The key stats behind Anderson’s poor form as Lanzini catches the eye

West Ham United made it five Premier League matches unbeaten at the London Stadium with a 2-0 win over Newcastle United on Saturday evening, as the Magpies extended their winless run on the road to six games.

Budget differentials did the damage in east London, with all four of the players who delivered attacking returns sitting in fewer than 3% of Fantasy Premier League squads before kick-off.

The Hammers’ two most-owned outfield assets, Felipe Anderson and Marko Arnautovic, again disappointed their owners for different reasons, though there was at least a fifth clean sheet of the campaign for Lukasz Fabianski.

We recap the main Fantasy talking points in our final Scout Notes of Gameweek 29 below.

West Ham United 2-0 Newcastle United

  • Goals: Declan Rice (£4.6m), Mark Noble (£4.8m)
  • Assists: Robert Snodgrass (£5.0m), Javier Hernandez (£6.1m)

Felipe Anderson (£7.2m) recorded his ninth blank in ten Gameweeks on Saturday evening as his side saw off in-form Newcastle.

A solitary assist in the 1-1 draw with Liverpool in Gameweek 25 represents the sum total of his attacking returns in that time and the Brazilian hasn’t found the back of the net since late-December.

Anderson sits in over 15% of Fantasy squads and there won’t be too many of his owners jumping ship given how attractive West Ham’s fixtures are over the next three Gameweeks (Saturday’s match against a leaky Cardiff defence represents an excellent chance to end that lean spell), though anyone thinking of drafting in the mid-price midfielder would have understandable reservations based on his current form.

Anderson has recorded only one shot in the last four Gameweeks and just three over his last six Premier League starts.

The Brazil international has a modest rate of key passes in the last four Gameweeks, too, creating only five chances – fewer than 23 other FPL midfielders.

Anderson, indeed, didn’t register a single shot or key pass against the Magpies and only touched the ball once in the opposition area.

While far from his best on Saturday, Anderson at least showed promising signs that he could link up well with Manuel Lanzini (£6.4m).

The fit-again Argentina international caught the eye in the number ten role in Manuel Pellegrini’s 4-2-3-1, producing some slick touches and finding space in between Newcastle’s defence and midfield.

There wasn’t much to cheer in terms of goal threat, with one blocked free-kick attempt and an 89th-minute effort that Martin Dubravka (£5.0m) pushed away representing his only two efforts, but the 0.1%-owned mid-price FPL midfielder certainly showed more promise than the more popular Anderson.

No player on show at the London Stadium made more passes in the opposition half than Lanzini, with his 97% pass completion rate being some 20% more than Anderson’s.

Pellegrini said of the Argentinean playmaker’s display:

If you tell me that Lanzini was injured for eight months, you would not believe it.

He is a player that has returned, he is not afraid of playing. When you have such a bad injury maybe you are not so comfortable in the first games, you are worried, you don’t trust too much in yourself to tackle or make good passes.

But Manu changed our game, he is a player giving good assistance to the forwards, always receiving the all, always asking for the ball and I don’t remember him losing one pass tonight.

Lanzini himself discussed how he felt after full-time, saying:

I am feeling good now, I am feeling happy.

It was a long injury, it was eight months and it was difficult at the time, but now I am feeling good and I am close to being 100 per cent, so I am happy about that.

The knee is strong. I don’t have any swelling which is good and, of course, I do feel nervous to play again as it has been a long time. The first 90 minutes and I was nervous but now I am feeling happy.

Lanzini is a potentially interesting differential for Blank Gameweek 31 but, while he reported no ill-effects after this 90-minute run-out, there is always the chance that Pellegrini could decide to carefully manage the Argentinean’s pitch-time over the coming month after such a long period on the sidelines.

While Lanzini and Anderson blanked, Robert Snodgrass (£5.0m) picked up an assist for his corner-kick delivery that Declan Rice (£4.6m) headed in after just six minutes.

Snodgrass was chiefly operating on the right flank on Saturday but security of starts is an issue with the Scotsman, with Lanzini, Michail Antonio (£6.8m) and Samir Nasri (£5.3m) now fit and available options to Pellegrini across the frontline.

There may be further bad news for Snodgrass’s owners, with the former Hull City midfielder facing a possible one-match ban (possibly in Blank Gameweek 31) after being hit with an FA charge for using “abusive and/or insulting words towards UK anti-doping officials”.

