Captains

Captain Sensible – Blank Gameweek 27 a tough call

Fantasy Premier League managers face one of the hardest captaincy decisions of the season so far in Blank Gameweek 27.

The absence of fixtures for Manchester City and Chelsea, who were originally scheduled to play favourable opposition in Everton and Brighton, has removed several options from the debate already.

Meanwhile, Manchester United and Liverpool, two clubs who normally provide a handful of captain candidates each week, go head-to-head at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

That leaves Fantasy managers with the choice of either boldly handing the armband to one of those players or to look elsewhere.

Arsenal are currently the popular alternative in the search for a captain this week, but with many managers avoiding the Gunners for longer-term reasons, and plenty of viable alternatives elsewhere, we could see a whole host of different skippers this weekend.

As usual, we’ve had a look at the results of our latest poll, analysed each popular player, and some of the less fashionable options, using our members’ data and assessed the offensive and defensive statistics of all the teams involved to find the best candidates.

Captain Poll

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) is this week’s poll leader ahead of Southampton’s trip to the Emirates Stadium. The absence of Sergio Aguero (£11.5m) and the meeting between Liverpool and Manchester United will have played a part in Aubameyang’s popularity for this Gameweek, amassing 32% support at the time of writing. Although he has just one goal in the last five Gameweeks, you do have to go back to Gameweek 16 for the last time he failed to find the net at home against a side outside the top six.

Son Heung-min‘s (£9.0m) trip to Burnley has captured the attention of a healthy number of Fantasy managers too. His case appears to be centred around form rather than fixture, the South Korean averaging 8.9 points per appearance since Gameweek 13.

Felipe Anderson (£7.2m) heads up a crop of differential options as West Ham prepare to host the worst defence in the Premier League this season: Fulham. The Brazilian does only have one attacking return in his last seven outings, but the appeal of a home match against such poor opposition may be too much to resist for his owners. Currently, the West Ham midfielder has the backing of 9% of our voters.

Just behind Anderson is Liverpool’s star man Mohamed Salah (£13.6m) on 7% ahead of a trip to Old Trafford. The Egyptian’s form may have slowed a little in recent weeks but he still has six double-figure hauls in the last 11 Gameweeks and remains a key FPL asset to own. The fact that Manchester United are still without a clean sheet at home under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may suggest that Sunday’s encounter may not be as tricky as first thought for Salah and his Liverpool attacking colleagues.

Alexandre Lacazette (£9.5m) also features in the top five captain candidates for Blank Gameweek 27 according to the poll. The 6% who have backed the Frenchman may have found themselves a shrewd option here. Lacazette was not involved in Thursday night’s Europa League action for Arsenal, which gives him a slight edge over Aubameyang, in terms of security of start.

A few more managers are proving bold enough to look to that Old Trafford showdown as 3.8% have voted for Paul Pogba (£8.8m). The Manchester United midfielder has blanked just once since Solskjaer took over and has averaged 12 points per game at home in that time. With Liverpool’s defence not quite as strong as it was earlier in the season, Pogba looks the most likely of any Red Devil to breach them.

Some slight interest in Marko Arnautovic (£6.8m) confirms the popularity of West Ham’s home match against Fulham. 2.5% have selected the Austrian as the best captain candidate for Blank Gameweek 27 despite the fact he has started just once in the last four Gameweeks.

Salomón Rondón (£5.8m), Raúl Jiménez (£6.8m) and Callum Paterson (£5.0m) are the only other options above 1% while Harry Kane (£12.4m) is not far behind them on 0.9% backing.

Anyone else thinking about captaining Arnie?

I dont see much activity on people captaining him, and even though he has been on and off, he is fit and fresh, and ready to smash this Fulham defense.

A good punt for the ones chasing.

Definitely an option. Lack of form and fitness going into the game puts me off personally.

Would think the same, but he was the same when he faced Brighton after being injured for couple of games if im not mistaken, and went for a brace

Making him my VC after Son. Could switch easily, the RMT has Son at 6.45 and Arnie at 6.8.

Bet 365 has Son at 2.20 and Arnie at 2.25 to score at anytime.

