Top-six nemesis Jiménez strikes again as Wolves complete comeback win

Wolves proved once again that they thrive in matches against the top Premier League sides.

Those who showed faith in Nuno Espirito Santo’s side for Double Gameweek 32, despite a fixture with Manchester United that looked hard on paper, were rewarded on Tuesday night.

There were attacking returns for Wolves key attacking players, which served only to further boost their credentials for more Double Gameweek action on the horizon.

Wolves 2-1 Manchester United

Goals: Diogo Jota (£6.1m) | Scott McTominay (£4.2m)

Own goal: Chris Smalling (£5.6m)

Assists: Raúl Jiménez x2 (£6.8m) | Fred (£5.4m)

Raúl Jiménez (£6.8m) is well on his way to earning a place in the Fantasy Football Scout team of the year after yet another decent score against high-quality opponents. The Mexican had more shots in the box than any other player at Molineux on Tuesday night and created more chances than any of his colleagues too. From yet another match with impressive statistics, Jiménez claimed two assists, the first for setting up Diogo Jota (£6.1m), the second for having the last touch before Chris Smalling (£5.6m) put the ball into his own net.

It is against the big opponents that Jiménez has done well, which means that Fantasy managers must remember to flip the Fixture Difficulty Rankings when considering him. Arguably those that are harder on paper are the ones in which the Mexican is likely to deliver. Jiménez’s latest display means that he has now been involved in nine goals in 10 league appearances against the top six this season, scoring four of his own and assisting a further five.

The link-up of the two forward players Jiménez and Jota has also proved pivotal in recent times. The latter has now scored six goals in as many matches at Molineux in all competitions. The last two he has netted in the Premier League have both been assisted by Jiménez too. That does suggest viability to the idea of owning both of them for Double Gameweek 35 when Wolves host Brighton and Arsenal, as they have the potential to be the two players involved in their side’s goals. A good way of turning Jiménez from a shield into a “sword”: combine him with Jota.

“It’s very good (the relationship between Jiménez and Jota). It’s what I call society, the two players, the more time they spend together, every training session and in the competition, things come out. Mutual knowledge is important but knowing each other’s tasks and moments to go is important and I’m pleased for them.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

On Tuesday night, we also got some insight into how Nuno likes to enact his rotation policy ahead of big FA Cup matches, for future reference. With two games in Double Gameweek 32, one away at favourable opposition and the other a much sterner test at home, he opted to play the stronger line-up for the second one rather than concentrate on the theoretical “easier” fixture. It also seems likely that the former goalkeeper felt his first XI would be able to take more momentum into the FA Cup semi-final against Watford if they played the closest fixture to it, rather than were rested for it.

That’s probably why Jiménez started this game instead of the trip to Burnley, and the same for Matt Doherty (£5.4m) who came back into the side to face Manchester United in the place of Adama Traoré (£5.1m). The only other change saw Ruben Vinagre (£4.3m) come in for Jonny (£4.3m) at left-back.

It was a disappointing evening for owners of Manchester United attacking assets. Firstly, Marcus Rashford (£7.6m) missed the game with an ankle problem sustained in the win over Watford on Saturday. That meant he was another high-profile Fantasy asset condemned to just one fixture in the Double Gameweek, and a score of just seven for the round.

“Marcus (Rashford) got a knock again, it’s a different ankle, it’s not the same ankle luckily. He’ll be sorely missed today. Hopeful Rom(elu Lukaku) can do the job though.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

That meant Romelu Lukaku (£10.8m) came back into the starting line-up after missing out against Watford and he led an experimental attack. The Belgian was deployed as the only member of the front line in a 3-5-1-1 formation with Jesse Lingard (£6.7m) behind him as a number 10. Unfortunately for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, four players registered more shots than Lukaku at Molineux, including one defender and a holding midfielder.

The width was provided by Luke Shaw (£5.1m) and Diogo Dalot (£5.3m) who sat either side of a five-man midfield, which featured Paul Pogba (£8.9m), Fred (£5.4m) and Scott McTominay (£4.2m) at its heart. Shaw, deployed on the left, picked up his 10th yellow card of the season and is now banned for the next two Premier League matches. The former Southampton man will return for the second match of Double Gameweek 35, which sees Manchester City come to Old Trafford.

