How Man City’s packed April schedule looks after rout of Schalke

Manchester City coasted into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League after a comprehensive defeat of Schalke 04 at the Etihad on Tuesday.

Pep Guardiola’s side won 7-0 on the night to complete a 10-2 aggregate victory and join Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in the last eight of the competition.

As is the case with those two other Premier League clubs, the Sky Blues now have a busy-looking April as they fight on multiple fronts.

City’s schedule after the international break now looks as follows:

Saturday 30 March: Gameweek 32 – Fulham (a)
Wednesday 3 April: Possible Double Gameweek 32 fixture*
Saturday 6 April: Gameweek 33 – Cardiff City (h)*
Tue/Wed 9/10 April: UEFA Champions League quarter-final, first leg
Sunday 14 April: Gameweek 34 – Crystal Palace (a)
Tue/Wed 16/17 April: UEFA Champions League quarter-final, second leg
Saturday 20 April: Double Gameweek 35 – Tottenham Hotspur (h)
Wednesday 24 April: Double Gameweek 35 – Manchester United (a)
Sunday 28 April: Gameweek 36 – Burnley (a)

*Should Manchester City beat Swansea City in the FA Cup quarter-finals this weekend, then Guardiola’s side would have a Blank Gameweek 33 due to a clash with the semi-finals of that competition. The scheduled Premier League home match against Cardiff City could then be moved into Double Gameweek 32, though official word on that won’t be provided until next week. City already have a guaranteed Double Gameweek 35 involving Spurs and United.

Victory over the Swans would mean that City will play twice a week throughout the whole of April.

Should they then qualify for the semi-finals of the Champions League, that sequence would continue right the way through to Gameweek 38.

There could be plenty of rotation from Guardiola next month, then, though that possible Double Gameweek 32 against Fulham and Cardiff is a mouth-watering prospect regardless.

City’s seven-goal thrashing of Schalke is the focus of the rest of this article.

Manchester City 7-0 Schalke 04

  • Goals: Sergio Aguero (£11.9m) x2, Leroy Sane (£9.3m), Raheem Sterling (£11.5m), Bernardo Silva (£7.5m), Phil Foden (£4.5m), Gabriel Jesus (£9.9m)
  • Assists: Bernardo Silva x2, Raheem Sterling, Oleksandr Zinchenko (£4.7m), Leroy Sane x3.

Pep Guardiola had plenty to say about Leroy Sane (£9.3m) after the German winger’s performance against Schalke 04 at the Etihad.

Sane scored City’s third goal and registered a hat-trick of assists in the 7-0 demolition of the Bundesliga strugglers, which would have likely banked him 20 points in FPL had it been in a Premier League match.

Asked if that was the best display that Sane has delivered for a while, Guardiola said:

No. After the first goal, yes. Before, no. He was not aggressive enough in the first 20 minutes.

I like when he runs, is aggressive and goes. It doesn’t matter when he loses the ball. It is the same with Raheem [versus Watford], scored three goals, but the first half from Sterling last game was not good. Today was much better. But they are young, let’s not forget. These up and downs happen.

I know it is not easy for Leroy, he doesn’t play too much, the confidence always drops, but after 20 minutes he was outstanding, for the goal, the assists, the aggression.

He is a player we know has incredible qualities. It is difficult to find around the world a specific quality that he has.

Guardiola’s comments on Sane were similar in tone to the ones he provided on Sterling after the Gameweek 30 victory over Watford and it won’t be the last time that he seeks to rein in his young players’ egos after a starring role.

Sane was undeniably excellent, though, producing a superb curling pass to set up Raheem Sterling‘s (£11.5m) goal, demonstrating vision to cut the ball back to Bernardo Silva (£7.5m) for City’s fifth and then playing in substitute Phil Foden (£4.5m) for his third assist of the game.

Sane had earlier got on the scoresheet himself when latching onto Oleksandr Zinchenko‘s (£4.7m) beautifully weighted through-ball and could have added to his tally: the Germany international screwed a 51st-minute shot wide when one on one with Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann and then saw a goal chalked off for a marginal offside call soon after.

