Leicester’s fixtures and Tielemans’ arrival boost the appeal of Maddison

This regular article puts the spotlight on three players who all have an ownership of 5% or under in Fantasy Premier League.

There is, of course, a smaller pool of players to draw from this week as we ready ourselves for Blank Gameweek 27 – the deadline for which is an earlier-than-normal Friday evening at 18:45 GMT.

With just 12 Gameweeks of 2018/19 to go, we’re heading towards the time of the season when those Fantasy managers who are chasing a sizeable mini-league deficit may have to consider options from outside the “template” if they are to make ground on rivals ahead of them.

All of our selections not only enjoy excellent fixtures in Gameweek 27 but have appealing matches beyond this weekend, with two of our picks in action in Blank Gameweek 31.

James Maddison (£6.6m)

FPL ownership: 4.3%

There was a point earlier this season when James Maddison (£6.6m) was the Fantasy community’s darling, a mid-price midfield gem whose impressive form and semi-regular attacking returns took his FPL ownership beyond the one-million mark.

Gameweek 26 saw Maddison’s ownership fall to its lowest since early September, however, with the Leicester midfielder now in differential country after extending his goalless run to ten league matches in the 3-1 defeat to Spurs.

Leicester’s forthcoming run of matches is – according to our Season Ticker – the best in the division over the coming nine Gameweeks, with the Foxes not meeting any of the “big six” again until the end of April.

Maddison’s fixtures certainly appeal even if his form doesn’t but the underlying statistics suggest the former Norwich star is long overdue some attacking returns: no FPL midfielder has created more chances over the last eight Gameweeks, while Maddison sits joint-sixth for attempts on goal among players in his position during that time (only five premium midfielders priced at £8.8m and up can better his shot count).

A lack of involvement in many “big chances” tempers his appeal but there is a sense among Leicester fans that the capture of Youri Tielemans (£6.0m) could prove to be a significant one to the Foxes’ attacking prospects.

The box-to-box midfielder was excellent against Spurs in Gameweek 26 and there were some promising signs that both he and Maddison could dovetail nicely together in the 4-3-3/4-1-4-1 that Puel employed at Wembley.

Tielemans himself popped up in a couple of encouraging positions but it was Maddison who appeared unleashed by the Belgian’s arrival and composed distribution in midfield, with Tielemans’ ability to pick a difficult pass in behind opposition defences boding well for the likes of Maddison and Harvey Barnes (£5.5m) ahead of him.

DeAndre Yedlin (£4.5m)

FPL ownership: 1.0%

If we are to take “differential” to mean a player owned by fewer than 5% of FPL managers, then every single member of the Newcastle United squad is just that.

There are plenty of names on the Magpies’ roster who perhaps deserve their cases to be heard this week and, judging by the selections of our Scout Squad panel, the likes of Martin Dubravka (£5.0m) and Fabian Schar (£4.6m) may get the nod when the Scout Picks article is put together on Friday.

Salomon Rondon (£5.8m), United’s most-owned player and the subject of over 50,000 transfers in FPL ahead of the Gameweek 27 deadline, is another stand-out candidate.

Goal-scoring has been an issue for Newcastle this season and, although the capture of Miguel Almiron (£6.0m) could prove to be a help on that front, it is arguably their defence that appeals most ahead of their forthcoming fixture run.

Wolves are the only club outside of the “big six” who have conceded fewer goals than Newcastle this season, with Rafael Benitez’s side having banked more clean sheets and shipped fewer goals than the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Everton.

But for a couple of uncharacteristic late errors from Dubravka against Spurs and Wolves in the last two Gameweeks, the Magpies’ shut-out count would be more impressive still.

DeAndre Yedlin (£4.5m), ironically, is perhaps Newcastle’s weakest link from a defensive perspective. Much like Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) is/was at Chelsea, though, a positionally suspect full-back can still appeal from a Fantasy perspective.

In the coming weeks and months, Yedlin will likely have to do much less defending than he has been forced to endure during the Magpies’ recent tricky run.

Newcastle sit top of our Season Ticker for the rest of 2018/19 and start off this favourable run with a home match against the division’s lowest scorers in Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Yedlin has been playing in a more advanced role from around Gameweek 13 onwards, when Benitez adopted a wing-back system and largely stuck with it.

Over that time, Yedlin has created the joint-fifth-highest number of opportunities (albeit none of them “big chances”) among FPL defenders.

While Newcastle are well-stocked for centre-halves and Benitez could, if he wanted to, rotate in that department, the right wing-back slot is effectively Yedlin’s alone, with Javier Manquillo (£4.3m) a decidedly inferior option despite the American’s recent struggles.

