One win in nine for Bournemouth as their FPL assets lose appeal

Following our write-up of Newcastle United v Crystal Palace earlier today, we now turn our attention to two more teams whose Fantasy assets perhaps have limited appeal in the season run-in.

Burnley have a favourable match in Gameweek 34 (Cardiff City at home) but face three of the “big six” and an in-form Everton thereafter.

Bournemouth’s remaining five fixtures look more agreeable but three of those games are away from home and the out-of-sorts Cherries have lost ten of their last 11 league matches on the road.

Most significant of all, perhaps, is that neither of these clubs have two fixtures in Double Gameweek 35.

Bournemouth 1-3 Burnley

  • Goals: Ashley Barnes (£5.7m) own-goal | Chris Wood (£6.2m), Ashley Westwood (£4.6m), Ashley Barnes
  • Assists: Jefferson Lerma (£4.5m) | Ashley Westwood, Chris Wood

From a fixture difficulty perspective, Bournemouth are one of the most appealing teams who have only one match in Double Gameweek 35.

A home game against Fulham in a fortnight’s time is certainly eye-catching but the well-documented weaknesses in the Cottagers’ defence is about the only factor in Bournemouth’s favour at present.

The Cherries’ atrocious away form has been much discussed over the last few months but wins on home soil have dried up too and it’s now four matches without a victory at the Vitality Stadium.

Eddie Howe’s side sit in the bottom three of the Premier League form table when clubs are filtered by their last eight matches (home and away) and only Huddersfield Town and Fulham have scored fewer goals in that time.

The south coast club did face the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal in that run but have also failed to beat Cardiff, Newcastle and Burnley since their 4-0 hammering of Chelsea in Gameweek 24.

The return to fitness of Callum Wilson (£6.6m) and David Brooks (£5.1m) ahead of the Cherries’ fixture swing in Gameweek 30 was seen as a positive and, while Wilson, Joshua King (£6.6m) and Ryan Fraser (£6.3m) have each delivered one double-digit FPL haul since then, the goals perhaps haven’t quite flowed as anticipated.

Fraser was a little unlucky not to deliver an attacking return on Saturday, as it was from his teasing free-kick that Ashley Barnes (£5.7m) bundled the ball into his own goal on three minutes: a touch from Jefferson Lerma (£4.5m) en route depriving the Scotland international of an assist.

King later flashed a header wide from another Fraser cross and Wilson blazed over a great opportunity that the Scottish winger carved out for him in stoppage time, the 22nd such “big chance” that the diminutive wide-man has supplied this season – no Fantasy asset has created more.

An off-the-boil Wilson also headed over another clear-cut chance from a Brooks cross in the first half, with the Wales international perhaps the pick of the hosts’ players on Saturday amid some flat performances.

Howe’s words after the game were damning:

The disappointing thing for us in recent weeks is we have not quite seen the clear philosophy we want and that hurts me more than anything.

We are going to have to go away and figure out why we are not seeing that and work towards delivering a better product.

Very few times have I felt in my management career that I have a looked at a team and not quite seen what we have worked on. We are just going through one of those phases at the moment where it is not quite coming off for us.

You have to prove your worth every game, every training session, every moment. You are part of a team at this level and you have to continually prove you are good enough to play in it.

Now, obviously I pick the team and I have not picked a good enough team at the moment. We are going to have to review everything we do.

Asmir Begovic (£4.3m) was handed a second successive start but the Cherries’ goalkeeper had something of a horror show between the posts, being caught under an Ashley Westwood (£4.6m) cross for Chris Wood‘s (£6.2m) headed equaliser and then failing to deal with another delivery for the Barnes goal that sealed Burnley’s 3-1 win.

Begovic was also nearly caught out by another Westwood free-kick at his near post and Howe said after the match:

I’ve always backed our goalkeepers, I think we have got two excellent ones. Mistakes happen, that’s part and parcel of the game in every position, today we made numerous mistakes in areas of the pitch we wouldn’t expect to. I always back my players and I know the quality they have.

Adam Smith (£4.3m) returned from injury in this match but Charlie Daniels (£4.1m) was absent, with Howe confirming that the long-serving left-back is set for a lengthy period on the sidelines:

Charlie has picked up a really bad-looking injury regarding his kneecap. He has had an operation and will be out for some time.

