Interview with Fantasy Eliteserien expert Jonas Bergh-Johnsen

In our latest video and podcast, Joe chats to TV journalist Jonas Bergh-Johnsen, who has been closely involved with the development of Norway’s top-flight game, Fantasy Eliteserien.

As a football reporter and host for TV channel Discovery Norway and co-host of Fantasy Football podcast, Fantasy FK, he is among a group of experts that Eliteserien Fantasy’s developers have called on for advice.

During his interview with Joe, Jonas explains how he has helped ensure this season’s pricing aims to reflect points potential across all teams and why bargain hunters will have to work even harder this time around.

While Fantasy Eliteserien’s gameplay and interface will be familiar to Fantasy Premier League managers, Jonas discusses the notable differences.

Chief among these is the game’s innovative chips, including the ‘Rich Uncle’ that offers Fantasy managers the chance to deploy a free hit with an unlimited budget.

Another is Fantasy Eliteserien’s use of a ‘man in the stands’ method of choosing bonus. Meanwhile, Norway top-flight calendar means that Double Gameweeks can often arrive early, due to cup commitments and the Scandinavian weather.

His top player picks for the start of the season are also revealed, as is his strategy for dealing with the first Double Gameweek of the season in Round 2.

Jonas also talks about his love of Fantasy Premier League. This season he is currently ranked inside the top 3,000, has two top 500 finishes and a further two in the top 1,500 across his ten-year career.

Whether you are a long time Fantasy Eliteserien player or looking to play for the first time, Jonas offers invaluable advice ahead of this season’s launch on March 30.

Hey all, a tad different. Got 2.7 ITB with this team but not sure where to spend...

    DDG // 3.9
    Luiz Duffy Schlupp // 3.8 3.8
    Sterling Hazard Pogba DSilva Milivojevic
    Aguero Rashford // 4.3

Thoughts much appreciated! 🙂 obvious alternative if unsure on DSilva is downgrade to 4.2, DDG —> Ederson, upgrade 3rd striker. Which would you prefer?

Got my FH team down to 3 Man U, 3 Che and 3 City with a defender, mid and fwd for each:

    Foster
    Laporte Luiz Lindelof
    Sterling Pogba Deu Hazard
    Aguero Higuain Rashford

1.1 ITB (could do Luiz to Azpi if worth it)

Can see why people don't like Higuain but I think he can return against those two teams. The issue is that I don't trust any team to keep clean sheets (except maybe City) so that just leaves their attackers. The other mids and defenders don't seem to appeal (even Deu is a rotation risk, but most have one bad fixture). I wouldn't mind Lukaku. So maybe High becomes him and I change Lindelof

Can’t understand some of the sheep mentality.

Why is Higuain not a good option? He is getting a large number of chances and shots in the box and will capitalise against those poor defences, just as he did against Fulham and Huddersfield. He is a favourite of Sarri’s and will start both.

People saying City defence is essential - I think their ceiling is 6 points for a clean sheet and won’t be getting any BAPS as these will be dominated by the attackers in a goal route. Bilva is a favourite of Pep’s and has both a goal and assist in his last 2 starts in all competitions. With one assist alone his floor is the defensive players ceiling.

Not seeing the love for Palace. Yes they have the Terriers at home, however, can’t see them getting anything at Spurs new stadium. Saying Batsuayi is a better option than Rash, Higuain or even Jimenez is delusional.

Higuain has majorly failed the eye test for me, looks well off PL pace, and doesn't look especially interested on the pitch.
As you say the stats show he is getting 'big chances in the box' - but he's not taking them.
I do agree that he'll play both games though as a Sarri favourite.

Can't argue with the City fixtures, and good chances for two CSs.
Although, I have B.Silva as my third City player.

Getting big chances in the box but not taking them - all I see in that statement is potential future FPL points. We're not talking about Benteke here, we're talking about Higuain. Eventually those shots start going in. He seriously could have had 4 goals by half time vs Fulham, there were some really close calls with a great save and a few misses. It's just naive to say he won't score because he hasn't been scoring many so far.

I would rather a striker who gets loads of chances and to this point hasn't been putting them away, but has a history of doing so, compared to a striker who isn't getting many chances in the first place. The former shows FPL potential, the latter doesn't. I'm not sure about being top of goal attempts in the box can make you a bad FPL option. It's kinda the whole point of the game to see those changing trends before they happen.

            1. HamezMace
              • 9 Years

I agree with you about spotting trends, and underlying stats.
But from watching the games Higuain just doesn't look sharp, he's easily knocked off the ball, and when he gets in the position to score, he just doesn't take the chance.
..and he doesn't have history of doing so in the PL. Plenty of strikers have come to the PL having been successful in other leagues and failed here.

