Aguero role in FA Cup win boosts Gameweek 32 appeal

Manchester City had to rely on their heavy hitters and an element of fortune to secure a place in the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

Pep Guardiola’s men were forced to come from behind against Championship opposition Swansea City on Saturday afternoon.

We already discussed the impact this had on the Blank and Double Gameweek situation over the weekend.

This Scout Notes article focusses instead on the match itself and how Manchester City’s assets performed.

Swansea City 2-3 Manchester City

Goals: Bernardo Silva (£7.5m), Sergio Aguero (£11.8m)

Assists: Aguero x2, B Silva

Sergio Aguero (£11.8m) demonstrated just how important he will be in the upcoming Double Gameweeks as he inspired Manchester City’s comeback at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday evening. Gabriel Jesus (£9.9m) started the match but with Swansea 2-0 up, Guardiola brought Aguero on, in the place of Riyad Mahrez (£8.2m) to play alongside him. Despite playing just 26 minutes in south Wales, the Argentinian came away with a hand in all three goals and had the joint-highest number of shots in the match.

It was his pass out to the left which set up Bernardo Silva (£7.5m) for the first goal, and he unofficially should be credited with the assist for Kristoffer Nordfeldt’s own-goal. It was admittedly a penalty miss from Aguero, the ball striking the post before going into the net off the back of the Swansea goalkeeper’s leg.

Aguero scored the winning goal too, although it was under contentious circumstances as he was offside when he headed into the net at the front post. Either way, Manchester City’s star man proved that he can even deliver attacking returns, goals and assists, when featuring in the closing stages of a game, which should alleviate any fears over whether he’ll start both matches in upcoming Double Gameweeks.

With Manchester City likely to enjoy one as early as Gameweek 32, Fantasy managers will be on the hunt for options that do stand a chance of starting both matches. Bernardo Silva would fall into that category anyway with Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m) still sidelined with a hamstring injury. But the Portuguese international demonstrated on Saturday afternoon that he could be more than just a secure starter in a Double Gameweek. It was his goal that started Manchester City’s comeback and he provided the assist for Aguero’s winner. Furthermore, Bernardo also finished the match joint-top for goal attempts, alongside his Argentinian team-mate.

“Yes, very important It was a very difficult game, especially to arrive at half-time losing 2-0, it’s always difficult playing away, against a team that made it very difficult for us, and in the end we’re very happy with the comeback and with the win.” – Bernardo Silva

Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling (£11.5m) also played a key part in the result. He was another important player who was initially given the night off but was called into action in the place of Leroy Sané (£9.3m) just before the hour-mark. It was Sterling who won the penalty although images suggested that Cameron Carter-Vickers actually got the ball and did not foul him.

Guardiola was keen to defend Mahrez though, even though he was the one who was brought off when the Manchester City team needed tweaking. The fact he started this match, and did not complete it, does indicate that, like Sané, he is still in the second string XI for now. However, with all the fixtures coming up for the Citizens, Guardiola believes he is in good enough form to be utilised relatively often. With that in mind, Mahrez will probably start at least one Double Gameweek match this season.

“I have the feeling – I know we will be judged because we were losing 2-0 – but I had the feeling that he played good, so he is playing good. I am not a guy who even that…you know that we are here together two or three seasons here when we drop points or lose points, points at someone? Never so always very demanding. He is training hard and play as much good as possible. That is the only way. Everyone is going to play, we need ten minutes or 15 minutes as good as possible, and it’s not about that. I think that we are here so far because of everybody, not just for 11 or 12 players, it’s about everyone who makes their own contribution and it was massive.” – Pep Guardiola

We should take some time to consider Manchester City’s defence as they were undone twice against Championship opposition. That was made all the more worrying by the fact that Guardiola selected as close to his first choice back-four as was possible. Fabian Delph (£5.3m) started at left-back with Kyle Walker (£6.4m) on the right, Aymeric Laporte (£5.9m) and Nicolas Otamendi (£6.0m) in the middle. Given who is and is not available for Manchester City right now, it is hard to see Guardiola making too many changes to the defence in upcoming Premier League matches. Those looking to this end of the pitch in the Double Gameweeks will have to hope this trip to Swansea was just a blip, especially considering it’s four clean sheets in five for the Citizens in the league.