It was another match in which Pogba felt too far away from the action to justify his inclusion in Fantasy squads. With Nemanja Matic (£5.0m) on the bench and Ander Herrera (£5.0m) out with an injury, the Frenchman had to drop into a deeper role alongside Fred and McTominay in midfield. As a result, eight players completed more successful passes in the opponents half than Pogba, who had just one shot and none in the box. Ironically, he actually had the joint-highest number of touches inside the box and created more chances for Manchester United than any other player but crucially had an expected goal involvement (xGI) score of just 0.18.

Manchester United’s biggest problems stemmed from playing Ashley Young (£5.7m) as the third centre-back in their back-three. He was deployed there alongside Smalling and the returning Victor Lindelöf (£5.1m).

It was a tactic that initially worked, as it seemed to negate Wolves’ formational advantage, by matching up to it. However, Young eventually exposed himself as the weak link in the chain and once the hosts realised they could exploit him the momentum of the match shifted.

Wolves were able to equalise in the 25th minute and looked the more likely to score after that. In the end, Young paid the ultimate price for his struggles with his position, collecting two yellow cards for cynical late tackles and was sent off. He now misses the Gameweek 34 match against West Ham and will return against Everton in Double Gameweek 35. In the end, it continued a worrying statistic about Manchester United’s ability to play with a back-three. In the 2018/19 season, they have used that set-up in defence on six occasions in the Premier League, according to the Manchester Evening News, and have no wins from those matches.

“Ashley’s (played in that position) before against PSG away. He did okay, I felt. I thought Ash gave us the outlet of when you have three centre-backs to go forward, created some moments down that side but… I thought he did what he was asked to do. When you’re on a yellow before you’re always in danger if you go down, hit the ball first and follow through, it’s a yellow card again. Probably a bad decision [by Young] but in the heat of the moment he reached the ball but it was just a little bit too high.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-5-2): Patrício; Boly, Coady, Bennett; Vinagre (Jonny 76′), Moutinho, Neves (Saïss 84′), Dendoncker, Doherty; Jota (Cavaleiro 73′), Jiménez.

Manchester United XI (3-5-1-1): De Gea; Lindelöf, Smalling, Young; Shaw, Pogba, Fred (Jones 65′), McTominay, Dalot (A Pereira 84′); Lingard, Lukaku (Martial 73′).

One didn't play, another got own goal, third one seems to have lost the plot. 1 point from three players.

I sure hope the rest of my dgw squad will save the gw today, however nothing surprises me anymore.

My comment seem to have been denied by mods so another try without swear words:

Young was in my mind, however basis of my strategy has been to avoid players who get **** in their mouth by birds.

    Maddison or Tielemans?

Maddison any time goalscorer odds: 5/2, Tielmans is 6/1
But Tielemans has been better recently.

I'm struggling to see why there isn't much hype around Tielemans right now. He's unreal as a player and he's returned/been involved in 5 goals in his last 5 games. Fantastic form and when you consider the two games before that were his first two for the club you could probably put those performances down to teething issues/warming up to playing with the team.

Ok thanks everyone, probably going Pogba to Maddison as a shield against my rival (although he's still got Pogba but he can keep him #headinmadrid), unless someone else that I've got gets injured tonight but thinking about it, I don't know who better I would replace them with anyway for gw33.

It’s been a weird season. Can see how people have struggled to make moves up the rankings. I’m almost the opposite that I don’t feel I’ve done a lot right but still done ok.

    Boruc
    Valery, Kola, AWB, Azpi
    Hayden, Tielemans, Mane
    Vardy (c), Wilson

One man short from starting XI

    Leno, Laporte, Sterling, Pogba, Aguero
    Maybe Pogba > Ozil?

Thoughts on which WC team is better? Planning BB in GW35 and 1-2 hits (for example, Hazard to Eriksen/Alli and move out Maddison) to optimise the team by then.

    A.

    Ryan - Foster
    Valery - Kolasinac - TAA - Rudiger - Digne
    Mane - Hazard - Fraser - Sigurdsson - Maddison
    Aguero - Rashford - Jimenez

    B.

    Gunn - Foster
    Valery - Kolasinac - TAA - Janmaat - Duffy
    Mane - Hazard - Fraser - Sterling - Maddison
    Rashford - Lacazette - Jimenez

    C.

    Gunn - Foster
    Valery - Kolasinac - TAA - Keane - Bennett
    Mane - Ozil - Fraser - Sterling - Maddison
    Rashford - Kane - Jimenez

Tbh, I dunno what conclusions I take from them. It’s inevitable that there is going to be wrong choices in hindsight. Sometimes fine margins, last season my vice captain out scored my captain by a considerable margin, so was in the right ball park, and for the most part felt my calls were correct pre deadline

    Whom should I bench?

