What the top 10k’s Wildcard squads look like for Double Gameweek 34

It was all-change among the top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers for Double Gameweek 34 as Wildcards were deployed en masse.

62.56% of those at the very top of the worldwide rankings hit the button to get themselves a new squad this weekend.

That means just under 5% of the top 10k have the Wildcard left in their pocket.

Such heavy attention for the Wildcard chip at this level means that the Triple Captain was left largely untouched.

With Brighton and Cardiff the only sides playing twice in Double Gameweek 34, it is understandable that only 0.65% of the top 10k deployed that particular chip.

The Bench Boost remains in reserve for 83.78% of the world’s current highest-ranked managers, with Double Gameweek 35 expected to be the popular time to use it.

The Wildcard was also the most popular chip overall, but was used by considerably fewer.

Just 3.84% of all FPL managers played it for Double Gameweek 34.

The top 10k managers who played their Wildcard this week have sensibly spread their funds around their new squads in preparation for the upcoming deployment of the Bench Boost.

They have gone cheap in goal with Mat Ryan (£4.4m) and Ben Foster (£4.6m) both in at least 65% of Wildcard teams at this level.

Not surprisingly, Shane Duffy (£4.8m) was included in 91.38%, considerably more than second-most popular defender Yan Valery (£4.1m), selected by 61.99%.

Matt Doherty (£5.3m) and Aymeric Laporte (£6.0m) were both in roughly 50% of new teams, with two fixtures booked in for Double Gameweek 35.

With the potential for rotation of Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.5m) now that Joe Gomez (£4.8m) is nearing a return, Andrew Robertson (£6.8m) is the most popular Liverpool asset among the top 10k.

Harry Kane‘s (£12.6m) potentially season-ending injury has endeared the top 10,000 managers to Spurs options in midfield.

Son Heung-min (£8.7m) is by far the most popular player at this level, signed up by 97.07% of managers in the top 10k.

Meanwhile, Christian Eriksen (£9.3m) is the second most popular midfielder currently selected in 77.93% of Wildcard squads at this level.

Raheem Sterling (£11.5m), Diogo Jota (£6.1m) and Sadio Mané (£10.1m) also receiving plenty of attention.

The inclusion of the Senegalese international is indicative of the top 10k looking to save money on Mohamed Salah (£13.2m) in order to amplify a Bench Boost but remain invested in Liverpool’s fixtures, as they face Cardiff (away) and Huddersfield (home) soon.

Crucially, Wildcarders inside the top 10k, largely opted not to have Jamie Vardy (£9.2m) in spite of his recent excellent form.

At this stage, it would appear that was a smart call as the Leicester man blanked in Friday’s 1-0 defeat at home to Newcastle.

Instead, Raúl Jiménez (£6.8m), Sergio Aguero (£11.7m) and Troy Deeney (£5.9m) were the three most popular forwards in new-look sides at this level.

In a week where the captaincy debate was harder than ever, the top 10,000 were fairly convincing in who they thought the best candidate was.

Son, who is the most popular player among the top 10k, has been captained by 41.45% of the managers at that level.

That brings the South Korean’s effective ownership in the top 10k to 123%.

Duffy is the second favourite, captained by 22.72% to take his effective ownership to 94.39%.

It was the more established names that led the captaincy debate overall, but there was no particular standout option.

Aguero was backed by 18.14%, and Salah by 16.38%.

If any one seriously thinks Son or Eriksen is going to get rested tomorrow, I’d love to see your predicted Spurs line-up.

Son just might as they have half-passable alternatives but with Alli probably on the sidelines, I don't think Eriksen's place is in jeopardy.

It would probably mean both Moura and Llorente starting but it remains a possibility, especially in the context of Pochettino acknowledging the need for rotation.

I opted for Son on my WC so obviously I trust and wish him to play.

Good point, but think he is looking at Trippier, Alderweireld/Vertonghen and Rose. KWP, Sanchez and Davies to all come in.

Well it could be a front 3 of Moura, Son/Eriksen and Llorente with one of Son/Eriksen missing out. Its unlikely imho but possible

Owner of son, Trippier and Eriksen but I'm half expecting this tbh and relying on my Bench to bail Me Out. City 3 times in 2 weeks will cause rotation everywhere

probably not this season now. I don't really want to do the scoutcast without my nemesis. We will be doing the 295th episode (the episode that surpasses the number of Last of the summer wine episodes) which I think is next season sometime.

