Why Bournemouth could help us make up lost ground

With just nine Gameweeks to go now, it’s time to make that final push up the mini-leagues and overall rankings.

A huge amount of ground can be made up and lost in the ‘30s’ with careful planning and a bit of luck (or bad luck).

Gameweeks 31 to 35, in particular, are going to be fun with two Blanks and two Doubles. Periods like this are why we play FPL.

There is always hope even for those who are enduring a frustrating campaign.

Staying the course and playing the chips and/or Wildcard smartly can reap huge benefits, leaving the current leader of your mini-league in shock come Gameweek 38 when they find themselves slipping to second place having led for most of the season.

Bournemouth are attracting a lot of attention this week ahead of a kind run of fixtures which will see them face Huddersfield (away), Newcastle (home), Leicester (away) and Burnley (home) over the next four.

We don’t usually look to the Cherries for defensive assets but after they restricted Manchester City to just one goal in Gameweek 29, managers are considering if the likes of Arthur Boruc (£4.0m), Adam Smith (£4.3m) and Nathan Aké (£5.0m) are worth investment.

Only Liverpool (nine), Chelsea (seven) and Man City (six) have registered more clean sheets at home than Bournemouth (five) this season.

In their last four games at the Vitality Stadium, Boruc has been beaten on just two occasions.

A Gameweek 30 trip to goal-shy Huddersfield and home ties in 31 and 33 looks good on paper for clean sheets. The question is, will they deliver?

There are plenty of attacking options to consider as well with cases to be made for all four of David Brooks (£5.0m), Ryan Fraser (£6.1m), Josh King (£6.5m) and Callum Wilson (£6.3m).

West Ham midfielder Felipe Anderson (£7.2m) has now blanked in nine of his last 10 appearances, so why keep him just because he plays in the blanks?

I’ve only had him in my side for three weeks and already want to dump him.

Keeping the Brazilian would allow me to field XI players in Gameweek 31 without hits, but selling him could get me Sadio Mané (£9.8m).

The way I’m looking at it is I’d rather own Mané for Liverpool’s Fulham fixture and field ten rather than keep Anderson and play eleven. Food for thought.

Another player who has been disappointing his owners recently is Mohamed Salah (£13.4m). Five blanks in his last six games have managers asking the same question again, is he worth the money?

Selling him ahead of a home game against Burnley and then Fulham away feels like a very dangerous time to ship the Egyptian. He hasn’t been playing badly, he just hasn’t been clinical enough in front of goal.

The chances are falling his way, he’s just hasn’t been putting them away!

It will come as no surprise if he bangs three or four goals in over these next two fixtures. Sell him at your peril.

Romelu Lukaku (£10.7m) scored another brace in Manchester United’s impressive 3-1 win over PSG on Wednesday night to bring his tally to six goals in his last three starts.

He’s making a strong case for inclusion in our squads for Double Gameweek 32 where United will face Watford (home) and Wolves (away). Is he worth the £3.0m more than Marcus Rashford (£7.7m) though? Could a double-up be on the cards?

Former United attacker Wilfried Zaha (£6.9m) is another who is set to be a popular pick for Gameweek 32 if he continues in his rich vein of form.

The Ivorian international has returned attacking points in five of his last six appearances (five goals, one assist).

His partner is crime Michy Batshuayi (£6.5m) is starting to deliver as well, scoring two in his last three.

Captaincy for this weekend seems to be a straight shootout between the Manchester City and Liverpool assets.

Will Salah get back amongst the goals or will Mané outscore him again?

Raheem Sterling (£11.4m) looks good for the armband again this week despite blanking against the Cherries.

For me though, I can’t look past Sergio Aguero (£11.8m) this week with seven goals in his last three home matches. A hat-trick against Watford please, Sergio.

Jamie Vardy (£8.9m) at home to Fulham and Harry Kane (£12.4m) away at Southampton are worth considering as well.

Good luck for the Gameweek folks.

Howe will have his usual early morning press conference tomorrow.
But he already confirmed Wilson is back in full training, prior to the MCY game. Wilson wasn't included in the squad for tactical reasons in my opinion.

Well I never sold Wilson, so him!

Personally I'd keep Rashford for the Arsenal game, we know he'll start, and Arsenal have trouble defending.

Then see if Wilson plays this weekend, then make the transfer ahead of BGW31.

It comes down to either sell Rashford for a Bournemouth striker this week or sell Pogba for Mane, and then do the other one next week to give me 11 players for 31 and 33. I think I'd rather have a fully rested Pogba against Arsenal than Rashford especially with Lukaku's form.