The international break has already handed Manchester City something of a boost as three players have already withdrawn from their respective country’s squads. Fabian Delph (£5.3m) was revealed to have an injury after being replaced by Oleksandr Zinchenko (£4.7m) at Swansea, while John Stones (£5.2m) missed the FA Cup match altogether – so the two are no longer involved with England. Otamendi has also pulled out of the Argentina squad with an ankle problem. The three players are a key part of Manchester City’s strength in depth as they chase the quadruple, so some time for them to recover is important for their chances in the Premier League.

April looks particularly busy for Manchester City with their Gameweek 33 match against Cardiff will now have to be played in a midweek slot, because of the FA Cup semi-final and they are still involved in the Champions League. Once the Double Gameweeks are confirmed for them, we will have to carefully monitor their squad to see how rotation is affected by their scehdule.

“Pray to come back fit. That is what I want. They have to go there play with their national team, enjoy, help their own national teams but hopefully, they will come back fit like they are nowYeah, the people who don’t have the international team have a week off. They have to train, they will have a programme to train every day a little bit, and after you have one week to prepare for Fulham and the next games. The fixtures we have in April, that is why we need everybody.” – Pep Guardiola

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Delph (Zinchenko 57′), Laporte, Otamendi, Walker; D Silva, Gündogan, B Silva; Sané (Sterling 57′), Jesus, Mahrez (Aguero 64′).

Does anybody fancy double CPL defence? AWB and Schlupp are great enablers, looking at 8 points each if they shut out Huddersfield and play in both matches- all for less than 9.0.

Palace at home to Huddersfield is not quite so tempting as if first seems when you look at their record.

Schlupp should play both but Palace have quite a few options in central mid where he’s been playing.

If I make one FT, then use the FH chip, does my one FT get canceled and that player restored at his GW31 SP and PP to my team after the deadline for GW32? Can you use the FH chip after you make any number of transfers for GW32?

    1. MDK

      5 years, 11 days ago

      https://www.premierleague.com/news/666443

And transfers made before activating the chip?
Any transfers made in the Gameweek before activating the Free Hit chip will be incorporated in your new squad.

Any transfer costs or "hits" spent before activating the chip will then be restored.

However, it also means that any players sold will return to your squad in the next Gameweek.

What happens after I’ve played the chip?
Once the Gameweek deadline passes, the players brought in with the Free Hit depart and the original players return to the squad.

For example, Willian (£7.2m) is transferred out ahead of Gameweek 35 and swapped for Wilfried Zaha (£6.9m) with the Free Hit chip activated.

At 11.31 BST on Saturday, April 21, Willian returns to your squad for Gameweek 36 and Zaha departs.

How will it affect my player prices?
After playing your Free Hit chip, the bank balance and squad is restored to their state before the previous deadline. Any player price changes taking place over the previous Gameweek are reflected.

Using the example above, while away from your squad, let's say Willian rises in price to £7.3m, while Zaha also increases to £7.0m.

Once the squad reverts back ahead of Gameweek 36, Willian will return at his new price of £7.3m, adding to the squad value.

But any profit made on Zaha will be lost.

Similarly, if any player transferred out with the Free Hit goes down in price, this will be reflected in their value and the total squad value on their return.

Was going to have a cheap DGWer like Valery (4.0) on my bench but really no point is there?

If you're keeping up to date with injury news then all your team should at least play the first game. And if they're for some reason rested for the first game, they should at least feature as sub or in their second game. Plus, basement mids like Bacuna (4.2) will at least get you a point if by some freak scenario you do end up with a 0 (non-defender) so really no reason to spend even an extra 0.2m on your bench right?

Bernardo Silva played Fulham & Cardiff back to back in GWs 5 & 6. He played 180 minutes and scored 17 points.

He hasn't been a great FPL asset, but keep in mind the quality of the opposition for this DGW32. A City defender can get clean sheets, but no matter how much they dominate the game it's just a clean sheet. However, if they absolutely destroy their 2 opponents then you may wish you had a 3rd attacker as well as Sterling and Aguero, who will both be 100% template. In a way, Bilva or Dilva could be an interesting differential.

