Blanks for Hazard and Higuain in Chelsea’s Gameweek 32 opener

Chelsea and Cardiff City contested their first Double Gameweek 32 fixture on Sunday afternoon, as Maurizio Sarri’s side edged out Neil Warnock’s strugglers with two late goals.

There is nothing that Fantasy Premier League managers can do ahead of those two clubs’ matches on Wednesday evening, of course, but there was little to thrill owners of Chelsea assets ahead of their home match against Brighton in midweek, with the Blues very fortunate to emerge with all three points from this encounter in South Wales.

This was an underwhelming afternoon for many Fantasy managers who invested in Chelsea’s most-popular FPL players, as we’ll discuss in our Scout Notes piece below.

Cardiff City 1-2 Chelsea

  • Goals: Victor Camarasa (£4.5m) | Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.3m), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.2m)
  • Assists: Harry Arter (£4.9m) | Marcos Alonso (£6.4m), Willian (£7.1m)

Eden Hazard‘s (£11.0m) first benching in the Premier League since the beginning of November came at an inopportune time for those Fantasy managers backing the Belgian winger in Double Gameweek 32.

Hazard was thrown on as a 53rd-minute substitute at the Cardiff City Stadium with Chelsea a goal down but the talismanic winger went on to blank for the eighth time in 12 Premier League matches.

Owned by over 30% of FPL managers and three-quarters of the top 10,000 at the point of Saturday’s deadline, Hazard was also backed by close to 50,000 FPL bosses who were using the Triple Captain chip.

Having provided some ominous comments on Friday afternoon in his press conference, Maurizio Sarri confirmed to Sky Sports ahead of kick-off that Hazard and the hitherto ever-present N’Golo Kante‘s (£5.0m) demotion to the bench was fatigue-related:

At the moment, Kante has played 50 matches this season and Hazard 47.

They both played with the national team, Hazard for 187 minutes and Kante for 175 minutes and so I think that it’s time to rest.

Hazard did look lively on his introduction and caused a few nervy moments in the Bluebirds’ backline but didn’t register a single shot in his 37-minute showing.

The Belgian could still have had an attacking return, however, with Ross Barkley (£5.1m) blazing over one glorious chance that Hazard had carved out in stoppage time and Sean Morrison (£4.7m) narrowly diverting wide another low ball from the Chelsea wide-man after Hazard’s neat one-two with Marcos Alonso (£6.4m).

Hazard, at least, looks a very likely starter when Brighton visit Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

Pedro (£6.4m) and Willian (£7.1m) were chosen to flank Gonzalo Higuain (£9.6m) in the visitors’ three-man attack in South Wales and Sarri was also asked why Callum Hudson-Odoi (£4.2m) wasn’t given the nod to replace Hazard, suggesting the young England winger may instead have a chance of starting against Brighton in midweek.

Sarri said:

Callum is always in my mind when I have to decide the starting XI but today I wanted to put him in the condition to change the starting XI in the next match on Wednesday.

I had for all the international break in training, Pedro and Willian, so I thought it was right to start with them.

Having aggressively pressed West Ham United high up the field in their Gameweek 30 victory in South Wales, Neil Warnock’s side emulated the approach of many of Chelsea’s lower-league opponents of late and sat back deep early on, allowing the Blues plenty of possession but few clear-cut opportunities.

Curling efforts from Pedro, Willian and Josh Murphy (£4.8m) and a stabbed effort from Marcos Alonso (£6.4m), all of which narrowly missed the target, were the closest we came to a goal in a relatively action-free first half.

A tame effort from distance from Lee Peltier (£3.9m) was the only shot on target that either side managed in the opening 45 minutes.

Higuain’s movement was sporadically intelligent but there was little else to excite his owners in the first half, with the Argentinean striker not managing a single penalty box touch before the break as he drifted Kane-like into deeper positions.

Victor Camarasa‘s (£4.5m) well-taken goal shortly after the restart did little to spur Higuain or Chelsea into action, with the former Argentina international having only one attempt in the Cardiff box (a blocked one, at that) before being hooked for Olivier Giroud (£7.7m) in the 77th minute.