Barnes and Wood’s aerial prowess and physical presence caused the Bournemouth backline plenty of problems, with the Clarets’ game-plan again obvious as they fired over 28 crosses in total – no club has delivered more in their last six matches.

Westwood, who has taken on set-piece responsibilities since Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.5m) lost his place, stole the headlines with a goal and assist and no budget midfielder under the £5.0m bracket has as many FPL points as the former Aston Villa man this season.

Dwight McNeil (£4.4m) blanked but deserves a mention, as he excelled down the left flank to the point where Nathaniel Clyne (£4.4m) was hauled off at the break on a yellow card.

No player delivered more crosses at the Vitality than McNeil, who has now started Burnley’s last 14 Premier League games.

Dyche said of the young winger:

He continues to enjoy the challenge and grow in his performances, and his understanding of his and the team performance. He’s doing a very, very good job.

Matthew Lowton (£4.6m) returned at right-back as Phil Bardsley (£4.2m) missed out through injury, with Dyche revealing:

Lowts came in last minute – unfortunately Bardo had an accident at the training ground, slipped and slashed his leg from some wood, believe it or not. We’ve had that kind of season.

There was a game the lads play and a bit of wood broke off and caught him across his thigh and he has got a gash on his thigh and we couldn’t consider him. We will see in the week, there’s a good chance [for next week] but we will have to wait and see.

Tom Heaton (£4.8m) has only faced four shots on target in the last two Gameweeks and Dyche hailed the players in front of him after full-time:

Lowts was steady, he did a good job. I thought the centre-halves, again, diligent and calm in their performances. Charlie Taylor continues to improve, Dwight obviously.

The midfield two were excellent – Westy is having a fine second half of the season.

The front two were a handful, Jeff’s doing a great job. We ask a lot of Jeff but he continues to do a great job.

Bournemouth XI (4-4-2): Begovic; Clyne (Rico 46′), Mepham, Ake, Smith; Brooks, Gosling (Solanke 59′), Lerma (Stanislas 71′), Fraser; Wilson, King.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Heaton; Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Hendrick (Gudmundsson 82′), Westwood, Cork, McNeil; Wood, Barnes.

Neither. Don't plan a transfer that you have to do in advance* especially when it would be a disaster if you were forced to keep them if more pressing problems occur. I'd rather have the option of 2 transfers going into 36 in case Salah is essential again by then for example.

*Only exception to this would be if it was a premium player who you would expect to score 4 points more on avg. I don't think that applies to Camarasa over JWP or Murray over Jimenez.

Assume Dunk is Duffy but dislike Brighton double up. I expect them to do well in 34 but nothing is a guarantee and they're bad for 35 and you have a problem in 37.

Also Camarasa bad option for 35 BB. Not keen on Wolves double up... could have lost some motivation after their cup defeat.

I captained him twice this season for 64 points in total so I'm very tempted, especially as Newcastle's away form is pretty poor!

I've been a consistent party member of Vardy. I have never captained him. I am going with him. He knows I've been for most parties of his so I expect the goodies, if otherwise I will be hurt

I was advised not to go with 3 City forwards, due to rotation and it seems that Kane is a must have so have concocted the following GW34 WC; bench boost DGW35.

                a) I don't want to play any of my Watford 3 in GW34, they are there for the DGW against hud, SOU?

                b) Is Kane/Aguero just ruining my squad or accepting that either could go mad on any of the next 3 GWs?

                c) Should I forget Holebas (ARS) and bring in Dunk for 3 Brighton defenders DGW34; BOU & CAR?

                Ryan (Foster)
                TTA, Duffy, Bennett (Holebas, Valery)
                Sterling, Mane, Jota, Doucouré, Højbjerg,
                Kane, Agüero, Jiménez

                Hello guys,
                Need some advice.

I'm pretty set on below team:

                Lloris • Foster
                Robbo•Taa•Laporte•Duffy•Valery
                Mane•Sterling•Eriksen•Jota•Deulofeu
                Kane•Jimenez•Deeney

I have received few suggestions to try Murray/Camarasa for one week.

My thinking is that, I have invested heavily on my bench, so may need to use FT to wipe out the bench afterwards gw 35.

So Saving FT in gw 35 is in my mind.

Am i being to cautious ??
Should I try Camarasa for this gw ??

