Top-six nemesis Jiménez strikes again as Wolves complete comeback win

Wolves proved once again that they thrive in matches against the top Premier League sides.

Those who showed faith in Nuno Espirito Santo’s side for Double Gameweek 32, despite a fixture with Manchester United that looked hard on paper, were rewarded on Tuesday night.

There were attacking returns for Wolves key attacking players, which served only to further boost their credentials for more Double Gameweek action on the horizon.

Wolves 2-1 Manchester United

Goals: Diogo Jota (£6.1m) | Scott McTominay (£4.2m)

Own goal: Chris Smalling (£5.6m)

Assists: Raúl Jiménez x2 (£6.8m) | Fred (£5.4m)

Raúl Jiménez (£6.8m) is well on his way to earning a place in the Fantasy Football Scout team of the year after yet another decent score against high-quality opponents. The Mexican had more shots in the box than any other player at Molineux on Tuesday night and created more chances than any of his colleagues too. From yet another match with impressive statistics, Jiménez claimed two assists, the first for setting up Diogo Jota (£6.1m), the second for having the last touch before Chris Smalling (£5.6m) put the ball into his own net.

It is against the big opponents that Jiménez has done well, which means that Fantasy managers must remember to flip the Fixture Difficulty Rankings when considering him. Arguably those that are harder on paper are the ones in which the Mexican is likely to deliver. Jiménez’s latest display means that he has now been involved in nine goals in 10 league appearances against the top six this season, scoring four of his own and assisting a further five.

The link-up of the two forward players Jiménez and Jota has also proved pivotal in recent times. The latter has now scored six goals in as many matches at Molineux in all competitions. The last two he has netted in the Premier League have both been assisted by Jiménez too. That does suggest viability to the idea of owning both of them for Double Gameweek 35 when Wolves host Brighton and Arsenal, as they have the potential to be the two players involved in their side’s goals. A good way of turning Jiménez from a shield into a “sword”: combine him with Jota.

“It’s very good (the relationship between Jiménez and Jota). It’s what I call society, the two players, the more time they spend together, every training session and in the competition, things come out. Mutual knowledge is important but knowing each other’s tasks and moments to go is important and I’m pleased for them.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

On Tuesday night, we also got some insight into how Nuno likes to enact his rotation policy ahead of big FA Cup matches, for future reference. With two games in Double Gameweek 32, one away at favourable opposition and the other a much sterner test at home, he opted to play the stronger line-up for the second one rather than concentrate on the theoretical “easier” fixture. It also seems likely that the former goalkeeper felt his first XI would be able to take more momentum into the FA Cup semi-final against Watford if they played the closest fixture to it, rather than were rested for it.

That’s probably why Jiménez started this game instead of the trip to Burnley, and the same for Matt Doherty (£5.4m) who came back into the side to face Manchester United in the place of Adama Traoré (£5.1m). The only other change saw Ruben Vinagre (£4.3m) come in for Jonny (£4.3m) at left-back.

It was a disappointing evening for owners of Manchester United attacking assets. Firstly, Marcus Rashford (£7.6m) missed the game with an ankle problem sustained in the win over Watford on Saturday. That meant he was another high-profile Fantasy asset condemned to just one fixture in the Double Gameweek, and a score of just seven for the round.

“Marcus (Rashford) got a knock again, it’s a different ankle, it’s not the same ankle luckily. He’ll be sorely missed today. Hopeful Rom(elu Lukaku) can do the job though.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

That meant Romelu Lukaku (£10.8m) came back into the starting line-up after missing out against Watford and he led an experimental attack. The Belgian was deployed as the only member of the front line in a 3-5-1-1 formation with Jesse Lingard (£6.7m) behind him as a number 10. Unfortunately for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, four players registered more shots than Lukaku at Molineux, including one defender and a holding midfielder.

The width was provided by Luke Shaw (£5.1m) and Diogo Dalot (£5.3m) who sat either side of a five-man midfield, which featured Paul Pogba (£8.9m), Fred (£5.4m) and Scott McTominay (£4.2m) at its heart. Shaw, deployed on the left, picked up his 10th yellow card of the season and is now banned for the next two Premier League matches. The former Southampton man will return for the second match of Double Gameweek 35, which sees Manchester City come to Old Trafford.

