Captains

Liverpool and Man City to contest Gameweek 30 captaincy debate

The Fantasy Premier League Gameweek 30 captaincy debate looks set to be between title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

Mohamed Salah (£13.4m) has opened up an early lead in the latest captain poll on our site, but there’s a long way to go before Saturday’s deadline.

You can now vote in the poll either in the embedded widget below or in the side-bar of the site.

Also, we have published a Gameweek 30 captaincy video that can be viewed below or on our YouTube channel.

Sergio Aguero (£11.8m) appears to be the only option that can seriously challenge Salah this weekend.

Manchester City are hosting Watford in Saturday’s late kick-off, with a large margin of victory expected.

Aguero himself has seven goals in his last three home Premier League matches, while the Hornets let in five on their last away trip.

For that reason, Raheem Sterling (£11.4m) is also a contender for the armband this weekend.

Despite blanking in five of the last six Gameweeks, Salah is still proving popular in the poll ahead of Burnley’s visit to Anfield.

The Clarets have recently regressed following the upturn in defensive potential brought about by Tom Heaton‘s (£4.8m) return.

They have lost their last two in a row, conceding five goals in the process.

That means that Sadio Mané (9.8m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.2m) may also play a part in the captaincy debate for their owners.

Other sides with appealing home fixtures include Leicester City, who host Fulham, and Crystal Palace who face Brighton in a Saturday lunch-time derby.

Jamie Vardy (£8.9m) will, therefore, be considered as a differential option while Michy Batshuayi (£6.5m) has also turned some heads.

Harry Kane (£12.4m) might also come into the thinking of some managers as well as Son Heung-min (£8.9m), for any confident that Spurs can get a win at Southampton.

      True, but those who SOLD Salah completely baffle me. The sellers are still playing the game in March and so you'd think they'd have more sense than to ship a player who plays at home against a side who just conceded three goals at home (to Crystal Palace!) and who has no blanks.

        Take your point but Palace are in brilliant form away - 3 goals is almost the norm ask Leicester, City and Liverpool.

    Would be Aguero if I didn’t sell last week. Ideally i’d want sterling.
    But my captain will be between Salah (terrible awful horrendous form) and hazard (Wolves without Bennett is defence will be unsettled, hazard actually looks quite good again too)
    So probably hazard

    I struggle to see how it’s a debate really

    If you own Aguero or sterling there’s your captain. Otherwise it’s salah/mane/TAA/Robbo

        I would. City at home a different animal.

        And I’m not buying the Fernandinho out thing looking at the game highlights and stats.

        I’m also not buying the mid week champions league having any affect on them. They’ll be rested and raring to get the gap maintained. Champions league is basically done with those away goals.

          i agree, the thing that sells salah for me is he will be HUNGRY to score. he wont be happy with currents performances and obviously hell fire again at some point. He takes penalties and could be awarded one somewhere somehow if no milner in lineup. Sterling can score big, but he is just another player in citys attacking squad and points could easily be shared throughout the squad.

      No point picking a differential if the chance of getting less points than the popular option is high. I did my differential in hazard last week and I only just gained an advantage by some serious flukes involving a -pogba and a low key city.

        because he is a CF classified as midfielder. always stays up top and never comes back to defence. 17 CS + 17 more points for goal scoring. and plays 90 minutes in most of the games
        these bring points, agreed, but that does not mean "form"

            you are a member. check mane's average position per gw. he has played as left winger most of the times and if you have seen liveroool he defends so much.
            he did not take penalties.
            sterling don't take penalties and has played 2079 minutes compared to 2463 for salah. 198 and 177 points and hazard in such a weaker team than them. it's not a fair comparison

    Free Hit in DGW32 planning (CAVEAT: FIXTURES ARE STILL TECHNICALLY TBC)

    If you're free-hitting in DGW32, you'll want to try and make sure that your attackers don't interact with your defenders/keepers as much as possible in order to maximise your potential points. (Or maybe you want to hedge your bets and play it safe - fine, but this might not be so interesting for you in that case).

    With that in mind, it's worth noting that there are two mutually exclusive "loops" in DGW32 as it stands at the moment. On the basis (BIG ASSUMPTION AHOY) that the DGW fixtures for doubling teams are:

    BHA = SOU/che
    CAR = CHE/mci
    CHE = car/BHA
    CPL = HUD/tot
    MCI = ful/CDF
    MUN = WAT/wol
    SOT = bha/wat
    WOL = bur/MUN
    WAT = mun/SOT
    TOT = liv/CPL

    Then there are two "loops" to consider:

    Loop 1: (BUR) WOL MUN WAT SOT BHA CHE CAR MCI (FUL)
    Loop 2: (HUD) CPL TOT (LIV)

    What does this mean? Well, you can read each loop from left to right or right to left. L-R for Loop 1 reads: Burnley's attack have an impact on Wolves' defence; Wolves' attack impact Man U defence; Man U attack impact Watford defence...etc, etc. R-L for the same loop means that Fulham attack impacts Man City's defence, Man City's attack impacts Cardiff's defence...and on until we see how Man U's attack impacts Wolves' defence and Wolves' attack impacts the Burnley defence.