Javier Hernandez (£6.1m) was once again chosen to lead the line for the Hammers and did a decent enough job with limited service, winning the 41st-minute penalty that Mark Noble (£4.8m) converted and having a couple of efforts of his own from inside the six-yard box that he couldn’t quite redirect from narrow angles.

Chicharito’s inclusion meant that Marko Arnautovic (£6.8m) was reduced to another cameo off the bench – the Austrian hasn’t started a Premier League match since Gameweek 24.

While Rice’s “out of position” tag is barely merited given that he sits just in front of the back four, the youngster has nevertheless registered more attempts on goal this season than any other West Ham defender.

Eleven of Rice’s 17 efforts in 2018/19 came have come from set plays and the 6’1″ defender-turned-midfielder exploited Newcastle’s weaknesses at dead-ball situations to nod the Hammers in front on Saturday.

Rice may not get another attacking return this season but the erstwhile Ireland international at least offers security of starts: the 20-year-old has played every minute in the league since returning to the side in Gameweek 5.

West Ham’s defence made more blocks from shots than any other team in Gameweek 29 as they largely handled Newcastle’s limited attacking threat.

Issa Diop (£4.3m) and Angelo Ogbonna (£4.2m) have been the settled partnership at centre-back now and impressed on Saturday but Fabian Balbuena (£4.2m) is nearing a return, having appeared for the under-23s on Monday evening.

West Ham’s woes continued at left-back as Aaron Cresswell (£5.0m), returning from (and indeed playing with) a broken toe, was forced off after only 33 minutes of the victory over the Magpies.

Newcastle lost one of their own players to injury, too, as budget FPL midfielder Sean Longstaff (£4.5m) was forced off at half-time with a knee problem and was seen leaving the ground on crutches.

Rafael Benitez said of the youngster:

We will see. I think he has an injury but we have to assess him in the next couple of days.

I think for anyone to have an injury is bad news. But for a young player who was doing so well, it’s even worse.

But hopefully, it will be fine.

While Newcastle had produced battling performances in their last two away matches (Spurs and Wolves) and won four in a row at St. James’ Park, this appeared to be one fixture too many for the Magpies.

While Pellegrini made changes at Manchester City in midweek with one eye on this encounter, Benitez named the same starting XI that defeated Burnley on Tuesday and his side – as a consequence or otherwise – looked flat.

Indeed, over the last seven Gameweeks, Benitez had only made two alterations to his starting XIs in total.

There were some uncharacteristically sloppy displays at the back, too, following the strong performances in recent weeks.

Florian Lejeune (£4.4m) dived in recklessly for West Ham’s penalty, while Fabian Schar (£4.7m) lost Rice for the Hammers’ opener and had a torrid evening before being substituted on 64 minutes as the visitors changed shape.

Schar also picked up his ninth booking in 17 Premier League appearances and is now just one caution away from a two-match ban.

Newcastle’s continued weakness at set pieces, meanwhile, will interest Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.2m) and Lucas Digne‘s (£5.2m) owners ahead of Everton’s trip to Newcastle.

Miguel Almiron (£6.0m), Ayoze Perez (£5.9m) and Salomon Rondon (£6.1m) were well dealt with by West Ham’s defence, though Perez screwed an excellent opportunity across goal and Rondon was involved in ten (five attempts, five key passes) of Newcastle’s chances – one of which was a free-kick from the Venezuelan striker that hit the woodwork.

Benitez downplayed the “fatigue” factor after the match, citing a loss of concentration instead:

We had plenty of time to recover from the last game, but what we did was make too many mistakes in terms of concentration.

At the beginning, we had to do things in a different way, we didn’t do it and then, after, we conceded two goals that we could have avoided and then we were under pressure because we put ourselves under pressure. That’s it.

We made our own mistakes: we started with a lack of concentration and we conceded two goals from set-pieces against a good team. It was the same situation that we had at home.

We had to take the risks when we are losing and we were open. But still, we had 17 attempts and I think they were lucky in some of the situations. They were blocking some shots.

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Fabianski; Fredericks, Diop, Ogbonna, Cresswell (Masuaku 33′); Rice, Noble (Obiang 80′); Snodgrass, Lanzini, Anderson; Hernandez (Arnautovic 68′)

Newcastle United XI (3-4-2-1): Dubravka; Lascelles, Lejeune, Schar (Dummett 65′); Manquillo, Hayden (Atsu 79′), Longstaff (Diame 45′), Ritchie; Almiron, Perez; Rondon.

Who to bench this week? Currently starting Anderson over Periera, but not sure.

