Martial and Lukaku fit to face Wolves as concern over Pogba’s form grows

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has declared Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial fit to play in Manchester United’s second Gameweek 32 fixture against Wolves on Tuesday.

Martial limped out of United’s 2-1 win over Watford on Saturday, while Lukaku was an unused substitute having picked up a foot injury over the international break.

Speaking to the club’s website on Monday morning, Solskjaer said:

Anthony and Romelu will both be ready for tomorrow, definitely, unless they break down in training today [Monday] but it looks good, yeah.

The now-permanent United boss also ruled four players out of the trip to Molineux but will welcome Victor Lindelof back into the first-team fold:

Victor has had a good few days of training now so he’ll be ready. Apart from that, [Matteo] Darmian and Eric [Bailly] are still out. [Antonio] Valencia is still out and Alexis Sanchez is still out. But it’s a good strong squad.

There is, of course, nothing that Fantasy Premier League managers can do ahead of United’s second Gameweek 32 fixture but Saturday’s underwhelming display against the Hornets may have added to existing doubts about some of their Fantasy assets going into Gameweek 34 and beyond (both the Red Devils and Javi Gracia’s side blank in Gameweek 33).

Of particular concern will be Paul Pogba‘s drop-off in performances and underlying statistics and the Frenchman is the initial focus of our Scout Notes below.

Manchester United 2-1 Watford

  • Goals: Marcus Rashford (£7.6m), Anthony Martial (£7.2m) | Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.9m)
  • Assists: Luke Shaw (£5.1m) | Isaac Success (£4.6m)

No penalty box touches, no chances created and one 30-yard shot that was blocked: Paul Pogba‘s (£8.9m) key numbers in the win over Watford on Saturday won’t have changed the growing opinion that the Frenchman’s Fantasy appeal is not what it was.

Underlying statistics don’t always tell the whole story but those watching the match will have voiced similar concerns over Pogba’s below-par display, which brought to mind some of his inconsistent, infuriating performances under Jose Mourinho.

We can’t be too hard on the France international after his unsustainable purple patch between Gameweeks 18 to 26 but his tail-off in key performance indicators isn’t a one-week anomaly: Pogba’s rate of penalty box touches, attempts on goal and key passes under Solksjaer has dropped by 50% or more from Gameweek 27 onwards.

The thought that the return of the defence-minded Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic (both £5.0m) might aid his cause didn’t pan out either, with those two midfielders flattering to deceive against the Hornets at Old Trafford.

Pogba had initially lined up alongside those two players in a 4-3-3 but Watford’s early dominance prompted a reshuffle from Solskjaer midway through the first half, with the Frenchman subsequently playing alongside Herrera in a 4-4-2 diamond and the hitherto poor Juan Mata (£6.1m) brought in off the flank to play as a “number ten” – a role that Pogba’s owners would love to see him regularly occupy.

Solskjaer’s post-match comments about Pogba’s positional flexibility – and a possible deeper role in the future – only furthered concerns.

The Norwegian said:

Paul is important to us. We couldn’t keep the ball today and, as I’ve said, 50-50 possession at home, you’re a bit disappointed with that.

But Paul has been away and he’s played two games for France. Of course, he’s playing a bit deeper for them so that might be something we have to think about as well to get him more involved in the game and make him dictate games more for us.

That’s from game to game. As you can see, Paul can do both. He can attack and defend.

As mentioned, Herrera and Matic weren’t any better, while Mata proved that he is not a right-winger in a 4-3-3 with an awful showing early on.

Even Anthony Martial (£7.2m), who followed up his own rebound to put United 2-0 in front, didn’t really impress despite his eye-catching penalty box touch and “big chance” counts (two of which were admittedly accounted for by his goal).

The lively Marcus Rashford (£7.6m) and Luke Shaw (£5.1m) did shine, however, and it was those two players who combined for United’s opener when Rashford ran on to his team-mate’s superb through-ball to dink a finish over Ben Foster (£4.6m).

Solskjaer said:

I thought Rashy was fantastic, he gave us the energy that the others lacked.

Luke has got so much in his locker and I can’t wait to see it blossom. He’s exceptional going forward and his sharpness defending, as well. I thought he was top class until he got his cramp.

Shaw avoided collecting his tenth booking of the season but still has one match to go before the threat of a possible two-game ban passes.

With Victor Lindelof (£5.1m) omitted for personal reasons, Phil Jones (£5.1m) and Chris Smalling (£5.6m) lined up at centre-back and those two defenders had to be at their best to repel a Watford attack that registered 20 shots to United’s eight.

