The Scout Squad for FPL Blank Gameweek 27

There’s a smaller pool of players for our Scout Squad panel to choose from this week as Chelsea, Manchester City, Everton and Brighton are without a league fixture in Gameweek 27 due to the clash with the EFL Cup final.

The long-list of Fantasy assets below will be subsequently considered for our regular Scout Picks feature, which will be published on Friday before the next round of Premier League matches.

The 72 nominations listed will be narrowed down to a squad of 14 (with the starting XI not exceeding a total cost of £83.5m) ahead of the earlier-than-usual Gameweek 27 deadline of 18:45 GMT on Friday.

Az, Peter, Paul and Neale (in for the unavailable Joe) expand on their notable selections and omissions in the article below.

My five-man midfield is stocked full of pretty obvious names for the slightly reduced Gameweek 27.

Instead, I’ve looked to the forwards in my usual quest for differentials, with Josh King and Marko Arnautovic prominent names.

Crucially, they not only play at home to porous defences this weekend, but the pair also offer Fantasy managers a fixture in both Gameweeks 31 and 33.

Grabbing them now – depending on your plan for FPL chips – could help get ahead of the curve.

King has 24 points in his last two at the Vitality and hosts a Wolves defence with one clean sheet in their last ten road trips.

Digging into the statistics, the Norwegian has tended to find top form in the second half of the season.

King scored a combined five goals between Gameweek 1-19 over the last two domestic campaigns. Yet over Gameweek 20-38 during that period, he found the net on 19 occasions.

Arnautovic has been a huge source of frustration in recent weeks, with injuries and a possible January transfer move ensuring his ownership – similar to King – sits under 7% in FPL.

When on the pitch, the Austrian has been involved in 53% of West Ham’s goals, compared with the 38% of Felipe Anderson.

A visit from Fulham – who have conceded more goals on the road (32) than any other side – seems the ideal opportunity for Arnautovic to get back on the scoresheet.

A reduced set of fixtures reduces the pool of available players for us to choose from. There’s also a really tough fixture to call, in Manchester United v Liverpool, and potentially two easier ones in Newcastle v Huddersfield and Arsenal v Southampton.

I fancy Newcastle to grind out a 1-0 win at St. James’ Park, hence the double-up on their goalkeeper and defender and a cheeky punt on record signing Miguel Almiron, who impressed against Wolves.

I think clean sheets are going to be hard to come by this week (bar Newcastle) so I’ve filled my defence up with attacking players. An injury doubt for Matt Doherty means Jonny makes my shortlist and I fancy Kieran Trippier on set pieces against an improved, but still leaky, Burnley defence.

Sead Kolasinac looks a certainty for the Scout Picks this week: he is creating more chances than any other Arsenal player and while his defending is, shall we say, questionable, his attacks down the left are vital to Arsenal at the moment.

I’ve also gone for Ben Chilwell over the more popular Ricardo Pereira. He doesn’t score very often but looks good for assist potential and bonus if Leicester can keep a clean sheet.

Son Heung-min‘s my captain this week, as he cannot stop scoring. I don’t need to defend the selections of Mohamed Salah and Paul Pogba either – who knows what’s going to happen in this game – but both could profit as these two titans clash.

Up front, I’ve gone for the Arsenal striker double-up. Alexandre Lacazette ahead of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang might raise a few eyebrows but with pretty much guaranteed gametime and as a player who does well when deployed centrally with Aubameyang out wide, he’s my preferred pick.

It was a toss-up between a Felipe Anderson/Salomon Rondon double-up but instead, I’ve gone for an Almiron/Marko Arnautovic combination, which is a bit riskier but I think has a higher ceiling.

Raul Jimenez and Troy Deeney make up my final two picks. Jimenez blanked (of course) as soon as I bought him and Deeney is a pretty uninspiring choice but plays Cardiff, who are always susceptible to a few goals against them despite looking quite impressive at home recently.

Neale said…

Slim pickings this week and I suspect there’ll be a lot of overlap among the Scout Squad selection, given the dearth of attractive options available and the fact that Manchester United face Liverpool on Sunday.

That meeting of fourth versus second at Old Trafford is enough for me to overlook Mohamed Salah, who has scored one goal in seven league matches against the “big six” this season (a penalty against Arsenal).

Felipe Anderson gets high priority for me, despite having only registered one attacking return in the last seven Gameweeks. The underlying statistics show that Fulham are particularly susceptible to conceding chances down their right flank of late and the Cottagers are the only Premier League club without a clean sheet in 2019, having conceded two or more goals in each of their last six league matches.

