Liverpool facing knife-edge Bayern rematch in between Gameweeks 30 and 31

Liverpool and Bayern Munich played out a goalless draw in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday night.

The second leg of their knockout stage match will take place on Wednesday 13 March, directly in between Liverpool’s Gameweek 30 and 31 fixtures against Burnley and Fulham respectively.

Whether Jurgen Klopp would countenance any squad rotation either before or after the trip to Germany is open to debate, given that the Premier League title race will feasibly be as neck-and-neck in mid-March as it is now.

The Gameweek 30 encounter with Sean Dyche’s side at Anfield would arguably be most at risk of minor tinkering from Klopp, perhaps in the form of “managed minutes” rather than wholesale rotation.

The fact that an international break follows after Gameweek 31, though, at least affords the likes of Mohamed Salahwho won’t be involved in Egypt’s two matches in March – the opportunity of a welcome breather.

Our Scout Notes article below focuses on last night’s match itself.

Liverpool 0-0 Bayern Munich

Liverpool delivered a performance full of endeavour and plenty of respect for the opposition on Tuesday evening – but ultimately a lack of creativity and inability to break down a resolute Bayern side sullied their display against Niko Kovac’s Bavarian giants.

A goalless draw is far from a terrible result, of course – depriving Bayern of an away goal could prove crucial and the reigning Bundesliga champions will likely not be as defensive-minded on home soil in three weeks’ time, potentially affording the Reds more space to exploit on the break.

Kovac’s side were especially stubborn after the interval, with the hosts not registering a single shot in the first 35 minutes of the second half.

A late Sadio Mane (£9.6m) header – one of just two shots on target that Liverpool mustered all night – was the closest the Reds came after half-time, though there were some clearer chances for Klopp’s side and Mane himself before the interval.

The Senegalese midfielder, who has scored in each of the last four Gameweeks in the Premier League, missed the best of Liverpool’s opportunities when screwing a shot wide on the turn from ten yards out and then sending an overhead kick high into the Anfield Road Stand from the edge of Manuel Neuer’s six-yard box.

Mane also fired a shot off-target from the edge of the Bayern area as the Reds enjoyed their best spell of the match, though this was one game in which the premium FPL midfielder’s finishing touch deserted him.

Although lacking a clinical streak on Tuesday night, the fact that Mane had more attempts on goal than Mohamed Salah (£13.6m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.3m) combined is nevertheless an encouraging sign for those who pay heed to underlying attacking statistics – further information on that can be found in this article that we published earlier today.

Firmino actually had a decent match despite his lack of goalscoring opportunities in the centre-forward role, rising from his sick bed (the Brazilian had been a minor doubt for this match due to a virus) to play the first 76 minutes of this encounter and looking more like the excellent link-up player he can be when on song – something he hasn’t been in recent weeks.

Salah, back on the right flank, had two presentable chances in the first half but couldn’t get enough purchase on a superb Jordan Henderson (£5.3m) through-ball and then sent a header wide of Neuer’s left-hand post from a Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.2m) cross.

While the Egyptian posed a threat in the first half, he was generally comfortably dealt with by the Bayern backline and his goalscoring record against the “bigger” sides in 2018/19 might be of concern going into the Gameweek 27 meeting with Manchester United: Salah has one goal in five Champions League matches against PSG, Napoli and Bayern, and one goal in seven Premier League fixtures against fellow “big six” clubs.

Klopp reflected on his side’s attacking efforts:

There was a lot of respect involved in the game and that made life uncomfortable.

But in the first half we still had chances; if Sadio hits the ball a bit better, he strikes twice with a bicycle kick, which is obviously pretty rare. How it always is, a goal would have changed the game. It was like it was. The first half was still absolutely OK, we created. In the second half, nobody created anymore.

Our problem tonight was, on one hand, the quality of the opponent of course, but on the other hand, our last pass was not our friend. We had ten or 12 situations where everything was prepared, everything was on a plate, and then we played a very average last pass or gave it away.

It’s 0-0, the best draw you can get. It will be a tough one again to play at Bayern. If we win 1-0 tonight, what would have changed really? So it’s not perfect but good enough to work with.

Alexander-Arnold made his first start since returning from a knee injury and was prominent at set-piece situations especially, creating more chances than any other player on show.

The England full-back and Andrew Robertson (£6.8m) were curbed somewhat in open play by Bayern’s rigid set-up, however, while Robertson had his hands full with Serge Gnabry at the other end of the pitch.

With Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) suspended and Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez (both £4.9m) sidelined through injury, the makeshift centre-back pairing of Joel Matip (£4.9m) and Fabinho (£5.5m) performed admirably – save for a couple of jittery moments involving Alisson (£6.0m) in the first half – and didn’t allow their visitors a single shot on target. Robert Lewandowski, indeed, had the fewest touches of any player who started the match.

Matip was a (wasteful) threat at the other end and had the joint-highest number of attempts on goal in this contest, the best of his opportunities coming from a Firmino cross just before half-time.

Matip will likely continue alongside van Dijk at Old Trafford on Sunday, as Lovren seems unlikely to recover in time for Gameweek 27.

Klopp said:

It was not mind games but Dejan had no chance for the game today actually, I don’t think he even has a chance for the next game. He will take his time.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Fabinho, Robertson; Wijnaldum, Henderson, Keita (Milner 76′); Salah, Firmino (Origi 76′), Mane.

For GW28 and 29, would you rather have:

    2. Son (chelsea and ARSENAL)

Has anyone that's watched West Ham lately got an opinion on Antonio v Felipe Anderson?

Looking at the members stats, doesn't look like there's much in it?

I'd say Anderson based on Fulham's especially poor right hand side and free-kicks, but not much in it at all.

      Anderson by a mile.
Antonio has been utilised further upfront recently but can easily (and regularly does) slot in at RWB against some of the bigger sides. Once Arnies back fit & firing which could be this Gameweek I wouldn’t expect as much output from Antonio. Anderson is intergeal to most attacks & on set pieces.

    Which Newcastle defender?

    A) Yedlin (4.5)
    B) Lascelles (4.6)

The 0.1 difference could be very handy when bringing in Aguero next GW

  7. Can you afford to buy back the players you sell?
    OldBenKenobi

Personally I think the hardest thing about nagivating the blanks and doubles is the potential value you will lose but selling and buying back players like Jimenez, Pogba etc etc and having sub par value to get them back for DGWs

    1. HamezMace
      • 9 Years

      Exactly.
Think some people don't realise when looking at the transfers page, seeing Pogba at SV 8.3m, and not realising when you want him back two weeks later you need to find half a million from somewhere else.

Yeah, Jiminez is a tough sell in GW30. Think I'm likely to sell Son to afford Hazard, but may keep and bench Pogba and Rashford.

      1. HamezMace
        • 9 Years
        5 years, 2 months ago

I'm also benching Rashford through GW31 blank, and if I had Pogba I would bench him too, rather than sell him.
Although, we do know United and Wolves are guaranteed to blank in 33 too, and people FH'ing32 might need to get rid of them +Jiminez/Doherty (two more players with high TV) to get 11 players out in both weeks.

Yeah, it's nasty. We can expect some of these plays to drop in value around the blanks but still a factor before selling, for sure.

I can see every man and his dog doing Jiminez > Wilson or King for GW30.

Unless Benitez has a lobotomy, Newcastle aren't going to change their 5-4-1 formation anytime soon. If he's feeling frivolous, he might get fancy and go 4-4-1-1.

Nothing wrong with Fraser or Brooks. I can see many doubling up with 31 and 33 in mind.

Luckily, although that feels like the wrong word to use, I still have Wilson (been putting out other fires in my team since he got injured).
Jiminez to Arnie for me, depending on whether or not his place looks secure over the next few weeks.

In a way, yes, I can get 10 players out in GW31/33 with no hits, injuries/suspensions/rotation permitting of course.

Honestly the hardest decision for me is losing Sterling prior to GW29, in order to bring Hazard in.
Hazard has Fulham and Wolves in 29/30, which on paper looks okay, but in real life, I just don't trust him.

True. Hazard is a no brainer given Chelsea don't blank in 31 and 33, and the lack of quality alternatives. We're almost pushed into bringing in Chelsea players.

I'm going to try and have both until GW31 by selling Son for Hazard, then make a decision on Sterling.

                  1. HamezMace

                    5 years, 2 months ago

Exactly, he is the most obvious Chelsea asset.
If I could afford to do Son to Hazard instead, and keep Sterling that would be much easier, but I think I'd be short.
Going without City attack in 28-30 is risky on current form.

We've seen with the Aguero price rise, lots of casual players not aware of future blanks/planning, and as you say, those of us who are planning will be using FH.

      Quite

I’m keeping Jimi almost certainly because I want him for quite a nice run in and I got him st 5.6.