Higuain’s touch frequently deserted him, with his pass completion in the final third being the lowest of all of the Blues’ outfield players.

Not that there were many to impress in a Chelsea shirt: Barkley and Jorginho (£4.6m) were wasteful, while Pedro did little to enthral before his substitution in the second half.

Willian, who initially lined up on the left flank in Hazard’s stead, didn’t particularly excel either but he was perhaps the best of an average bunch, with no player on show registering more shots on goal or key passes.

It was indeed from the Brazilian’s excellent cross that substitute Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.2m) nodded in Chelsea’s winner in injury time.

Chelsea’s equaliser was controversial in nature: a well-offside Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.3m) nodding in Alonso’s flick-on from a Willian corner.

That was Alonso’s first attacking return since Gameweek 11 and perhaps overdue given that he has hit the woodwork on four occasions since that last contribution but it was another difficult afternoon for the Spaniard defensively, with Murphy getting plenty of joy down the Chelsea left.

Azpilicueta scored his first goal of the season but this was his fourth attacking return in his last seven Premier League appearances: no FPL defender has more since Gameweek 25.

FPL returns for Chelsea’s full-backs glossed over another unconvincing defensive performance for the Blues away from home and Sarri’s troops have no clean sheets in their last six Premier League matches on the road.

Antonio Rudiger (£5.9m) was also perhaps lucky not to see red for a professional foul on substitute Kenneth Zohore (£4.6m) before Chelsea’s winner.

The Blues are, at least, more solid on their own turf and are at home against Brighton in midweek and against West Ham in Gameweek 33.

No Premier League side has conceded fewer goals, shots in the box, efforts on target or big chances than Sarri’s troops when filtered by their last six home fixtures.

Sarri reflected on his side’s latest unconvincing display, which drew boos from the travelling support, in his post-match press conference:

We were lucky because in the first half we didn’t play very well. In the last period, we conceded a goal similar to Everton. Today we were able to react better. At the end, I think that we deserved to win.

I can understand [the away fans’ frustration]. Unfortunately, I am getting used to this. I need to work in order to change their opinion.

This defeat may have been a hammer blow to Cardiff’s survival hopes as the Bluebirds are five points adrift of safety and have a trip to the Etihad to come next, followed by a Blank Gameweek 33.

There were positive displays from some of Cardiff’s budget assets ahead of their Double Gameweek 34, at least, with cut-price midfielders Camarasa and Murphy giving a good account of themselves.

The Bluebirds’ backline weren’t often seriously troubled either and didn’t concede a single big chance until the final seven minutes of normal time.

Reflecting on the match, Warnock said:

VAR is needed, they need help. It would have taken ten seconds to sort out [Azpilicueta’s goal]. It is soul-destroying and I can understand the lads being down.

There was a penalty shout in the first half, the second half there was another one. The ref is in a really good position, it is almost not who you play, it is about who is in the middle and who has a flag.

On top of everything that has gone on this season. Rudiger should have been off.

What can I say about my lads? They were brilliant and it made for a great game. It kicks you in the teeth. We’ve had enough of them this year.

I am deflated because we have worked hard for this game and felt we could win it.

Cardiff City XI (4-2-3-1): Etheridge; Bennett, Morrison, Ecuele Manga, Peltier; Murphy, Gunnarson, Arter (Ralls 80′); Murphy (Mendez-Laing 89′), Camarasa, Hoilett; Niasse (Zohore 82′).

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): Kepa; Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Alonso; Kovacic, Jorginho (Loftus-Cheek 64′), Barkley; Pedro (Hazard 53′), Higuain (Giroud 76′), Willian.

WC in gw34 proving to be so difficult.

    1. Get Brighton in?
    2. DGW35 no stand out teams except for Arsenal
    3. You got to have players for post dgw35 too.