Only five clubs have shipped fewer goals than Newcastle United this season, so I’m backing Rafael Benitez’s dogged outfit to shut out a Huddersfield Town side that have scored on just two occasions in the last seven Gameweeks. The Terriers are particularly weak down their left flank at the moment (only Watford have conceded more chances from that zone of the pitch in the last six Gameweeks) so I’ve plumped for wing-back DeAndre Yedlin, who has created eight chances in his last six appearances.

Though they’ve improved drastically in recent weeks, Burnley are also susceptible down their left flank and I think Kieran Trippier is long overdue an attacking return based on his rate of chances created over the last six Gameweeks and indeed the season.

The Hornets’ aerial weakness and fallibility at set plays prompt my selection of Sol Bamba, meanwhile. Cardiff have kept seven clean sheets against non-“big six” sides this season, while Watford have only found the back of the net twice in the last four Gameweeks.

Suffering a wretched sequence of results on the road, Bournemouth are a different prospect when back on the south coast: the Cherries have recorded three clean sheets in their last four home matches. That’s enough for me to keep the Wolves assets at a minimum, with the best-value striker in FPL – Raul Jimenez – making the cut mostly due to a lack of convincing options elsewhere.

By overlooking Salah I’ve given us the option of doubling up on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette. I’m not expecting a goal bonanza at the Emirates like some are but it would be remiss to overlook the Arsenal pair and they are arguably the best two striking options in isolation this week: Aubameyang averages 9.5 points per game in his last six home matches, while Sergio Aguero is the only FPL forward to have scored more goals than Lacazette in 2019.

With a reduced fixture list this week and some fairly damp squibs in amongst those matches that do go ahead, there’s a fair few bets being hedged in terms of my squad selection this week. Also, at the time of writing, I was unable to access Fantasy Football Scout’s statistics properly, so apologies to those of you who appreciate more in-depth number-crunching.

On paper, the fixtures at the London Stadium, St. James’ Park and the Emirates look like home bankers and eight of my selections hail from the Hammers, the Magpies and the Gunners.

My double-up on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette has paid dividends previously and I’m also willing to overlook Sead Kolasinac’s last-minute, heart-breaking howler against Huddersfield and instead find promise in his return of four assists in the last nine matches.

I’m not thrilled to find Salomon Rondon as my third striker but his selection is in keeping with the predatory tactic of targeting the hapless Terriers. In contrast, I’m very confident in Martin Dubravka and Fabian Schar to keep out a Huddersfield attack with just one goal in its last five away fixtures.

Another budget-friendly defensive double-up comes at the Cardiff Stadium, where Cardiff have shut out the aforementioned Huddersfield and also Bournemouth in their last two home games. I suspect that Watford may carry a bigger threat when they roll up in Wales on Friday night but Neil Etheridge and Sol Bamba both provide excellent value. I also fancied the Ivory Coast man to add to his goal tally even before his strike against Southampton and he is riding surprisingly high in the list of defenders for bonus, so has the potential to gain points from various sources.

I can’t help but feel that the stage is set for goals at Vitality Stadium as Bournemouth entertain Wolves. Raul Jimenez and Josh King each have three goals and one assist in their last four matches and could profit on Saturday. In truth, for all the attacking midfielders on show from both teams, the Wolves creators probably have the better form, but I’ve gone back to an old favourite, Ryan Fraser, to give a bit of balance, with Matt Doherty also sneaking in.

The Community Champion

The Community Champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2018/19 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

This week’s contender will be announced in the Scout Picks on Friday.

Last weekend, Pep Pig lost to our Scout Picks 48-58 with a team of Ryan (0), Duffy (7), Kolasinac (2), Koscielny (3), Martial (12), De Bruyne (3), Son (6), Salah (8), Aubameyang (0), Firmino (5), Murray (2).

fclackless’s Gameweek 10 victory over the Scout Squad crew by a score of 77-44 remains the deficit to beat.

  2. An FH31 strategy based on assumed fixtures for DGW32 & BGW33

Here's an update to the "simplistic, yet confusing-as-hell" guide to the FH31 strategy (https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/19893332). I expect this strategy is a total dead parrot for the majority, even those who planned to run with as recently as last week. This is with thanks to the FA Cup Quarter Finals draw (particulary the Wolves vs United fixture which guarantees both teams blank in GW33). Nonetheless, some of you may roll the dice regardless, given your current teams and preferred targets.