Solskjaer suggested that injuries had plagued his preparations for Saturday’s match and affected United’s performance:

The first 20 minutes, we started so slow and sloppy. You could see that we’ve had players out with injuries. We’ve not really been able to train them that much. It’s one of them first games after the international break: you’re looking forward to them, but you know they might be a potential banana skin.

But after we scored – great goal, by the way – I thought the rest of the first half we played some great counter-attacking stuff. We defended well, we had to because they were dominant, but I thought Chris and Jones especially were fantastic and kept us in it.

Watford deserve a lot of credit and a handful of their players would have cemented their places in Fantasy managers’ thoughts for the Hornets’ appealing double-header against Huddersfield and Southampton in Gameweek 35.

Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.9m) scored Watford’s consolation after a neat one-two with substitute Isaac Success (£4.6m) but even before that point the Frenchman impressed with his all-action display, dominating the United midfield and popping up frequently in dangerous areas: Doucoure had more shots than anyone on show at Old Trafford and registered more penalty box touches than Troy Deeney (£5.9m).

Many FPL managers will overlook Doucoure, of course, given that there is a cheaper, “out of position” option in the Watford midfield.

Gerard Deulofeu (£5.7m) lacked end product in Manchester on Saturday but was still a lively presence in the Watford attack, registering more penalty box touches than any other player bar Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) in Gameweek 32 thus far.

Roberto Pereyra (£6.0m), creator of a match-high five chances, and budget midfielder Will Hughes (£4.9m) were also prominent in and around the United area even if their final ball, like Deulofeu’s, was often found wanting.

Still, to go away to Old Trafford and dominate the hosts was a positive sign for easier tests ahead.

Gracia said of his side’s display:

We had a good performance. It’s true, it wasn’t enough to get the points but I’m happy with the performance. We need to finish better, we need to improve in the last metres. We created chances, we had more shots, more shots on target and more corners. We dominated and played a lot of time in the opposition half.

The first goal was a counter-attack and the second was a moment when we played well. But when you don’t kill the game against these teams with high quality, you know you can lose in any moment. We tried until the end. We believed but it wasn’t enough.

Fantasy managers who invested in Watford’s attacking assets may not reap the rewards from an appealing home fixture against Fulham on Tuesday if Gracia continues to rotate his squad ahead of the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday.

The Watford boss chose Saturday’s match to rest his entire back four from the FA Cup quarter-final win over Palace a fortnight earlier but his front six players were all unchanged and the likes of Deeney and Deulofeu could well be handed a breather at Vicarage Road on Tuesday.

Gracia said of his team selection:

In all the games, I made changes, but I have a good squad. I have to choose different players because in eight days we are going to play three important games. I know all of them are ready to compete, to play. I only have to choose.

The likes of Success and Andre Gray (£5.9m), then, could be handed a rare league start against the relegation-threatened Cottagers.

Daryl Janmaat (£4.9m) hobbled off after 55 minutes of this encounter and will be assessed, with Gracia potentially providing an update in his pre-match press conference on Monday afternoon.

Manchester United XI (4-3-3): De Gea; Young, Smalling, Jones, Shaw; Herrera (Pereira 65′) Matic, Pogba; Mata (Lingard 65′) Rashford, Martial (Rojo 75′).

Watford XI (4-4-2): Foster; Janmaat (Femenia 56′) Kabasele, Britos, Masina; Hughes (Success 81′), Doucoure, Capoue, Pereyra; Deulofeu (Gray 73′) Deeney.

After yesterday's controversy in the Cardiff game I'm sure that the issue of VAR has been done to death on FFS, but in the cold light of day I would be interested to hear your thoughts on what VAR might do for the enjoyment of the fantasy game.

VAR suits all clubs, no matter how big or small, because they are ultimately businesses and businesses like certainties. The more predictable the better for them. It was/is therefore always a matter of time before it was implemented. However, I think it would diminish the enjoyment of a football match for non-neutrals and especially those who have an interest in fantasy football.

People talk about VAR at the World Cup being a success, and on the whole it was, but they are mainly thinking about the final tally of occasions where a ruling was 'correctly' made, one way or another.