It was another match in which Pogba felt too far away from the action to justify his inclusion in Fantasy squads. With Nemanja Matic (£5.0m) on the bench and Ander Herrera (£5.0m) out with an injury, the Frenchman had to drop into a deeper role alongside Fred and McTominay in midfield. As a result, eight players completed more successful passes in the opponents half than Pogba, who had just one shot and none in the box. Ironically, he actually had the joint-highest number of touches inside the box and created more chances for Manchester United than any other player but crucially had an expected goal involvement (xGI) score of just 0.18.

Manchester United’s biggest problems stemmed from playing Ashley Young (£5.7m) as the third centre-back in their back-three. He was deployed there alongside Smalling and the returning Victor Lindelöf (£5.1m).

It was a tactic that initially worked, as it seemed to negate Wolves’ formational advantage, by matching up to it. However, Young eventually exposed himself as the weak link in the chain and once the hosts realised they could exploit him the momentum of the match shifted.

Wolves were able to equalise in the 25th minute and looked the more likely to score after that. In the end, Young paid the ultimate price for his struggles with his position, collecting two yellow cards for cynical late tackles and was sent off. He now misses the Gameweek 34 match against West Ham and will return against Everton in Double Gameweek 35. In the end, it continued a worrying statistic about Manchester United’s ability to play with a back-three. In the 2018/19 season, they have used that set-up in defence on six occasions in the Premier League, according to the Manchester Evening News, and have no wins from those matches.

“Ashley’s (played in that position) before against PSG away. He did okay, I felt. I thought Ash gave us the outlet of when you have three centre-backs to go forward, created some moments down that side but… I thought he did what he was asked to do. When you’re on a yellow before you’re always in danger if you go down, hit the ball first and follow through, it’s a yellow card again. Probably a bad decision [by Young] but in the heat of the moment he reached the ball but it was just a little bit too high.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-5-2): Patrício; Boly, Coady, Bennett; Vinagre (Jonny 76′), Moutinho, Neves (Saïss 84′), Dendoncker, Doherty; Jota (Cavaleiro 73′), Jiménez.

Manchester United XI (3-5-1-1): De Gea; Lindelöf, Smalling, Young; Shaw, Pogba, Fred (Jones 65′), McTominay, Dalot (A Pereira 84′); Lingard, Lukaku (Martial 73′).

    WC 34 draft:

    Foster, Ryan
    TAA, Kola, Holebas, Duffy, Valery
    Sterling, Mane, Bilva, Jota, Deulofeu
    Kane, Laca, Jimenez

    Thoughts?

I found Ryan/Gunn to be the best keeper partnership until the end.
I'm also likely not to pick TAA, but plan to transfer him in ahead of GW36.
Concerned about Laca rotation risk, but otherwise can't argue with any of it.

Saints fan on here seems to suggest so.
I'm happy to take my chance with him, and at least I'll still have a playing keeper should he be dropped.
Rather whu in 37, and HUD in 38 from Gunn.
Than che 37, WHU 38 from Foster.
          ...and he's 0.3m less.

Something to keep in mind because I do like their fixtures and that 0.3m could be handy.

            Good point mate.
            But Foster has better dgw.
So I'm thinking about Ryan/Foster for 35 & then get Gunn in 36 for Foster.

Not good to waste FT on Keeper ??

His DGW is slightly better I agree, but I'm not overly concerned with new/wat to be honest.

..and yes, I don't want too many 'planned' transfers as something always goes wrong, so far my only planned transfer will be TAA in after the DGW35.

I like it. Seems a good idea to spend that little extra on 8th attacker.
Deulofeu was subbed off at HT last night. Is that something to worry about?

Im not sure about Laca. Hard to guess how Emery will rotate around EL.
Also they only have 2 home games left and 4 away games which is a problem as they are pretty bad away from home.

The only appeal now is that he is on penalties.

Whatever spurred him into life when Ole took over has now gone and his stats have fallen off a cliff.

I think lots will keep him out of fear so his ownership will be fairly high but I think this is a great area to try to ‘beat the template’ and get rid of him. Risk vs reward

      I have same question.

I have 11 players for GW33 but I could dump Pigba now and use him to improve my 11

Would also avoid losing further value when I sell as he’s likely to drop between now and GW34.