The sight of Sane regularly dashing in behind his opposing full-back evoked memories of when the German was at his best earlier this season and those attributes would seem ideally suited for when City play Fulham in Gameweek 32, if the evidence of the Cottagers’ defeat to Leicester on Saturday – and the performance of Denis Odoi (£4.4m) at right-back – was anything to go by.

Sane will no doubt be afforded more pitch-time in April but how much of it remains open to debate.

Guardiola has latterly favoured Bernardo in a front three with Sterling and Sergio Aguero (£11.9m), though the Portuguese midfielder was forced back into central midfield in Gameweek 30 and again last night due to the injuries picked up by Kevin De Bruyne (£9.7m) and Fernandinho (£5.3m).

Even on Saturday at the Etihad, Guardiola opted for Riyad Mahrez (£8.2m) over the German wide-man to fill the void left by Bernardo’s move back to midfield.

Once De Bruyne and Fernandinho are fit after the international break and Bernardo is free to resume a role further forward, the chances of Sane becoming a regular Premier League starter again are diminished.

Still, the way Sane rolled back the months alongside Aguero and Sterling would have provided his manager with food for thought.

The Argentinean striker scored City’s first two goals on Tuesday evening, converting from the penalty spot after Bernardo had been blocked off and then squeezing a shot past Fahrmann following an excellent backheel from Sterling.

The premium FPL forward had earlier hit the woodwork after more fine work from Sterling down the right.

Aguero, along with David Silva (£8.5m), was then handed a breather in the final half-hour as Gabriel Jesus (£9.9m) came off the bench to score City’s seventh.

Sterling, back on the right flank after scoring a hat-trick from the left wing against Watford, was again superb and got a deserved goal – after VAR intervention – to put City 4-0 up.

Sterling and Sane created eight chances between them, while City’s starting front three racked up a combined ten shots on goal.

Reflecting on his side’s display, Guardiola said:

We didn’t start that well – we were a little bit scared to play – but after it went 1-0, the team relaxed and decided to play and be aggressive.

We started the first 20-25 minutes thinking more to not lose what we achieved in Germany. That was why we didn’t over-attack.

It was never the intention to be aggressive against the full-backs. It was: let’s not lose the ball.

But we didn’t lose what we achieved and that’s why we didn’t know what to do after the first goal. It was an excellent pass by Bernardo and then Gundogan, and then in the mind of the players, qualification is almost done. After we play at a good, good level.

Bernardo and Ilkay Gundogan (£5.4m) were impressive again in midfield, while Zinchenko once more caught the eye at left-back.

City’s defence again had precious little to do – Schalke could only muster two shots, just one of which was on target.

Having been on the bench against Watford, Aymeric Laporte (£5.9m) completed his return from injury with a 72-minute showing at centre-back.

With Nicolas Otamendi (£6.0m) suspended, Fernandinho sidelined, John Stones (£5.2m) only fit enough for a place on the bench and veteran Vincent Kompany (£5.2m) missing out with a minor injury, Danilo (£5.0m) played alongside Laporte at centre-half.

Guardiola said:

We have a lot of absences today, a lot of central defenders, with Vinny [Kompany], with Nico [Otamendi], with John [Stones]. ‘Dinho can play in that position, was injured too.

We had just Danilo, I want to praise him because he was incredible. When he plays left-back, don’t complain, right-back, don’t complain, play holding midfielder last minutes against Chelsea, don’t complain, playing central defender, don’t complain.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Danilo, Walker, Laporte (Delph 72′), Zinchenko; Bernardo Silva, Gundogan, Silva (Foden 64′); Sterling, Aguero (Jesus 64′), Sane.

They could play Man Utd 4 times in 17 days if they draw them in the CL quarter finals and the FA Cup semis.