1.Double Brighton def with 34 in mind seems worth a try, but i might consider having a Foster for 35, Brightons double in 34 is not that good. Arsenal def could be one to consider alongside Wolves, Saints, Pool, Spurs def. Watford but rotation hell with Grac(e)ia. Some of this teams also fine fixtures afterwards.

2 .Arsenal have a nice double, City still are City so one or maybe two, Spurs have City away but as we saw vs Pool they can score away to them, and Brighton home is good. Kane and perhaps a defender (fixtures bar city are great), Watford have some potential good candidates in deeney/deulofeu, Southampton have some decent players as enablers, like Ward Prowse/Valery, not the best double but not the worst either. I would still have room for some Pool players, Mané and perhaps Firmino/Robertson?
      3. This could be the tricky part as in 37 and 38 a lot of these teams have bad or potential other commitments, cup final, but saving a tranny in 37 for a miniwc in 38 could get you a long way.
That said, a team with double Pool, at least Kane form Spurs, Kun or Sterling from City, Arsenal attacker, perhaps a defender, and some cheap options from the mentioned teams above is only overlooking Chelsea and United (and you can afford some of the cheaper options here if you like).

Massive hindsight alert, but here goes anyway. One of the big advantages to opening your mind up to all transfer possibilities (e.g. what can I do if I'm bold enough to not include an underperforming Pogba on my FH?), is that you sometimes make enough upgrades in other areas of your team that it almost doesn't matter when your main downgrade costs you a few points or not. It's very easy and safe to 'lock in' certain players then never really question their place in your team at all and try to work around them.

What am I on about? For me this GW, I hadn't even considered no Pogba until Friday. Then I actually thought about it and started wondering if Pogba was actually a better option than a fit Martial (gut feeling said he was and would start) or was it just the fear factor tying me to Pogba. So I replaced him Martial to see what I could do with the extra 1.7m, and it turned out I now had the funds for going Batshuayi > Rashford, Luiz > Azpilicueta, & Tomkins > Schlupp. In my mind all 3 of those other changes were significant upgrades to the players I actually preferred in those positions. The only 'sacrifice' for this would Martial instead of Pogba.

Once you feel confident that a 3 or 4 player swap like that is improving your overall team, it's easier to 'let go' of one particular player even if they have a high ownership and the scare you a little. Of course it helps if the replacement is a player from the same team, same fixtures, and with a genuine attacking threat of their own (positionally and from a recent stats perfect, Martial was even more of a threat than Pogba).

If Pogba had outscored Martial by a 13 points I would still be even so far on the whole deal. Martial outscoring Pogba puts me up by 20 points overall. 20 points and it only became possible once I considered losing that Pogba safety net. Before that, I was accepting that I couldn't afford what I actually wanted - Rashford, Azpi and Schlupp.

Every chance Martial is now injured and Pogba scores in the next game of course. Who knows, but I think it's interesting to try and look at the game with this mindset. It's never as simple as X vs Y player. It's about how you can maximise potential in ever position, not just one.

i had similar problem with Pogba but my upgrade would have been from rashford to higuain-) my problem (what i´d expected tbf) was the wealth of money i had. And in hindsight, abandon my gut feeling on PVA-) , i knew he was the best shot in Palace def but we know he scores 3-5 goals from april to may..

but your general thought i do think is what people often overlook in their assessment on their own team, it´s the combination that counts. On the other hand some luck and circumstances lead to some point swings like azpi-luiz etc that can´t be no other than sheer , yes luck.

Tough luck there, I know how you feel about PVA. Those close calls are always frustrating when they go so spectacularly against you.

Yes, overall I'd say this is the biggest gap a lot of managers not happy with their ranks could consider working on. Getting away from the group think, exploring more options and caring much less about a player vs player comparison in isolation.

Totally accept that. Anything can happen now, but the points scored is not entirely the point of my post. I'm talking about whether it's worth getting 3 upgrades (in my mind) at the cost of 1 downgrade (debatable that it even is a downgrade in the Pogba vs Martial case). I think managers too often completely shut out possible options due to being wedded to a certain player and refusing to even consider the alternatives.

