One win in nine for Bournemouth as their FPL assets lose appeal

Following our write-up of Newcastle United v Crystal Palace earlier today, we now turn our attention to two more teams whose Fantasy assets perhaps have limited appeal in the season run-in.

Burnley have a favourable match in Gameweek 34 (Cardiff City at home) but face three of the “big six” and an in-form Everton thereafter.

Bournemouth’s remaining five fixtures look more agreeable but three of those games are away from home and the out-of-sorts Cherries have lost ten of their last 11 league matches on the road.

Most significant of all, perhaps, is that neither of these clubs have two fixtures in Double Gameweek 35.

Bournemouth 1-3 Burnley

  • Goals: Ashley Barnes (£5.7m) own-goal | Chris Wood (£6.2m), Ashley Westwood (£4.6m), Ashley Barnes
  • Assists: Jefferson Lerma (£4.5m) | Ashley Westwood, Chris Wood

From a fixture difficulty perspective, Bournemouth are one of the most appealing teams who have only one match in Double Gameweek 35.

A home game against Fulham in a fortnight’s time is certainly eye-catching but the well-documented weaknesses in the Cottagers’ defence is about the only factor in Bournemouth’s favour at present.

The Cherries’ atrocious away form has been much discussed over the last few months but wins on home soil have dried up too and it’s now four matches without a victory at the Vitality Stadium.

Eddie Howe’s side sit in the bottom three of the Premier League form table when clubs are filtered by their last eight matches (home and away) and only Huddersfield Town and Fulham have scored fewer goals in that time.

The south coast club did face the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal in that run but have also failed to beat Cardiff, Newcastle and Burnley since their 4-0 hammering of Chelsea in Gameweek 24.

The return to fitness of Callum Wilson (£6.6m) and David Brooks (£5.1m) ahead of the Cherries’ fixture swing in Gameweek 30 was seen as a positive and, while Wilson, Joshua King (£6.6m) and Ryan Fraser (£6.3m) have each delivered one double-digit FPL haul since then, the goals perhaps haven’t quite flowed as anticipated.

Fraser was a little unlucky not to deliver an attacking return on Saturday, as it was from his teasing free-kick that Ashley Barnes (£5.7m) bundled the ball into his own goal on three minutes: a touch from Jefferson Lerma (£4.5m) en route depriving the Scotland international of an assist.

King later flashed a header wide from another Fraser cross and Wilson blazed over a great opportunity that the Scottish winger carved out for him in stoppage time, the 22nd such “big chance” that the diminutive wide-man has supplied this season – no Fantasy asset has created more.

An off-the-boil Wilson also headed over another clear-cut chance from a Brooks cross in the first half, with the Wales international perhaps the pick of the hosts’ players on Saturday amid some flat performances.

Howe’s words after the game were damning:

The disappointing thing for us in recent weeks is we have not quite seen the clear philosophy we want and that hurts me more than anything.

We are going to have to go away and figure out why we are not seeing that and work towards delivering a better product.

Very few times have I felt in my management career that I have a looked at a team and not quite seen what we have worked on. We are just going through one of those phases at the moment where it is not quite coming off for us.

You have to prove your worth every game, every training session, every moment. You are part of a team at this level and you have to continually prove you are good enough to play in it.

Now, obviously I pick the team and I have not picked a good enough team at the moment. We are going to have to review everything we do.

Asmir Begovic (£4.3m) was handed a second successive start but the Cherries’ goalkeeper had something of a horror show between the posts, being caught under an Ashley Westwood (£4.6m) cross for Chris Wood‘s (£6.2m) headed equaliser and then failing to deal with another delivery for the Barnes goal that sealed Burnley’s 3-1 win.

Begovic was also nearly caught out by another Westwood free-kick at his near post and Howe said after the match:

I’ve always backed our goalkeepers, I think we have got two excellent ones. Mistakes happen, that’s part and parcel of the game in every position, today we made numerous mistakes in areas of the pitch we wouldn’t expect to. I always back my players and I know the quality they have.

Adam Smith (£4.3m) returned from injury in this match but Charlie Daniels (£4.1m) was absent, with Howe confirming that the long-serving left-back is set for a lengthy period on the sidelines:

Charlie has picked up a really bad-looking injury regarding his kneecap. He has had an operation and will be out for some time.

Barnes and Wood’s aerial prowess and physical presence caused the Bournemouth backline plenty of problems, with the Clarets’ game-plan again obvious as they fired over 28 crosses in total – no club has delivered more in their last six matches.

Westwood, who has taken on set-piece responsibilities since Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.5m) lost his place, stole the headlines with a goal and assist and no budget midfielder under the £5.0m bracket has as many FPL points as the former Aston Villa man this season.

