Double Gameweek 35 audition for Wolves and Watford at Wembley

Everton v Arsenal was the only Premier League match to take place on Sunday, so attention now switches to the FA Cup semi-final between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Watford.

Both of these sides enjoy two fixtures in Double Gameweek 35 and several of their players will be very much in the minds of Fantasy managers as they prepare their squads for the season run-in.

There are three changes to the Wolves side that beat Manchester United in midweek but the team that lines up at Wembley is effectively Nuno Espirito Santo’s first-choice starting XI, save for the inclusion of cup goalkeeper John Ruddy over Rui Patricio.

Romain Saiss gets the nod over Ryan Bennett at centre-half, while Jonny returns at wing-back as Ruben Vinagre makes way.

Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota resume their partnership up front, while Matt Doherty – owned by more than one in five FPL managers – lines up on the right flank.

Javi Gracia has made two changes to the team that beat Fulham on Tuesday, with Heurelho Gomes replacing Ben Foster as anticipated.

More noteworthy for Fantasy managers ahead of Gameweek 35 is the inclusion of Andre Gray over Gerard Deulofeu up front.

Gray set up two of the Hornets’ goals against the Cottagers in midweek and was talked up by fellow striker Troy Deeney in the club captain’s post-match interview.

Wolves XI (3-5-2): Ruddy, Saiss, Coady, Boly, Doherty, Dendoncker, Moutinho, Neves, Jonny, Jota, Jimenez.

Watford XI (4-4-2): Gomes, Kiko Femenía, Mariappa, Cathcart, Holebas, Hughes, Doucouré, Capoue, Pereyra, Deeney, Gray.

People like to underplay luck in this game, as why not take credit for the decisions that pay off? Thing is, no-one transfers in bad players (ok, a few might!), so it boils down to timing which is a mixture of skill and luck, and patience to stick with a player you rate until he returns you FPL points.

Bringing in a good player for a DGW isn't a long enough period for it to pay off, unless you get lucky.

Both. PPG favours Deulofeu as he's the better attacking option, but you have to balance that with the threat of rotation which swings things back in favour of Dacoure.

I've won all of mine for the last 5 years too, my knowledge of footy used to far out way the luck but the spoon feeding has made it more reliant on luck.

The more transfers you make, the more you have to be lucky - you need to jump off a player when he stops scoring, and jump on another player as he starts. If you play the game as a dullard, only transferring players after they blank over 6 games, or if you notice a change in tactics, etc. then you largely eliminate luck from the game.

That's a totally meaningless statement though because obviously you have to ability to influence your points with your own decisions. How much you attribute "luck" to your results depends on the TIMESCALE you choose. In any given week, luck is HUGE. Over three seasons, it's SMALL.

Like this. Would have said 70:30.

You can plan and put all the high % pieces in the right place at the perceived right time but it can still go wrong, but it'll go right a lot of the time too.

        1. Twisted Saltergater
          • 14 Years
          5 years, 14 days ago

It'll only go right over a longer period of time - unless you're lucky and the transfer pays off immediately. It's why so many of the HoF players do well but will never win FPL - they have the wrong strategy to try and win it. In short, they don't take enough risks, but by doing so, eliminate the luck element.

This is the most interesting statement for me:

"Fortunately it’s not all luck, yet. There’s still enough skill out there to drive some persistent performance. Based on my research, in any given season a top decile performer has a 58% likelihood of being a top decile performer again the next season."

A top decile performer this season (with around 4m teams starting) is Top 400k. Helps explain why some managers like FPL General and James Egersdorff are struggling.

    Mane > Eriken/Son
    TAA> Doherty

Bottomed. Thoughts on this WC team:

    Ryan, Foster
    Robertson, Laporte*, Duffy, Valery, Doherty*
    Mane, Eriksen, Sterling, Jota*, Camarasara
    Jimenez, Kane, Deeney

Then GW35 do Camarasara to Deloufeu or Doucoure.

    * I’m unsure of. Also keen to have Vardy for GW 34 but not sure how to go that and avoid a hit for GW35
