Captains

Captain Sensible – Blank Gameweek 27 a tough call

Fantasy Premier League managers face one of the hardest captaincy decisions of the season so far in Blank Gameweek 27.

The absence of fixtures for Manchester City and Chelsea, who were originally scheduled to play favourable opposition in Everton and Brighton, has removed several options from the debate already.

Meanwhile, Manchester United and Liverpool, two clubs who normally provide a handful of captain candidates each week, go head-to-head at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

That leaves Fantasy managers with the choice of either boldly handing the armband to one of those players or to look elsewhere.

Arsenal are currently the popular alternative in the search for a captain this week, but with many managers avoiding the Gunners for longer-term reasons, and plenty of viable alternatives elsewhere, we could see a whole host of different skippers this weekend.

As usual, we’ve had a look at the results of our latest poll, analysed each popular player, and some of the less fashionable options, using our members’ data and assessed the offensive and defensive statistics of all the teams involved to find the best candidates.

Captain Poll

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) is this week’s poll leader ahead of Southampton’s trip to the Emirates Stadium. The absence of Sergio Aguero (£11.5m) and the meeting between Liverpool and Manchester United will have played a part in Aubameyang’s popularity for this Gameweek, amassing 32% support at the time of writing. Although he has just one goal in the last five Gameweeks, you do have to go back to Gameweek 16 for the last time he failed to find the net at home against a side outside the top six.

Son Heung-min‘s (£9.0m) trip to Burnley has captured the attention of a healthy number of Fantasy managers too. His case appears to be centred around form rather than fixture, the South Korean averaging 8.9 points per appearance since Gameweek 13.

Felipe Anderson (£7.2m) heads up a crop of differential options as West Ham prepare to host the worst defence in the Premier League this season: Fulham. The Brazilian does only have one attacking return in his last seven outings, but the appeal of a home match against such poor opposition may be too much to resist for his owners. Currently, the West Ham midfielder has the backing of 9% of our voters.

Just behind Anderson is Liverpool’s star man Mohamed Salah (£13.6m) on 7% ahead of a trip to Old Trafford. The Egyptian’s form may have slowed a little in recent weeks but he still has six double-figure hauls in the last 11 Gameweeks and remains a key FPL asset to own. The fact that Manchester United are still without a clean sheet at home under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may suggest that Sunday’s encounter may not be as tricky as first thought for Salah and his Liverpool attacking colleagues.

Alexandre Lacazette (£9.5m) also features in the top five captain candidates for Blank Gameweek 27 according to the poll. The 6% who have backed the Frenchman may have found themselves a shrewd option here. Lacazette was not involved in Thursday night’s Europa League action for Arsenal, which gives him a slight edge over Aubameyang, in terms of security of start.

A few more managers are proving bold enough to look to that Old Trafford showdown as 3.8% have voted for Paul Pogba (£8.8m). The Manchester United midfielder has blanked just once since Solskjaer took over and has averaged 12 points per game at home in that time. With Liverpool’s defence not quite as strong as it was earlier in the season, Pogba looks the most likely of any Red Devil to breach them.

Some slight interest in Marko Arnautovic (£6.8m) confirms the popularity of West Ham’s home match against Fulham. 2.5% have selected the Austrian as the best captain candidate for Blank Gameweek 27 despite the fact he has started just once in the last four Gameweeks.

Salomón Rondón (£5.8m), Raúl Jiménez (£6.8m) and Callum Paterson (£5.0m) are the only other options above 1% while Harry Kane (£12.4m) is not far behind them on 0.9% backing.

    A) Holebas - suspended
    B) Ward (cardiff) - sell for Hayden
    C) Richarlison - feel I'll need him in GW31 - would have to be for Maddison whos is a doubt
    D) Sterling - not keen

As always I'm confused with when to use chips. I have already used WC but have all the others available.

Anyone have an outline of their plan? Most plans on here include the WC.