    Etheridge (Fabianski)
    TAA, Robbo, AWB (Periera, Bednarek)
Son, Salah, Sterling (C), Pogba, FAnderson,
    Vardy, Rondon, (Jiminez)

Almost tempted by the bench boost...

Only one shot in the last four gameweeks
Just three shots in the last six starts
Only five chances in the last four gameweeks – fewer than 23 other FPL midfielders.
0 shots, 0 key passes and 1 penalty area touch against the Magpies

Took a -4 just to swap Anderson for Mane (and replace Doherty for 3.8m bench fodder in the form of Jack Simpson). Considering how disappointing Anderson has been for me over the last few months I don't regret it. Not currently anyway 🙂

I think 8, if I make one more transfer next week. That's assuming Simpson isn't a starter for the next few weeks, otherwise I'd have 9. And I'm hoping that will cover me as I would like to FH in 32 (don't have a wildcard but have all other chips)

            Ethridge (Button)
            TAA WanB Luiz (Digne, Simpson)
            Salah Pogba Almiron Mane (Deulofeu)
            Aguero Higuaín Jiminez

I'm just struggling to see how people can take hits to take out players with a game in 31, when they don't have 11 players for GW31.

That's just me though, and I suck at this game anyway.

I'm not doing that well myself, probably why I made this change as I need to make up some ground in my leagues and for my opponents a key question currently is Mane or Salah? And so I wanted to be the one who had both (in case Salah starts firing again). Rather than have 9 players with Anderson I think I'd rather have 8 with Mane. I didn't want more than 8 for GW31 anyway as am trying to ensure I retain some key players for the following gameweeks rather than packing my team full of 31'ers

Bournemouth opted for 3 CBs/5 at the back vs City plus Steve Cook was injured, they normally play 4 at the back so the likelihood is Simpson would drop out in future matches.

Any suggestion, especially considering the upcoming blanks and doubles?

The Norwegian Fantasy Eliteserien is now open at, https://en.fantasy.eliteserien.no.
We had a good community on here last season, and be great to have something similar this year. The game is great for those who want something along the lines of the scoring and layout of FPL but a bit different (chips aren't the same as FPL, and man in the stand awarded bonus points). Plus, you have the opportunity to have Lord Nicolas Bendtner in your team!

The fixtures look confusing - double game weeks already confirmed for GW2.

Morten gamst pedersen is ex Blackburn. Think that's about it. Expensive defenders are generally worth it. Brann, Rosenberg, and Molde are the best teams.
Not surprised the park the bus chip has gone, rich uncle looks an interesting replacement

          Not exactly PL standards

Martin Samuelsen was kicking about in the West Ham youth system for a long while, various loans in England. Still their property actually.

Some might remember Magnus Wolff-Eikrem at Molde, did his stint in the Man.U. youth-system and played for Cardiff when Solskjær was over there.

Vegard Forren, Molde's CenterBack has been in both Southampton and Brighton without a single PL game to his name.

Brann veteran Azar Karadas spent some time in Portsmouth.

Cheers - might give this another crack this season. First season was really good, but last season I lost interest very quickly with lots of postponements in early GWs crippling my team and making it difficult to be bothered with after that.

I'm in. Has been great fun for the past two years.
They replaced the 'Park the bus' chip as it was a bit overpowered. The new one, the 'Rich Uncle', is basically the Free Hit chip with an unlimited budget. Could be interesting, potentially already in gw2 where big teams Brann and Molde have a double gameweek.

Definitely the second option for me. Might do something radical like 3xVIF, 3xMolde, 3xBrann and 2xKBK from the start and then look at a WC for GW4-5.

That's my preference, but don't like using up two chips so early. Need to play around and see if I can get an ok-enough team for GW3 onwards just using FTs (otherwise could more than lose any advantage in GW1/GW3+)

Yeees I have been looking forward to this. Also looking forward to VG's season preview which is where I really get an idea of what the prospective lineups will be.

Looks like there have been some interesting transfers, more premium midfield options should be worth the money this season (Akintola, Åsen, Smarason, all the Molde guys)

I'm disappointed Park the Bus has gone especially as they seem to have addressed some of the OOP players who made it so powerful last time (Rolantsson, Tønne etc.). No guarantee it would deliver big scores again. If there are more Gjertsen/Smarason/Tønne bargain enablers then the effects of Rich Uncle could be limited anyway.

The thing is that they wanted Free Hit but couldn't use that one as they can't use the exact same chips as FPL. So the unlimited budget is mostly just meant as a bypass rather than anything else.