                Thank you !!

TAA to Doherty? You already have Robbo.
Why not Laca? A goal or an assist every 80 mins is not that bad, with easier fixture and pushing for UCL spot, he could be gold. Even I am confused between Deeney and Laca. Since I already have Deule , thought Laca will be better.

I have two reasons mate :
                            A. I really like Pool double up on defense as they have plum fixtures. Also Doherty/Wolves don't keep CS anymore so that's a downgrade imo.
                            B. Don't trust Emery anymore. Getting Auba in gw 23 has ruined my season so not going that way again. They have 4 away fixtures so no-go for me

Murray & Camarasa, no way I'd get either of those! That looks a superb squad to me, should see you skyrocket the rankings over the next couple of gameweeks!
Would be a little bit unsure of double Wolves attack though but could be gold, both players in terrific form...GL!

For better or worse, I have exactly the same 13 as you (at the moment), plus Doherty and JWP instead of Valery and Jota. I can't quite afford your pair anyway, although I think it's a tight call.

Bound to be a few horrors in terms of rotation/ injury (obviously keep an eye on Deulofeu) but I obviously like it.

My last draft is similar in thinking, and there is some main issues when it comes to WC so late in the season. My question for you is are you that confident in Wolves and Watford? Cardiff does not inspire me much but Cam in for a double, it might pay off in points but most likely you´d want him out in 35, so is it worth?

I´m not sold on Laporte, regardless of his dgw hauls, but other than a Brighton double def it´s not much better option perhaps.

Kun vs Sterling is one to consider but involves deeney and a mid around 6m so hm, i prefer kun myself but in your team i would probably say sterling because deeney better than most options in the 6m bracket in midfield.

Any suggested changes to this WC team? Have gone with triple Spurs and 4 premium mids for now...

                Foster – Ryan
                TAA – Duffy – Valery – Doherty – Cathcart
                Sterling – Mane – Son – Eriksen – Jota

                Choose:

                A) Lloris & Hojbjerg
                B) Ryan & Redmond/JWP

Its easier to bench Hojbjerg but I feel I can start Redmond/JWP when my Wolves/Watford attackers (Jota & Deeney) have tougher fixtures between GW36-38.

Lloris obviously the better option than Ryan but it would mean im forced to bench Foster every other gameweek except BB.

                Appreciate your thoughts! 🙂

A as you won't need a keeper transfer again this season.

Ryan has a bad gw 35 imo.

Duffy is only Brighton asset I'm keeping atm

I really like Lloris fixtures for 34-35 (HUD, mci, BHA).

But I feel they have a very good chance of conceding in every game between 36-38 (WHU, bou, EVE).

I’m all for Foster / Gunn. Southampton are picking up pace at the hard end of the season and look like a good unit - with those good fixtures too! And Foster’s got the save points easily, and can cover the bench boost DGW35 option perfectly.

Worth considering whether you’d prefer a defender over a given goalkeeper. For Brighton you can go Duffy or Dunk instead of Ryan, for Arsenal Kolasinac still seems a better source of points than Leno, for Spurs Trippier will probs play both DGW35s or the centre backs are nailed anyway, Doherty will more than cover Patricio’s points, and Laporte is a much better bet than Ederson.

For Watford? Holebas is a liability, Cathcart is as dull as they come, anyone else is a risk. Go Foster!

Ryan and Foster for me. Gives you three doubles, while Trippier will cover Spurs' clean sheets while offering attacking threat. Ederson very tempting but the extra money can be spent better elsewhere, and I expect City's defensive returns to suffer from rotation.

I'm leaning toward Ryan/Gunn or Foster/Gunn right now. Trying to factor in money moves over the closing weeks looks pretty tricky tbh..las thing I want to be doing is downgrading a GK for funds!

Very similar to a team I've been looking at but you clearly have exceptional team value!

I've got Dunk, Bednarek, Robbo and Hojbjerg instead of LaPorte, Doherty, Trent and JWP in my current draft :/

I feel some Arsenal representation is necessary and I'm opting for Laca. Also I prefer Ryan over Lloris which allows you to work Trippier in perhaps. I think Deulofeu is the best Watford option due to form.

Would it be wise to take a punt on a 3rd brighton def and then transfer him out for 35 ? First I was thinking of Camarasa for 34 then transfer out for 35.