The amount of people that use the form argument but then leave Salah in their teams?

Granted Pogba doesn't play this week and Salah does but just some food for thought.

    Morning folks,
Planning ahead and wanted to get your thoughts. I’ve got no WC left so working out what transfers I need to make. Plan on doing:
Rice, Hazard, Boruc -> Duffy, sterling, Ryan in gw34 for -8
King, Perreira, McNeil -> Jiminez, Kola, Delefeou for -8 in 35
Would give me 8 extra games in total and a stronger team anyway. Seem reasonable? Will have this for 35:

    Pat / Ryan
    Robbo / Kola / Duffy / Bednarek / AWB
    Salah / Mane / Sterling / JWP / Deulofeu
    Aguero / Jiminez / Wilson

Would bench boost in 35 too and triple captain sometime after

Is there really an alternative? I could not do Boruc to Ryan and save -4, but that could lose me 4 games on bench boost. Rice to Duffy is definitely worth a -4 over two game weeks. Each transfer looks like it should pay its way back and I wouldn't need to take any others as only transfers after that would be in 37 (2 free) and 38 (1 free)

Hits are to be expected. Costs less id there are 2 games.
Pat DGW35 Ryan 34 and 35 so maybe Ryan a slight luxury.
Robbo Mane Salah all good for Single GW's
Hazard has a good Burnley fixture so Keep.
Duffy and AN other for Brighton 34/35

Gw 35 all 3 good choices.

Nice to see Bilva being mentioned in a few WC drafts.
He's playing on RW for Man City & Pep says its 10 + Bilva so he can be a wonderful pick till the end of the season.

Kun, Raz & Bilva too much of City till the end of the season ??
    If yes which 2 you'd pick ??

Yes, bilva is the only viable option for me. I see the rest of squad being a massive risk for rotation baring zinchenko.

They have a big fixture list with a big 2 weeks coming up so I see sterling and kun being rested/rotated.

If your chasing you ML leader unwound stay away from city nd look at other players.

DGW35 is alot more prosperous imo. There is less template and more options. My current draft is

          Foster Gunn
          Kola Trent vvd dunk Doherty
          Mane Eriksson duele jwp bilva
          Kane jimi laca
          1m itb

I see arsenal Southampton and possibly spurs as good differentials.

Lets face it, Cieh are the best side in the world most probably. Bilva an inexpensive way into a great side and Pep loves him. If I only took 2 Citeh, Bilva would be one of them.
Sorry bud but any united asset has become a liability.

          1 Watford
          1 Wolves

Perhaps a little too much money in attack, and not sure a Sterling/Aguero doubble-up is neccesary given how tricky fixtures they have for GW35.

I'm going with Kane - Laca - Jimenez up front. Gives me plenty of cash to spread elswhere.

    Current team for GW33:
    Guaita
    Robbo - TAA - Diop - Yedlin
    Salah - Fraser - Brooks - FAnderson
    Wilson

Not playing: Doherty, Jimmy, Lloris, Pogba, Kun

    Should I:
    A) Pogba + Kun OUT --> Tielemans + Vardy IN ? Would leave me with a massive 5.9 ITB.

With the end of the season looking what advice do you have for people in various positions of their mini leagues.

Winning a league by a fine margin and looking to maintain. 2nd place and looking to overtake. Mid table and looking for a last minute miracle, etc.

For those of us dead-ending our teams after GW33, who is the best 1 week punts for all the positions?

I'm looking at replacing Anderson with, Tielemans, Sigurdsson or Fraser for example.

Which teams will provide the best enablers to a BB influenced WC? Arsenal, Watford & Southampton look to have the best fixtures, is a triple up on the cards from any of these teams?
Conversely, United, City & Spurs are competing at the top of the table but have less than desirable fixtures. How many of their players should we be targeting?

On the beach teams: With 2 of the 3 relegation places confirmed, Newcastle & Bournemouth are highly unlikely to go down. However they both have excellent fixtures until the end of the season and are capable of generating a good amount of points or are they potentially a trap? One more win should see Burnley, Southampton and Brighton join this group.

Talking point. We haven't all followed the chip template. I have successfully used my bench boots this week and less successfully used my free hit last week. I need to wildcard this week.

