Boost for best Bournemouth options after Wilson return

Callum Wilson‘s (£6.3m) return from injury looks set to act as a catalyst for interest in Bournemouth options ahead of Blank Gameweek 31.

The Cherries got their first Premier League away win since October on Saturday as Wilson inspired a 2-0 victory at Huddersfield.

After losing the previous nine on the road in a row, by a combined score of 28-4, Gameweek 30 proved a confidence boost for them.

“We needed it. We really felt for the supporters in that time without an away win so we’re really pleased for them. They had a long journey, left early and we rewarded them with a good clinical performance. We were good in attack and solid in defence so it’s a really good day.” – Eddie Howe

With home fixtures confirmed in both upcoming Blank Gameweeks, we’ve done further analysis on the best Bournemouth options available right now, and the impact of Wilson’s return.

Huddersfield Town 0-2 Bournemouth

Goals: Callum Wilson (£6.3m), Ryan Fraser (£6.1m)

Assists: Fraser, Wilson

No player had more shots on target than Wilson in Bournemouth’s 2-0 win at Huddersfield on Saturday afternoon. Both of his shots inside the box were accurate, with one of them handing him the first goal since his last start all the way back in Gameweek 23. The forward’s energetic display also helped him provide an assist, rounding off a complete Fantasy performance and an 11-point haul. With Newcastle coming to the Vitality Stadium in the first of the remaining two Blank Gameweeks, and Burnley after that, interest in Wilson is expected to be high.

“He’s outstanding, he has unique attributes for us with his ability to run in behind and his work ethic. He knows where the goal is and it was great to see him score, he also provided an impressive assist for Ryan in a key moment in the game with a great reverse pass. My priority is to make sure he’s fit and fine, he might be looking at the England situation but I’m pleased to see him score and play well.” – Eddie Howe

The return of Wilson also appears to have helped Ryan Fraser (£6.1m) rediscover his golden touch. At the John Smith’s Stadium, no player created more chances than Bournemouth’s diminutive left-winger. In the absence of the England international, Fraser had not registered a single attacking return since Gameweek 22. The two have now played together twice between then and Gameweek 30, and Fraser has two goals and two assists in those matches, one of each coming at Huddersfield. Those wanting to invest in the Bournemouth attack over the Blank Gameweeks with more space in midfield than among the forwards should seriously consider Fraser now that Wilson is back in the side.

“That’s a prime example of our performance, it’s a really nice passage of play – the interchange of passes (between Fraser and Wilson) were excellent to see. It’s the kind of goal we scored early in the season, the team has been hit with injuries but it’s great to see that fluency back today.” – Eddie Howe

Those looking to sign Fraser might just want to wait until the next pre-match press conference for Bournemouth though. The Scottish international was able to complete the 90 minutes in West Yorkshire but did take a few heavy hits. Meanwhile, David Brooks (£5.1m), making his second start in a row since coming back from injury, did have to be replaced by Dominic Solanke (£5.0m), but Howe believes he will be okay.

“David Brooks was fine he was just very fatigued. Ryan took a couple of nasty tackles. We hope there are no ill-effects from that.” – Eddie Howe

Josh King (£6.5m) should not be overlooked too casually as he had more goal attempts than any other player at Huddersfield on Saturday afternoon, although fewer in the box than Wilson. The Norwegian did not register any attacking returns in Gameweek 30 but has scored in three of his last four at the Vitality Stadium.

There were other boosts for Bournemouth as they had Jefferson Lerma (£4.5m) back in central midfield after serving a two-match suspension. Having him in the side in the Blank Gameweeks should help the Cherries live up to their potential against Newcastle and Burnley.

“It’s a great boost to have Jeff back. Whenever he has been missing this season we have felt that absence. He is a real physical presence for us. I think he’s been excellent. He is another player who has come into the Premier League, improved, and is learning with every game. Naturally, he plays his way and I don’t think he’s changed that. He had been unfortunate with a few of his yellow cards.” – Eddie Howe

In defence, Chris Mepham (£4.5m) appears to be growing into the side with each passing Gameweek. Despite an uncertain first start against Wolves in Gameweek 27, he has looked a lot more assured as he fills in for long-term absentee Steve Cook (£4.4m). As interest in Bournemouth defensive assets grows, the former Brentford man is one of the nailed-on options.

“It has been really good early signs for Chris. He has attacked it really well so far. Mentally he has shown real maturity and hasn’t been fazed by the occasions and the games. I have been really pleased with him and I see signs of a leader in there as well, which is a great sign for the future.” – Eddie Howe

Meanwhile, it there was an eighth start in a row for Artur Boruc (£4.0m) in the Bournemouth goal, continuing his potential for those who are playing the Free Hit in Gameweek 31. The clean sheet recorded at Huddersfield was the first on the road since Gameweek 10, but in home matches, there is plenty to encourage investment in the Bournemouth back-line. In their last four at the Vitality Stadium, the Cherries have conceded just twice.