Thoughts on chips guys? Will you do anything differently next season?
(repost as posted on old article)
Don't get all the fuss with playing the chips so rigidly, takes the fun out of the game imo with BB being so overrated on here! As for TC, it is just a punt chip that you need to get extremely lucky with to benefit in a significant way from.
Onto the WC, play it when you feel your team can benefit from it the most (and that's not always the week before a DGW).
The only caveat is the FH chip which is very powerful imo and those that spunked that one off early are prob finding it difficult with this BGW-DGW-BGW scenario that has developed this season.

Yeah, that's fair but it seems just a handful on here ever try anything different to the herd! Prob best if they just got rid of the BB, TC and second WC imo. It might make it a bit better.

if fixtures looks fine, BB in GW1 again, makes navigation of GW31-38 easier.

Other chips are flexible with no clear cut strategy until fixtures are announced.

      Agreed

I wish I'd played my WC well back early in new year as I'm sceptical about the WC and BB scenario with just 4/5 games left in the season. I got caught by the herd. I played several weeks with a very sub optimal team and missed out on the Pogba/Rashford rush through other priorities.

And in principle I prefer the benefit of the WC to restructure over a stretch of weeks rather than just 4/5 games when for all I know my team might look ok anyway.

Yeah mate, that's my main issue with following the herd, your team might benefit greatly from an early wildcard but one is afraid to pull the trigger on it due to DGWphobia!

Different season meaning things will be different, and tackling things the same way will probably be bad.

But if the chips are the same, and we're gonna gett two big blanks and two big doubles, than saving the chips for the run in seems the smartest move.

Its not end all be all though

I hear you and I made a conscious decision to BB in GW1 to shake it up this season and it's been good. I've had Speroni and Colin Quaner as dead spots on my team, since I wildcarded, allowing me to invest heavier on the other 13 for example which worked out pretty well up until now. Worrying about BB wouldn't have allowed this. But yeah, I get your point about it seeming the smartest, def safest anyway, move but where's the fun if we're all doing the same 🙂

A fair point. I suspect they'll just keep it as one long gameweek though.

Another point that may shake it up, is that because we have 3 english sides through in the CL already, perhaps 4 if Liverpool quality tonight, there is a high chance an English side wins the CL. If so they would enter the Club World Cup early next December and have a blank gameweek there. Say gameweek 14ish.

The problem with playing the WC when you need it is that ... well ... you need it quite often, but for a simple -8 or a few hits over a few weeks you can get roughly the same team without using the WC, whereas a strategic use during the doubles or blanks can offset the -8 (that -8 is typically required to compete with those using the WC in the doubles & blanks anyway) - generally you can earn more points in that strategic WC week than the general week when you want to shuffle your team

The BB or TC is a bit hit or miss, so is good fun to use anytime

But you are right, it is so boring.

I agree, seems unfair, that you put in all the hard work up to New Year and everyone else can just hit the WC and so the new template begins. Sure , you might argue, well, if you're behind, it benefits. Yes it does, but it's too much spoon feeding. Back to one WC and no Vice Captain, Captain only.

I'm planning BB whenever it looks right next season, GW1 would be good (had 19pts on bench this season) had also considered it in 14 (when getting 12pts) but depends heavily on fixtures - not sure it's worthwhile holding specifically for a DGW.
TC has been a fail every season for me so far, so unlucky with it and hate the huge swings it can create (I TC'd Sane for 3 pts while others got 50+ for Aguero).
FH is vital for the blanks/doubles but i really think next season i will simply use it GW31 and stick to a stronger team throughout the run up and after. Planning for FH32 this season (i will get 11 out hit free) has left me with 3 consecutive 4m+ GW ranks carrying the likes of fanderson, perreira, hazard (and even salah to an extent) just because they play BGW31 & 33.
I personally think one WC is enough.

I really like the chips. Makes the game more interesting and I disagree when people say it's mostly luck. And I agree with you that, nailing TC
(Aguero) you need luck and same can be said about BB to some extent. But using them optimally for your team structure is key part of fantasy football. If you nail all the chips you can come Back from a massive deficit which excites me (for money league perspectives mostly).

I was chasing so opted for different route (WC28, BB30, FH32, TC35) from the most common one. Template hasn't done well in the last few weeks so I've gained on my ML rivals and getting green arrows. Some of it is luck, some is good planning on my part.

