Clues to Wolves and Man City rotation in Portugal draw

Friday evening’s international matches gave some indication of which players will be fresher than others for Double Gameweek 32.

A lot of the attention was on disappointing results for Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, but we’ve looked deeper than the exploits of those worldwide superstars.

Euro 2020 qualifying

Portugal 0-0 Ukraine

  • Rui Patrício (£4.5m) – 90 minutes
  • Bernardo Silva (£7.5m) – 90 minutes
  • Oleksandr Zinchenko (£4.7m) – 90 minutes
  • Joao Moutinho (£5.3m) – 87 minutes
  • Rúben Neves (£4.9m) – 62 minutes
  • Diogo Jota (£6.1m) – 0 minutes

Portugal’s 0-0 draw with Ukraine held some clues to suggestions of rotation at Wolves in Double Gameweek 32, ahead of their FA Cup semi-final the following weekend.

Goalkeeper Rui Patrício (£4.5m) played the whole fixture, while Joao Moutinho (£5.3m) was involved for 87 minutes and Rúben Neves (£4.9m) was replaced in the 62nd minute.

Both central midfielders were rested the last time Nuno Espirito Santo rotated his side ahead of FA Cup action, so their heavy involvement for their countries could count against their hopes of two starts in Double Gameweek 32.

However, it was good news for Diogo Jota‘s (£6.1m) chances of significant minutes in the upcoming expanded round of fixtures. He was an unused substitute for Portugal after earning his first call-up to the senior side.

Manchester City options Bernardo Silva (£7.5m) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (£4.7m) both played 90 minutes themselves in their countries’ first matches of the international break, the former on the right of an attacking front three.

With Riyad Mahrez (£8.2m) an unused substitute for Algeria and Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m) not on duty for Belgium but reportedly close to a return, Pep Guardiola will potentially have fresh options to rotate with Bernardo if he wishes. That may be important for him considering how busy Manchester City’s schedule is.

Albania 0-2 Turkey

  • Cenk Tosun (£6.4m) – 90 minutes
  • Caglar Söyüncü (£4.9m) – 0 minutes

Everton striker Cenk Tosun (£6.4m) had a productive evening against Albania on Friday as he played 90 minutes for Turkey, assisting Burak Yilmaz’s opening goal.

Meanwhile, Caglar Söyüncü (£4.9m) continues to be on the fringes of both Leicester City and his national side as he was an unused substitute.

Andorra 0-2 Iceland

  • Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.3m) – 90 minutes
  • Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.5m) – 83 minutes
  • Aron Gunnarsson (£4.4m) – 63 minutes

Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.3m) got a full 90-minute outing in the number 10 role for Iceland on Friday night, although was not involved in either of their goals.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.5m), who is still rebuilding to full fitness at Burnley, featured for 83 minutes and will be hoping it helps him make a second consecutive league start in Double Gameweek 32.

Aron Gunnarsson (£4.4m), who recently returned to regular starting action for Cardiff, managed 63 minutes before being replaced.

Moldova 1-4 France

  • Hugo Lloris (£5.4m) – 90 minutes
  • N’Golo Kanté (£5.0m) – 90 minutes
  • Paul Pogba (£8.9m) – 90 minutes
  • Olivier Giroud (£7.7m) – 81 minutes

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud (£7.7m) continued to prove he is ready to step into the lone centre-forward role if Maurizio Sarri requires his services. The Frenchman registered a goal in 81 minutes against Moldova. However, his chances of being involved in Double Gameweek 32 are of course affected by the fact that Gonzalo Higuaín (£9.6m) has not been on international duty with Argentina.

Meanwhile, Paul Pogba (£8.9m) also got himself assist playing, as he usually does with France, in the deeper midfield pair of a 4-2-3-1 formation. That’s the preferred position of compatriot N’Golo Kanté (£5.0m), who has been playing much further forward for Chelsea this season but got 90 minutes alongside Pogba against Moldova.

Everton defender Lucas Digne (£5.2m) was an unused substitute for France but appeared to pull out the squad on Saturday after reports of an injury. That should see him miss Monday’s clash with Sigurdsson’s Iceland.

“Very happy with yesterday’s result but disappointed not to be able to continue on this gathering.” – Lucas Digne

International friendlies

Argentina 1-3 Venezuela

  • Juan Foyth (£5.0m) – 90 minutes
  • Salomón Rondón (£6.0m) – 72 minutes

Newcastle striker Salomón Rondón (£6.0m) continued his scoring run as he netted in Venezuela’s friendly win over Argentina. That’s good news for anyone fielding him for his next two fixtures, against Arsenal (away) and Crystal Palace (home).