How much focus should be put on fielding a full team this week? How much focus should be on he DGW? Are 6 Saints & Arsenal essential to cover both?

      a) Teams - on the beach teams. How much emphasis do people put on this? Is it team/manager dependent? For example, if a team has decent fixtures but nothing to play would you ignore? i.e. Bournemouth

      b) Players - one week punts. Many will have 1FT for GW33 before WC in GW34. Therefore a broader discussion (rather than just transfers at end of the show). Who is the top player people want out of their 'hangover' team? (i.e. Feliepe Anderson...) Who are the top transfer targets for GW33 alone? i.e. Maddison vs Tielemans

      Spurs

Is a triple up on a GW34 wildcard a good move?

From GW34 they only have two away games left (although one is at city).

Player: Jimenez, 34% owned and 32 points in last 3 GWKs
Team: Watford and Southampton are teams which are discussed lesser but their players will be in huge demand for places on our bench for the run in
Talking Point: Gameweek 35 BB early planning. With Team Values being decimated after the FH and WC which are the players you want in early to protect team values.

"On the beach" - a phrase that's cropping up now more and more in FPL forums... but as FPL managers, how good are we at actually assessing the motivation behind players, teams and managers? What should we be looking out for, and are recent performances/the eye-test necessarily the best indicators?

The same questions apply to players under transfer speculation, teams battling relegation, and teams left in European and/or cup competitions.

Would love to hear the casters' opinions especially on relegation threatened teams - they've had all season to play better, are they really all of a sudden going to improve or just be limited to the odd outlier result e.g. HUD beating WOL?

I've seen this statistic when 2 teams have something to play for, tendency to be a low-scoring game.

When only 1 team has a stake, high-scoring.

No correlation to who wins though. I've stuck by this finding since.

If the focus is BGW33, I think player is Lacazette, team is Leicester, and talking point is whether it's worth a hit in a BGW to upgrade players if you can already field a starting XI. (I'm tempted and have money ITB to take a hit to upgrade Felipe Anderson to anybody and Barnes to Lacazette.)

If you're going to do a look ahead to GW 34, WC and DGW35...

Player: Kane (again, he has "ok" form but doesn't justify the price). Great Spurs fixtures to closer out the season, but with Kane in a team you have to sacrifice a lot elsewhere.

Team: Man City (who can you really trust to play in their attack besides Sterling and - if healthy - Aguero)... so pick one of them and defenders for the run-out. Also Liverpool. Could we go without (especially on WC) in GW 34-36 because there are better value options and fixtures are crowded... or is that too risky?

Talking point: WC use... how much to invest in DGW players and your bench (assuming many will BB in GW35)? Or a teaser for the future... what's the latest, greatest thinking on TC chip use for those of us planning for deploying in GW36-38. Thankfully Andy Carroll doesn't appear to be an option (and I'm a WHUFC fan).

Saturday morning - finally, all those months of planning will stand me in good stead, and this free hit will shoot me up the rankings.

    Tuesday - Red arrow.

Last year, in GW 34 or 35, I was one point away from top 10k with all chips except TC.

I planned meticulously for the blanks and doubles. By the end of the season I was at nearly 40k.

DGWs are good but they are never as good as you think they will be, especially in the modern heavy rotation era.

I was at 75k when I started planning for the blanks and doubles in GW26.

      I'm currently at 176k.

55 points after Young's red card last night and dropped 30k thanks to Jiminez Jam from everyone else in my ML's (has cost me all season and my own fault for not getting on him) this is the worst DGW in recent memory since there are so many going to be rested/rotated tonight too.

    All the planning absolutely fruitless!

Did you not get him in due to rotation worries?

I didn't pick him because of that. Thought Rashford was the smarter choice, he'd definitely play both games...

To be honest Rashford was the smarter choice. Just bad luck.

Well I think it was the wiser move. The injury was out of your hands. Much like Aguero captain was the right choice.

Lol that was one of the last transfers I made on my Free Hit.

Delighted I didn't lose those 2 extra points!

My Lindelöf pick doesn't feel quite as bad as it was at 14:01 last Saturday. My alternatives were Duffy and Doherty and neither of them covered themselves in glory either.

    Palace to lose 2-0
Sane and Sterling to be rested
    Aguero already out
    Chelsea to lose 1-0

Would give me a 2nd half of the DGW score of 8. The way this week is going it feels like it's going to happen.

Think Sterling will play because Aguero is out. Predict Jesus, Sané and Sterling front three.

Best option out of these for GW34-38?

    A) Rashford
    B) Deeney (Double up with Deulo?)
    C) Lacazette
