Arsenal’s away form a concern for FPL managers ahead of season run-in

The only Premier League match to take place on Sunday saw Everton deservedly beat Arsenal at Goodison Park.

Marco Silva’s side, who only play once in Gameweek 35, continued their fine run of form and registered their fifth clean sheet in six matches but the Gunners again produced a limp performance away from home – which, as we’ll discuss below, is something of a worry going into the final month of the season.

Everton 1-0 Arsenal

  • Goals: Phil Jagielka (£4.3m)
  • Assists: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.4m)

Arsenal’s familiar failings away from home were in evidence at Goodison Park on Sunday.

The Gunners’ shot count in the first half (one) was the lowest in almost three years as Everton bossed the opening exchanges and took a 1-0 lead into the interval.

The half-time introduction of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m) and Aaron Ramsey (£7.1m), coupled with a change of shape from a 3-4-2-1 to a 4-2-3-1, sparked a brief period of possession and pressure but clear-cut chances were thin on the ground and the Toffees looked more likely to add to their lead than concede an equaliser as the game wore on.

Unai Emery’s side have won only one of their last nine away fixtures (against bottom-of-the-table Huddersfield Town) and are the only top-flight club not to keep a clean sheet on their travels in 2018/19.

Given that four of Arsenal’s remaining six fixtures are on the road, including one of their Double Gameweek 35 matches, there will be understandable misgivings about their FPL assets for the season run-in.

We wrote last Monday that Fantasy managers would have learned little from Arsenal’s procession to victory over Newcastle on home soil, such has been the consistency of the Gunners’ display and results at the Emirates.

Two enticing home matches (against Palace in Gameweek 35 and Brighton in Gameweek 37) still remain but away fixtures against in-form mid-table sides Wolves, Watford and Leicester, plus a trip to Turf Moor, dent Arsenal assets’ appeal a little.

There is also the matter of potential rotation around the Europa League to contend with.

Arsenal only had seven shots across the 90 minutes on Merseyside (compared to Everton’s 23), with Ramsey coming closest to finding the back of the net when he was unable to steer a shot on target following a poor Jordan Pickford (£4.9m) punch.

Ramsey was a bright spark for the visitors in the opening exchanges of the second half, registering three shots within six minutes, but Aubameyang barely got a sniff as he switched between the right and left flanks in Emery’s 4-2-3-1.

The Gabonese forward has now been named as a substitute in four of the Gunners’ last six league matches – obviously not the rate of starts we should expect from a premium FPL forward.

Alexandre Lacazette (£9.4m) battled manfully, hitting the turf on three occasions in the first half, but a tame header from a lofted Sokratis (£5.1m) pass was his only attempt on goal in the entire match.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan‘s (£6.8m) influence waned after a bright start, while it will be no shock to many that an away match largely passed Mesut Ozil (£7.9m) by again.

Arsenal’s defence were again badly exposed, particularly in the second half as they attempted to claw their way back in the game.

Since January 2018, the Gunners have kept only one clean sheet on their travels – away at Huddersfield in Arsene Wenger’s final game in charge.

Sead Kolasinac (£5.0m) was hooked at half-time as Emery changed to a back four, which may be off-putting for those Fantasy managers considering drafting the wing-back into their squads for Double Gameweek 35.

In the last two matches that Emery has started with a 4-2-3-1 (Spurs and Rennes away), and in the second half of this defeat, Kolasinac has been benched in favour of Nacho Monreal (£5.4m) at left-back.

Emery voiced concerns about both formations after full-time:

In the first half, we were consistent and we didn’t concede good chances to them, but they scored from one throw-in, unfortunately for us. In the attacking third, we really needed more. We couldn’t continue like that in the second half. We needed to take chances in the attacking half.

In the second half, we decided to change and play with a 4-2-3-1. Defensively, we lost consistency in the second half. They created more chances in the second half. We created better chances than in the first, but we couldn’t score and they also didn’t. We need this balance in the first and second half, we need to do it better offensively and defensively with the balance.

Sokratis picked up his tenth booking of the season and will be suspended for Arsenal’s next two league fixtures, although Lucas Torreira (£4.7m) will return to the Gunners’ overrun midfield in Gameweek 34 after serving a three-game ban.

