What the top 10k’s Wildcard squads look like for Double Gameweek 34

It was all-change among the top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers for Double Gameweek 34 as Wildcards were deployed en masse.

62.56% of those at the very top of the worldwide rankings hit the button to get themselves a new squad this weekend.

That means just under 5% of the top 10k have the Wildcard left in their pocket.

Such heavy attention for the Wildcard chip at this level means that the Triple Captain was left largely untouched.

With Brighton and Cardiff the only sides playing twice in Double Gameweek 34, it is understandable that only 0.65% of the top 10k deployed that particular chip.

The Bench Boost remains in reserve for 83.78% of the world’s current highest-ranked managers, with Double Gameweek 35 expected to be the popular time to use it.

The Wildcard was also the most popular chip overall, but was used by considerably fewer.

Just 3.84% of all FPL managers played it for Double Gameweek 34.

The top 10k managers who played their Wildcard this week have sensibly spread their funds around their new squads in preparation for the upcoming deployment of the Bench Boost.

They have gone cheap in goal with Mat Ryan (£4.4m) and Ben Foster (£4.6m) both in at least 65% of Wildcard teams at this level.

Not surprisingly, Shane Duffy (£4.8m) was included in 91.38%, considerably more than second-most popular defender Yan Valery (£4.1m), selected by 61.99%.

Matt Doherty (£5.3m) and Aymeric Laporte (£6.0m) were both in roughly 50% of new teams, with two fixtures booked in for Double Gameweek 35.

With the potential for rotation of Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.5m) now that Joe Gomez (£4.8m) is nearing a return, Andrew Robertson (£6.8m) is the most popular Liverpool asset among the top 10k.

Harry Kane‘s (£12.6m) potentially season-ending injury has endeared the top 10,000 managers to Spurs options in midfield.

Son Heung-min (£8.7m) is by far the most popular player at this level, signed up by 97.07% of managers in the top 10k.

Meanwhile, Christian Eriksen (£9.3m) is the second most popular midfielder currently selected in 77.93% of Wildcard squads at this level.

Raheem Sterling (£11.5m), Diogo Jota (£6.1m) and Sadio Mané (£10.1m) also receiving plenty of attention.

The inclusion of the Senegalese international is indicative of the top 10k looking to save money on Mohamed Salah (£13.2m) in order to amplify a Bench Boost but remain invested in Liverpool’s fixtures, as they face Cardiff (away) and Huddersfield (home) soon.

Crucially, Wildcarders inside the top 10k, largely opted not to have Jamie Vardy (£9.2m) in spite of his recent excellent form.

At this stage, it would appear that was a smart call as the Leicester man blanked in Friday’s 1-0 defeat at home to Newcastle.

Instead, Raúl Jiménez (£6.8m), Sergio Aguero (£11.7m) and Troy Deeney (£5.9m) were the three most popular forwards in new-look sides at this level.

In a week where the captaincy debate was harder than ever, the top 10,000 were fairly convincing in who they thought the best candidate was.

Son, who is the most popular player among the top 10k, has been captained by 41.45% of the managers at that level.

That brings the South Korean’s effective ownership in the top 10k to 123%.

Duffy is the second favourite, captained by 22.72% to take his effective ownership to 94.39%.

It was the more established names that led the captaincy debate overall, but there was no particular standout option.

Aguero was backed by 18.14%, and Salah by 16.38%.

How different is your squad to the top 10k most owned wildcard picks? I have Kolo Alderweireld Martial Redmond instead of Doherty Robbo Jota Mane. Went for Duffy (c) too in the end when I see that Son was the more popular choice

My thinking is even if he is rested this week he'll be back for both games in the double and if he isn't rested he's a massive differential - then again... Pep roulette

Yeah, Emery tinkering has put me off. You just don't know who between Laca/Auba or both will start, Ramsey playing better but rotated as well. Ozil not doing enough FPL wise, Kola is a good pick but doesn't get enough CS's.

If i bring in one, probably Laca.

Vardy under Rodgers is the only striker in the league constantly supplied by 6 statistically proven attacking teammates

Two forever forward full backs and 4 attacking mids in a 4-1-4-1. The few times Pep used that formation, Agüero was brutal

Selling a player because he blanked against a good defence isn't exactly logic at work. It's last game bias. Similar to selling him for GW33 (if on FH32) because he blanked in the Burnley game - another good defence that doesn't suit his style - in GW31

Sell him because you feel, with little doubt, that the guy (or guys with the funds shifted elsewhere) you're buying will outscore Vardy vs West Ham (+ whomever else you may be selling)

I wouldn't hesitate to keep him if he had two matches. West Ham's welcoming defence should suit him but it's still takes some faith to keep him - and a long sofa when watching the others. (Foxes fan too)