There is another element to it though. VAR decisions are not made instantly, and I don't think there ever could be. During the WC I found that each game had a significant number of phantom passages of play where play took place only to be pulled back for a much earlier infringement, or there was the spectre of this happening which meant that you could never really look forward to a counter-attack following a possible foul at the other end. I remember one particular passage of play in one of Denmark's matches, where a very promising attack was cut short for a VAR penalty review against them. As an Eriksen owner, I found it very frustrating and it took a lot of the enjoyment out of the match.

Eventually there will be counter-attack goals ruled out because something happened at the other end which went to VAR review. From a fantasy perspective this would make an already somewhat stressful hobby into a genuinely nerve-wracking one! There is already a slight delay once a goal is scored where you wait to see if it is going to be ruled out for offside or some minor infringment you didn't notice at the time (and the reverse, that couple of second when you hope that that player you don't own has his goal ruled out for similar reasons). VAR will magnify this element, dilute the gratification and extend the disappointment should a decision go against one of our players.

So, VAR - perhaps it's needed, perhaps it's the only way of doing things fairly, but will we enjoy FPL as much as a result?

I agree. But do you think it will take some of the enjoyment out from an FPL perspective? I'm genuinely interested here.

I'm an Azpi owner, will I think as much about my jammy goal (positive) as I did about the phantom Brunt assist from last season (negative)?

I think we forget about the good stuff more readily than we do the injustices, so maybe VAR will actually increase our happiness!

Yep it will be like the smoking ban ...we won't miss what its being used to try and eradicate ..but yeah fpl will be more stressful for sure and pen takers will be in huge demand because more will be given.

I'm a rugby league fan and even with the technology we have to assist the refs, we still get some decisions wrong. Its embarrassing to the game when it happens. The fourth official in RL is not always right.

People make the rugby comparison but that sport is so much easier to apply it to. Infringements are often clearer to discern while in football cause and effect almost becomes more fuzzy the more you look at it.

I'm all for VAR to be honest.
The delays are occasionally frustrating, but also adds a little extra drama to the occasion.
PSG v Utd recently, and also Madrid v Ajax - when they spent an age trying to decide if the ball when out for a throw before a goal was scored.
I imagine it's more frustrating in a ground, not having the benefit of TV replays we're getting at home.

      1. Make Arrows Green Again

For me it's not the delays, it's the counter-attacks specifically. I find it so jarring, almost immersion-breaking when we don't know that a promising attack is 'for real', or whether it just occupies a constructed decision-making space, if that makes sense.

This may sound mad, but hear me out (I think this would completely solve the problem for me): VAR should only pull play back once the ball goes out of play EVEN IF a goal is scored in the subsequent passage of play, so:

        0-0

Team A attacks. Team B fouls in the box. Team B 'gets away with it', counterattacks and scores. Goal stands. Penalty is awarded.

        1-1 (potentially)

When Team B fouls then just stamp on the poor bugger while he's down while no-one is looking so he can't get back to defend.

Blimey, I think that could complicate things even more, and if you see the comment below, the poster is spot on, a team scored from a counter attack, and it was disallowed as the play was brought back for a penalty.

We see promising counters stopped already for head injuries, I've seen many times a team defending a corner, look to go on the break and the ref stops play because someone took a knock winning the defensive header.

It would never happen but it would, I think, take a lot of time pressure off the decision makers and we, the spectators, would know that the next passage of play is 'for real'.

That said, yes, great points - it does happen already with head injuries etc.

If it results in a goal but the review adjudged it as a penalty - goal ruled out and penalty given (like in the clip above)
If it results in a goal and the review shows no penalty - goal stands

Something like this played out in the Dutch league or cup I think it was. Team A is attacking in, corner or fk I think it was, Team B defends, counters, scores. The VAR team were analysing footage while the counter took place, pulled play back, penalty to Team A. Everything played out super fast and then correct decision was made. You couldn't have a better advert for how effective and well executed VAR can be watching it. Forget what the scoreline was before this played out but I've a feeling Team B we're winning 1-0, counter gave them 2-0, VAR penalty ended up with it being 1-1. Amazing stuff and proper order.

I'm playing Fantasy Eredivisie, and i have Odegaard in my team. He scored the 3-1 in that game. He is a differential in my league so i was cheering of course. Then they go back 1 minute of play for a foul at the other end. Goal disallowed, penalty awarded. 2-2 To answer the TS question if it can influence the joy of the game. It's true that a misfortune sticks with you longer, you remember those. I have 2 goals and 1 assist ruled out by VAR for Odegaard now. He does however also take some freekicks so he will have gained some assists after VAR-intervening, but i don't remember those at all. But that's the case with everything, and sometimes i think the painful moments are what we're doing it for too. You need downs to get ups.