Granit Xhaka (£5.2m) and Laurent Koscielny (£5.4m) missed out through injury, with Emery saying of his sidelined pair:

Maybe Laurent could’ve come back to play today but yesterday we knew it wasn’t possible. I want to be positive for Thursday but it depends how he’s progressing. Xhaka is the same. They are doubts for Thursday.

Emery also explained why Ramsey, a minor injury doubt for this game with a groin strain, was only on the bench:

He was better and it was his idea to play but we spoke with the doctor and we had a doubt over him playing 90 minutes. We decided for him not to start, then after we needed him to come on.

We wrote in yesterday’s Scout Notes that owners of Leicester assets may face a difficult decision over what to do with their players given that the Foxes don’t have a Double Gameweek 35 but are otherwise in excellent form.

Owners of Everton’s assets may also be reluctant to part with their players, at least until after their Gameweek 34 meeting with a defensively suspect Fulham side has been and gone.

The Toffees’ unlikely match-winner was Phil Jagielka (£4.3m) but Everton’s two most-owned attacking options, Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.3m) and Richarlison (£6.5m), could each have found the back of the net on another day.

Sigurdsson registered four key passes and seven shots in total (five admittedly from outside the box) and both he and Richarlison were presented with a big chance in the second half.

The Icelandic midfielder could only steer Richarlison’s pinpoint cross into the arms of Bernd Leno (£4.8m) on 71 minutes, while the former Watford winger shanked an effort off target two minutes later when Sigurdsson’s blocked effort fell kindly into his path.

Those two players bossed on the underlying stats front but Bernard (£5.9m) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.4m) were arguably Everton’s two best performers, with the Brazilian’s work ethic and exquisite touches on the ball earning him a standing ovation on his departure.

Two shots and one key pass underlines why he is not quite the appealing Fantasy option that Richarlison and Sigurdsson are, however, although he should have doubled Everton’s lead when wasting a big chance created by substitute Theo Walcott (£5.9m) late on.

Calvert-Lewin started his sixth successive league match and is now the leading points scorer among FPL forwards under £5.5m this season.

The striker registered an assist for Jagielka’s winner when his blocked header fell at the feet of the veteran defender and his presence up front created plenty of problems for Arsenal’s backline, as well as multiple openings for the midfielders around him.

Everton are the form Premier League team from a defensive perspective and not even a late change at centre-half – an ill Michael Keane (£4.8m) making way for Jagielka just before kick-off – had much of an impact.

Lucas Digne (£5.2m) registered two bonus points to go with his clean sheet, while Seamus Coleman (£5.2m) – who linked up well with Richarlison down the Everton right – is now the leading points-scorer among FPL defenders over the last six Gameweeks.

Silva said of his side’s defensive efforts:

The clean sheet was the key for us. We are showing the solidity I really like, even when we are playing as the offensive team I want to see.

Jags showed how he is prepared to give everything the coach and his teammates need from him. He deserves all the credit and it was great for him to get the winning goal.

Arsenal reacted in the first 15 minutes after half-time and created some problems for us – but they had no big chances.

In two months [December and January] the details were making the difference against us. But the long break [the 17 days before Cardiff away] enabled us to work hard on the training ground and turn the details in our favour.

Our goalkeeper had calm afternoons against West Ham and Arsenal – that is a fantastic sign for us as a team.

Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Coleman, Jagielka, Zouma, Digne; Gomes (Davies 90′), Gueye; Richarlison (Walcott 79′), Sigurdsson, Bernard (Lookman 88′); Calvert-Lewin.

Arsenal XI (3-4-2-1): Leno; Sokratis, Mustafi, Monreal; Maitland-Niles, Guendozi, Elneny (Ramsey 46′), Kolasinac (Aubameyang 46′); Ozil (Iwobi 74′), Mkhitaryan; Lacazette.

Considering Ramsey + Firmino over Laca + Mane risky but means I don’t have to downgrade the likes of Sterling Robertson Lloris/ Tripps Erikson
    Thoughts?

      Firmino could be good.
But ramsey I see pure frustration sitting on bench and injuries
If you are willing to accept this is likely it is worth the risk

I’m worried about away form but Everton also on form atm, so feel like inversting less and worried about Kola but they still seem a decent punt

Reposting now that the FA Cup semi-finals are out of the way:

Talk to me about Watford and Wolves assets for the run-in. Would you expect the winner of their semi-final to rest/rotate for the season end, or will they keep going for it in the league and risk injury/fatigue to their main players?