Few consideration to make there...but simply if I was in your shoes, and I was bringing in a Bournemouth striker this week, it'd have to be King, for security of starts - unless Howe confirms Wilson will start in his press conference tomorrow.

Appreciate the King advice. Think that's the direction I'm going. Not really as concerned about selling players with value invested at this time with all the chips still remaining. Rashford and Pogba are definitely out for 31 and 33. Can bring either or both back with the FH chip in 32 for their DGW and the same using my wildcard in 34

Actually they defended really well v Spurs and picked a tactically smart line up - no Kola etc. Expect Arsenal to
            defend well and deep again.

I'm not sure, derbies are always a bit of an anomaly stats wise, and as long as Mustafi is involved, I'd never back them for a clean sheet.

Is it just me, or are most articles in here (FFS) based on the idea of people gathering players for 31 and 33, rather than writing articles without a bgw/dgw strategy bias?

I stop reading articles as soon as they seem to be talking to those who choose that specific strategy, as they clearly are choosing players on that basis.

Me, I went for the FH31/TC32 version, as are at least five people I know in my two minileagues, with ten and five members in each.

So this hype around 31/33-gathering seems too high atm, with not enough focus on other alternatives. I hope this will change in the upcoming videos and articles.

I think it's seen as a consensus, it's a good option. What's your plan for the 32 to 33 transition?

      1. Stat Sloth
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 1 month ago

Will have approx 8-10 players in gw33, with 9 double players in 32. Lots of CHE, and possibly SOU. Also got 3 LIV, so should be covered with the two best teams for 33.

TC chip gives two extra games in the double, so would be approx the same as doing the FH, only with more points on the player I believe to be the best. So potentially more points than FH.

FH in 31 gives better players than those that stock up on players and will perhaps have to make due with 9-10 players for that gw.

Not saying that my version is the best version, as both alternatives could go bonkers, but there must be a lot of players around that did not want to collect lots of LEI players for 31/33 and hence went for the other option.

        1. Stat Sloth
          • 8 Years
          5 years, 1 month ago

Seeing how CHE might end up with a nice DGW, I don't see the major drawback.

But if LEI needs 4-5 games to get used to Rodgersball, I might get a head start on those choosing "your" strategy.

      i'm doing FH32, TC?, WC34, BB35.

i don't think there's really a consensus on strategy here. i also think everything gets ripped up once the actual games are scheduled.

      1. Stat Sloth
        • 8 Years

I do not see the consensus either. Well, there is one in here, because people tend to listen to the advice of the admins. But on twitter there are 4-5 different strategies being put forward, 31/33-collecting just being one of the top three.

Which is why I would like to see more diversity in how the articles and casts are presented.

Would like to be 100% clear on this, FPL site says: "The Free Hit chip can be used once a season, is played when confirming your transfers and can't be cancelled after confirmed."

Does this mean I can make normal transfers in a GW (and maybe take hit(s) if so), and subsequently activate the FH chip, preserving those transfers I made earlier in the same GW?

Nope. You play the free hit, you get reset to the previous gameweek when the next gameweek starts.

No. Any transfers you make during the game-week in which you play your Free Hit chip become part of that Free Hit and your team will revert to what it was at the start of the game-week before you made any transfers.

"At the next deadline your squad is returned to how it was at the start of the Gameweek."

Ok thanks - so if I make a confirmed transfer for a player whose price rises, thus getting +0.1 on team value - then make another transfer and activate FH, I lose that 0.1 in value when the team reverts to start of the previous GW (i.e. team value becomes what it was at the beginning of that GW as well)?

Who would you transfer out for Higuaín. Same value tied up in both and plan FH 32 and WC 34

          A Rashford
          B Jiménez

For 31 and 33 looking like:

              Fab
              TAA VVD Digne
              Salah Haz Felipe A Brooks
              Wilson Vardy

              For the 11th:
              A) Luiz or Ake (Lose 0.5 in Doh)

I'm not too fussed on Doherty and his money. I stand to loose a similar amount. I wouldn't need him in 30, 31, 33. 32 he has a double but with difficult fixtures. I'd prefer say a Palace defender that week

              Fabianski
              Robertson, VVD, Digne
              Sterling, Son, Pogba, Salah
              Barnes, Vardy, Jiminez

              Patricio, Schindler, Doherty, Puncheon

Don't want to play Barnes this week, but want him for 31.

              1ft & 1m ITB. Need replacement with good 30 & 31 fixtures.

              A) Schindler > Rice
              B) Puncheon > Hayden/Brooks
              C) Doherty > Luiz

How's best to strategically plan for upcoming DGWs with bench boost and triple captain? What can still potentially change in the fixture list after the next round of the FA Cup?