I'd be very interested to see what happens to the likes of Zaha in the brave new world. More assists and more bookings perhaps? I think at the moment refs are tempted to award neither a pen, nor a YC, so they do nothing. In the future they will have to make a decision perhaps?

I won’t enjoy it as much. I enjoy the instant moment of gratification when one of my players scores. These goals will be chalked off at a semi-regular basis meaning I will lose that feeling as I await VARs decision. I understand why people in the game want it but as a neutral I don’t care about right or wrong decisions in sport. The unpredictability and chaos is part of the appeal. Those few raw seconds of emotion will be lost and I think it’s those moments that make sport worth watching (and FPL worth playing).

If done right then it's nothing but a positive - hawkeye in tennis was met with scepticism, but once embraced it simply became another aspect of the game, building suspense before an often big decision was confirmed. I don't know how VAR will develop and if it can achieve something similar, but I think the only way to improve it is to try it and get on with it.

I didn't like VAR decisions in handballs leading to penalties in the world cup, if you watch a handball from different angles in slow motion it never looks like the hand is in a natural position. I also think they shouldn't show the normal tackles in the box in slow mo as a slight touch looks like a foul slowed down.

For offsides it's great though imo.

Also, FPL should change the rules to the same as in fantasy world cup, fewer points from a penalty scored (maybe 3 points and no difference if it's a mid/forward/defender) and 2 points to the fouled player and no assist should be given.

In NHL they even have commercial brakes. And sometimes football is slow and dull (remember yesterday).

Stakes in football are too high for unneeded serious human errors. Cardiff relegated for that is not fair imo (Azpi owner).

Correct decisions are good. Positives vs negatives 9-1.

As we near the end of the season when taking hits is considered the most risky, I'd be interested in hearing how many hits people have taken and if they think that has had a positive, neutral or negative effect on their rank.

I think mine have been a bit hit and miss but generally positive and I've take 8 hits; four minus 4s and two minus 8s. I don't think of myself as hit averse though.

I've taken a couple of -8s when I've already had two transfers available, meaning I could change up 4 players. These have both really paid off for me this season, but I find the trick is to resist the temptation to view this as a cure all. I reckon -4s at best level out over the season - but a couple of well timed -8s operating as mini-wildcards can really do wonders for your team.

I agree. I favour an early mini wc instead of using the wc early on so I can save the wc for Christmas schedule planning.

I’ve taken a few. Best game week of the season was after a minus 8. I feel like they’ve worked in the long run and NOT taking hits has hurt me - ie not doing Auba to Kun gwk 25 because I wanted to play ‘safe’ and not take hits

Pretty reluctant this year to take hits.. so far only -20 in hits, and can't really see me doing any more.
-8 of that was the whole taa injury gate when I brought him in early, and moved him out before the gw started due injury!

      1. Shineonme
        • 7 Years
        5 years, 24 days ago

I've done 12 hits this year so far and after taking the -4 off for each transfer hit (48pts ) I still gained 38 more pts by doing the hits than I would have got if I never did the hits. So I'd be 1,848 overall pts instead of the 1,886 I am now. Hits definitely work if played right and of course if they pay off. The last two seasons hits for me have definitely paid off.

P.'s. Don't want to boast but I still have 11 players to play in dgw32 so that 1,886 pts I am now. I'm hoping to be around 1,920 after dgw32 has finished. My ranking at the moment is just over 37,000 like it to be around 30,000 if I end up with 1,920 total after dgw32. Still have my TC And WC left

I've taken 48 points of hits this season, far more than normal.

For the most part they've paid off for me, but I don't like doing it.

i have taken 15 hits, and it works ok for me i guess. I think that well timed hits due to form/loss of form/fixture swings actually is not a problem. The problem is when you take stupid hits because someone is "yellow" or something like that. Mine little blip was in GW 9 where i tried to do a risky move in order to get in front of the template but when it backfired i just reverted it next week, other than that my hits usually pays off, which in reality is incalculable because you´d have to reconstruct what you would do without the hits in the next gameweeks and often moves the next weeks are connected to the hits you made and so on. So for me, the hits are more tools i sometimes use when i see something that i can take advantage of the next week etc. Inside top 10k and since this is the way i played since my second season i don´t really know how it would have been if i didn´t take hits, but i do, and the patient game does not suit me. Could do but I’d back Fraser to score more then the keeper I could afford and Felipe may be injured. West Ham tend to do better defensively in London derbies historically I think, some save points for Fab maybe?