He has two good fixtures, Sarri will play him in both games, those two alone mean he shouldn't be avoided.
But for me, he's not in good form, and doesn't look good on the eye test, so I won't be considering him.

Yes, Chelsea have the fixtures - I'm currently on a defensive double up - but no Hazard or Higuain.

I'm going to be flip flopping between Hazard and Kane all week I think.

100% agree mate. The sheep mentality is crazy. People just writing off Higuain because they don't like the look of his general play, which really doesn't matter when it comes to FPL if he scores goals. Then people say he's only scored against poor teams in the PL. Exactly! And he's about to play two more of them. Better option than Kane or Lukaku in my opinion, even if price wasn't a factor, but he's got that in his favour too.

Nor should Higuain's absence of form, or the appeal of 2 very likely clean sheets.

Don't necessarily disagree with you though, I was just joking about sheep following the exact ideas of someone telling them not to be sheep

There is loads of talk around about how bad Higuain is. Picking him goes against a lot of popular opinion.

What's your defensive plan? I assume you have triple city attack, and then only one Chelsea defender with hazard+Higuain double up and as you have said you don't see the love for palace.
1 utd, 1 Chelsea and what else? Schlupp looks good to me as it stands, mainly because he's oop.

Got Hig in my team now and happy to say good-bye temporarily for FH rather than be disappointed again. As I have said above, this could be when it all falls into place for him, but I am sick of him.

Re. City defence, more than decent chance of points and cheapest way to get three City in the team.

Chelsea have three games in 7 days. Their full schedule is 7 games in 21 days.

Higuain is old and unfit. He will be rested for one of the three games. I reckon it will be the midweek one against Brighton.

And Lukaku won't start 3 games in 7 days either. Thankfully Utd's schedule over GW32 is easier because they don't have the PL game on the Saturday in GW33.

Not sure it needs to be called anything derogatory - it's just the majority of people agreeing on an issue. They might end up being right, they might end up being wrong (and if they are wrong, even better for the minority who disagreed with them 🙂 )

There is too much group thinking here and really tires me. A scout mentions a player on the scoutcast and suddenly a 100 teams are posted with that player.

The free hit for me is where the most ground can be made. Don't just pick the same players everyone else is getting, that's pointless. Yes, it "may" help to increase rank somewhat but it won't help you make a substantial rank gain.

Wow dodged a bullet on Spurs assets after seeing their past record vs Liv and low scoring 1-0 wins vs CPL three games straight. That coupled with poor form makes it a good edge to spend on defence and midfield instead. Or maybe get another chelsea attacking asset

Think I may almost be happy (if Lukaku fit). Have I nailed it?

    Kepa
    Luiz, Schlupp, Smalling*
    Sterling, Haz, Pogba, Bilva*, Deulo
    Kun, Lukaku
    (Filth x4)

Alternative to Bilva, Smalling is Dilva, Duffy

    What do you think?!

    1. Geordienufc1
      • 10 Years

Prefer the Dilva Duffy combo personally. The rest looks reasonable 🙂 I'd personally steer clear of Deulofeu given Watford will clearly prioritise the FA cup game (plus Deu's very streaky record) but I guess you can't ask for much from a 5th mid.

Many, including on Watford forums, saying the rotation risk is being overdone. They have decent enough rest time. Just not sure they’ll do more than pull him a bit early

haha hideous! I would consider maybe swapping deu and Bilva. I think bilva points potential isnt high and doesnt reflect his performance and i doubt deu will play both with the big fa cup game coming. I personally like Milli, guarenteed 180 mins, on set pieces and has a fixture in the next blank. Could easily just get 1 penalty and wrap up some bonus as well.

for a -8 that is a great team. I myself have no WC or FH so am going for a bigger hit than -8.

Getting absolutely nowhere with my FH team so I've started working on a potential Wildcard 34 team, which is a lot more exciting. Any thoughts?

    I'm well aware that:
    1) Defence is shocking (but I don't really fancy top team defenders due to fixtures)
    2) My TV is low so many of you would be able to upgrade the defenders for example

    Foster - Ryan
    Duffy - Jonny - Kolasinac - Holebas - Valery
    Pogba - Sterling - Mané - Deulofeu - Stephens
    Jimenez - Kane - Aubameyang

    This would give me:
    - 3 x Brighton for DGW34
    - 14 DGW players + Mané for DGW35
    - Mostly players with decent fixtures for the run in
    - The choice of TC Kane (West Ham h), Mané (Hudds h) or Aubameyang (Brighton h) for example.

Could also chose to swap Auba to Lacazette to free up funds. Could also leave Mané out and get another DGW player instead, and swap Mané and Trent in for GW36 instead.

    Thanks!