So, to help you plan or make up your minds, here are the main categories of players to target (or not) to help make the strategy "work" as optimally as possible, with the appropriate PL teams from which to buy players from, roughly ranked according to priority over the next couple of gameweeks (first in terms of maximising no. of fixtures).

--- The brackets ( | ): fixtures for GW32 and GW33 (assuming that GW27 & 31 fixtures are rescheduled for GW32 *"ASSUMING" = IT IS AN ASSUMPTON ONLY*).

    _______________________________

What are the categories, and how many players do you want from each?

    1) Starting XI players: I'm writing this bit last, as I had kept personal hope for the strategy alive as long as possible before coming back to this category to say: You must fill your teams with Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton players.

With Spurs and Manchester City more likely to blank in GW33 than not, you may with to avoid players from these teams rather than waste transfers where you could be bringing in players with an extra fixture secured or at least more likely. In fact you may want to reserve the sale of an expensive City of Spurs asset with your free transfer in GW32, or even plan a hit or two to sell these assets that week, assuming they have a blank fixture (selling City assest prior to this may be a mistake given their excellent fixtures).

Therefore, in order to optimise number of fixtures, you may have to actually sacrifice optimisation of points potential by recruiting more starting XI players from Category 2 than you might normally do (SPOILER: this means Southampton).

    2) Players benchable prior to GW32: These players are hidden weapons which you can bring out especially for the DGW in GW32. Arsenal is listed again here entirely because Kolasinac. You may have as many of these players as you like, fulfilling roles on your bench or even in your starting XI in the lead up to the blanks and doubles. The first issue here, however, is that Southampton is the new introduction to the priority, desirable teams, who are certain to feature in the GW33 PL fixture list. And if being Southampton wasn't bad enough, they play Liverpool in the one week in which you would be certain to utilise their players in your starting XI. This stark fact alone may be enough to bury any deep seated desires you may have had to play your free hit chip in GW31.

*The second issue is that, since up to 3 of these teams will blank in GW33, you must be careful to leave space for players who definitely have a GW33 fixture. With this in mind, it may even be wiley to employ (at least) one player from both Watford and Palace, as one of those teams will blank in GW33 while the other will not. Since this information will not be known until their FA Cup Quarter Final in GW31, this plan would at least give you the security of knowing that one GW33 bench slot is taken (nothing is "up in the air"), while the other player will definitely play, leaving 2 more bench slots for Category 3 players.

    3) Players benchable in GW32 (and prior): Personally, I have avoided expensive players from this category (e.g. Liverpool attackers) for the last month with this atrophying strategy in mind. This is, in part, because I would prefer to save the more expensive slots for attackers with a possible DGW in GW32, while being able to bench good players (e.g. Liverpool defenders) without wasting much money. However, it may now be an impossible luxury to bench players from this category in GW33.

Ideally, you would have a maximum of 3 players from this category (preferably fewer, as this you allow you to start bringing in players from categories 1 & 2 who can take a bench slot in the unfortunate event that their fixtures are postponed). These players would ideally be benchable in GW33 (i.e. relatively cheap). However, more than 3 is perfectly doable, but bear in mind that, for every player from this category in your GW33 starting XI, managers who are playing the Free Hit chip will get an extra fixture.

    4) Benchable in GW33: Similar to the preceding category, teams here have 2 fixtures in 2 gameweeks. However, a DGW increases the chance of rotation and fatigue, which makes Category 3 players more desirable. Category 4 players are more like the "Avoid for now" category, since they will hinder flexibility, as you really need players with fixtures in GW33. You will have players on the bench anyway, and I would wager that you will have no space for any more.

However, this category is distinct from Category 5 because you may wish to keep a Wolves or United player for DGW32 and sell for the following week (or perhaps field fewer than 11 players). Ideally, you wouldn't own any players from this group, but selling them might not be the best choice either.

    5) Avoid for now: Only one of these teams will blank in GW33, but we won't know which until the FA Cup Quarter Final between Watford and Palace during GW31. Therefore, it is not worth investing in players from these teams while there are teams with at least 2 fixtures already confirmed in the other categories. That is unless you have a particularly strong and undeniably legitimate faith in Salomón Rondón in the lead up to the blanks and doubles.
    _______________________________

One final note is that this is a guide only. You must always consider whether a combination of players with more fixtures will actually outscore another combination with fewer fixtures. That much may be obvious, but it can be overlooked during this period thanks to overly enthusiastic chip stategy posts such as this one.