Player: Vardy (his recent form deserves a mention as I've captained him twice for a total of 64pts...is he a hold?)
Team: Arsenal (are any of their assets really worth it?)
Talking Point: Rotation (is it too risky to load up on Spurs & City with all that fixture congestion?)

After a series of red arrows in GW 21-24 and big rank drop I decided to go with the template and climb back steadily. It's not very satisfying but It worked (in a way). Though I'm still behind in my ML's, almost all of my rivals still has WC/BB/TC and I feel that at this point template Wildcard is off the table. I have to go a bit different.

My question is: who do you think are the best template busters on a WC this week? I thought that Eriksen could be one but started to see him in a lot of teams. Another one I am considering is Lukaku. I know he is not ideal pick, but I'm not talking about reasonable transfers. It has to be bold and include high risk/reward.

Are Leicester worthy of a spot or two in our WC sides?

Player - Is Kane worth the 12.5 or can he be covered with Son/Eriksen
Team - Arsenal due to away form and rotation
Talking point - will you be planning for gw 35/36 in advance, i.e plan to roll next transfer and ensure you have suitable player to make a switch and ditching a more expensive player for bench fodder (assuming you have 15 for BB)

Brighton Southampton and Watford should be the teams to discuss. Not a lot of good options for me in those teams, but fixtures wise they're the top ones. I wouldn't be considering most of their players if not for a dgw, is that blinding my thinking on them?

Aguero on wildcard? Other city attacking options such as sterling silvas and de bruyne as well. Surely they've got to play their strongest team the majority of the time.

Any man United options worth considering?

I'd like to hear thoughts on Kane as a wildcard option - he seems to be in a lot of teams, but the Huddersfield game (heavy captain option) is sandwiched between 2 x Man City CL games so fatigue/limited minutes may be a factor (and, if memory serves, he doesn't seem to score too highly after CL games). The Brighton game is a few days after another Man City (this time PL) game and if fatigue wasn't a factor earlier it may will be by then. I guess at least Brighton will have had 2 DGWs too by that point so they may be tired too.

He hasn't been racking up big hauls of late either, but does seem to be one of the few big hitters in the DGW that is likely to start all matches...

Thanks Joe. Looking forwrad to the Wildcard (and GW35 BB) discussions continuing. Breakfast club was great this past weekend.

Player - Kane - we think he'll start every game, the fixtures are good, the form is improving. Is he a must-have at the expense of Aguero and extra cash to spread around the rest of the BB/DGW teams?

Team #1 - Arsenal. Many were set to back them from GW35 on (e.g., Lacazette, Aubameyang, Kolasinac, Leno). But their away form is truly worrying after the Everton defeat.

Team #2 - Man United. Not much chatter about them on WC with fixtures congestion, nagging injuries, a more defensive Pogba, and few clean sheets clouding the picture. Are we ignoring them at our peril for the run-in?

Talking Point - Rotation of teams still in European football (all of the Top Six). Should we expect at least one rest from most big-hitters for the run in (especially in DGW 35?). City, Spurs, and Liverpool... should we go for the players with the highest ceiling and accept rotation will happen or try to guess the most nailed-on?

Talking Point #2 - Single-game week players in our WC teams? Any worth it? Vardy Party against Newcastle and then transfer him out for someone like Jimenez? Mane in the midfield to have him in for Cardiff, Huddersfield and the run-in?

45.5% of the top 10k played their Free Hits in DGW32, getting an average score of 95.2, but some played other chips, so the average top 10k score was 90.8 - probably a far smaller differential than might have been expected.

Only 38.9% of the top 10k had played their Second Wildcard before GW34, and a large majority of the remainder are probably playing it this week. This could be where having a high TV as well as the Wildcard confers an advantage.

With the threat of rotation, it is entirely possible the likes of Liverpool, Leicester, Everton and Bournemouth will gain as many FPL points as the DGW teams.
Are we not chasing the ace over a DGw team who are likely to rotate players rather than go for obvious choices?

Team: Brighton - Is 3 Brighton players (Duffy, Dunk, Ryan) overkill for GW34 WC?

Talking point - I’d love the Scouts views on what sort of things we should be doing if chasing in a mini-league? There already seems to be a bit of a WC template forming and that’s not good for those of us chasing.