Of the 24 league matches he has been available for this season, Yedlin has only failed to start one of them.

Callum Paterson (£5.0m)

FPL ownership: 0.8%

While he has lost his “out of position” tag and over half of his FPL owners in the last ten Gameweeks, Callum Paterson (£5.0m) remains a vital part of Neil Warnock’s battling side.

The Scottish utility player has started 19 of Cardiff’s last 20 Premier League matches and has most recently found a home on the right flank, again taking up a wing-back role in the win over Southampton to great effect.

This “new” position didn’t affect his attacking output too much at St. Mary’s in Gameweek 26: no Cardiff player recorded as many penalty box touches or key passes as Paterson in that match.

It seems odd to back a player who is without a shot on target in his last nine starts but Paterson’s prowess in the air (at both ends of the pitch) continues to catch the eye: the Scottish international has contested more than twice as many aerial duels as any other FPL midfielder this season.

Cardiff are up against Watford on Friday and the Hornets rank bottom for
headed chances conceded in the last six Gameweeks. Only Newcastle have allowed more opportunities from set plays during that time.

Every transfer-in of a GW31 players costs only 2 points net with a chance of getting more if they do well. Over GW31 and GW33 they cost you nothing (presuming they earn the expected 2 points per match and play in both weeks)

So don't be afraid, take those discounted hits.

    Anything wrong with this advice?

Still a -4 vs others who already have the player

Say the same players gets 18 points. By having him you'll be just 4 points worse off than your opponent, not 18.

              That's what I said. -4 (not 0)
So it depends whether you're making a comparison vs your own team, or others' teams

I agree. I took a -8 this week to get in auba fanderson and maddison.
With auba captaincy material I think it's worth it.

I see where you're coming from, but it's not that simple IMO. What about the players you are taking out? They still play GW27/28-30 so those scores need to be taken into account before determining if the hit was successful. I see lots of bad transfers touted round on here, just to ensure they can field a full 11 in 31.

Firstly if you bring them in for GW31, then previous Gameweeks are not a problem.

Secondly by doing a FH in 32 and WC in 34, you're only having to keep them for 31 and 33.

Thirdly many of the GW31 and 33 players have good fixtures from now until then anyway.

Yes, if you sign them in GW31 of course, but many on here are removing players now so returns over the next few weeks have to be taken into account.

Re your third point, this doesn't necessarily mean the player will score well though. Felipe Anderson has 1 assist in his last 7 games, Maddison similar. Good fixtures mean that could change, but there is a reason they are mid price players and it's not guaranteed they will do well.

Yes it's a balance, some of the better players have hard fixtures and could be swapped with a GW31/33 player earlier who has easier fictures.

There's no guarantee with any player. It's bringing them in just before they capture some form. Plus if they don't do anything I've not lost much at all.

Agreed, but if Everton were to find some form and Digne / Richarlison deliver against Cardiff, Liverpool and Newcastle you could possibly lose quite a bit. Your hit should pay off though, good luck!

If you make the transfers GW31 and you are FH'ing in 32, and you aren't a TV-hugger, yes it looks like it is worth the hits to get 11.

I'm the same but with Rashford & Pogba in the mix too. I have been over and over the strategy that's best for me and I think I will bench these players 31, put out 9 or 10 players to cover the blanks and carry Wolves/Man Utd players into the double game weeks. Unless some crazy fixture scheduling hits us I think its the best way to get strong doubles and lessen the damage in the blanks. GW33 seems particularly difficult to navigate as the FH32 team will have 11 different players to a decent GW33 team.

Yes, that's why I think setting your team up for 31 and by extension 33 with a bespoke FH32 team is the way forward. If you FH31 and build your team for GW32 for TC or BB then you are left with a team of DGWers who blank the week after. I can't see how you navigate it using that strategy without taking loads of hits in GW33.

First defender on bench if Doherty isn't fit?
        A) AWB (lei) (already playing Guaita)
        B) TAA (mun) (already playing Robbo)

Will be behind Camarasa (WAT) in either case, but playing 343.

I wouldn't sweat about getting 11, but it seems sensible to cover both 27 and 31. Even regardless of them playing 31, Richarlison (and probably Digne) out looks good, with Pereira and Anderson the obvious replacements. Or Alonso to Pereira/Rich to Fraser and get Barnes in for Kamara?

I currently have 3 GW31 players and an abundance with doubles in GW32. Would it be wise to FH31, BB32, then WC33 with 35 also in mind for potentially a TC that week??

My mind is frazzled and I'm trying not to spend all my life working this out.