Yes, this seem to be the consensus so far.

Alternative is spissrush with Bamba, Vilhjalmson and James, but it does seem a bit tricky to navigate and there are some question marks around some of the strikers mentioned.

I find it really hard to pick players from Molde. Who do you have in the team at the moment?

                - James didnt get many minutes last year. He did good with Ålesund a few years ago. Can he be good again?
                - Knudtzon can be a bargain if he nail down a spot in the team. Can he challenge James for the striker spot?
                - Eikrem is a fantastic playmaker. Is he worth 11m?
                - Ulland Anderson is fantastic at set pieces. Will Eikrem take some of them?
                - Bjørnbak took penalties for Bodø/Glimt last season. Will he do it for Molde?

All of this is said with no authority whatsoever:

I imagine Knudtzon will more often play on the wing, Molde have tended to favour taller strikers recently (James, Håland, Brustad).

I think a few of Eikrem's assists were from set-pieces, maybe EUA on direct free kicks and Eikrem on corners? He reminds me of Arsenal Fabregas in FPL, could prove me wrong but I think I want a bit more goal threat from open play for the price.

No idea on Bjørnbak but if there's any doubt I'd avoid with Forren and Gabrielsen as competition.

I'm really wanting to find some Molde gold for my squad, but it's hard to predict who will feature.

                  - James was behind wonderboy Braut Haaland in the queue last season and lacked match fitnes, he'll likely be very central to the team this season
                  - Eikrem is to Molde what Pogba is to Man.U. if you want to compare Solskjær teams. Great heart of the Molde offense.
                  - Probably some opinions out there, but I have a hard time seeing who will take the other spots between Aursnes, Hestad, Knudtzon, Mostrøm, Ulland Andersen and coming from the deep (trying to get match fit) a dark horse blitz winger in Bolly.

I know nothing about Mjøndalen; the only names I recognise are Brochmann and Brustad although they were good in spells in the last couple of seasons. Apparently Makani is out for the first half of the season with a cruciate ligament rupture and Bokwe just broke his leg (possibly both legs but this may be a translation error) in a friendly. Nice luck.

                  - Occean did well with Odd a few seasons back. He is 37 now, but many old players has been doing good in Eliteserien in the past (Kippe is 41, Frode Johnsen was 40 when he retired as a striker).

                  - Olsen Solberg played for Sandefjord last year. I think he had a few assists on throw ins! last time Mjøndalen were in Eliteserien.

If you’re talking about Tonne and Rólantsson they were regularly in their teams front 3! Midfielders is right for them and attacking midfielders at that.

They proper bottled that one, he was always going to be a pure winger. Some are put off by a 6.5 price midfield spot for him, I'm of a mind there is still value there given the general price-hike this season though.

He wasn't always going to be a winger. He played every single league game in the 2017 season as a left back before moving to Ranheim.

Jonas only said Tønne being a defender was wrong in hindsight as it became pretty clear during pre-season that Tønne would be used as a winger. They weren't aware of that when deciding player positions. Based on the 2017 data, defender was always the right position for him.

Jonas did say there was a mistake with the Ranheim defenders, because every one of them ended up on 4.5. I'm not sure any of them would have been more expensive as they were expected to be the whipping boys, but I'm sure there would have been a few 4.0s.

We'll have some articles but it was a lot of work for some of the writer's last season so we'll be looking to share that work around a bit more this year. I'm looking for some more coverage this season so hopefully I'll get that sorted early next week 🙂

I have certainly fallen into the trap that is blank and double gameweeks.

My transfers in the last few weeks have been focused on BGW 31, with a view to FH32 and WC 34.

This means I have brought in Anderson and Yedlin, and kept Salah. Had it not been for the blank upcoming I would have moved on Salah to accomodate Kane, and never have bought in Anderson. I need to use my 3 remaining free transfers to pull in players who play in 31 for my Man U and Wolves assets, which I will lose lots of value on, just to FH them back in in 32!

Anyone else fallen foul of this? Who do you have in your team who you would not have had if there were no blanks in 31?

My rank has improved since bringing in the "GW31 dross" which many said was a major downside to the FH32 tactic. Guess it is different for everyone, like at any stage of the season.

Kane has scored two, IMO, unfairly given pens. I don't think selling Salah for him would have been a good idea whether there were DGWs and BGWs coming or not

Without the blanks and doubles I would probably have Aguero, Son and AWB instead of Hazard, Rondon and Perreira. Not been burnt too badly so far.

