bench Shaw, save FT
    C. Sell Shaw for Maguire/Pereira using FT

(Saving FT would allow getting Kun in for free next week, using FT I will need to take a hit next week)
    Cheers

I am leaning towards this as I think I want rid of Shaw anyway and feel Kun is well worth the hit next week! Cheers

Think I'm going to abandon the Newcastle defender plan since I can get 11 out anyway

Is it silly not to buy a chelsea attacking player for gw31? (Say haz or Higuain)
Chelsea's form is just bad. But Everton also..

def punty considering their form but with no blanks and decent fixtures could still be a very good move, particularly if you're not using FH in 31 or 33!

GW31 is a month away. Everton and Chelsea can’t get much worse so the only way is up for both. I hope they both inprove and it’s a great game on St Paddy’s day. Coleman hat trick.

I will definitely get Higuain for Auba/Kun in my team.
It will allow upgrades in other areas too

    6 players in game MUN-LIV 🙁
Salah, Firm, Robbo, Pogba, Rash, Shaw...Shaw to Pereira no-brainer?

I’m thinking same. I have 5 same plus Trent instead of Andy.

Had planned to bin Digne for Pereira but it’s either Digne or Shaw. Still might bin Digne now the Shaw to Bournemouth def for GW30

    A) Holebas -> Pereira
    B) Richarlison -> Maddison
    C) Richarlison -> Anderson