But you can say that about almost any player in your team ? What could you have done without the Sterling ££££ and gone for B Silva ? Did you run that choice ?

You probably had many drafts and options that did not do well, but you only remember the one you didn’t go for that did well.

Bats over an injured Rashford ? Luiz attacking threat over Azpil? Tompkins over a rotation risked or possible fullback slot Schluop ? And Pogba over an injury scare Marial? ... I think all those decisions were sound and something you would do again with the same information. With hindsight info that all were fit and Schlupp would start OOP then it’s a different issue with different criteria imho 🙂

You have to start somewhere with building team, and it’s pointless reconstructing it after the fact.

Of course you can, but I'm saying it about Pogba specifically, which is relevant because he's such a highly owned shield. And the player most on FH would admit they didn't necessarily even think was going to do well, but they just didn't really think it was worth the risk of not picking him anyway.

Obviously one can't make this point about every single transfer decision, but in the Pogba example I think it's reasonable.

I am sure many did the same thing, remove a player and see how the extra cash could be spent generally, multiple times ... it’s not as if it’s some unique thinking process, it’s just what we do?

I removed Sterling (worried he would be tired & rotated) and actually replaced him with D Silva to spend the cash elsewhere ... I brought in Ederson & Azpil. I also looked at an alternative of Hazard to Pedro in the same manner (did that move for my Scouts pick challenge)

Personally I thought Pogba would haul this double, especially if others at Man U were injured and he would have a more advanced role - called it incorrectly probably.

Given Pogba's ownership in the top 10k this GW is 86%, not so sure you can completely dismiss it by saying "it's just what we do". I'd argue that picking popular highly owned players like Pogba out of fear and not genuinely considering whether the funds could be spent elsewhere is actually what we do. How many on FH do you think made Pogba-less drafts and seriously thought about it? Or Sterling-less drafts?

This ‘fear’ factor idea has been generated on the likes of FFS and relates to a tiny percentage of the game ... was Pogba really selected out of fear by the masses or selected because he is good value and in anticipation of a haul, in competition with other players in his general price bracket ?

It’s my impression that you are really overthinking things and dwelling on what you didn’t do or what you might have done ... we make choices and sometimes they turn out a success and sometimes they don’t, it’s as simple as that and analysing what you considered, might have otherwise done but dismissed is pretty pointless really

Seems like we have very different approaches to the game, which is fine. If 'overthinking' is what I'm doing differently this season, I'll probably keep doing it.

Actually no, we have very similar approaches, as I said I looked at what replacing Sterling with Silva world give me across my team on FH and actually did it, no Sterling on FH .... our approach only differs regarding overthinking it with 20/20 hindsight vision when the choices don’t work out ... it’s what we did do and not about what we didn’t do, as Jonty often says 🙂

true that, often FOMO takes over and it gets tough to drop a particular player even if we know that we can multiple upgrades with the cash. In the end, its overall score that matters, not individual score.

That's right. I think when it's a popular captain option you have to approach it differently and protect yourself. For example, not having Augero, Sterling and possibly even Hazard this DGW would have ben overthinking it. But Pogba? Nobody's captain so only so much he can punish you. And unlike the others, there were cheaper attacking alternatives in his own team if you did need the funds elsewhere, which it seems like many did.

It's team & SV specific imo. Pogba non-owners are a bit lucky too that he is now moved into pivot by OGS (discussed about it after the match).
So he could not affect the game much in FPL terms.
He can still haul against Wolves if plays slightly upfront.

Having said that I'd take him out atm 😉
Also not going to get him in my WC team. Playing in pivot 2 will reduce his appeal massively imo

I won't own him again this season, I don't think. Too many negatives and too many alternatives. Plus not owning him can almost be the differential.

I didn’t need the upgrade as I had Rash+Azpi+PVA from those teams.

But in all honesty, I toyed with Pogba -> Martial as I sold Pogba long ago. His 40+ ownership percentage scared me, and the fact ALL my ML rivals had him: shield.