A change of philosophy which I have stuck by. Last season I got stubborn not owning Salah until the new year. The previous couple of years I have a decent rank.

Simply being more patient. Good players with good fixtures tend to do well. You don't need them all to do well each week just one or two. Then it is about covering your back by owning the key captaincy options. Finally it is about taking gambles against the grain at the right time. E.g. my bench boost.

Yeah I can see that, my best season, my first, i was very methodical and patient - now I’m very impatient and it hurts me. Keep going with what looks great on paper!

I also haven't been afraid to jump early on players I felt were going to go on a good run e.g. Pogba and Rashford after Cardiff and stayed clear of players I didn't trust like Walcott. Some of it has been luck but I think most made sense. Not owning Salah vs Bournemouth (and that period), going heavy on City attack when they had their bad run and Wilson at the beginning of the season has really hurt me in some weeks.

Hitting players purple patches is what it’s all about - I’ve definitely been way too slow this year and made far too many huge structural changes which just weren’t necessary- good luck for the closing stages

Thanks. I think one thing I have also learnt is the importance of a good team structure. Plus you can't have everyone. Last season I would have taken a -8 this week to fit in Eriksen and KDB. It probably wouldn't have paid off. This season I have taken the odd -4 but been a lot more disciplined.

Aye. Lacazette, for example, was withdrew early in the Europa league game, which bodes well for his Premier League starts. At just 11.3% ownership, and against an injury ridden Palace side in the double, I see him as a player many people missed out on buying on the WC.

Another early withdrawal in against Napoli and I'm even tempted to captain.

Same. He looks like my most likely captaincy pick. Before Everton he was in everybody's team. Now he is 11% owned. Looks a little knee jerky to me especially given the fixtures. I certainly prefer him over Deeney.

What players do you think will do well over next few weeks or could have been good picks, but that you couldnt fit into your WC? Perhaps they were too risky or too punty.

For me, I considered, with varying degrees of seriousness - Etheridge, Torreria, Schlupp, Sane, KWP, Rashford, Moutinho and Perieria.

If Arsenal reach Europa League final, but don’t finish in top 4

“In 2015–16 Emery led Sevilla to seventh position, having played the final games of the domestic league with several reserves and youth team players after the team confirmed their place in the Europa League final”

        It’s Burnley away GW38

Lacazette and Torreira's early withdrawal against Napoli suggest the league is still of huge importance to Emery.

But if they reach the final I take your point about the Burnley game. Something to be mindful of.

I know this will sound controversial, but I've said numerous times on this forum that this game is terribly slow at 1FT per week for 9 months and needs these gimmicks to hold attention. Yeah, everyone on here gloats about their late season charge but so much of it is because no one casual is even playing late in the season. That's the biggest problem with the game and why they need as many chips as possible. They need to get people making more transfers to sustain attention.

As has been mentioned before, wildcards / freehits etc are all basically the same...seem to encourage even more herd mentality ?

Maybe change transfers ? 2 FTs per week / or each transfer is a 4 point hit.....

To be fair Newcastle at home and West Ham away are great fixtures? Compared to Lacazette is in his price range and with Europa league etc, it could be argued that he’ll maybe only start 2, and with Arsenal’s away form then can see why folk kept Vardy

I've always thought of Newcastle as a tricky fixture for attacking returns, regardless of where they play. But I suppose we all have different ideas of what a strong fixture is in our heads.

West Ham is a great fixture for attacking returns, but not enough to turn my head away from the likes of Aguero Jimenez Deeney Lacazette Firmino Lukaku etc...

Just 8 PL games after arriving from the depths of MLS. Too early to make a call on him.

Gone for a GW33 differential as everyone has got similar players thought I'd gamble on couple 1 week punts. Siggy (C) and Calvert-Lewin. Fingers crossed.

I have gone for GW1 captain Mane, GW2 captain Aguero and GW5 Hazard. Fingers crossed.

Yeah me too, have a feeling Calvert-Lewin might outscore him though. Siggy does had 5 in 4 against Fulham

Just reading that J.Garcia and U.Emery were team mates 1995-96 at real social dads. Both have managed in Spain and Russia and both have managed Almería.