There’s a lot of rank driven discussion throughout the season but most players are in mini-leagues against friends, family and co-workers. Top tips for coming out on top? 🙂

Brighton have a good DGW, a bad DGW and then a decent home fixture. 3 Brighton this week, bench for 35, use triple captain, bench boost on 36. Is this a viable strategy? Main downside being bench boost is quite far from wildcard in terms of matches played.

Is the Brighton DGW being overhyped for defenders considering that Bournemouth typically play attacking football and Cardiff will be throwing everything they have at them in a must win game; both of which making clean sheets a lot less likely?

Morning Joe, I've been giving this some thought ....

Player - Harry Kane (a bit boring I know) but is he the ultimate shield (c) this week against HUD (great fixture at home) and with a double to follow in 35 or should his lack of form, his tendency to drop deep and difficult (potentially tiring) matches against Man City in the CL either side of GW34 mean we should be looking elsewhere and could Son, Alli, Eriksen or even Moura be a better option?

Team - Arsenal. They have a double in GW35 and no fixtures against the top 6 for the rest of the season but can their assets be relied upon after the weekends result against Everton. They have lots of away fixtures but are terrible away from home. There maybe rotation because of the Europa league. Which of Lacazette and Aubameyang will start in the PL. Kolasinac heat map looks great but he will need attacking returns cos they don't keep cleansheets. I'm not sure if they are good options or not?

Talking Point - In form single GW players v DGW players. With so many single gameweek players bang in form, Vardy, Hazard and even Salah (maybe), are we sure that going without these for GW34 and GW35 in order to cram in as many DGW players as possible is actually going to yield us more points over the 2 GW's, especially as we can't even be sure that all the DGW players will actually get 2 matches e.g. Man City assets.

Has there been an overreaction to the Arsenal away form thing based on one game v Everton?

They were in everybody's teams before this game for example. Torriera/Xhaka returning will mean they are a different animal + Everton are one of the form teams in the league atm.

Still may be worth considering the likes of Leno/Monreal/Kola/Laca/Auba cosnidering the calibre of teams they will be facing and how they will be fighting tooth and nail to win them.

100x this. I think there is a lot of recency bias here. Was defeat to Everton really all that surprising (I didn't have Arsenal players for GW33 and rather played Digne with a fair amount of confidence)?

Arsenal are still a top 6 team, they have 2 of the league's top strikers, and while they may not keep clean sheets, they are still capable of scoring away from home. Besides, Kola is practically a midfielder and can contribute attacking wise.

People point out that the side doesn't seem settled but all of the top 6 are still in Europe so there's going to be rotation hanging over most of the more popular assets, not just Arsenal's.

Hazard - Home fixture v Burnley in DGW 35. Is he worth considering over the potentially rotated City/spurs midfielders?

Watford - Good fixtures but surely minding Deeney/Delefeu/Doucoure for the FA cup?

Triple Captain - Better to play this chip on Harry Kane in 34 or in the DGW 35 instead of bench boost???

                Duffy (c) Robertson Dunk

                Eriksen Son Mane Sterling

                Kane (vc) Jiminez

                Bench -

                Foster
                Deeney
                Doherty
                Valery

So I will bench boost next game week, triple captain Kane against West Ham.

Will bank transfer the coming game week then downgrade Deeney after his double to Quanar and upgrade Dunk to VVD.

Then bank a further transfer to make two changes during the last game week dependant on the title race etc.

think bilva is a bad choice, rather downgrade him and get laporte. city conceded 10 shots on target since gw25

                  1. bench boost for every gamew…

wow that´s few, but have in mind playing b-sides in West ham, Watford, Bournemouth and Everton and an out of sorts Chelsea. Fulham and cardiff and the numbers are not really more than it should be. i hate spanish speaking managers that just give a feck in games vs City and just rolls out a reserve team. Sorry for rant, Pool supporter.

Here is my WC. Ranked at 10k

                Lloris
                Robertson, Duffy, Dunk
                Sterling, Eriksen, Mane, Doherty
                Kane, Deeney, Jimenez

                Foster, Jota, JWP Valery

                0.3m itb.

Idea is to maybe swap Duffy to Kolasanic next week.

Deeney loves a goal against Arsenal!!

which youll eventually need to get good defenders in for those brighton players