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years
          4 years, 11 months ago

I understand. But replacements are hard to come by at that price
Laca has an amazingly consistent low ceiling and plays two matches that won't be strolls in the park for Arsenal. Every time Vardy under Rodgers has met a defence like West Ham, he's gotten 16 points (and should have had more)

Other than Laca/Firmino, you're staring down the barrel of a hit to spread the funds, if you used your wildcard in GW34. Either that or have loads of money in the bank to ship a midfielder for Salah/Mané in GW36, which isn't a bad idea... But you could just roll the transfer and have Vardy against West Ham... And maybe against Arsenal, who've had no away CS in EPL since Jan 2018

      3. KingOllie
        • 8 Years

I actually think Newcastle was the worst fixture of the 3.

West Ham (A) and Arsenal (H) are a lot better for Vardy. Id keep him if i had him

          Exactly!

Reminds me of talk of Salah over Mané because Mané blanked against Spurs and his former club (which he always does). Note: I have both

Same stats. Same heat maps Same player. Same formation. Same style. No injuries. Just "He didn't score in the last one/two games" *against good defences*, and fingers get itchy to sell

I had Firmino and swapped him for Vardy yesterday. Might prove to be a mistake (it is so far!) but I am keeping Vardy for WHU and then bring Firmino in after (if he still has form)

        2. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years

Hard to call, as Vardy is more advanced than Firmino. But yeah, Firmino has the better fixtures on paper

Issue I have with Firmino is that I like and have the top 3 FPL players from Liverpool. Aaaaand I'd cap any of 'em (yes, even Robbo) over Firmino. So that shows my faith in his ceiling

Still, if it's the best transfer you can make, go ahead. Doesn't count as a DGW transfer, though

I’m kind of regretting keeping, as with some jiggling in defence could have squeezed Aguero in. Personally I feel West Ham and arsenal (at home) are good fixtures.

Depending on injuries/form etc I’m considering freeing up funds to do Vardy > Lukaku for gw37/38 now, but still feel he could score around 20 pts over the next two gameweeks.

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years

Tried this plan as well, then realized I'd have to take two hits to facilitate that

Without a wildcard, I've planned/taken a total of -12 (-8 for GW34 and -4 for GW35) to set myself up for Jimenez TC. Two more hits to squeeze a differential in would be harmful, as I'm chasing

So I'm getting Rashford for Vardy in GW37 instead. Would enable me to get Shaw (GW37) and Martial (GW38) as well

Nice plan, Man Utd will likely need 6pts then to get top 4.

I’m thinking Lloris > Guaita in gw36, then Duffy/Vardy > Valery/Lukaku in Gw37. (As long as he looks ok for minutes), Lukaku has always been a small team bully.

PSG's owners are reportedly on the hunt for a Premier League club.

needs a big club to satisfy that criterion. Newcastle? Big club, great potential, fantastic fans. Or would they go for a big metropolis option like West Ham? I haven't a clue.

Not sure of that? They can’t own 2 champions league clubs so what’s the point? Not like they just fancy a bit of mid table championship fun is it? Unless they were to sell PSG...

Nottingham Forrest, Aston Villa or QPR were the 3 shortlisted

        Early transfer thoughts..

        Leno
        Duffy - Bednarek - Valery - Kola
        Sterling - JWP - Son - Salah
        Jimenez - Lacazette

        Ryan - Vardy - Tielmans - TAA

I have 3.3m in the bank. My original thought was Vardy > Aguero. Then bench either Bednarek or Duffy. My other thought was Vardy > Auba. Trading Lucas for a -4 has also crossed my mind and benching both Duffy and Bednarek but Inam not sure it is worth it. Tielmans to Eriksen could also work and switch him to Mane next week (and Hazard after that).

The most important thing is that I am playing my TC chip. I want the best captaincy option even if he isn't the best pick for the rest of the season.

Aguero certainly is the best shield to bring in. I am just not convinced he is the best pick for that week. The double up on the Arsenal attack keeps drawing me in. I am also considering a Llorente/Eriksen double up.

How do you think Arsenal's assets will be affected by the EL? You have invested heavily in them but they are looking good for an EL semi final spot.
No doubt that you will wait until you've seen all second leg results - you'll know what to do then. Good luck.

I had to wildcard the previous week as part of my strategy. It meant I had no option other than 6 Arsenal/Saints. Ths fixtures are good and they are great options. I would much rather Napoli have won 2-0 though. I think rotation hits all teams and most of the well owned assets will also be subject of rotation. I think my squad is good enough to suffer benching. I just don't want too many 1 pointers.

They need to keep winning in the league to stop their fantasy assets becoming rotation risks. If they lose 2 of the next three (which is possible) all their eggs will be in the one basket.