Elsewhere in the defence, Nathan Aké (£5.0m) continues to be an ever-present although is slightly dearer. The full-back spots don’t look quite so settled. Charlie Daniels (£4.1m) has started the last two in a row, but they are the only Premier League matches in the last nine Gameweeks that he featured from the beginning. Fellow left-back Diego Rico (£4.1m) has started just once in that time. On the other flank, Nathaniel Clyne (£4.4m) started the three matches prior to Gameweek 30, but Adam Smith (£4.3m) was deployed on the right against Huddersfield. He looks unlikely to be involved against Newcastle, after coming off with a hamstring injury.

“Adam Smith said he felt his hamstring very early in the game. Looks like he might be out for a few weeks.” – Eddie Howe

Huddersfield’s credentials were dealt another blow in their defeat to Bournemouth. While the Cherries were much improved with Wilson back, it says all Fantasy managers need to know that the Terriers both blanked offensively and conceded twice at home to a side that had been so poor away from home.

Jan Siewert’s men had just two shots in Bournemouth’s penalty box all afternoon, and only one of them was on target. Meanwhile, it did not take too much from the Cherries to break Huddersfield down, who conceded 50% of the shots on target that they faced.

Huddersfield Town XI (4-3-1-2): Lössl; Durm, Schindler, Zanka, Bacuna; Mooy, Stanković, Billing (Löwe 45′); Pritchard; Mounié (Grant 61′), Kachunga (Rowe 76′).

Bournemouth XI (4-4-2): Boruc; Daniels, Aké, Mepham, A Smith (Clyne 44′); Fraser, Surman, Lerma, Brooks (Solanke 65′); King (Mousset 90+1′), Wilson.

    Here’s my team for 31.

    Alisson
    Robertson Lascelles Chilwell Clyne
    Salah Anderson brooks Puncheon
    Vardy Wilson

    £5.6ITB

Already at -4 but strongly considering the following move

    Anderson > Hazard -8

      Definitely not for me.

Huddersfield + Fulham are a different ball game - even if Fanderson has been out of form he could bag a few against Huddersfield.

If your team is well set up for GW32, using the FH now allows you to TC or BB GW32. You will have a headache for GW33, but with luck not such a big one as 31.

After that reckon it's a choice between Arnautovic (HUD), Higuain (eve) or Firmino (ful).

I'm leaning to Mane, Robo and Salah so probably not Firmino despite the fixture.

For many, this week may be their last chance to consider a crazy alternative chip strategy. With this in mind, here are some other gameweeks in which it is possible to play your Free Hit chips in: GW34, 35, 36, 37 & 38! Remember, it is completely up to you to decide what is best for your team: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUM180xaxAY&feature=youtu.be&t=3081

As an example, here are some of the benefits of using the Free Hit chip in GW38:

+ Use your Unlimited Transfers chip in a week when you have your biggest budget of the season

+ Handpick players with maximum information right up to the deadline on a day where many teams might experiment with youngsters in the starting XI, etc

+ Pick players from teams who have something to fight for, rather than beached teams

+ Carry the (BB) bench from GW34 WC for one less week

+ Can plan the GW34 WC specifically for GWs 34-37, with DGW(s) and quality of fixtures in mind, then sell unwanted players for the final week. E.g. triple on Wolves and Brighton, then sell for their poor final fixture when they are possibly both already safe.

+ Playing it earlier in the season means burning a transfer. Playing it in GW38 allows maximum FTs from GW1-37; the FT you burn in GW38 is irrelevant because there is no GW39.

+ You don't need to account for the boomerang team. People try to turn this mechanic into a positive, but you can have too many low- to mid- priced players in your team, as evidenced by some tame performaces from Anderson and the like. This point is most pertinent in the lead-up to the blanks and doubles, rather than at this late stage. However, If you lose out on a couple of fixtures from mediocre players in GW31 and 33, you might be able to make up those points fairly easily later on.

+ You can use the TC chip in GW32 to give you 2 extra fixtures. You may count this as 0 or 1 extra, depending on when you might be able to (or plan to) play this chip later on, but GW32 may have the the best fixtures of the season for TC on a City player. You could also conseder BB for GW32, which for me may include a Liverpool player, Tielemans and 2 other starting players, which isn't too bad.

+ In order to pull off the optimal FH31-33 strategy, you may have to take more hits than if you aim to minimise transfers using no chips (besides TC). The common notion that you are likely to get 4 points back in return for each hit prior to GW32 FH is perfectly valid in my opinion (assuming you are buying players who play in both GW31 and 33, and you don't already have 10 playing players for GW31). However, would still taking hits which you may not take if saving the FH chip. This can offset each blank player in your XI to some degree.

+ The differential element of this late play may be excruciatingly pleasurable

I have not balanced these benefits out with any negative points. I believe the major negative points are the lack of benefits from using the Free Hit chip in GW 31-33. Therefore, when considering an alternative strategy, it's vital to consider in depth how much benefit the FH chip will bring YOUR TEAM between GWs 31 and 33. Forget about comparing your length to other managers' shiny swords. Forget about shielding yourself against temporary rank drops.

