Hazard delivers parting gift as FPL sales continue ahead of Gameweek 34

The final match of Blank Gameweek 33 was all about one man: Eden Hazard.

The Monday night game at Stamford Bridge might well have been the swansong for Chelsea’s assets in many Fantasy squads this season, given that the Blues have trips to Liverpool and Manchester United in two of their next three league matches.

Maurizio Sarri’s side also only have one fixture in Gameweek 35, when eight teams – including four of the “big six” – have two.

Just like Jamie Vardy did on Saturday, however, Hazard delivered a 16-point haul to make the decision to offload the Belgian that little bit harder.

Chelsea 2-0 West Ham United

  • Goals: Eden Hazard (£11.1m) x2
  • Assists: Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.2m), Ross Barkley (£5.1m)

Maurizio Sarri paid tribute to Eden Hazard (£11.1m) after the Belgian winger delivered arguably one of his finest performances – perhaps even the best – of 2018/19 in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over West Ham United.

Hazard found the back of the net on two occasions on Monday evening (his first a Goal of the Season candidate) and Sarri told a post-match press conference:

Hazard, of course, played a wonderful match. He scored an incredible goal. When Hazard is able to play like he did in the last two matches, of course, it’s easier. We can win against every team.

Hazard has been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid in the summer and, when asked if Chelsea could afford to lose their talismanic midfielder, Sarri replied:

From a technical point of view, no, not at the moment. It’s impossible to find another Hazard. At the moment there isn’t another Hazard. His level is so high in all the world I think you can find two [other] players like Hazard.

I hope Hazard can stay here, otherwise, we have to try something different.

I am sure the club doesn’t want to sell him but of course, we all have to respect his decision. He is in his last season of contract. If he wants to have another experience we have to respect it. We will try of course in every way to convince him but it’s not easy.

He told me that he has to decide [on his future].

Cold statistics sometimes don’t tell the full story of how well a player has performed but the underlying attacking data paints an accurate picture of just how superior Hazard was to everyone else on show: the Belgian ranked first for attempts on goal, shots on target, efforts in the box, key passes, crosses, take-ons and penalty box touches.

Hazard also registered more than twice as many touches in the final third as the next-most-involved player.

From the moment Angelo Ogbonna (£4.2m) was booked for desperately hauling down Hazard in the tenth minute, the Belgian was electric.

His first goal was, like his strikes against Wolves and Brighton, all his own work.

Collecting the ball from Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.2m) about 40 yards out, Hazard dodged and weaved his way past five West Ham shirts before slotting past Lukasz Fabianski (£4.8m) to put Chelsea 1-0 up.

Hazard’s first touch and vision were excellent all evening and there was no sign of any fatigue as we approach a busy final month of 2018/19, with the Belgian looking sharp whenever he received the ball.

There could well have been other attacking returns: Gonzalo Higuain (£9.5m) cracked the upright following a Hazard pass, while Callum Hudson-Odoi (£4.2m) stung the fingertips of Fabianski following another glorious through-ball from the premium FPL midfielder.

Hazard himself whistled a 47th-minute effort just wide of Fabianski’s left-hand post while Marko Arnautovic (£6.8m) was perhaps fortunate not to concede a penalty following a rather robust shoulder barge on the Chelsea winger.

The Belgium international got a well-deserved second goal when converting a Ross Barkley (£5.1m) pass late on.

This is already Hazard’s best season for FPL attacking returns (28 – 16 goals, 12 assists) while he trails Mohamed Salah (£13.2m) by one solitary point in the overall standings.

Raheem Sterling (£11.5m) is the only outfield player with a better rate of points per matches this season, meanwhile.

Hazard is, by quite some distance, already the most-sold player of Gameweek 34.

With so many other premium options enjoying easier run-ins and two fixtures in Double Gameweek 35, the mass exodus will likely continue but it’s sod’s law that the Belgian is finally hitting a purple patch after a barren three months or so.