Conversely, will the loser be on the beach? Or am I overthinking this? I just remember picking Leicester and Burnley players at last season's DGW wildcard and they burned me badly as they had nothing to play for.

On a very related note - who do you think will be more at risk of rotation/being on the beach? The loser or the winner?

tl:dr Wolves likely to be on the beach from now on?

Watford likely to take their foot off the pedal for the rest of the season until the final?

Wolves, Watford, Leicester, Everton still all competing for 7th place and Europa league qualification.

      Presuming they want to qualify.

Was 7th place Europa league qualification last year? I remember Leicester and Burnley (and Everton, though they were a bit further behind) playing like they were on the beach for a good few weeks at the end of that season.

I don't disagree, I'm just thinking back to teams 'fighting' for 7th last year and wondering whether 7th got Europe then as well.

The winner of the FA Cup goes into the Europa league, but obviously if man city win then they can't. Therefore 7th gets in instead

And the FA Cup final is a week after gw38. So not much rest or rotation required regarding that.

See below...Wolves season is over now. We've seen it time and again at the end of the season...next three games for Wolves are against two battling at the bottom and Arsenal battling for top 4 (although it didn't seem like it yesterday)

Will be interesting to see if they can remain motivated

Watford on the other hand do have a reason to keep playing...to retain form, players fighting for places etc...

Just don't understand why Aguero is not in any teams for a start...

Easy to forget Aguero exists after a brief injury given all the alternatives! But if fit he's definitely in my team, just waiting for Champions League and press conferences to see what's going on. Given his importance to City I don't think he'll be rotated much, at least not significantly more than other players we're looking at.

vardy has higher xg and xa than him. not to say i'm getting vardy instead, just to compare the involvement of the two this season in opportunities. even when you adjust for aguero's time on bench, i'd rather have him. and i'm not getting him either.

think eriksen (maybe) and son (definitely) offer much greater value, and it's easy for me to remove one of them for male/salah before hudds.

On a WC. Testing out my TC35, BB36 strategy

    Ryan, Foster
    Robbo, Doherty, Valery, Duffy, Dunk
    Sterling, Mane, Eriksen, Jota, Camarasa
    Kane, Deeney, Jimenez

    3.1m itb

Plan is to bench Brighton + Camarasa in GW35 and use 2 FT to maximise BB in 36.

Could be a viable strategy given the fixtures. Thoughts?

I think I have fluked upon this squad.
I was warned not to avoid arsenal but I just can't stick getting any of them too much annoying variables

    Ederson-Foster
    ---
    Valery-Dunk-Duffy-Robertson-Bednarek
    ---
    Son-JWP-Eriksen-Salah-Mane
    --
    Jimenez-Deeney-kane

The southampton and liverpool game has played a major part in my decision was impressed with both teams.
I plan to get mariappa in for Dunk injuries permitting gw35.
I think liverpool could beat Chelsea if they show the same spirit as the saints game.
Obviously from the line up I expect spurs goals galore new stadium etc.

no point having 3x liverpool when they play chelsea with no doubles. just use a ft to get one of them back before hudds

But liverpool have cardiff gw35 it could be as good as a double?
I could leave jota in and get salah gw36 as you suggest, but as I said I was impressed with liverpool's spirit they could steamroll cardiff.

Plus the other thing is those 3 liverpool lads are likely starters with rotation there is no garuantee that double gameweek players start both.
I might re-evalute it after the chelsea game.

I think I will hedge my bets leave jota in 5,1m in bank
Then gw35 upgrade dunk to VVD
Then depending on the spurs v city cl game it will help me decide what to do with the rest of the cash

    Hey lads, any ideas here?

    Schmeichel - Foster
VVD - Wan Bas - Lascelles - Pereira - Rice
    Salah - Haz - Mane - Fraser - Westwood
    Rondon - Vardy - Jimenez

    1ft & 3.7itb.
Obvious move is Rice out for someone. Also keen to bring in Son or Kane..
    Cheers.