Sacrifice GW31 by getting a team with 8 players for that GW, other 7 players should have a DGW in 32.
Use 1 or 2 FT to get a good team out in DGW32 and use BB/TC
      Use FH in GW33.
Use FTs to set up for DGW35 and use BB/TC in that week

Hi mate. I've no WC and will be planning to get a decent enough team for GW31 blank. Probably 10 players. Then FH in GW32 for the double. Then the team will be well set for GW33 blank. Then I will assess it from there and take a hit it 2 to get the best DGW team possible in GW35. Use your other chips as and when you feel best mate

that is the basic conundrum.. either-
buy players for 31, FH32, WC34 BB35 (downside: compromises your team for the next 4 GW's, e.g. no Man City)
          OR
buy players for 32, FH31 TC32 WC34 BB35 (downside: GW33 will be painful as you'll not have many players)

      Chill, Winston

All will become clear(er) after this weekend (when the blanks / doubles are confirmed

In the event that you're making a transfer or two this week, then you'd ideally bring in someone who's sure to play in 31 / 33 (assuming you have all your chips left), such as LEI / WHU / BOU / LIV, but if you havent' doe much planning AND cna get a decent 10 or 11 out this week then I'd keep your spurs from jangling, frankly.

Had planned on Kun > Auba for donkeys years, but as the deadline looms I'm inching toward Laca

Less explosive than Auba perhaps, but explosive's no use to me if it's sat on the bench (though I appreciate that Auba can do damage coming off the bench, if that's where he was to start to the game)

With Chelsea handed a transfer ban for two windows, how do you expect it to affect the club?

Morale at Chelsea already seems fragile, and this could make things worse or affect any decision Hazard has made regarding his future. They'll get a chance to appeal it, but what does this mean for Hazard, if it's upheld? Is Chelsea strong enough with Pulisic to challenge next season? Do you expect them to bring players like Zouma, Batshuayi, and Morata back from loan deals for the start of next season?

    1. SADIO SANÉ
      • 8 Years

no immediate impact on players, not sure why they would really give a shite. They will remain a top 6 club, so it doesn't really matter.

they are getting Pulisic with no guarantee that Hazard and CHO leave, if one does the other probably doesn't, and they've had Giroud and Morata most of this season and are still comfortably top 6

I'd be surprised if Hazard stays regardless, and the players mentioned in this HT would probably only get another chance if there is a change of manager. I wouldn't be shocked if Zola took charge temporarily and he worked with what he had - especially younger players.
For me, whilst they won't suddenly become world beaters, if they took stock and made use of their talent pool, they could improve under the right manager. We could all be buying CHO or RLC next season for FPL.

      Not exactly ideal!

Chelsea are fortunate to have a great pool of young players to fall back on, which could be a blessing in disguise.

As a fan, I'd love to see Ampadu and Hudson-Odoi taking advantage of this ban and getting some good game time and experience, but it's come at a tricky time with a couple holes opening up in the team with the aging Luiz, Willian and Pedro and weaknesses as left back.

Chelsea and the FA will both appeal against this, but who knows if that will come to anything. During the appeals the ban will be left pending, but it's unlikely Chelsea will be able to drag it out until the Summer for some panic buys - Barcelona managed it but their ban was announced in April.

      huge squad anyway.
probably a final nail in Sarri's coffin. Says he needs new players to make his system work. but will probably rule out the likes of Zidane as an immediate replacement.
Hazard an issue. wanted to go . his reaction for remainder of season will be interesting
i have already shifted assets. when things aren't right at a club then stay away from their FPL assets e.g. Man Utd pre-OGS.

      C. Do both for -4(leaning to C because of Balbuena and Doherty flags)

When did he last not start a league game? Arsenal can't afford to rotate in the league. Prior to last night he'd had a good break.

I've lost 0.3m on Snodgrass. Totally unfair. Not sure he even plays. Would love big score repay me holding and maybe claw back some $

          b) Roll FT and play Bednarek (ars)

Don't do b) anyway if you plan getting him back for a hit!
              a) looks the best of those.

I've been patient and held off on my ft until today. Went to do siggy to maddison and just seen he is yellow flagged.
          Do it anyway?

Hi guys, in need of some advice please
Foster Robbo - AWB - Doherty
          Salah - Son - Pogba - Sane
          Laca - Rashford - Jimmy

          Guaita - Holebas - Bednarek - Masuaku

1FT and 0.7 ITBWith Sane and Holebas both out it leaves me with no choice but to play Bednarek...obviously going to use a transfer to avoid that, but unsure where to use it for the next few upcoming fixtures

Now considering Pogba(C) or a punt of Anderson(C)