Away from Hazard, there were some noteworthy displays.

Hudson-Odoi and Loftus-Cheek were handed second successive league starts and produced positive (if completely overshadowed) performances, with Loftus-Cheek especially impressing in central midfield with his physicality and link-up play with Hazard.

The recalled Higuain again frustrated, though, both from a Fantasy owner and Chelsea fan’s perspective.

The Argentinean’s touch was often loose and his pass completion percentage was the joint-lowest among Chelsea’s 11 starters, with several moves breaking down due to his waywardness.

Ryan Fredericks (£4.5m) blocked one goalbound effort after Higuain delayed his attempt too long and apart from the aforementioned shot from a narrow angle that struck the post, the premium forward didn’t trouble Fabianski again.

Higuain for Olivier Giroud (£7.7m) was one of only two changes that Sarri made, with Antonio Rudiger (£5.9m) replacing Andreas Christensen (£5.0m) in his other alteration.

Chelsea are next in action on Thursday against Slavia Prague and Sarri promised rotation for that match when interviewed after the game.

The former Napoli head coach said:

Now we have a very hard week. We have to play in 72 hours in the Europa League, then after 72 hours in Liverpool.

Probably now we have 20 players ready to play, unlike three months ago, so for sure we will have to change the starting XI in the Europa League.

Chelsea’s backline recorded their eighth clean sheet in 11 league matches at Stamford Bridge but after barely being troubled in the opening 45 minutes, the Blues faced more of a test after the interval.

Manuel Pellegrini had started with Arnuatovic on the right wing for this London derby but moved the Austrian up front in the second half, sacrificing Javier Hernandez (£6.1m) for Robert Snodgrass (£5.0m) at the break.

The return to a 4-1-4-1 after half-time prompted a better display from the Hammers, with Arnautovic going close with a blocked header, Aaron Cresswell (£5.0m) firing a shot narrowly wide and Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5.4m) finally forced into action by shots from Manuel Lanzini (£6.4m) and the improved Felipe Anderson (£7.0m).

Pellegrini said after full-time:

We improved a lot in the second half. We had opportunities, and we could have drawn the game but finally, they scored the second goal.

I think the difference was in the first 45 minutes, that we didn’t start the game with the pace that you need to play.

When a player with the quality of Hazard, you know he can make different things. Going between four players is not easy, so maybe we could have been more aggressive. That was our attitude in the first 45 minutes, in the way we defended that goal and the way we played.

After that, I think we changed a lot of things, in the pace we played and the part of the pitch we played in too. We played forward and not so close to our box, and we had the chances to draw.

Better performance or not, West Ham still haven’t scored a goal from open play away from home in 2019 and are winless in seven fixtures on their travels – food for thought for those looking at assets from Manchester United and Spurs, who are the Hammers’ next two opponents on the road.

Pellegrini also cleared up why substitute Samir Nasri (£5.0m) didn’t come on after seemingly being readied for introduction at the interval:

Samir was going to start in the second half but in the warm-up felt a muscle injury in his calf, so he was not confident to play. We’ll see how it is tomorrow.

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): Kepa; Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Emerson; Kante, Jorginho, Loftus-Cheek (Barkley 70′); Hudson-Odoi (Pedro 85′), Higuain (Giroud 76′), Hazard.

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Fabianski; Fredericks, Balbuena, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Noble (Obiang 70′), Rice; Arnautovic, Lanzini, Anderson; Hernandez (Snodgrass 46′).

Which players on the WC would you consider as ‘safe’ in terms of starts and potential returns?

    Pogba and Doucoure type ‘safe’

Deeney, kane and Jimenez is a nice 'safe' frontline. Eriksen is relatively safe. Lots of defenders are safe. Don't like the pogba or doucoure pick. Neither are that advanced at the moment.

Ederson, Duffy, Valery, Coady, Redmond also safe.

Hearing different things about Doucoure and his role, got him in at present but open to change.

Boly, Duffy, dunk - safe like many centre backs.