OGS, on Martial, and Lingard fitness,

“We are looking OK – I hope Jesse will be OK. I hope and think Anthony will be OK.

“But we have two more days, they have to get through these two sessions. They have not been part of it yet but they have been doing some recovery work.

“Anthony’s was a different muscle so we think that he might be ready and hope that Jesse will.”

Best looking transfer for next week (GW28) given I plan to 32FH & 34WC. Will likely need to move early due to prices.

    A) FAnderson -> Mane
    B) Siggy -> Mane
    C) Son -> Mane
    D) Son -> Sterling

    Fabs, Steele
    Kola, TAA, Doherty, Holebas, Pereira
    Salah, Son, FAnderson, Siggy, Camarasa
    Auba, Rashford, Ings

        I wish I knew

I'll be getting Kun back in 28 or 29, dependent upon how many mins he gets in the bongo cup final

If he gets some rest I'd prefer him vs. WHU to Auba / Lac vs BOU ...... in which case Laca seems the better option as you would assume he gets more mins this week

OTOH, if Kun gets a full game (or worse, a niggle) then I reckon Auba outscores Laca over the two games, rather than just the one this weekend.

      0FT,
      1.6 ITB

      Fab,
      Kolasinac, Doherty*, Boly, Pereira, TAA
      Son, Salah, Anderson
      Rashford, Jimenez

      Richarlson, Kun, Brooks*

Really don't want to play 5 at the back, so thinking of getting shot of Rich or Brooks.

Only taking 2 hits all season, so happy to take one this week...
      Who to bring in.....

      Hayden for a Newcastle punt
      Maddision (possible injury)
Fraser as although GW 28-29 are not ideal, after that they're pretty good.

        A) Son

Bit stumped. Have 2 FTs so thinking it's time for Digne and Richarlison to go.

Think in priced out of Perreira and one of Antonio / F. Anderson so may look at a Burnley or Newcastle defender given both teams are hitting some form and play in 31.

            Thoughts?

            Would give me:

            Fabs
            Doherty Robertson AWB (New player)
            Salah Pogba McNeil (New player)
            Jimenez Rashford

With Diop on the bench to potentially come on if Doherty doesn't start. Or else could just do one move and roll a Transfer.

Other subs are: Foster Sterling Aguero

            Thanks

Logging off now. Going to sleep on whether to WC or FH for this GW starting tomorrow.

Only have 5 starters, need a good think overnight.

              Laters....

Is this worth (-4)? Will give an extra player in 31 also

              Rashford > Arnie

No if United score Rashford is a leading candidate and you want to do it for a hit

Arnie will probably be injured by 31

a few days ago the common consensus here was to do FH 32 WC34 and TC/BB 35. Is it still like that or has it changed?

Hayden's minutes to be affected by Almiron?

Not by Almiron but definitely by Shelvey Ki and Diame all returning from injury

Diame too, forgot about him, Newcastle have been doing very well considering!

Nah...but Shelvey is coming back from injury and Ki could be back in the team so Hayden minutes def at risk regardless I reckon!

Which chip strategy would you go with here?

                A) use FT to prepare for 31, FH32, WC34, BB35, TC36

+ My team is well set up for this, i.e. I can get 10 out in 31 for no hits
+ Lower risk for 32DGW given FH - can pick best options just before
                - Likely means no MCY/TOT/MUN for 28-30
                - Means playing TC/BB in a non DGW

                B) WC29 (prep for DGWs), FH31, BB32, TC35.
+ Can load up on MCY, CHE, MUN, TOT in prep for the DGWs
+ BB and TC played in DGWs
                - Risk of injuries between 29 and 32

                Fabs, Steele
                Kola, Doherty, Pereira, TAA, Holebas
                Salah, Son, Siggy, FAnderson, Camarasa
                Auba, Rashford, Ings
                Bank 2.5m

Probably A, but depends how the dgw fixtures fall

Thanks - that was my original plan, but now quite tempted with B. Triple MCY and some MUN/TOT/CHE from 29 onwards, plus playing TC in a DGW is swaying me.

I'm still waiting for someone to explain how FH31 gives them a good 33 team

I think the idea is that there may only be a few blanks in 33 so you'd be able to field a decent enough 11

                  good?