I think we have to consider the fixtures when making these types of decisions. Can a Duffy or a Schlupp match a Laporte? Possibly. But can many attackers match the potential of a City attacking player against two of the worst defences in the league? If both games finished 6-1 you would be so annoyed having a City defender when you could have possibly had something like a goal and two assists from a Silva.

As for which Silva, I've been torn too. At the moment I'm on Bilva though. I found a way to make the most of the extra 1m.

Exactly. Have to take the gamble in this situation. It's a bit like the Mane vs 2nd Liverpool defender debate. Sure, Liv keep lots of clean sheets, but it only takes one slip for the CS to be lost.

I had wanted to find a good way of getting him in but hadn't worked out a good balance, until I realised I could get this tasty bunch (assuming Lukaku is fit):

      Ryan
      Lindelof, Luiz, Azpi, Schlupp

    Luiz, Lindelof, Laporte, Schlupp
    Sterling, Haz, Pogba
    Kun, Kane, Zaha
    (3.9) (Stephens, H-O/Romeu, 3.8def)

    B) The "Red Devil"
    Ederson
    Luiz, Schlupp, AWB/Duffy/Boly
    Sterling, Pogba, Haz, Mili
    Kun, Lukaku, Rashford
    (3.9) (Stephens, Connolly, Simpson)

    C) The "Balanced One"
    Ederson
    Lindelöf, Luiz, Azpi, Schlupp
    Sterling, Pogba, Haz, Mili
    Kun, Lukaku
    (3.9) (Stephens, Solanke, Simpson)

even as a MUN fan I'm a little wary of Rashford, unsure he's a good pick on FH. In saying that Zaha is very punty too, I might actually go 442 or 352 on FH myself with two big strikers.

Huddersfield, Newcastle, Southampton, Bournemouth, Everton, Crystal Palace, and Watford all scored at the Etihad this season. No way am i wasting a slot on a defender.

    6-1 HUD
    2-1 NEW
    6-1 SOU
    3-1 BOU
    3-1 EVE
    2-3 CRY
    3-1 WAT

I think this is something to consider. It isnt a coincidence they do tend to have lapses in concentration at home, and i wouldn’t be suprised to see it again.

By the same token Liverpool have conceded at home to Burnley Leicester and Palace very recently ie in 3 of 5 games.

Also City have scored just 4 goals in their past 3 away games

I've ended up with Ashley Young in my team after far too much tinkering! Screw this, I'm leaving it alone for a week, goodnight all 🙂

    Ederson

    Boly. Luiz. Schlupp

    Sterling. Pogba. Son. Hazard

    Aguero. Rashford. Bats

    Bech- Romeu/ 3.8./3.9

I'm on triple captain this gameweek if Southampton don't have a double this gameweek. Question is whether to go Ryan or Guaita and I'm leaning towards Ryan right now. Team is as follows:

    Ryan
    Montoya Schlupp Kolasinac
    Hazard Sterling Pogba Son
    Rashford Aguero Jimenez

    Subs: Guaita, TAA, McNeil, Bednarek

    Thoughts?

      Definitely Ryan

I see Guaita a lot in FH teams is he not a risk for starting?

I'm not going near him. Hennessey got a start before picking up an injury and Guita was shaky in the last match

Hodgson made it sound like he will pick Hennessey against the taller teams. Could get a game at home to Hudders

Right thanks, I was thinking considering the mistakes guaita made in the last game the chances of him not starting are very likely.

    Sterling Milivojevic Pogba Hazard
    Kun Kane Jimmy

Probably wouldn't have Doherty IMO with the uncertainty.

Lindelof seems a better and cheaper option than De Gea

Yeah fortunately I was able to switch to smalling no news of any babies for him and he does not play for England,
I am trying to pick players who do travel in internationals or at least not start - if possible.

    A. Luiz and Laporte (4-3-3)
    B. Schlupp and B.Silva (3-4-3)

    Will have AWB regardless

A easy for me B silva is a great real life player but a terrible fpl one as he is the link man to the assisters mostly.

Sorry if being a bit lame, but I see lots of FH teams with Hazard in. Are Chelsea expected to have a DGW? I've just drafted a team based on Spurs, Man U, and Man City have DGW's. That will have to change in Chelsea have one too. Thanks

If there is not a DGW for both there will be uproar and panic on here.