Perhaps that's mostly true, but not always. I discuss almost all my transfers in advance with a friend / rival, and we tell each other whether we think a move is a good or bad idea in advance, then accept luck will play its part. In this case I'm not even really trying to focus on the players and the points or whether you believe they were upgrades or not; what I'm saying is that I personally believed they were upgrades (obviously, or I wouldn't have made the changes, so it's not just in hindsight). And I bet a lot of other managers, if you took fear out of the equation, would like at that in advance of the games and say 'yes, I would much prefer Martial, Rashford, Azpi, Schlupp to Pogba, Bats, Luiz, Tomkins'. But if you don't even remove Pogba in the draft stages and explore your options, you'll never find out.

Ha, that would certainly throw the debate wide open. Or just destroy my credibility. But I'm really not suggesting Pogba can't do well tonight. Of course he can. All you can do is spread your funds the best way you see fit, but my suggestion is that if you could do enough good things with the money saved then Martial represented a strong alternative for this GW. If there was 0.1.m difference between them, this point would be moot and I've have got Pogba myself. It's the price difference that you have to weigh up, and looking at FH teams around for 2 weeks I'd say this thinking doesn't come into it for many. It's the fear of a highly owned player.

Well that's another issue. What's the point of building TV over the season if spending it on FH becomes difficult? Completely ignoring price rises and falls, and making all my decisions on deadline day, has been a key component of my season. Now some of my rivals who told me earlier on how their higher TV would come to the fore, have not even spent it all on FH.

It is a bit frustrating to see. But then again, it's basically advice to competitors so if it gets ignored it's no big deal. I just think some managers could improve at this game if they dug a little deeper instead of going through the motions and hoping for the best.

The point is still valid. Covering a premium player with a decent team mate allows you to upgrade 2 or 3 other players. Don't listen to the so-called experts - COVERAGE WORKS! It has clearly worked with Mane and Salah this season, for example.

Coverage can work for sure if the players from the same club offer a relatively similar threat over a period of time. Good coverage is not getting Gray instead of Vardy from Leicester. But good coverage has definitely been Mane for Salah, as you point out, and many other examples. I think the key is to know that your alternative selection also has a lot of potential in the team to be involved in goals, particularly based on the recent trends and likely formations. With that in mind, I do think most would agree that Martial playing in the front 3 has a similar chance of scoring points as Pogba at the moment. Maybe not before when Pogba was flying, but now in this isolated GW, it seemed a decent enough gamble.

Even then, the direct comparison between Pogba and Martial is not even the point I'm making. It's all about what you can get for your money elsewhere by taking a small risk on coverage.

I think it's fair to say many managers didn't even consider going without Pogba on Free Hit, and that's all I'm getting at.

I declared it as much in the first sentence. But I am actually trying to dig much deeper than the points scored in this specific example. It's much more about trying to think outside the box sometimes to get the most out of your own team. I've seen plenty of comments from people about not really wanting Pogba but deciding to play it safe anyway. So the point is not "oh look, Pogba blanked!", the point is "if you were already uncertain about Pogba, did you tinker with the possibilities of not including him and would your team have looked better on paper, before the GW started?".

But I can see now that it's pretty much being taken for a 100% hindsight post, so that's life.

In all honesty, I think this is over-egged. You are drawing
general inferences from a very specific event.

Pogba is a far better option than Martial LONG-TERM because he will start every game whereas Martial won't. And, of course, you aren't usually making multiple transfers unless you are taking multiple hits. So, what you have written here applies very specifically to the FH, though it doesn't say so.

In that respect it doesn't really go far enough, perhaps, in underlining how unique the FH is and how selecting a FH team requires very different thought patterns to how you'd manage a team the rest of the time. There are only 4 occasions in the whole season when you are making a decision based on ONE WEEK ONLY (the others being immediately before a wildcard and GW38) and the only one when you have unlimited transfers.

So you really need to get out of your normal thinking with the FH. Your example about Martial is perfect, because what would usually put you off about him doesn't apply if you are confident he will start the games in FH week. In other words, the FH should be entirely opportunistic. And another key element with the FH is that YOU DON'T NEED TO SPEND YOUR WHOLE BUDGET and in many cases will be better off it you don't. Obvious but strangely hard to do because it goes so much against the grain.