However, it was a much more disappointing night for Tottenham centre-back Juan Foyth (£5.0m). He was deployed in a back-three that could not contain Venezuela’s one-man attack or five-man midfield. The youngster has started just one Premier League match for Spurs since Gameweek 19 and his role in this defeat will have hardly helped his chances of a return to regular game-time.

As has already been reported, Sergio Aguero (£11.8m) was not on international duty with Argentina, handing him a fitness boost for Double Gameweek 32.

Peru 1-0 Paraguay

  • Fabian Balbuena (£4.2m) – 90 minutes
  • Miguel Almirón (£6.0m) – 90 minutes

It was a disappointing opening to the international break for Newcastle man Miguel Almirón (£6.0m). He played in central midfield for Paraguay as they were beaten 1-0 by Peru, thanks to a fourth-minute Christian Cueva goal.

However, it was good for West Ham centre-back Fabian Balbuena (£4.2m) out since Gameweek 18, to get 90 minutes for his country.

AFCON 2019 qualifying

Nigeria 3-1 Seychelles

  • Wilfried Ndidi (£4.9m) – 90 minutes
  • Alex Iwobi (£5.4m) – 73 minutes

Alex Iwobi (£5.4m) operated in a number 10 role but did not play particularly well, losing possession several times due to poor passing. According to local press, the Arsenal midfielder struggled to link with the strikers and, despite having the right ideas going forward, could not execute them. He was replaced in the 73rd minute.

Wilfried Ndidi (£4.9m) fared much better controlling the pace of the game for Nigeria and won the penalty that saw Odion Ighalo open the scoring.

Sudan 1-4 Equatorial Guinea

  • Pedro Obiang (£4.3m) – 90 minutes

West Ham midfielder Pedro Obiang (£4.3m) had an enjoyable evening on Friday. Equatorial Guinea and Sudan had already been eliminated from AFCON 2019 qualifying so played out a dead-rubber match in which Obiang scored the fourth and final goal for his country.

A doesn’t matter but I’ve gone Rom and B is tricky. David more explosive, Bernardo will be more likely to play both.

I’d go Bernardo on the basis that two good fixtures and great chance of playing both

Is Foster a sure starter in the league or is there a chance he might miss one of the games and start FA Cup?

I think he's the best option if starting both followed by Ryan out of those 3.

Yeah it will depend on the pressers so not pressing button yet. Ultimately it’s about Dilva or Lukaku, and I fancy a fully fit Lukaku to our score Dilva over the 2 games. Obviously the downside with the 3-4-3 is a pants defence

    Kepa
    Azpi - Smalling - Duffy - Tomkins

Kaku is a good option but still prefer Rashford over him.
Rashford is the most nailed attacker in that United team.
If OGS decides to go Martial Rash Lingard as we played earlier, Kaku misses out.

Also it's the 3m difference in price you work with when you know Lukaku is nowhere gonna be your captain for 32.

      1. Christina.
        • 14 Years

        Lukaku in form
        No way OGS drops him

Rashy has never been the same since injury

As I said, Lukaku is a good option, no doubt.

But again, it's the 3m you work with which helps massively improving the rest of your team.
Plus I'd be more confident of Rash starting both games, not that he plays wide...he plays upfront alongside Lukaku when both of them start.
Plus I'm never gonna cap Lukaku.
Also who knows, Rash might take a pen or two.

I might be a bit biased here, because having Rashford helps my team a lot.

no problem. follow your gut. I just feel Rashy has lost the plot a bit. Lukaku finally has confidence and he is scoring and getting all the big chances.

I'm happy with my team with Lukaku in it at the moment. I feel he is gonna outscore Rashy, who no one will (c) either.

        I could have Rashford & Zaha in a 343.

But Kaku has looked much more dangerous than Rashford when they both play together.

I just don't think Lingard or Martial are worthy of a place in the starting 11 over Lukaku atm.

Looks good mate yeah. If Tomkins and Duffy concede cheap in game 1 then your not getting much there. Rest is great.

Yeah I agree about Tomkins & Duffy but then the only good alternative there is to get Laporte and sell D.Silva to get some other mid I don't want.

Tough situation to be in the choices definitely seem less for this DGW. A lot of 50-50 calls.