I am not sure that will happen. Wolves will be up for the game but Watford will be focussed on the Cup Final and Palace are on the beach. Brighton at home is a good fixture as well. I think they are well in contention for the top 4.

It’s what I planned before my setting my WC because I thought Kun may not start this week and Vardy would score against a Newcastle team that hadn’t kept a clean sheet away from home for 9 games since Hudds in Jan 🙁

          Ryan,
          Duffy,
          JWP,
          Valery.

Next week it's Newcastle and Watford away for Southampton and Spurs and Wolves away for Brighton. I don't see much points there.

BB in GW36 (I don't want Ryan, Vardy, Duffy and Knockeart in BB for 35)

3 Brighton play Newcastle at home in 36 and I can change Vardy to Firmino.

I used to think about single gw's only & take loads of hits.

I would have a far better OR if I did not but my ML is worth a lot of money if in top 4.

Ah ignore my above comment, I see your team here.

I think that’s a good shout, I’ve considered the same but it’s the GKs that are swinging me to GW35. Do you have TC left, if so, who would you TC?

              1. Eze Really?

I used TC last week and only have BB left.
If I had the chip now and wasn't chasing, I would probably TC Salah in 36. and BB in 35.
Then again I would not have kept Vardy and had only 2 Brighton.

                  Fair play.
BB36 looks better. If Brighton blank in gw35 & keep a CS 36 your chase will be successful.

Those that captained Vardy this week may suggest caution .... I would take a -4 or -8 and get a bumper bench for 35 🙂

I hear you. But Brighton vs Newcastle would not be benched anyway in 36.
I also think Vardy can score easily against opposition that does not park the bus.
taking -8 negates any BB advantage.

I don’t look at the bb as a single game week issue, but a team strategy over 34 & 35. I gambled on the likes of Son, Kun, Sterling etc being rested this week and my alternatives out scoring them to pay for the hits to bring them onto my bench next week 🙂

unfortunately I captained Vardy and the wheels have already fallen off 🙁

I did what you say, having made the decision on BB early. Otherwise I would have gone Lloris over Ryan etc.
I have already made my bed I think.
Unlucky with Vardy by the way.

However Watford play Wolves in 35 and i have seen some sides with 5/6 players in their FPL lineups.

Very confident with my Sterling captain. I think the same old things will be said after the double about brighton/duffy cappers and judgement being clouded by the dgw. Meanwhile Sterling will double return... I hope!! Can also see Son and Erksen doing well and being sonless is worrying me!!

I kinda wanted to keep him on WC, but the money spread wasn’t right. It’s the type of game he’ll get 16pts in.

It was only a bad decision in hindsight. You can't beat yourself up. For me with no obvious captain it was always going to be between the 2 most popular picks Duffy and Son. But Vardy was a worth punt for those wanting to do something different.

most non owners sat unsettled in their sofa´s yesterday so yes, even if it failed it was a sound decision to have him. My reasons to not own was simply i would not want to plan transfers and i don´t like my attacking players vs Newcastle-)

              I have no city players

I may contemplate sane for the double depending on who starts midweek but unlikely

I think the time to bring one in is after the double

Yeah not a bad shout that - I don’t like the fixtures. Spurs for the third time is more likely to be 0-0 than a goal fest

Utd could be any score but as a fan I don’t want to cheer on a city player for that game

Really like the risky WC team/strategy of the current no. 1
Targetting Fulham and Huddersfield fixtures for this and next GW 🙂

that's what I mean...both next week vs Fulham, triple Liverpool vs Cardiff and Deeney vs Huddersfield
This week DCL and Siggy vs Fulham. Lloris, Eriksen (c) and Son vs Huddersfield

I find it fascinating to be honest. It would have been so easy for him to shut up shop with the above template but he's still playing his own game. Great stuff.

I have tried this too, 3 Spurs v Hudds, Siggy v Fulham, Pogba v WHU this week, next week 2 Pool v Cardiff, 3 the next week v Hudds, two Mun U in 37 v Hudds & 2 Wolves v Fulham, 2 Soton in 38 v Hudds.

From GW34 onwards, I will make transfers based on Huddersfield and Cardiff's schedule but not the others. This make the game much easier.

Huddersfield yeah, but Cardiff are still fighting for their lives, so that will make them tricky opponents

this, I think they'll pose a threat to Brighton clean sheet for this reason this week

I’m playing a different game that the majority here.
I want to bench boost in GW37
I have my wildcard - and I am using my wildcard to set up my team for GW37.
              When do I wildcard.

I've gone with boring old double Brighton defence and Son (C) - one rival has triple Brighton defence, another has Duffy (C). Now I have mixed feelings about Brighton clean sheets