Doucoure is safe and a great option imo. Even when he's not advanced, he pops up regularly enough.

      Kane

Officially as long as part of the foot is touching the line even just part of the heel with most of the foot still over the line it's OK. .

Think they could grab a clean sheet in 34. Bournemouth and Cardiff are poor on the road and Brighton have only conceded 16 goals at home all season. 35 is a lottery. Maybe a random attacking return or save points will save the day.

I'm going for dunk and Duffy personally.

Agree on the defending but what impressed me in addition to the dribble was his calm finish with a potential leg breaker of a tackle incoming at the end! Not many players in the world can score a goal like that imo (albeit it was against WHU)!

How are players planning on bringing Salah back in GW36?

It seems to be the main question of my WC team. It means downgrading the likes of Lloris and JWP, so I can make sure I can upgrade Eriksen. But that takes away from the benefits of BB.

Are folk swapping out Sterling instead? He’s got a good run of fixtures and I’m scared to lose him for the run in. Or is it a wait and see, figure out when I get there kinda scenario?

I got all that from being a liverpool fan who watches every game and knows he's a confidence player. With his mojo back I expect a goal a game for the rest of the season with a few nice hauls in their for those who keep the faith.

Keyboard psychology here but is one goal really enough to get your confidence back? Ofc he'll feel a lot better but I don't think one goal against Southampton will have him feeling like Salah of last season. Having said that I'll be leaving funds for a quick Sterling->Salah transfer for GW36 depending on how Porto and Chelsea go.

It's clearly been weighing him down that he's not scored for a while. I think the interview after the game with sky revealed a lot. He looked confident and I'm not a psychologist either but goalscorers love scoring and I'm sure that goal will spur him on!

For the first time in my FPL life, I will WC knowing that I will take a hit to acquire Salah back. To my mind, no team cann have Kane, Salah, Agu and Sterling at the same time; It would have to mean a red arrow. You have to make a choice. So I will go Kane and Sterling as my expensive stars, and then switch to Agu and Salah in GW36. I cannot risk being without Kane in GW34 and Salah inn GW36 and do not want to ruin my team trying to squeeze in both. There will be ample points elsewhere as well.

I'm liking this logic. It improves your BB team not having Salah and also if things go ok you could roll your 35 transfer and get Salah back in for free. TC then in 36.....i'm at the game. Cannot wait 🙂

I never sold my "best" (or feeling wise most believed-in) player at a WC only to plan to get him back inn a fortnight, but at 13.2 I feel I must sell Salah if I feel I have to get Kane in. You cannot BB with 1/4 of your budget on 2 players and you can captain only a single one of them.

My plan is to either have him from this week or transfer him in for GW36.

If I go without him on wildcard my midfield will be Sterling, KDB, Eriksen, Son & Jota.
I will save my FT in 35 and transfer out 2 of these mids to get him. Makes it really easy to get him in if you have 4 premium mids.

For eg I can do Son & KDB to Salah & Hojbjerg. This also means I won't have any benching headaches after my BB35.

Makes sense. Means you have the Salah funds invested for GW 35 and an amazing bench to boot.

Probably going to compose a WC team with Salah, then actually go with the same team but with someone else for GW34/35 only in place of Salah and the money ITB to then get Salah for TC in GW36. Leaves options open in case I want to/need to do something different, plus means I can get him with 1 FT rather than 2, as I may well need/want the extra FT elsewhere as bound to be an injury/suspension/dropping somewhere else within my squad.

That was my original plan, but as pointed out above, you're losing all that value that could be spent on your bench, at the time you need it most. But then as you say, you'll be better prepared come GW36 and not have to take a hit/burn transfers.

Is this Hot Topic perhaps ignoring the need for Salah in GW35 as well as GW36?

I'm not ignoring it as such. It's definitely still a viable strategy. I was just trying to get a sense of how people are approaching it for the next few weeks.