I have been adding GW31 players on bench instead of spoiling my starting XI but yes, I would have made some different choices if it wasnt for GW31 like not getting Salah/Mane/Rondon/Yedlin, getting rid of Schindler instead of Wan Biss

Yeah - think with KDB and Fernandinho out Pep will keep changes to a minimum in the league in midfield. Expect to see a lot of D.Silva, B.Silva and Gundogan.

Only Man U and Wolves have DGW 32 at the moment, so probably Jota as none of the Man U midfielders seem particularly nailed at that price.

Yeah I weighed this up too. City will almost definitely get a DGW though so I am tempted to jump the gun and do that as it means I can get Aguero in for Auba now. Essentially:
                  1) Aguero and 8.5m mid in for Auba and Son.
                  Or
                  2) Aguero and 7m mid for Auba and Fanderson.

Son has a DGW in 32 but both he and Spurs are playing shite. Fanderson is against Huddersfield this week.

Yes, I'm getting confused by this.
People seem to think Chelsea v Brighton, and also Spurs v Brighton (if Brighton go through in the cup) will both be moved to GW32.

According to that, Spurs play Palace and Liverpool in 32 if all goes as probability would suggestion with the cup matches

So Spurs v Brighton (rearranged GW33 fixture - if required) - couldn't possibly be moved to GW32.

Mate, I have no idea. All of this is second hand information for me. If it does happen though, it would be a triple GW for Spurs in 32 if they end up playing Palace too.

I feel the same, I'm set for GW31 - and after that I'll be playing my FH anyway, so I don't even need to stress about it too much right now anyway.
But I think anyone trying to predict it, is really only guessing, so best not to read too much into anyway, or set any plans in stone based on speculation.

I am slightly different in that I am freehitting 31 and bringing in players for GW32. Should have around 8 DGW players for 32 and then will WC for 35

I think there is logic to the Chelsea one as there is some reason (can't remember what) that them playing twice in GW35 is unlikely due to TV scheduling or something, though if Chelsea get knocked out of the EL in the next round (which concludes before GW31), Brighton v Chelsea could easily be played during a European midweek instead.

Folks, here is my dilemma and it’s my fault Beto never planned to well for this blank gameweek

I have 6 players for it now and will probably make 2 changes leading up to the BGW and a cost of -4. Therefore I’ll have 8 players for that week

Is this enough or should I use my free hit?

              Robbo Trent Digne

Hits could pay off for any player playing both BGWs. Think most will be trying to get 9 or 10.

Dull GK and defender transfers anyone?

              Patricio (Speroni)
Digne - Robertson - Lindelof (Bennett, Bednarek)
              Salah - Mane - Hazard - Jota - Pogba
              Rashford - Vardy (Niasse)

              1ft
              1.6itb

This week: Speroni > Fabianski (Pat v Chelsea and 2 playing keepers for future bench boost - no WC)
31: Bennett > Bournemouth defence (Then have 8 players for blank week)

Best defender under 5 million for the blank gameweeks?

I currently have Schindler but am looking to upgrade as he's a waste of space

Could you stretch to £5m for Chilwell? Palace Tomkins £4.3 or Schlupp £4.5 for 2 of the next 3. But they do blank in between. 2 home games of Brighton & Huddersfield either side could be profitable. But didn't help you blank GW31

Yeah I kind of need someone who plays in 31 and 33. Am planning on keeping AWB to play him in 32 though 🙂

Which option would you prefer for gw31 and gw33:

              A: Digne + Brooks + Higuain..........................................this involves selling sterling/kun in gw31
              B: Schindler + Fraser + Higuain......................................this involves selling sterling/kun in gw31
C: Digne + Fraser + Higuain...........................................but this means getting rid of Kun this gw
D: Digne + Mane + 6.8m fwd (already have king)..........but this means getting rid of Sterling this gw

Got 2FTs and struggling with what to do this week.

              2.4m itb

Jota to Madison is an option

Jimenez to Vardy is another option but I am 0.1m short.

              My team:

              Allison
              Robertson, R Perriera, Diop, Digne
              Salah, Pogba, Anderson
              Aguero, Jimenez, Rondon

              Button, Jota, Doherty, Snodgrass

Currently 9 for GW31 but that includes Snodgrass who may be benched.

              Will FH32, WC 34, BB35

              Thanks

Midfielder transfers seem a lot easier than striker given the lack of options. Maybe keep Jimmy through his blanks.