Yeah it's not like I'm not happy to have them in my team it's just there aren't really any better alternatives.

      Almost the identical team!

I have Luiz, Lindelof and Schlupp but the rest the same.

Toying with a 3-5-2 like Christina with Mili but that would mean dropping Lukaku to Rashford to afford the rest which I don't love

Yeah even I don't like the look of Rashford if Lukaku is fit.

I think Luiz will start both games honestly but there's a very slight risk that he might miss one. Don't think it's a huge issue if you can't afford Azpi.

I don’t want to say impossible, but I think highly unlikely. It’s not like last week where it was mid table and low table teams, this week it’s top 4 against bottom for the most part, and lots of highly owned players going head to head.

Looks good. Obviously waiting on pressers re Rashford, Zaha and AWB.

If you fancy United defence you can have Lindelof or Smalling quite easily, but I assume you know that and don't want them.

Settling towards this - know the risks with the Watford boys but if they start the Fulham game they could be exceptional value. Can only afford Ryan or Guiata in goal but they should be good for a few saves. Any thoughts?

Have played around with squad and managed to get Deeney to Batshuayi (or Townsend is possible)

Hmmmm just seen that Townsend has scored at the Etihad, Anfield and the Bridge this season. Seems written that a former Spurs player gets the first goal at the new ground.

Too much riding on crystal clear details on fitness/ availability in pressers this week!

I like my current FH draft on paper - is it too risky? I am chasing - have been languishing at c. 100k OR since a heavy fall from grace several weeks back. Anywhere you can easily see to upgrade? 0itb.

      Kepa
      Luiz, Lindelof*, Duffy, Schlupp
      Sterling, Haz, Pogba, Dilva
      Kun, Lukaku*
      (Hamer) (Stephens, Simpson, Quaner)

I do know that if I downgrade Lukaku to Rashford it frees up more (possibly safer) options - i.e 3-5-2 with Mili and 3-4-3 with Zaha but then it'll just look even more like everyone elses!

What do you reckon wise people?

          343 ZAHA definitely

people overhtinking this too much, zaha one of the best players around has finally found some form, 2 double digits in 4-5 weeks off the top of my head.....hes in for me. (depending on fitness)

          Hey man

I don't mind the shape of 3-4-3 but that basically means dropping Lukaku for Rashford which (obv unless Kaku is ruled out) is breaking one of the key elements of the team for me

Whilst Zaha could do nicely in HUD match, not sure I see him doing much at Spurs new ground - think Lukaku could outscore Rashford by more given recent form and higher ceiling.

          1. Amey
            • 5 Years

            Well my bad.
            I missed that part sorry.

Don't downgrade Lukaku unless he's ruled out.
I thought you can drop a Defender & get Zaha.

Stick with your team man. It's good as it is & i really hope Lukaku is fit

That's the case for me too.

        1. Don Kloppeone
          • 6 Years
          5 years, 4 days ago

Pretty much impossible although my gut feel is that a fit Lukaku outscores a fit Rashford atm quite significantly. But it’s really just a feeling.

Zaha could be decent vs HUD but unsure what I think he can achieve at the new Spurs stadium

          1. Karan14
            • 7 Years

I think I'm also leaning towards a fit Kaku in my team. I think he's a big differential with potential of a big score.

I think D.Silva vs Laporte/Ederson is also something I'm confused about but I think D.Silva wins it if he starts both.

Yeh that’s kinda the core differential-ish pick

For sure if I made that downgrade I could strengthen defence and/ or go 3-5-2 (with Mili) or 3-4-3 (with Zaha)

Yep, we're all sitting here with baited breath wondering which of Rashford or Kaku will be healthy enough to play. I've currently got Rash and Zaha in my line up but could always switch Zaha to Batman if he looks to wonky to play

      Kepa
      Luiz, Lindelöf, Laporte, Schlupp
      Pogba, Hazard, Sterling VC,
      Aguero C, Kane, Rashford

      fodder Dendoncker, fodder fodder

      My reasons for sticking bar any late team news;
Prefer Kapa, Laporte has higher ceiling than Ederson,
      Best midfield money can buy,
Three L defence, with OOP Schlupp.
Not keen on Higuaín & can afford Kane.
Most in my ML spunked their FH already & got a cracking 33 team to return 🙂

      Which would you prefer?

      A) Ederson - Azpi - Deulofeu
      B) Kepa - Luiz - Laporte
