Bournemouth make mockery of Brighton defensive assets

It was absolute carnage in the Fantasy Premier League community on Saturday afternoon as Brighton were thrashed 5-0 at home by Bournemouth.

It was their heaviest ever defeat at the Amex Stadium, which came at just the wrong time for Fantasy managers.

Not only were the Seagulls’ heavily backed for their Double Gameweek, but the Cherries had also been widely declared as ‘on the beach’ already.

What impact this shocking result will have on our plans is the focus of this latest Scout Notes article.

Brighton 0-5 Bournemouth

Goals: Dan Gosling (£4.7m), Ryan Fraser (£6.3m), David Brooks (£5.1m), Callum Wilson (£6.6m), Junior Stanislas (£6.0m)

Assists: Wilson x2, Fraser x2, Brooks

Bournemouth’s attacking assets made a mockery of the popular decision to back the Brighton defence in Double Gameweek 34. 46.17% of managers ranked 10,000 or higher currently own both Mat Ryan (£4.4m) and Shane Duffy (£4.8m) this weekend, with 22.72% handing the captain’s armband to the centre-back – and all of those are already one clean sheet down on the deal.

It was Bournemouth who started Saturday afternoon’s meeting at the Amex Stadium the better side. An achievement made all the more damning on Brighton’s defence considering how poor the Cherries have been on their travels this season. This was only the second time since Gameweek 11 that Bournemouth scored more than once on the road. The last time they did that in the selected period was at Huddersfield Town in Gameweek 30, who are now relegated from the Premier League.

Dan Gosling (£4.7m) found himself in far too much space in the first-half to slot past Ryan after being fed the ball by Callum Wilson (£6.6m). It was an impressive finish from Ryan Fraser (£6.2m) in the second-half that unlocked the Seagulls’ floodgates, but again, he was given far too much time to take his shot after picking the ball up from a poor pass at the back.

At that point, Bournemouth could smell the blood in the water and they swarmed around Brighton’s poorly defended goal like sharks. Next up it was David Brooks (£5.0m) who slotted home unchallenged before Wilson got his goal with minimal effort. Substitute Junior Stanislas (£6.0m), again in far too much space, completed the rout late on.

“We came up against a very dynamic Bournemouth side and couldn’t handle them. We started okay but didn’t create much and then from our possession they scored four goals on the counter. We changed the shape but then went down to ten men (Anthony Knockaert red card) which makes it even harder. We found it very difficult to cope with them. It’s certainly not something we have experienced before. Anything like that would have been against one of the top teams (Liverpool 1-5, Chelsea 0-4).” – Chris Hughton

This result has put significant pressure on the Brighton defence to secure Fantasy returns at home to Cardiff on Tuesday night. Those who have captained Duffy will especially be carrying that weight over the next few days. The fact that the Bluebirds will be in more of a desperate need for points than their hosts midweek, after losing at Burnley on Saturday, it does not bode well.

“We have to take it on the chin, our worst defeat and worst overall performance. There is no doubt they (players) know how poor a performance it was today. Everybody will be looking, mostly me, to see the type of reaction from the team.” – Chris Hughton

Brighton have generally been better defensively at home this season compared to what they are capable of away. For that reason, interest in options such as Ryan, Duffy and the like for Double Gameweek 35 will have plummeted after Saturday’s heavy defeat. They must travel to Spurs and Wolves in that round of fixtures and, unless a positive result can be secured against Cardiff, they will do so with confidence at rock-bottom.

Not surprisingly, Brighton’s attacking assets barely troubled Bournemouth. The Seagulls came into this match joint-bottom for big chances in their four previous outings, and that trend continued. They managed just one shot on target

Those who had turned to Glenn Murray (£6.4m) were left disappointed as Chris Hughton’s tendency to rotate him in busy periods also continued. He was named on the bench with Florin Andone (£5.0m) handed the centre-forward berth. The veteran forward will probably start against Cardiff, but like most of his colleagues, has it all to do to make investing in him a worthwhile move.

Jurgen Locadia (£5.3m) and Anthony Knockaert (£5.2m) were the two wide attackers flanking Murray and Brighton’s chances of getting a result against Bournemouth, and indeed against Cardiff, were damaged by the latter’s frustration in the second half. He was sent off for a reckless and needlessly forceful late tackle on Adam Smith (£4.3m) in the 68th minute. Because it was a dismissal for serious foul play, it means that he misses the next three matches, which are Cardiff (home), Wolves (away) and Spurs (away).