Hmm tricky to squeeze them both in. Team will look like this after swapping Pogba out for Hazard:

        Dubravka
        Robertson / Chilwell / Luiz
        Salah / Mane / Hazard / FAnderson*
        Barnes / Vardy / Wilson

I always said when a lot of people on where were saying Sterling and Aguero won't play against Cardiff that at least one of them will start. Pep wouldn't drop Aguero and sterling at this at she in the league. He's to near to winning it, he wouldn't want to blow it now by dropping his best two players.

Well i'm following the FH31, TC32, WC33 and BB35 chip strategy. For GW33 i've got 10 starters and considering having 11 (Auba or Hazard) before removing them for a -4pts ahead of GW34 (it's basically, I want Kane and Sterling but to have both in a WC would only give me 9 players, so i'll go without one of them to give me 10 players and use my FT in GW34 to bring the other one in. Or I go without both of them and bring them both in for a -4pts).

I would also have 10DGW players in GW35 but also 3 Liverpool players (car), Brooks (FUL) and Chilwell (whu) so those single week players still have great fixtures.

Something else to consider, i'm probably going for triple Arsenal this week (as they have a nice double in GW35) which could be a slight differential as not many of the BGW31 & BGW33 teams have Arsenal players (because they didnt play in BGW31 so no one targeted them).

Yes var is absolutely needed. Fairness should be the most important element in a game. My rival had azpi and instead of getting 1 point like he should have, he got a massive 10 points. That's a huge 9 point bonus he got for a clearly offside goal. We will enjoy football more if we know decisions are fair. If u follow the Bundesliga, u will see how fair the games are.

Bournemouth on the beach already. No motivation no fpl points maybe 😕

what has Kane done? 😉 Auba and Kola are decent options, you're probably right about the third

no real interest in Kun still tbh, maybe right about Bournemouth but not sure

great shout about Southampton, forgot about those players (prob only a defender instead of Morgan) - cheers for input!

Is this for 34, or immediately? If it's the latter, I'm not keen on Arsenal midfield. Would want some Spurs (or an easy route to them) for the double and run-in.

Interesting, i'm also on a WC so nice to compare as no one else seems to be WCing.

              I'm on:
              Alisson - Ryan
              TAA - Kola - Chilwell - Dunk - Valery
Mane - Sterling (maybe Hazard for one week only) - Son/Pogba (depends how next games go really) - Brooks - McNeil
              Auba - Laca - Jimenez

Auba to Kane with 1FT is almost a definite. I'm pondering on having Hazard (plus cash) as well to give me 11 GW33 players and take a -4pts on Auba and Hazard to Kane and Sterling.

With regards to your draft, i'm not sure about Salah - do you he's currently justifying his price?

Savage enough to make it an intense period, I think City injuries will creep in during April as they wont rotate for those games.

And if they do rotate, I reckon they drop points.

That Palace game is going to be mass rotation and coincidentally it is the week when everyone plans to wildcard.

City and spurs would get fed up seeing each other's faces 3 times in 2 weeks.

Don't think any team worries city tbh. They will aprouch any game the same way no matter who the team is. City will go for the jugular against any team. Me personally I think they will win all tthey're ramaining league games

Just a few thoughts on the above article (well written by the way).
One penalty and all will be forgiven for Pogba.
Secondly has Rashford not a better nickname than 'Rashy' ?
Rashy? It sounds like something you would go to the doctor with.

I have sources to suggest Aguero 'could' miss out Wednesday, nothing concrete

Would be a god send for me if he does miss out, as if he hasn't already done enough damage to me having not captained him

Ryan, Duffy and Camarasa for DGW34.

Then Camarasa > Hojbjerg for 13 DGWers plus Robertson & Mane vs Cardiff for DGW35

Liverpool play Huddersfield in GW36. If bench boosting in GW35 when Liverpool don't have a second game would you consider losing some subs to keep your pool players or forget Liverpool players altogether and take hits to get them back in GW36?

Play your bench type players in your starting 11 (that have a 2 games) and put your Liverpool players on the bench to bench boost them ... it will be the strongest bench you have had all season 😉

Don't overestimate DGW's. It's rare those players play 180 mins anyway, and form comes first. Pereira and Robertsons 8 pointers fit in quite well among my BB squad. I went without Chelsea defenders, which have some of the best fixtures. And yes pereira didn't deliver any points recently, but at least he showed attacking threat every match.