It's very easy to say Salah in, or out, but harder to make a plan for a 13.2 player.

I brought him back in this week on wildcard in a Sterling hokey-cokey which was sort of the plan but sidestepped Mane in the end and will now keep him. No way am I watching Liverpool-Huddersfield GW36 without the two players I've had since the start.

I'm even considering not keeping Aguero too since my midfield looks a bit light with Kane in. Deeney for Aguero gives me Kane, Deeney and Salah in consecutive weeks vs Hudderfield as captain options although I will probably captain Jimenez for DGW35.

Go without Salah on WC 34, have a proper BB squad for GW 35
      Save transfer in GW 35
2 FTs should be enough to get Salah for 36

That’s the plan. Means going without Vardy though, as he’d have been my GW 35 transfer all going well.

      See ya Mo!

Liverpool look rubbish in attack. They move the ball slowly and try these clipped balls into the penalty area that never work. Everything changed for them after the defeat to Man City IMO. The defence is conceding more and they are not creating as many good chances.

Doesn't help that Salah is meant to be a RW, but keeps drifting central so that Liverpool have all but stopped creating chances down the right hand side unless TAA puts in a cross from deep.

Compare them to Man City. When Man City play you genuinely think they could put 3 or 4 past anyone. They just have this aggressive tempo that is unrelenting.

The biggest thing is just watching and not owning a City or Liverpool player. When you watch City and don't have a City player who are sh***ing yourself as they look dangerous. When you watch Liverpool and don't have a Liverpool player who are still nervous, but no way near as bad as with City.

Personally would like to see Liverpool shift their formation / personnel to the below:

        Alisson
        TAA Matip VVD Robbo
        Milner Keita Wijnaldum
        Firmino Salah Mane

Fabinho is terrible. He just does not protect the back 4 and lacks mobility. Henderson is better than Fabinho. Shaqiri is a great impact sub, but looks like he has done something to offend Klopp. Ox returning would be massive as he is dynamic and has a good work rate and is a good replacement for Milner's ageing legs.

Chips & DGW's, an alternative view

I really don't have the dedication or patience of some of the best players to plan weeks or even months in advance so I prefer to wing it, take hits and punts. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but it's rarely dull. My style of play (29 hits so far) and the numbers playing now mean I'll never hit the dizzy heights (2k and 8k) of my best finishes again but I've seen enough DGW's blow up in peoples face to know they are often a huge disappointment so decided to play my chips early and negotiate the doubles with a few (more) hits. I think it's fair to say it's worked very well for me. I realise a lot of luck is also involved.

    BB gw1 - 94pts gwr 39k
    FH gw7 - 93pts gwr 7k (or 136k - 19k)
    TC gw25 96pts Aguero TC

Despite having no chips I'm had 5 consecutive green arrows over the blank/dgw period and really doubt I could have done better holding onto my chips. Sort of a long boast post, but also just pointing out that the group think on how to play chips is not always the best.
I get that it often is though 😉

Absolutely. Putting yourself in the right place at the right time creates the opportunity of luck. Those who get luck once in a while moan others get lucky more often. But it is those who put themselves in the position to be lucky more often. Have to buy a ticket to win the lottery. GL with your treatment btw.

It's mostly skill but luck can make or break you. Just captaining the right player a few times can make a massive difference. I've got it mostly wrong this season. It's chip strategy that's helped me salvage my season, that's all I know.

You're obviously good at this but maybe your choices this year just happened to all pay off.

      Same front three as me.

Don’t think Spurs defence/keeper is good value. They won’t shut out City, so it’s effectively a SGW v Brighton for them.

By the same token, are Brighton going to shut out Spurs? If not, and it’s unlikely they will, it’s a SGW for them v Wolves, who will probably score too.

I get they play Bournemouth and Cardiff this GW but Cardiff are fighting for their lives and anything can happen when Bournemouth are playing. Doubling up on their defence smacks of DGW fever.