If you think your pointer potential between GW31-33 is only slightly reduced from playing your FH chip in one of these weeks, then it may be time to consider using it in a future week, such as GW38, as you may be able to gain even *more* points in the future than you would *lose* by saving the chip in the next few gameweeks.

NB: "MAY". I am saying "MAY". This means it is not certain, and you should do the working-out for your own team. Using the FH chip after GW33 may not be feasable for the vast majority of managers, especally those who committed to a specific chip strategy a couple of weeks ago or more.

Thanks for your time. Play nicely 🙂

NB(2): As an excercise, simply count the number of fixtures you expect to get between GW31-32, assuming all players play. This does not account for the quality of fixtures, but you may be surprised to find that you would only have a few fewer games than those using FH in GW31, 32 or 33. For example:

        A feasable FH32 team:
        GW31: 10 starters = 11/12 players
        GW32: 11 doublers = 24/24 players
        GW33: 11 starters = 12/12 players
        = 47 fixtures

        A feasable TC32 team:
        GW31: 10 starters = 11/12 players
        GW32: 10 doublers = 25/24 players
        GW33: 10 starters = 11/12 players
        = 46 fixtures

Each tactic could use hits. However, saving the FH is not really a viable tactic if it requires you to take more than a couple of hits, in my opinion. Compare 1 hit in GW33 (to get an equal 47 fixtures) to a team which requires 3 or 4 hits this GW for the FH32 strategy, and you have a considerable advantage, assuming your team is suited to saving the FH.

Who's doubling in 32? United and City? Getting 10 starters in 31/33 and 10 doublers in 32 without a FH seems hard.

Yeah the other obvious downside is that we don't know who's doubling, so there's an element of faith involved here. You can always backtrack in GW32 once you know fixtures by opting to use FH or take a few hits, as many have done anyway 🙂 But hopefully there will be plenty, as Kiwi says

TLDR: Figure some shiz out with a pen and paper to see whether saving the FH chip for a later gameweek (e.g. GW38) is worth it for your team.

Who would you have for the next 5 GWs, not worried about GW32 as I plan to FH. No WC left for GW34...

      Wilson: NEW, BUR, bri, FUL
      Rondon: bou, CRY, lei, SOU
A Barnes: LEI, bou, CAR, che
Arnie: HUD, che, man u, LEI

I like the look of Wilson, but am I reading too much into the Huddersfield factor?

      Rest of team:

      Lossl (4.0)
      TAA Matip Rice Yedlin Duffy
      Salah Hazard Maddison Pogba Puncheon
      Aguero Higuin _______

Thanks, thinking the same. Few of my ML rivals have Rondon but I'm in fourth and chasing so Wilson is a worthy shout.

      Bottomed

Got some final GW31 transfers to make. Help me decide!:

      A) Sterling, Jimi > Haz, Wilson (-4)
      B) Sterling, Pogba, Jimi > Haz, Fraser, Vardy (-8)
      C) Something else

I’ll do FH32 and WC34 so this is essentially the moves for GW31 and 33.

      Fab
      Robbo, TAA, Luiz, Pereira
      Salah, Sterling*, Maddison
      Higuaín, Barnes, Jimi*
      (Hamer) (Pogba*, Doherty, JWP)

      Cheers

Thoughts please. 2FT. Will be free hitting GW32 and wildcard GW34.

      Fab, 4.0
      Robbo, Luiz, Pereira, Digne, Bennet*
      Salah,Rich,Sterling*,Pogba*,4.5*
      Vardy, Jimenez*, Rashford*

      * means no game in GW31. So currently got 8 for GW31

      Which do you prefer:

      A) Rashford, Sterling -> Hazard/ Mane & Wilson

      B) Rashford, Sterling -> Higuain, Mane

If I did A, is it worth taking a -4 to change my 4.5 mid to Fraser to give me 11 players?

      Any better ideas?

Are we doing early transfers? I kind do don't see reason to wait, besides the Liverpool cl game maybe

        . However I already have 3 Liverpool.

Early transfers and catching up price changes?

          Pool play. Chelsea play.

I gotta do a big hit so don’t wanna make things even worse.

Plus I need info on TAA, Lascelles and even Brooks.

          Total shambles.

if you can take a price fall then I would wait as long as possible, for example Son is going down but this wont affect my value, other problems could yet affect your transfers

I'm sure this has been asked many times before but I don;t know the answer:

If for example I FH in GW32 then WC in GW33, I'm assuming the WC overrides the return to the original team ?

A : Foster, Sterling, Son > Boruc, Mane, Hazard for minus 8 to field 11 in gw 31 ?

        B: Sterling & Son > Hazard & Fraser for a minus 4 fielding 10

        C : Sterling > Hazard fielding 9

        Aguero + Jiminez —> Vardy + Wilson for a -4?

Can you bench him? I'm benching Doherty (1.0M of TV) for GW31 and GW33. I think I'm right in saying that, assuming no price changes, if I sold him it would give me about 0.5M less for my FH GW32 and for my WC GW34.