Dwight McNeil (£4.4m) blanked but deserves a mention, as he excelled down the left flank to the point where Nathaniel Clyne (£4.4m) was hauled off at the break on a yellow card.

No player delivered more crosses at the Vitality than McNeil, who has now started Burnley’s last 14 Premier League games.

Dyche said of the young winger:

He continues to enjoy the challenge and grow in his performances, and his understanding of his and the team performance. He’s doing a very, very good job.

Matthew Lowton (£4.6m) returned at right-back as Phil Bardsley (£4.2m) missed out through injury, with Dyche revealing:

Lowts came in last minute – unfortunately Bardo had an accident at the training ground, slipped and slashed his leg from some wood, believe it or not. We’ve had that kind of season.

There was a game the lads play and a bit of wood broke off and caught him across his thigh and he has got a gash on his thigh and we couldn’t consider him. We will see in the week, there’s a good chance [for next week] but we will have to wait and see.

Tom Heaton (£4.8m) has only faced four shots on target in the last two Gameweeks and Dyche hailed the players in front of him after full-time:

Lowts was steady, he did a good job. I thought the centre-halves, again, diligent and calm in their performances. Charlie Taylor continues to improve, Dwight obviously.

The midfield two were excellent – Westy is having a fine second half of the season.

The front two were a handful, Jeff’s doing a great job. We ask a lot of Jeff but he continues to do a great job.

Bournemouth XI (4-4-2): Begovic; Clyne (Rico 46′), Mepham, Ake, Smith; Brooks, Gosling (Solanke 59′), Lerma (Stanislas 71′), Fraser; Wilson, King.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Heaton; Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Hendrick (Gudmundsson 82′), Westwood, Cork, McNeil; Wood, Barnes.

If your suicidal comments translate into, will it kill your team then no. It’s all part of the fun to mix it up and go with your own decisions.

All good players in their own right.

    Thoughts on this WC Team:

    Foster Gunn
    Robertson Laporte Duffy Valery Bednarek
Son Eriksen Sterling Jota Camarasa (will sell for Hoj)
Kane Jimenez Vardy (will sell for Deeney)

My only concern is no Mane.

      Worry more about no Salah

Players struggle to reach milestones but then floodgates open once pressure relieved.

Mané was way over performing again

Don't want to be planning to take a hit after a WC, plus you cant start all of you're front 8 in gw 34 anyways. If you're selling Vardy for Deeney surely you could upgrade camasara to someone better than Hoj also?

How is this template? I think this is the only other team apart from mine that I've seen that has 4 premium mids. Every other team has 2 cheap mids.

Anyway, I like it and can't see why more aren't going for 4 premium mids especially with lots of good cheap forward options available. My team is v similar - biggest dif probably having Aguero + Rashford over Kane and Deeney.

Also similar to mine. 2 Sou + 1 Brighton is bad for GW37 though and don't like having to plan to make a defender transfer if i can help it - always other stuff that comes up.

I have TAA instead and also gone for another cheap GK in Gunn.

Sterling. Not enough good premium mids but you can go for Kane over Aguero. I have both though and don't see how you would be forced to go for just 1.

    Lloris - Etheridge

Just to follow the recent trend...

    Foster, Ryan
    Robertson, TAA, Laporte, Duffy, Dunk
    Sterling, Eriksen, Son, Jota, Deulofeu
    Kane, Jimenz, Deeney

Spurs play Huddersfield and then have a good double so I want to maximise points from them.
Brighton triple up has a high ceiling this week and gives me playing bench fodder for the rest of the season (one to be transferred out (£0.8m ITB) if nothing else pressing is needed next week.
    BB week 35.

    How's it looking?

      I think it looks nice.

I’d be worried that one of your Spurs mids is rested this week and therefore you lose a spot that could have had a high scoring player in.

The BHA triple up as you say has a potentially high ceiling but makes me very nervous as they aren’t exactly prone to CSs and so one how leaked will decimate your defence.

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

As long as BHA don't concede loads then they should get 4 points each but I agree it's high risk.
I could just own Valery ready for next week and play Deeney vs Arsenal this week rather than benching him.

Yes very likely, I have double Liverpool defence who often chip in with attacking points.
I also have the possibility of Sterling to Mane week 36.

the thing about brighton is...lets say they dont keep a CS in either game and your getting av 4 points per player...thats still a good return for a 4.5M player.

I wouldnt expect a 4.5m player to get me more than 3.5 points a game (when played)

one attaching return or clean sheet and thats a fantastic points return

If you get Knockeart + Ryan and Duffy. It reduces rick if Brighton concede allot of goals.

Knockeart still gets 4, Ryan prob 4 due to saves, Duffy mayb 3...but still upside so high if Knock gets 1 assist just for example

I think Knockaert is likely to play allot of minutes.