You misunderstood me man, I meant that being on a FH means not thinking as you normally would the rest of the season, like Ruth NZ said above.. getting the blinkers on to focus on this week in isolation and taking short-term punts that wouldn't otherwise be viable is the way to go!

Can’t argue with that too much. I should have said it was essentially a Free Hit situation. Long term, especially earlier in the season, these decisions are hard, but at this point I think it’s possible to evaluate your options better, especially if you’re chasing points.

Obviously in a long term situation l wouldn’t want Martial over Pogba. There’s a reason I have never owned the former. But in a DGW situation it did make a lot of sense.

Good call and well done on Bilva. Hasn't worked for me with Dilva, but I still maintain that gambling on extra City attack was the way to go if you're an aggressive player. I just picked the wrong Silva. I feel like City defence was a very safe but not overly ambitious choice, and I was 100% always going to pick either Dilva or Bilva. Got the wrong one, that's how the game goes, but regardless I think triple City attack was a viable strategy and it's certainly worked out well for you! Good luck with the rest of the gameweek.

This is an interesting point, I can see why you're in the top 50. To counter the point above a strategy is only valued/spoken about if it pays off I'd like to share my take on this:

My open mind thinking led me to consider going without Kane on my high TV FH team due to Spurs' form/fixtures and what I could do with cash on a player I wasn't (C). I looked at the stats on attacking teams/players & decided that Kane/Jimi/Lindelof/Ederson > Higuain/D.Silva/Smalling/De Gea had a higher ceiling & in my mind better potential.

Based on fixtures/underlying stats I could see Higuain matching or beating Kane, and fancied D.Silva to get enough attacking pts to counterbalance Ederson vs De Gea (especially if Utd kept a CS against the two worst teams for shots over the last 4 gws).

Obvs this hasn't worked: I was minutes away from 2 CS against Watford, picked the wrong Silva & gog a Smally OG/Jimi assist. I don't think D.Silva/Higuain will outscore Kane/Ederson tonight either (If they play), but I think I'd have regretted missing out more if I'd not done the moves & it had gone the other way.

Diop is the emergency there, but I fancy a positional change with Hazard more than a like-for-like change to Azpi

So... Hazard. Also depends on if you want Pogba back on your wildcard or not, as losing all that value for just one week of Trollzard (I'll most likely cap him, btw) would leave a bitter taste

Seems a lot of FHers not happy with their strategy and FH team.

But I’d just like to remind them, there are people out there like me who played FH in the BGW31 and it was an absolute disaster. Every player bar Mané (who I owned anyway) was a 1 or a 2.

To be fair, TC Kun this week has gone well so far and I still managed to get 9DGWers for this week. But next week I’ve got 5 players and only 1FT, whereas many players who played FH this week will have a full team out next week.

If I could go back, I’d definitely switch my strategy.

I also think this was the strategy because of weird arrangement of BGW & Dgw this season.
I'm happy with my FH atm. Gw31 was pitiful with only mane returning. Now have 12 for gw 33 with 1 FT in hand so hopefully can get a decent score.

Gaffer, not sure that I agree. You needed to have players who play in GW33 - eg Southampton, who oddly have come into a bit of form. And CP, who luckily for me got kicked out of the FA cup. If Aguero plays his second game I think your use of the TC will pay off.

That makes no sense, ‘in my opinion’ is always spoken by the person who’s opinion it is. Arguably it could still be tautology but that ignores the existence of facts. It’s also often used because it shows humility and is therefore polite.

Things like "player X is injured" is a fact and anyone can understand that.

not sure writing or saying those words shows any kind of humility or politeness. I used to write IMO in every reply of mine but recently I have been questioning it. Doesnt feel logical, maybe in society, it is considered as sign of humility.

33: Have a full team without any transfer
      34: WC
35: BB, DGW players and 2 Liverpool so I can TC one of them in 36
36: TC Salah/ Mane against Huddersfield.