For discussion on the reschedulaling of blank gameweeks, see the following thread: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/19896377

tl;dr - If you want to use the FH chip in GW31, fill your team with players from Category 1, 2 and 3 who have definitely fixtures in GW33, then Category 1 and 2 with players without a definite GW33, then with Category 4, then 5, then delete team.

tl;dr's tl;dr - If you are unsure what to do and can't be arsed to do reading with your own eyes, just keep scrolling until you find the answer in gif form.

A big enough downside to be a killer of it in fact for me (unless we get fixture announcements in the next couple of days of course) - though if you are on a kamikaze mission and chasing someone way ahead of you which is your sole aim and need to try something, it is a way of trying something different.

Nice work. Shame the FA Cup 5th round went the way it did.

I have only 2.5 players with a game in GW31 (one of them is Digne) and I still think preparing for GW31 and 33, with the flexibility of FH in 32 is the best approach.

I looked at gwks 31,32,33 and 35 only as a block of 4 fixtures and it made it much simpler to me.

I was initially gutted about Wolves drawn against Man U as I have 5 players from those 2 teams.
Like you Twisty I currently have 3 players for gw31 but already had 11 for gw32.
I then looked at the popular option FH32 WC34 but it's not optimal for the players I've already got.

assuming you'd BB in 32 or 35 I looked at the total matches I would have players in.
FH 32 and WC 35 strategy gets me 70 players with 1 hit
        that's 8 in 31, 22 in 32, 10 in 33 and 30 in 35.

I compared this to WC29,FH31,BB32 gets me 68 players no hits.
        11 in 31,29 in 32, 6 in 33, 22 in 35.

I prefer the look of the second strategy. It means I can keep my in form players Pogba,Rashford,Aguero,Son instead of using free transfers to get players with bad form such as Maddison,Anderson, or injury prone ones like Arnie/Fraser/King or Wilson if he's back before 31.

2 seasons ago I made the mistake of getting in the likes of Stanislas and Evans or one of the West Brom defenders with free transfers specifically for a blank gameweek and true to form they got injured the week before I needed them,
I'm not going down that route again.

Because of the way the Blanks and Doubles land and depending on what players you've currently got I don't think there is a chip strategy that suits everyone, this season I think it's very team specific.

The good thing is it should break the template up and I'd like to know if any of the Mods plan to run a gw31 to 35 only league to see how the strategies compare.

Cheers guys. I figured it was a bit late to push for an article, so posted as a comment in the hopes more people would be able to see it in time to make plans for Friday. Plus I would have spent even longer editing it, and I'd spent too long on it already, especially since it's a useless topic to most people 😀 Maybe next time.

And after further consideration (above), it's really only Arsenal players you need to prioritise. FPL should to remove the 3-player-per-team restriction to keep this strategy alive!

Jarvish's predictions for the new dates of the rearranged fixtures are somewhat different from yours.

      https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2019/02/21/leicesters-fixtures-and-tielemans-arrival-boost-the-appeal-of-maddison/?hc_page=6&hc_sort_by=comment_date#hc_comment_19903539

I suspect that his predictions (which are allegedly based on sensible reasoning) might turn out to be more correct than yours (which are based on the simple assumption that matches postponed from GW27 and GW31 will be rescheduled for DGW32 and that matches from GW33 will be moved to GW35).

I believe that would then look like this:

        1) Starting XI players:

Chelsea (BHA car | WHU) ...312
Spurs (liv CRY | BHA 40% or blank :1: anyway) ...[1]321

        2) Players benchable prior to GW32:

Southampton (bha wat | LIV) ...[3]133
Brighton (SOU che | tot 40% or blank :1: anyway or CAR) ...212
        *Watford (mun SOU | FUL 45%) ...[1]313
        *Palace (HUD tot | new 55%) ...[2]311
        Cardiff (CHE mci 85% | blank ❗ 15% or bha) ...[2]222

        3) Players benchable in GW32 and prior:

        Liverpool (TOT | sou) ...[3]111
        Arsenal (NEW | eve) ...[1]133
        Leicester (BOU | hud) ...[1]121
        Burnley (WOL | bou) ...[3]113
        Huddersfield (cry | LEI) ...[1]221
        Bournemouth (lei | BUR) ...[2]331
West Ham (EVE | che) ...[1]311
        Everton (whu | ARS) ...131