If gross is out, March still out they don’t have anyone else to take the corners and this is key to how they play

Also Knockaert man of the match vs city this weekend

It depends what it means for the rest of your team tbh.

Does it mean no LIV attack? In which case I would be careful...

Trouble is there are a lot of bargain players with some good DGW fixtures that mean you don’t need to go so heavy on 3 teams.

It could pay off but you may find more balance by spreading it

Can someone tell me why this is a crazy WC team below. First season playing so i am wondering if im making a big mistake. Just got to top of my mini league at work first time all season and want to stay at the top 🙂

Would play Knockeart in 34...but not after this (bench only)
    BB in 35
Will play Redmond for 36,37,38 (Southampton fixtures)

    Plan is to

WK36 Transfers - depending on minutes and likely rotation - either

Sterling to Mane, Foster to Alisson
or Erikson out for Mane and another move.

    Ryan, Foster
    Laporte, Trippier, Duffy, Doherty, Valery
    Sterling, Erikson, Jota, Redmond, Knockaert
    Kane, Aguero, Jimenez

RP on new article for a couple more opinions:-)

I really believe Salah is now the better pick over Mané. But the choice would be this:

    A) Salah, Son, TAA
    B) Mané, Eriksen, Robbo

Do you think it’s worth it? I’m inclined to think yes but would like to hear opinions! Main concern is likelihood of rotation of Son/ TAA vs Eriksen/ Robbo

    Team at present is:
    Lloris
    XXXX, Laporte, Duffy
    Sterling, XXXX, XXXX, Jota, Camarasa
    Kane, Jimi
    (Foster) (Deeney, Valery, Jonny)

Planning transfers after a WC is never ideal but I would hope to do Cama > WAT mid for BB35

So do you think Salah (A) or Mané (B)?

    Cheers

The money a player rises by you only get half when you sell.
So Pogba cost me 7.9 sold at 8.9 but only got 8.4, shows in your team at full value.

Probably been mentioned on here many times but are City's assets really essential?

Obviously there's the rotation factor to consider, they are expensive but its their last few performances that are a concern - going a goal or 2 up then taking their foot off the gas and coasting to see out the game.....

Personally I've gone with Sterling but I'm not confident, just scared of missing out on a haul.

Im going Laporte, Sterling and Aguero.

Its the potential they have to go mad. I almost feel they could be more dangerous v Man u to some extent. As the bigger teams will open up more and attack. look what city did to Arsenal and Chelsea over a 3 game run?

Best GK combo on the WC?

    1) Ryan and Foster
    - Foster is pretty much a certainty as he has good save and bps potential
    - Ryan isnt comparing favourably on baps relative to duffy/dunk
    - Rotation wise, the rotation works great apart from gw37 when they play arsenal and chelsea away respectively

    Other options include
    2) Foster + Lloris...but that would mean benching foster in gw36-38. this option costs 1m more then the 1st option but would mean good fixtures till end of season

    3) Gunn + Foster...works well too but is gunn nailed? plus valery a better value option?

Mad how all these options and no doubt majority of us will have wished we went Firminho over Mane etc or Kun over Kane. Then you'll have or 2 gloating they had King for his haul against Fulham.

No matter how much we plan etc it's just gonna go one way or the other, my first WC was awful, dropped me quickly from 2k to about 80k. Hopefully this turns out decent. Go with you gut!

One of our esteemed Antipodean community members posts scathing comments on any RMT with any more Brighton DEF representation than Duffy. As I'm thinking of a Brighton triple up for week 34, I thought I'd look into their home performances so far:

Clean Sheets - 5 out of 16 games
1 goal conceded - 5 games (including Liverpool and Arsenal)
2 goals conceded - 4 games (including Manchester United, Spurs and Chelsea)
    3 goals conceded - 1 game

The other 2 goal game was Fulham back in week 4. The 3 goal game was Burnley. It wouldn't be unreasonable to treat this as an anomaly, and it is also worth pointing out that Duffy scored in this game.

We can interpret this how we like, but Cardiff and Bournemouth represents a great opportunity for 1 and possibly even two clean sheets. As I'm chasing in my main ML, this triple up seems like a gamble worth taking.

      Using your stats for cleansheets
      10% chance of double cleansheet.
      43% chance of 1 cleansheet
      47% chance of no cleansheets

      1. F_Ivanovic

Will be higher than that based on the opposition though.

Anyway, pretty sure everyone knows who OP is talking about haha. I do think he's right re. tripling up but it's really got nothing to do with GW34 so much as the rest of the season where only one other game is a decent CS shout. And 37 is problematic if you are going for Valery/Bednarek too.