      (B)
      33: Save
      34: Taking hits for BB
      35: Taking hits for TC
36: WC for the rest of the season.
I like A but TC'ing in SGW seems wrong.

      Please help. A is without hits but downside is I can't C a DGW'er.

With Liverpool again top of the table with a 2 point lead on City, but having played 32 to City's 31, the title race is fully on.

As for the top 4 race, the Spurs loss and the Chelsea win mean that Chelsea, Arsenal, United, and Spurs are all on either 60 or 61 points, though Arsenal have played one less game.

In the last 5 Spurs have 4 losses and a draw, while Arsenal have 4 wins and a draw. United and Chelsea have 3 wins, a draw, and a loss.

It's likely that all these teams drop points going forward and we have a close top 4 race - who do you think makes it in the end, and why?

What are the FPL implications of these races at the top? Does it mean having high Team Value could be more important this year than some others? Does it mean you'll look more to the top 4 for FPL players down the stretch?

          Yes.
Picking up player's from Top 6 is little risk free this season (at least till gw36), last year dgw 37 was a flop because of the race for title & top 4 was over too early.

I think Manchester United & Spurs will make the top 4 alongside Pool & City.
Chelsea attack is poor & Arsenal away form might be the reason to miss out on the CL.

I'm going to Target Top 5 teams + Southampton/Wolves/Watford/Brighton till the end of the season as they all have something to play for

One think I am sure of is ManU were shocking and have been for 3 games now.
With the 4 teams you mention I think Fixtures must be the deciding factor.
WC 34 so 3 Citeh, 3 Pool, Arsenal 2 Spurs. Probably 3 Brighton for 34 fixtures

The title race is maintained at the top for stadium attendance. Cardiff to do justice soon, and we all know who will lift the trophy. EPL is becoming Formula 1 and very predictable indeed.

This is so far from the truth. Stadium attendance where did you get that theory from? A flat earth conference? Clubs make very little from stadium attendance compared to TV revenue. I don't think it's of much relevance to them. Certainly not enough to maintain a title race which distracts from a highly lucrative champions league run.

And the battle between 3rd and 6th is looking to be highly unpredictable and is somewhat unexpected.

Cannot see Chelsea making it. Arsenal have the best fixtures on paper - Arsenal to finish third and Spurs fourth.

The race goes on for a long time yet, it’s close and all to play for.

Team value is nice but not so important as people like to believe (I rarely spend my full budget in the Norwegian Fantasy game) .... at times we are blinded by higher priced players when choosing our teams when good value budget players (Mili) may be better and can ourscore higher priced (Pogba) players quite easily

Teams have to win games - draws not good enough. Most the contenders keep conceding silly goals.
Plan atm is to move money out of defence except for Liverpool.
Concentrate on attacking players. Possibly even loading front 3.likes of Auba and Firmino alongside kun appealing.

My biggest hope is that by some extraordinary fluke, on the last day of the season, Cardiff, Brighton, and Burnley all require something to better one another, and City still need to win to get top four, and United and Arsenal are also involved in top four.

            GW38
            Brighton v City
            United v Cardiff

FPL managers tend to have tunnel vision and ignore all other competitions.

There is no point in looking at the title race and top-4 race without also looking at CL & EL. All those teams are still in Europe. And although it is convenient for managers to believe that the PL has priority, it doesn't. Not at this stage.

It is probable that Liverpool would take the PL over the CL but Klopp will never throw a CL QF. For City, doubtless Pep would take the CL and 2nd in the PL rather than the other way around (though they aren't mutually exclusive). Spurs only have the CL left, though I expect them to lose the QF and then make a late resurgence in the PL once they can't win anything (again). Arsenal & Chelsea (especially) are in a situation where the EL is their only chance of a title and probably represents their safest route into next season's CL.