        4) Benchable in GW33:

        Man City (ful CAR 15% | Blank ❗ 85%) ...111
        Wolves (bur ARS | blank ❗ ) ...[1]113
        United (WAT MCI | blank ❗ ) ...[3]212

        5) Avoid for now:

        Newcastle (ars | CRY 55%) ...[1]122
        Fulham (MCI | wat 45%) ...[2]132

The main changes being that there are even fewer teams likely to have 3 games in 2 gameweeks, which makes it harder to get as many fixtures from this strategy than if the old assumptions held. Although in the strategy's slight favour, City look to have an excellent GW32 which could be of service to the TC chip. If managers using this strategy manage to save a transfer going into GW32, then they could sell a could of these more expensive players for free going into GW33.

Feel free to correct me if I've made a mistake, although I know I don't have to give you permission 😉

        1. Deulofail

The way to make this strategy work is:

          Aim to enter GW32 with:

          - 3x Chelsea (not Kepa)
          - 8x DGWers (incl. GK)
          - 4x "Category 3" on the bench (incl. GK)
          - 0 transfers made
= effective total of 26 players (including TC)

For GW33, this gives you a starting XI with:
          - 3x Chelsea players
          - 4x "Category 3" players
          - 2FTs for 2 more players
= Effective total of 10/12 players without hits (including C)

Example GW32 team which I think is possible for me:

          Patrício (Boruc)
          Doherty, Wan-Bissaka, Luiz, (Robbo, TAA)
Son, Pogba, Martial, Sterling (TV), Kante
          Aguero (TC), Higuain, (Solanke)

          And after 2FTs into GW33:

          Boruc (Patrício)
          Luiz, Robbo, TAA, (Doherty, Wan-Bissaka)
Kante, Mane (C) (Sterling 15%, Son 40%, Pogba)
          Higuain, Vardy, Solanke

THE DREAM IS ALIIIIIVE. Obviously there are variations on this which could allow me to sell Sterling for Hazard in GW33, but the point is that something is possible, even without hits. And if I get lucky enough that City get 3 fixtures in 2 gameweeks, then it actually looks pretty good again. I don't know what I was catastrophising about haha

Probably made some fatal errors here, which I can't see, though :/

Who would you keep for GW31?

    A. Luiz (blank, TOT, ful, WOL, eve)

    B. Digne (blank, car, LIV, new, CHE).

Bearing in mind that selling Luiz would release an extra £0.8m for other transfers.

Money is tight for transfers I want, as have Sterling, Mane and Salah to carry for now.

      Fab, Foster;
      Digne, AWB, Luiz, Bennett, Robertson;
      Sterling, Salah, Mane, Camarasa, Ric;
      Jimi, Llorente, Rashford.

I have sold him with -4 after TC him in GW25 and played only 58 minutes in the last three matches. Today he's been benched against Schalke. It looks like Guardiola prefers Sterling and BSilva on wings. And if Mendy returns...

Not really. If you do last 6 home matches. Pereira 7 shots 4 OT Chilwell 1 shot 0 OT

Pereira more like baps with no attacking returns because of successful take ones etc

    Torn between
    A. Holjberg to Anderson
    B. Ings to Arnautovic

I'm leaning towards B as this leaves me with more money in the bank. However, Arnie's fitness record is a worry (need him to be fit for BGW). Only other WHM player is Fabianski.

Peirera was 98 4-5 days ago then 96 then 98 99. 4-5 days ago on FFFix he was around 40%. Kiko has been -99% forever now -84?

Fancying their defence to do well and thinking of picking up ahead of Pereira.

    Managers without wildcards,
Who are you likely holding onto through the blanks and beyond that don't have a fixture in 31 and 33?

Pogba, Sterling, Son/Eriksen, AWB, Colin, Speroni are my likely benched players in 31/33. (no BB chip btw)
So 9 players for the blanks or 8 if I decide to get Kun next week.

    Thoughts?

As soon as did transfer realised a 4.5m like Rice or Yedlin left me exactly enough for straight swap Snodgrass>Gray from Leicester oh well

Just saw that Yedlin got the assist for Rondon in the friendly with CSKA.

Probably won't make a difference, and I'm sure you can tweak your other transfers to get the budget to fit. Good luck.

    Ings to:
    A) Rondon
    B) Barnes
Rondon has much better fixtures, particularly this GW but Barnes has far better underlying stats and is on penalties