“I have no idea what Anthony Knockaert is thinking. He is a second-and-a-half late. It’s a disgusting challenge and it could have been a career-ending tackle.” – Dion Dublin, BBC

“I’ve seen far worse challenges. I would accept it’s a reckless, emotional challenge. He is aware that he has let the team down.” – Chris Hughton

It was telling that Brighton’s first shot on target came from left-back Bernardo (£4.2m) late in the second half. They really offered nothing going forward and none of their players managed a higher expected goal involvement (xGI) score of 0.12, shared by Yves Bissouma (£4.6m) and Locadia.

By contrast, Bournemouth not only laughed in the face of claims that Brighton were in decent defensive form but were also defiant against suggestions that they are now ‘on the beach’. Despite winning just one game in their last nine, the Cherries turned on the style at the Amex Stadium, especially in the second half.

Josh King (£6.6m) had more shots in the box than any other player, Brooks created the most chances, with Fraser just one behind him for key passes, and Wilson showed all-round appeal with his goal and two assists. As plenty of managers expected to look at players with two fixtures in Double Gameweek, it might not be a bad move to consider a Bournemouth attacker for their home match against Fulham.

“Our goals today were trademark us, which was the pleasing thing. The first goal was a great team goal and it was nice to see Dan [Gosling] score. In the second half, we gelled and linked up well around the box so I’ll enjoy watching the goals back later tonight.” – Eddie Howe

Brighton and Hove Albion XI (4-3-3): Ryan; Bernardo, Dunk, Duffy, Montoya; Pröpper (Izquierdo 63′), Stephens, Bissouma; Locadia, Andone (Murray 58′), Knockaert.

Bournemouth XI (3-4-1-2): Boruc; Aké, S Cook (Simpson 87′), Mepham; Fraser, Lerma, Gosling, A Smith; Brooks; Wilson (Stanislas 83′), King (Solanke 76′).

The sickener about this week isn’t even the Brighton defence debacle, it’s the fact that players who non Wildcarders would have been forced to keep did so well (I.e. Fraser and Wilson). And don’t get me started on Pogbas brace of penalties whilst never venturing out of his own half.

Wasn't on wildcard haha, so bench boost next week will need a few hits.

Despite the fact i never contemplated selling either this week, if i had a wildcard I definetly would have sold just because 'wow shiny new things'.

I'm one of those. Kept Fraserm Wilson and Pogba and smashed the ranks, but absolutely understand the plot twist on this and how this game can be cruel.. Got caught on the Sane fiasco

Ye if you didn’t have a wildcard I’d completely understand keeping them (even though you’d probably agree you would rather not have had them). Yet huge huge rank boost. Loads of non Wildcarders will be in the same position.

Also it’s such a big point swing it mitigates any gain Wildcarders will have next week

Pogba got MotM from the press for scoring 2 pens and walking around the pitch. 2 penalties that shouldn’t have happened too. Mata trips over his own legs then Martial was offside. Definite top 6 bias in officials we have a history of laughable decisions against Liverpool and Chelsea too

So if they always get big decisions, maybe don't ship their main penalty taker on WC just because someone else has two fixtures?

United are going out of the CL. They have to concentrate on the league.

I did, sorry for focusing on that, but it's the whole picture I mean. To win big on a DGW WC you have to gamble that players who have previously been doing well are suddenly going to stop. E.g. Yes Pogba has been poor recently, but WCers were getting rid of him before he played a terrible West Ham team at home.

So short-sighted. You can plan ahead by "blowing" a wildcard early. It could very sensibly have been used to cover the BGWs for example.

Something like this happens almost every season. Two fixtures in a gameweek doesn't guarantee two lots of good performances and decent points. Brighton are rubbish. Are we that surprised, really?

I got rid of Pogba because he is back to playing defensive midfield with no attacking input. The irony is it was proved correct but he still scored 2 penalties. You have to laugh otherwise you’d cry!

But the season is not over yet. I'm sure WCers made their team for GW34-38 and not just one or two weeks.

Sometime we get instant returns and sometime one or two weeks late.

At the very least as a wildcarder I'm looking at weeks 34 and 35 as a block. This week laid the groundwork to maximise the chances of a successful wk35.

That’s because you have presumably used (/wasted) your bench boost earlier in the season?

Used it earlier as I knew my TV is always sh*t and wont be able to afford a decent bench in any week plus it reduces flexibility with planning

(whether it was successful or not, I dont know)

Not even half way through the week

Some people without WC did huge hits

Of course Wildcarders will make gains on noon Wildcarders next week but a number of non Wildcarders (with good OR) have made such big gains (Fraser, Wilson, Pogba, no Brighton defence) that it’s hard to make all of that back next week let alone gain.

Effectively what I’m saying is that the only way to conceivably own Wilson and Fraser for their huge hauls this week was to not wildcard. No one here can really claim they’d have kept on wildcard

Sterling and Aguero both to start and haul big - one time!