I’ll lose Kun before him as I got him at 11.2 - a much smaller loss and I may go Kane anyway.

Part of the way I look at it is that I can okay Jimi as a 5.6 striker if I don’t sell him - that’s a huge advantage over 90% if players I guess. Sell him and I’ve lost that edge.

Do you pkay Doherty every week or is he an irregular?

I downgraded him to Jonny a bit back just because he played only off and on. I didn’t see the point of clinging to the value if he wasn’t on the pitch most weeks.

Well, I just made a list of my players SV and their current price. Then looked to see which had the biggest gaps. Most are 0.2, but there are a couple of 0.4's (Doherty, Pogba, Robbo).

I'm then going to base my 31/33 team around Doh and Pog being benched. Son is a tricky one as I think his value will continue to rise in the next few GWs so he may also need to stay.

I’m not going to lose Pogba, Son or Jimenez.

Already decided I’ll keep and bench them for the blanks.

Like the OP said, getting them back is a big costs headache and BGW31 has some crappy fixtures that really don’t feel like they’re worth losing those 3 for.

Probably only playing 9 at the most in BGW31 but am OK with that.

Actually I have 6 players who have matches in GW31 and my current squad is:

    Fabianski*
    Robertson*-Pereira*-Doherty (TAA*-AWB)
    Salah*-Son (VC)-Pogba-Anderson* (Hojbjerg)
    Aubameyang (C)-Rashford-Jimenez

Which DGW31 fixtures are actually worth targeting?? Are we confusing game theory with reality? 🙂

Its about targetting groups of fixtures.
Leicester are good targets from now on.
Week 29 lose Arsenal, get in Chelsea & West Ham.
Week 30 lose United and Wolves, get in Bournemouth.

You're looking at it from a FH32 perspective. Chelsea and West Ham have favourable DGW32 fixtures AND play in 31 and 33. Arsenal have a double and even play in 33.

You can jump on Leicester and Bournemouth's good fixtures without following one particular DGW strategy.

We know what the best possible outcome is, and that is for all of GW31 fixtures to move to GW32. Even then, it's slim pickings.

Possibly leaning more towards the following:

    1) Use FTs to manage BGW31 (but NOT going all in on it)
    2) WC DGW32
    3) FH BGW33 then revert back ready for the next DGW35

    Pros:
means keeping players with lots of value tied up in them and who have DGWs (stronger DGW players/team?)

    Cons:
possibly sub par score during BGW31
means having pretty much the same team for both DGWs

Players who blank in GW 31 will blank again in GW 33. Most of the good ones at least. So why FH 33? You will have decent for 33 as you already preparing for 31.

      1. OldBenKenobi
        • 7 Years
        5 years, 2 months ago

like i said above i feeling im jeopardizing my potential DGW teams by losing value in players trying to manage both blanks.
so maybe its better to take the first blank on the chin and using FH on the second one and have the WC manage both DGWs.
can even BB or TC that second DGW?

If Spurs play 33 then I’m definitely thinking about the WC FH combo. I could also hold fire on Chelsea to see if they are worthwhile by 32 rather than commit in 29/30

Talk me out of this strategy......

    1) Use FTs to manage BGW31 but NOT go all in on it (ultimately taking it on the chin)
    2) Use WC in DGW32 (with DGW35 also in mind)
    3) FH BGW33 then revert back ready for the next DGW35
    4) Use BB/TC DGW35

    Pros:
means keeping more players who have DGWs and with lots of value tied up in them (stronger DGW players/team?)
opens up being able to use BB or TC for DGW 35

    Cons:
possibly sub par score during BGW31 (would really need to nail captaincy that week)
means having pretty much the same team for both DGWs (risky as a lot can change)

One big variable is the Millwall Brighton match.

If Brighton lose those extra Spurs players look tasty in 33.

The other big variable is post Sarri Chelsea. They could fire. We won’t know that by 29/30 but should by 33.

If those two fall into phase this is probably where I’m going. If they don’t - dunno. Arguably you could just bring in Arsenal Chelsea and Spurs on the WC and FH 31 - but we may not have the info by then

I really hope the top 3k of managers are asking the same questions as a lot of people on here about bringing in rubbish players. It is not just useless low-ranked managers who are asking questions such as....

"Should I bring Maddison or Anderson for Son?"

"Which Leicester defender should I get?"

If the top 3k are asking the same then I will be sailing past a lot of teams.