    So what? Well, if you're trying to maximise your attacking and defensive returns for goals/assists and clean sheets, you can't have both Man U attack and Wolves defence, or Wolves attack and Man U defence. If you want clean sheet returns from the Brighton defence, fine, but it'll come at a cost to the Chelsea attack (and vice versa - if you have Hazard goals then Duffy/Dunk won't get clean sheets).

    Sounds obvious to most of us, but it does mean that you can load up on teams in different loops without worrying they'll cancel each other out; or you can go heavy on defence in one "loop" and attack in the other; or, in this case, defence at one "end" of a loop and attack at an un-connected end of the same loop. So there's no harm in having 3 of both Manchester teams ad Spurs, because they don't encounter each other, but teams like Watford, Brighton and Southampton (where you might pick out cheapies to afford the big hitters) might step on each others' toes.

    (Same principle applies at a more obvious level with the blanks - if you've got Bournemouth and Newcastle players for GW31, then a clean sheet for one means a 2-pointer for the other's attackers. But they're only in isolated pairs in a BGW, instead of doubled-up combinations to make the loops for DGWs)

      Firstly well played for typing this up.

      Secondly, from past experiences in other seasons, it does not go as smoothly as this. Other outside influences can result in the reaaranged games not always going in the gameweek you think. 1 or 2 could literally go to a random unforeseen week.

      Try not put all your eggs in one basket.

        True - but by the time I'm free-hitting DGW32 I'll know the fixtures, so it still works 🙂 Not so easy for DGW35 until those are locked in, I agree!

          Hmm, not for me, looked good in the cup final - but not so much in the league games, has been brought off early as well in the last few.
          Scored a couple of goals against Huddersfield, but other than that he's got one or two assists in the last 10 games or so, I think.

          That's true but I still think Chelsea will have some odd defeats until the end of the season and Wolves to tend to play okay against top 6 teams

      wolves RARELY get destroyed and could be a tight game. Captaining a player against wolves doesnt seem too appealing when theres man city v watford and liverpool v burnley goin on.

        Burnley are the same. No Bennett who has been a mainstay will be interesting. Not slightly sure how wolves will counter sarri’s style. Wolves vs Tottenham was high scoring btw

      3 returns in last 9 and only one haul. Higuain would make more sense

    My 31/33 team for (-4). Quick poll on the missing 2 players:

    Fabs
    Robbo/Chilwell/Bardsley
    Salah/Haz/Mane/xx
    Higuain/King/xx

    A. Brooks + Barnes
    B. Westwood + Vardy

    Cheers

    I’d captain Aguero if he wasnt such a rotation threat with a fit Jesus and Champs League.

      I think for starts in next 3 matches (Watford, Schalke, Swansea) it will be Aguero, Aguero, Jesus

      worst case, Aguero, Jesus, Jesus

      I'd expect him to start and get an hour or so. But then again who knows? I'm not sure Guardiola even knows what he's going to do from one game to the next.

              You think he will leave out the leading EPL goalscorer who loves to score at home after a 7 day rest in a tight title fight with 9 games remaining?

              Jesus has started twice in the EPL when Aguero has been fit and once was when they slipped up at home (subbed on at 50 mins) and gave Liverpool the title advantage. He won't be doing that again.

    Keep Son for 1 more week or start planning for GW31 with bringing in Maddison, Anderson or Lanzini this week?

      Wouldn't bring in Maddison and definitely not Anderson. Lanzini too soon back from injury not showing enough

        Who do you suggest I get in for Son in gameweek 31? Need to get rid of him to field 9 players that week.
        No Liverpool as I already have 3. And got Fraser. Max 8 millions to spend.

    What does Ben Crellin get out of his blank and double spreadsheets? Seems like a large amount of work to help out a few randomers if he doesnt get anything for it, must take up so much spare time. Im intrigued

    Which player gets demoted to the bench from my line-up this GW?
    (FPL-wise)... I'm thinking Jiminez...

    Trent - AWB - Digne
    Salah - Pogba - Sonny - Felipe
    Kun - Rashy - Jiminez