ML opponent has gained over 100pts to knock me off top spot and his team is in disarray each week. Wildcards and free hit played at the wrong time. No squad for blank gw's yet he keeps fluking it. Thought he was out of sight at one point.
I'm looking at his next few gameweeks and thinking this long grass has to come soon. He will prob captain a random rashford or zaha and do more harm

would say having 2x liverpool is fine since they don't have a double but you can't go too far as will only have 2x transfers before 36 and before you know it we're at the end of the season. if there's players you want best to get them in now rather than take hits later for punts that probably aren't worth it

    1. Tsparkes10

Thoughts are I'm having Duffy and Dunk but don't want both in 35 but do for 34 and 36. So if I bench them and one other I can use my TC for someone with a DGW in 35. Then BB in 36 when all fixtures are nicer. Means I don't have to waste a stupid FT doing something like Duffy to Bednarek

      1. EMBOLOFAN
        • 5 Years

not BBing in a huge DGW when you have a WC to set up for it just isnt going to be optimal. especially when your reasoning is based solely on brighton defenders.

Many going double or triple Brighton defense for 34. But their fixtures are awful in 35. Not sure if BB worth if plauers have awful fixtures tbh

Of course I'm tempted but it requires 3x Brighton + Camarasa for it to be used effectively and if Brighton fail in GW34 then the plan takes a bad turn.

      BB35 means less DGW34 investments.

My worry with the BB36 strategy is that Man City assets will most likely be rested should they get past Spurs in the CL.

Otherwise, it's a viable strategy that could pay off. Can imagine many BB35ers having a benching headache in GW36

Dunk + Duffy as of now. But have 1.5m itb for upgrades. Sucks because I'm 0.1m away from Dunk -> Laporte

Might keep only Duffy. Saw someone punt on Peltier but that's really ballsy, dunno if I want to do that.

Looks like Spurs will field reserve team vs Hudd based on all the players rested according to people on here

Not reserve team but probably rest for few players vs worst team in the league.

Eriksen has played like 90+ minutes in each game since GW20 though. On the other hand, Poch seems to be managing Son's minutes lately. I think he will drop one of Son/Eriksen for the Huddersfield game. I got my money on Son starting over Eriksen against Huddersfield even if they both start in the CL.

        Well, we will see...

Still undecided but think i will choose Son cause 0.8

Kane is most likely the safest Spurs attacking option against Huddersfield though. He'll start. He's after that golden boot!

Prepping for the last few gameweeks & the 35 DGW...

    Schmeichel - Foster
VVD - Wan Bas - Lascelles - Pereira - Rice
    Salah - Haz - Mane - Fraser - Westwood
    Rondon - Vardy - Jimenez

Thinking Hazard + Rondon -> Kane + Deulofeu for a -4 this week???
Would then go Rice -> Tripper/Laporte for 35

    Bleedin Ramsay fail today.
Well at least that's the last time he'll grace my team.

The CL is going play havoc with my WC team. 4 teams you have to follow closely and rotation is bound to follow.

    Thoughts on this team?

    Foster Ryan
    Robertson Duffy Doherty Kola Valery
    Son Eriksen Sterling JWP Camarasa
    Kane Jimenez Laca

Duffy & Camarasa > Kiko & Deulofeu for the DGW

Lloris, Foster, Dunk and Duffy best route for Spurs, Watford and double Brighton defence?

I want but keep considering Kane in his place.

I am considering him but that means I might have to take a -8 to get a DGW player, otherwise I might just go with one Brighton def

would be nice to have him but would need to get rid of him again and need those FTs for more important things

I think Newcastle are likely to sit back, absorb the pressure and invite Leicester to have a go. Not ideal for Vardy.

Higuain and Alonso playing cards on the bench is more likely.

    Rice + Rondon + Hazard -> Duffy + Kane + 7.7 to spend? -8. Gives me Kane (c) and a 4 game duffy.

understandable to want kane rather than hazard but try to do it with 2 transfers

I can afford Vardy -> Kane for free.

But I fancy Vardy over the next 2 fixtures. Tough call.

I could just do Haz + Rondon, but getting duffy in too gives me at least 4 points if they concede in both games, while also giving me another DGW player in 35...

True. Just thinking that Kane's ceiling vs. Huddersfield & Brighton, both at home, has to be the biggest out of any player over the next 2 weeks.

My heart says I agree with you. But my head says that Spurs are the only team to have scored more goals away from home this season. They do like a good struggle against bad teams at home!