Avoiding tunnel vision when you spend time on forums like this one is not easy. IT takes some balls to stick to your own plan. You know your own team best. Also, I think you really need to question stuff and not taking anything on granted. Some posters pretend to be somekind of experts. Better than average managers can look at their own team and create a solid strategy. Still, it doesnt always work. The reason why so many went for plan for 31/33, FH32 is the way fixtures set up in the run in for a lot of teams.

Hmm not sure, could go for Rudiger instead and turn Boruc into Fabianski. Otherwise fine, not a big issue to have .5 in the bank tbf. Maybe upgrade Stankovic just in case things go wrong with lineups

My partner's basically abandoned her team, so it's fallen on me to draft a FH squad (with only 101.4m value):

    Fabianski (Boruc)
    TAA, Pereira, Rice (Lejeune, Stankovic)
    Salah, Hazard, Mané, Maddison, Fraser
    Vardy, Wilson (Crouch)

0.2m left over. Any advances on this or obvious swaps?

    Luiz - Kolasinac - Jonny
    Sterling - Hazard - Sane - Pogba
    Aguero - Jimenez - Rashford

    Your thoughts?

I'd have Laporte or Ederson in given the schedule - they're tied on for two games.

If Palace double then AWB or Schlupp over Jonny given the Huddersfield game and possibly even Batshuayi as the rogue differential up top.

He's scored 2 points or more in every game since GW15. Therefore, he should repay the -4 by turning up. 50 pts in the last 10 weeks, he's averaging 5 points a game and his underlying stats are still good.

Wilson or Arnie the other thoughts but Wilson v similar stats to King last week. Arnie just not guaranteed.

      I think he'll do well v Chelsea.

Prior to Newcastle game we were pretty tight at the back with a box of four players sat deep. This allowed the fullbacks; Coleman and Digne to push up on each side. The benefit of this was the wide players got closer to DLC meaning that balls broke to Siggy on the edge of the box or coming onto the chances in the box.

Coleman fell ill just before Newcastle, who are on form atm and, tbh, Silva got the subs all wrong.

I think it has merit - I'd be tempted too but have already deadended to having Digne who I think will have joy v Chelsea.

Arsenal though... well, that's a different matter.

    Choose an option please:

    A - Maguire & Wilson (11 players, 3-4-3 with Lerma)
    B - Maguire & Hazard (11 players, 3-5-2 with Lerma)
    C - Hazard & Wilson (10 players, 2-4-3, Lerma on the bench)

    Does this make sense?

Scenario: currently on 9 players for 31 (0ft) and potentially 11 for 33 (if watford beat palace, as I own pva and awb)

    - If palace go out, take just 1 hit for 1 defender (-4)

    - If palace go through, take 2 hits for 2 defenders (-8)

But the dwg fixture may end up in 33 anyways?

"*Should Manchester City beat Swansea City in the FA Cup quarter-finals this weekend, then Guardiola’s side would have a Blank Gameweek 33 due to a clash with the semi-finals of that competition. The scheduled Premier League home match against Cardiff City _could_ then be moved into Double Gameweek 32, though official word on that won’t be provided until next week."

What to do with Kun? Bought at 11.2, can sell for 11.5, currently 11.9.

So if he drops 0.1 then I’ll need to pay 0.3 more to get him back in my FH32 team.

    Keep or Sell?

Keep gets me Fraser, Sell gets me Hazard.

Hazard for me especially if you don't have Bournemouth attack.

Not sure price matters but Kun could yet fall to 11.7 of course. And I'm guessing you'll want Hazard in 32 anyway and if you get him now you'll be saving perhaps another 0.2 right there probably.

Bringing in Hazard as my 11th player for BGW31.

Question is, who would you sell -

    1. Pogba
    2. Sterling

I will be playing my free hit in gw32 and neither will (barring a miracle by Swa) play in gw 33, therefore, my decision is from gw34 onwards.

Not concerned by value tied up in either because I believe both will drop to below my purchase price.

    Thanks