      I could do:
Barnes, Pogba > Vardy, Fraser (-4)

  17. bench boost for every gamew…

Maybe it´s because i´ve done fairly decent from GW27 but people seems to put this plan with bunking up on BGW pre 31 and 33 and then FH in 32 down as a failure, but my view on it is different. Most of my transfers bar Anderson (lost 9 points to Rich, and that was a bad decision/transfer and should be accounted for that and nothing else) went well leading up to it (yes a bit of luck but that´s a part of the game throughout the season, not just specific for this time).
BGW was not the worst, but that was more due to bad decisions than planning (and again not doing a a better job in identifying the best players, some simple moves from Salah to Mané cap, and Maddison instead of Anderson in 27, that´s 30-40 points in difference). And FH in 32 were again all about picking the right players, and not so much about wrong strategy/plan. Odd circumstances like injuries and such things cannot be applied in ones conclusion imo, as whatever planning you do this kind of events is unforeseen either way.

I agree. It was never really about all those double fixtures in 32, it was more about the blanks for me.

I made up decent gorund in 31 by having close to a full team, I hope for a small arrow in 32, and I should get another green in 33. Three greens arrows in three weeks at this stage in the season is worth two chips for me.

Definitely. Luiz v Azpi, Young v Shaw, Mili v Deulo, all of these can make a big difference and there is too much luck involved in individual gameweeks to be able to pick the right ones all the time.

I still don't get why people choose azpi than luiz. Luiz has more goal threat than azpi.

Azpi has more assist threat and is slightly more nailed on to play (there is talk that Luiz can’t play 2 games in 5 days)

Strategy means nothing if you get unlucky.

I had 11 good players for gwk31 and got 22 points.

Iv FH this gwk and got 11 good dgwk players and am on 54 points

Next week who knows, i have 11 players ready but will probably score sub 30 again

        • 8 Years

Also i TC'd Sane in gwk 27 as i had my chip strategy sorted: 3 points

Im somehow still 6k OR, but the DGWs and Blank weeks have been truly awful (all red arrows) - and iv had great planning for all of them

In any game with a relatively high luck element in rounds, proper strategy doesn't mean luck with always be on your side, it means over the course of all the rounds strategy should out weigh luck. If you're top 6k this is evidence

Same, my closest ML rival FH31, TC32.
He beat me my a few points in 31, mostly because he captained Mane. He's currently beating me in 32 by about 10 points as he TC'ed Aguero,(although that should change tonight as I have 7 players left and he has 4) but in 33 he has only 5 players +1FT, whereas I'll have 12, so I would expect to be up overall after GW33.

      1. TheDragon

Yes - it’s hard to know the true impact of the chps until after GW35. Lots in my mini league have been hanging in by playing chips but now are in a terrible state for GW33

        1. HamezMace
          • 9 Years

          Same.
Someone posted yesterday saying the game favors people who don't plan ahead. (I think he was just mad about the Aguero thing).
But I couldn't disagree more, most of my ML panicked when they realised about BGW31 a few days before it happened and were forced into FH'ing....I guess not realising 33 will also be a huge problem for them.

          1. TheDragon
            • 5 Years

There is no area of life where doing no planning is a better strategy than planning.

Yes lots will have to take lots of hits in 33 or field 6/7 players and then they will be badly set up for DGW 35 and we should gain an easy 20-40 points on them with 15 DGW’ers bench boosting.

Just need to stick to the plan until the result reveals itself

      If Sarri stays then probably.

They need strengthening in every department, except in goal, and central midfield.

64 with 8 to play. This includes Kepa, Rudiger, Laporte, Son, Sterling, Hazard and Aguero.

I obviously chose the wrong players, because that's terrible!

Who would you say are the best replacements for Sterling and Aguero, just for gw33 only?

    Morning all,

Sorry for reposting. But I guess it was too early for british time to ask.
As Shaw is out of picuture right now I am looking for a replacement and I'm stuck so need your opinions.

    Facts:

    1) 8 players available for GW33
    2) FH and WC already used
    3) I have Gunn, Ryan, Kolasinac who have 4 games in 3 GW. No other team has 4 games in 3 gw.

So either I double of in defense ARS/SOU/BHA or I will go with another defender 3 games in 3 GW. I know I can't play both Gunn and Ryan in GW35 but I am skeptical to play with a BHA defender against wol and tot aways.

    Any suggestion?

Wolves a decent pick for the doubles BRI/ARS. Bennett is an easy player to bring in, or Doherty/Jonny if you fancy being braver.
Followed by games against wat/FUL in 36/37.
      Just ignore 38 😉

Their defence isn’t very appealing even at discounted prices, only 6 CS this season. Personally will only consider Jiminez or jota

Jimenez should probably be in every WC team, or post33 team.

I'd still fancy them with two home games in the double, one of which is against Brighton.

Another team to consider might be Watford, hud/sou in the double, but some pretty horrible games after that.