GW34 falls right between the Europe QF legs and could well be a rotation bloodbath at the top teams. Especially for United if they are still in the game after the 1st leg, but it's likely to affect them all to some degree and in many cases is likely to spill over into DGW35 as well

Liverpool will probably be the least affected as they have no DGW to accommodate and also have a couple of judiciously-placed Friday evening fixtures which will ease their schedule even if they make the CL SF. Whoever has arranged the fixtures has helped Liverpool as much as conceivably possible.

Wouldn't it make more sense to go 0 or 1 Pool (as only SGW 35) and trhe use FT's to bring them in after?
Thinking 3xCity, 3xArsenal, 2x Spurs, 2xMU for WC with WAT/BRI/SOUTH fillers for BB.

                3 x city (sterlng + 2)
                2 x united (rashford + 1)
                2 x arsenal (kola +1)
                2 x brighton (duffy + 1)
                2 x wolves (Jimenez 1)
                2 x watford (Defeul +1)
                1 x spurs (kane)

I may keep a bournemouth player and mane from sgw instead of 1 of the +1s when wildcarding in 34

If you don't consider his exploits vs Cardiff, for a moment.

                  24 matches
                  4 goals, 4 assists

Even Doucoure has the same number of goals, with 2 assists more.

For those who used FH this week, how does points score compare before and after?

            Mine:
            FH score 58
My team would have scored 49 (plus Rondon to play) had I not used the chip

Guessing a score around 100 would be a successful FH?

              FH score : 69 with 11 player's to go.

Actual team score : 45 with Jota & Doherty as dgw player's only.

100+ is a good score on FH i guess.

67 on FH vs 45 for me, plus all the DGWers to come (I would have owned 5 in regular team).

Very happy so far, free hit more than doing its job. And I've got a full 11 plus a benching headache for GW33. All looking pretty good for a big finish to the season - and hopefully that top 20 spot I've been targeting for months now.

I don’t think it is a fair comparison though, what transfers would you have taken ?

Original team 37 with Hazard, Higuaín, Luiz to go, but should add a captain and who knows what a Free Transfer would have been .... probably Vardy to Kun (-4 due to £££) so let’s call it 55 ish with Kun (c) for Higuain

FH team 61 with Kola still to go this week, plus 10 doublers

57 vs 31 with hopefully 10 extra to play again (had pogba and ház already so not including them in the 10).
Find it a difficult comparison to make as was building a 31/33 side for a while knowing 32 was a FH.
Personally feel you have to look at value of all chips together to judge whether they were a success as people play them at different times. Eg was a poster on here in sept/Oct who freehitted and got over a 100pts which beat his original team by about 70pts and top 10k by about 40pts.huge or rise. Shame we don't know his 31&32 scores.

50/50, his replacement scored but they looked a lot better when he came on.

            BGW 33 team:

            Boruc
            Robertson VVD Azpi AWB
            Brooks Hazard Salah
            Vardy King Rondon

            Fabianski Snodgrass Pogba* Doherty*

            * = blank

            1 FT, 1.0 ITB

I know Boruc is a doubt, but Fab can replace him and not sure its worth using the FT on the keeper?!

Other than that, what change(s) should I make??

            Thanks.

Shows how much Hazard's stock has fallen.
We are all looking elsewhere for captaincy, I even prefer Wilson over him atm.

          • Eze Really?

            Choices:
            Went Luiz over Aspi,
            Went Barnes over Perreira
            Went Wilson over Digne
The FFS scoutcast put me off Milli
I thought Rashford and Martial not fit so kept Pogba.
Was going to do PVA over Doherty but worried on the money I would lose.
Went Keeping Wilson over injury concerns to Zaha.
            Horrible choices.

Robertson to Schlupp 6 point loss so far.

              Zaha
9 returns in the last 10 matches and seems better away from home.

            Sterling Mané Pogba Son Deulofeu
            Aguero Jimenez Deeney

I'm going to avoid pogba. Manager was discussing that he can play in pivot 2. Not much threat from there.

              So Pogba + Deeney to Rashford + Jota/Mikhi ??

Unsure about Pogba, but really don’t like the alternatives that much. Maybe Ward-Prose and use the money to upgrade elsewhere.