Defence is the hardest WC conundrum for me to sort out because, other than Watford, I really don’t fancy any of the DGW defenders to get much.

        Cheers for the response.

I get what you are saying about spurs but I fancy their fixtures for the rest of the season not just the double and felt that lloris was a better option than trippier/Laporte in defence.

I agree that Brighton's gameweek 35 is poor but I'm really banking on at least 1 clean sheet in 34 which I think theres a decent chance for.

Defence has been the hardest spots to fill for me too and I've ended up just going cheap. Kolasinac is the one I've been tempted with but arsenal's poor away record has really out me off!

I love him too, but can’t trust him to start every game.

Arsenal’s away form I’d poor and that’s possibly a deciding factor. I may yet get him, as I think Doherty is going to get rested in one of the DGW fixtures too.

4 sgw players could be one too many but I assume you will atleast make 1 more trade to a dgw player for 35. On wc, I would choose TAA over Robbo and invest elsewhere or save for future upgrade.

I think there’s plenty decent SGW players for 35 especially if you’re playing BB.

Spurs, Man City, Arsenal, Wolves and Man Utd all basically play each other, which somewhat neuters their appeal.

Meanwhile, Liverpool play Cardiff, Chelsea play Burnley and in form Leicester play West Ham.

People will go chasing DGW players who’ll be rested for one game and do naff all in the other whilst guys like Vardy, Haz, Mo and Mané will haul away!

      He's stats people's dream.

But not for me. He does everything right except finishing.
      Jwp/Deulofeu much better options imo

WC team at present and transfer plan.

    Ederson,Foster
    Duffy, Toby, Robertson, Valery, Coady
    Redmond, Salah, Son, Doucoure, Knockaert
    Kane, Firmino, Deeney

Try to save in week 35
    36: Duffy to Shaw
37: Knockaert and Dourcoure to CHO and Martial
    38: Vanity transfer

    0.2 spare for price rises.
    Thoughts on this?

Really, I don't think it is that different to a lot that I've seen on here. A bit of a hedge against my league rival though as well, I have a lead to protect.

Thought on best DGW35 triple captain?

I'm going for an unconventional BB 34, TC 35 and keeping hits to a minimum..

What happens to Wolves now they had that FA Cup loss?
I want a FPL question time on this.
        Got Deeney instead at present.

Thoughts on this WC draft? Actually have enough ITB (0.8) to do JWP > Doucoure/Delofeu but I'm not sure about tripling up on a middling side like Watford.

    Ryan - Foster
    Robbo - Duffy - Doherty - Valery - AWB
    Salah - Sterling - Son - JWP - Camasara
    Kane - Deeney - Jiminez

No WC, plans for weeks ahead:

-4 already this week, Boruc and Rice out, Ryan and Duffy in
    Duffy (C) this week

GW35 - Perreira, King and McNeil out (-8)
    Lindelof, Jiminez, Deulofeu in
    Bench boost with this:

    Pat / Ryan
    Lindelof / Robbo / Duffy/ AWB / Bednarek
    Salah / Mane / Hazard / JWP / Deulofeu
    Aguero / Jiminez / Wilson

GW36 - Hazard out, Sterling in, Triple Captain Salah

GW37 - Mane, Wilson out, Rashford, Pogba or Martial in (-4)

GW38 - Ryan out, Gunn in

    Boom shack a lacka

After a sea of almost identical FH32 teams I was expecting a little more variety on these WC34 teams. But it seems like almost every team I see is some combination of about 23 same players.

My WC team makes no exception here, btw.

So that's the WC sorted. Now to finalise the Starting XI for this week.

    It's all go, isn't it?

How's this one looking? Plenty of big attackers but maximum risk at the back

    Ryan, Gunn
    TAA, Doherty, Duffy, Dunk, Valery
    Mane, Eriksen, Sterling, Jota, Hojbjerg
    Kane, Aguero, Jiménez

No risk no reward. I like it tbh. Only Watford I could not see.