I’ve partly gone sterling and aguero due to your posting about them so hope you’ve got both too!

Of course if both are benched and then hazard puts on a masterclass then my wildcard is a disaster regardless of next week!

We all wildcard this week so we can use bench boost next week. But realistically how many points do we expect from bb ? We all dream of massive points, but with weak players like Southampton and Brighton on our bench, bb will probably contribute 16 points or so.Over 20 if you are lucky. We have to compromise on our team this week so we can play bench boost next week which has probably lost us 20 points if you had Brooks,Wilson Fraser Pogba etc.Throw in the fact you are selecting your dgw team a week early and taking a gamble on injuries form etc then im starting to think bench boost is a bit of a trap and might be better played on a sgw early in the season.

Ha.Yes.Whether we mean to or not we all get dragged along with the crowd on what the best decisions on certain things are.We are told bb is best played on a dgw but i cant recall ever getting a big haul from it.Next season i am deffo thinking of playing it on a single gameweek, maybe even gw1.

So after the horror show yesterday I’m thinking of making the below transfers for a -8:

Sigurdsson and Vardy out for Redmond and Lacazette.

Will leave me with the below (*players have 2 games)

    Foster*
    Chillwell, Lindelof*, Boly*
    Redmond*, Son*, Mane, Hazard
    Jiminez*, Lacazette*, Aguero*

    Bench- Steklenberg, Tielemans, Dunk. Duffy.

    Good to Go?

Quick question guys.. I had the exact money to do Vardy to deeney and kdb to salah.. I done the move for deeney and have that money left itb .. was that a good move as I didn’t want deeney to rise and then be out priced on salah?

Hard to say so early on, last week I did Son and Kane IN for a hit and neither started against Huddersfield! With both KDB and Salah having champions league games, you risk an injury like what happened to me. You should be good though surely.

I bought in Duffy/ Ryan on WC expecting some points in GW34 but not a lot in DGW with my BB. But I'm thinknig now maybe I should get shot of at least 1 on FT

What are you doing if in the same position? I'm thinking Duffy -> Watford or Southampton defender

I’d wait for the week to end and then decide.

I’m sure I knew going into this week I’d be doing a Brighton defender to someone but may as well see everything happen first.

I’m in the same situation, tempted to hold on for Fulham.. The fact he got a clean sheet and Begovic conceded 5 in 2 is possibly a good sign he’ll stay in

          1. Eytexi
            • 5 Years
            5 years, 4 days ago

I reckon he plays but i dont back him against a Fulham team playing sith nothing to lose. There's no reason they couldn't put two past Bournemouth like they did to Everton leaving Boruc on one point.

Foster, on the other hand, should grab a clean sheet against Huddersfield at a minimum.

        2. QuintonFortune25
          • 7 Years
          5 years, 4 days ago

I mean it depends on if that transfer would be better used elsewhere. It might pay off, but I'd be looking at other issues you might need to fix in your squad first.

            • 5 Years

Instead of Boruc to Foster i could do Chilwell to any Watford defender, but i feel Chilwell & Foster are both more nailed than Boruc & any Watford defender.

Begovic almost highhandedly responsible for Burnely loss, worst keeper display I've seen all season.
I doubt he's coming in for the last four games of the season after Boruc comes back in and keeps CS.

Thinking I might hold Vardy for GW35 (whu) then switch to Rashford for the final three game weeks (CHE, hud, CAR).

United MUST win the Chelsea game and hopefully like last season Rashford will have a big part to play in that. Then the final two games speak for themselves. What do you reckon?

If I want salah for gw36 I should do alisson --> ederson this week as I have 3x liverpool defence. And this dgw ederson has higher chance to pay off the move.
And I'm worried about salah's gametime as they have too many games + barcelona near that time.
Confused. Don't know whether should I plan to bring in salah or not

    1. QuintonFortune25
      • 7 Years
      5 years, 4 days ago

Yeah it's not the worst idea, even if Man City dont keep any clean sheets in GW35 you'll at least have 4 points, or 2 points less than what Alisson will get at best. Wait to see on Ederson though, I saw on social media he was laid in bed with a leg brace or something, so just check up on that.

With the obvious caveat of fixtures still to play, which of theses moves looks better?

    Lloris / Foster
    Robertson / Laporte / Duffy / Dunk / Valery
    Salah / Eriksen / Son / Jota / Hojberg
    Aguero / Vardy / Jimenez

    A) Vardy > Deeney
    B) Vardy/Duffy > Firmino/Cathcart (-4)
    C) Duffy/Dunk > Kola + Kiko/Yoshida (-4)

I'm aiming for double LIV attack for either GW35 or GW36, latter more likely, but undecided on Mané / Firmino.