And you may have to re-work it out all again when the GW32 fixtures are confirmed.

It's all too much for my head to handle.

Otherwise I need to start loading up on GW31 players now.

              Aghhhhhh.

I have only 3 for GW31 too, but 6 x FT's between now and then. So I could go with 9 or 10, knowing that I'll be covered for any blanks in GW33, and get to throw a party with the FH chip in 32.

Am thinking KdB to Anderson, and either Bednarek or Lindelof to Yedlin/Chilwell/Maguire.

That's as good a plan as any but it's knowing which sides have doubles in gw32. It also means when you wildcard in Gw 33 you can't start any Wolves, Man U and probably City players who will then have doubles in Gw35. Of course you can still bench 4 and transfer in two for free.
This week I would try and only make transfers that keep your options open until the doubles are announced.

Depends on your team, as mentioned on Scoutcast there is so many variables this year that is almost impossible to make a 1 master plan that fits all.

Every man to himself with chips this year, start thinking.

I predict Aubamayeng will be rested vs. Southampton. The Kid shouldn't play 270 minutes in a week versus non-elite competition. Better to save these minutes for major competition.

So, it is best to rest him vs Southampton and let Lacazette lead the way. Then Auba can play vs Bournemouth on Wednesday.

They really missed his cutting edge v Huddersfield & BATE so not sure he’ll be rested

Ok - going to nail my balls to the wall and give my predictions on the re-arranged fixtures from sensible reasonings I have read from various sources that have no FPL bias.

              GW32
              Wol v Mnu
              Che v Bha
Mnc v Car (if Man City reach cup semis)
              Tot v Cry
              Wat v Sou

              GW35
              Mnu v Mnc
              Wol v Ars
New v Cry (if Palace reach cup semis)
Wat v Ful (if Watford reach cup semis)
Tot v Bha (definitely if Brighton reach cup semis, and probably even if they don't due to the Wembley clash with the cup semis)

              TBC (probably GW36 or 37)
              Bha v Car

Bha v Car could also be 33 as well if Brighton lose in the FACQF and the Spurs game is called off due to the Wembley clash.

Tot - Bri will of course stay in GW33 if it's not called off, but otherwise I think your assessment is spot on. Chelsea - Brighton should take place in GW32 because Chelsea got EL commitments and Tottenham CL commitments, making Cardiff the only team to have the flexibility to play outside of the DGWs regardless of results.

Depends on the ground situation - many seem to think it will be very difficult for Spurs to play at Wembley in GW33 when there are FA Cup semis there on the Saturday and Sunday, and it will be easier for everyone just to lift it to GW35 midweek.

Agree we need to hulk this. Last year Jarvish correctly predicted that the fixtures from first blank in 31 will move to second DGWs (35) instead of first (33).

Thanks for looking into this in the depth you obviously have. Do you have any idea when it will be announced if Wolves vs Arsenal will be played in GW35 or GW32?

Also my question, is there something swaying Arsenal from having a double 32..?

It's just a knock-on effect from if the Manchester derby is moved to GW35, which many think Sky will want.

But if the Man U derby is put in 32 (which is still very possible), Wolves v Arsenal will be in 32, Wolves v Arsenal will be 35, and Man C v Cardiff will be in 35 - so back near enough to the popular assumption of 31s moving to 32 and 32s to 35.

Is 2.5 weeks enough time to rearrange Man City Cardiff?

Ie if they wait to see if City go through in QF? Or will they make that decision ahead of time. What happens if City go out of QF? Double in 32, blank in 33?
Or what if United went out too? Couldn’t they play MUN-MCI in 33?

If this happens then a TC on Aguero(Sterling) could sway some chip strategies

Agree this is likely to happen. If this happens, Aguero or Sterling TC is much more exciting than a FH in 32. Especially as many of us have 7-8 players for DGW32 already.

Since you only have 4 players (Robertson, Pereira, Salah, Richarlison) guaranteed to start for BGW31 on your squad and only 5 FTs to work with, I would set my team up for DGW32 and do the FH for BGW31. You can then replace Speroni, Richarlison, Kamara, Pereira, and Robertson (keep Salah) over the next 5 weeks with Ryan, Gross, Murray, Holebas and Laporte.

I have been burnt by Maddison before, but I can't see a route through the next few gameweeks without a couple of LEI players. And I don't have room for Vardy, and I don't double up in defence.

Feel the same but finding it difficult to fit him in.
Don't want to make him my 4th mid (selling Pogb) yet but too expensive to bench as 5th

I think I'll be staying clear of Leicester assets, something doesn't feel right under Puel and they just don't score many goals.
