Sterling stars as De Bruyne jumps back on FPL radars

Raheem Sterling (£11.5m) may have been the top points scorer in Manchester City’s win over Crystal Palace – but he was not the only midfielder to bring in double-figures.

Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m) put himself right back on the Fantasy Premier League radar with an exceptional performance in time for the end of season run-in.

As we learned yet more about Pep Guardiola’s side at Crystal Palace, this Scout Notes article documents the latest instalment in an ever-changing picture at Manchester City.

Crystal Palace 1-3 Manchester City

Goals: Luka Milivojevic (£6.4m) | Raheem Sterling x2 (£11.5m), Gabriel Jesus (£9.9m)

Assists: James McArthur (£4.8m) | Kevin de Bruyne x2 (£9.7m), Leroy Sané (£9.3m)

Sterling was comfortably Manchester City’s chief goal threat in the 3-1 win at Selhurst Park. No player was afforded more big chances, and he was top of the pile for shots in the box and efforts on target too. That certainly bodes well for future attacking returns, but Sterling will continue to have rotation concerns hanging over him.

Despite playing 90 minutes in each of the last two matches, he was named in the starting line-up against Crystal Palace and completed yet another outing. With Manchester City currently 1-0 down to Tottenham Hotspur after the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, it seems highly unlikely that he will be left out of the starting XI for the second leg on Wednesday. That would mean five starts in a row for the Englishman ahead of Double Gameweek 35 when they host Spurs again. It will be interesting to see when Guardiola decides to hand him a rest.

At the very least, Sterling seems to be posing more of a threat than Sergio Aguero (£11.7m) who now has just one goal in the last four Gameweeks. Manchester City’s diminutive midfielder is also getting clear of the Argentinian for underlying statistics too, offering better minutes per chance, minutes per chance created and expected goal involvement (xGI) too.

Aguero continues to have his minutes managed by Guardiola too, without a 90-minute appearance since Gameweek 24. Obviously, that has helped him start more matches than most of his colleagues, but in games where he has not looked his best, like this one, it is frustrating for his owners that he does not stay on the pitch for longer. There were suggestions after the match that Guardiola had taken him off because of an injury, although the Manchester City manager has since confirmed that Aguero does not have a knock.

Coming back into the Fantasy conversation after an incredible performance is de Bruyne. He was easily the best player on the pitch at Selhurst, providing two incisive assists for Sterling and Gabriel Jesus (£9.9m). Amazingly, they were his first two of the season, but the fact that he has struggled with injury for much of the campaign it’s not a huge surprise.

Crucially, de Bruyne’s attacking returns against Crystal Palace were in line with the creative potential he has shown in recent matches. In the four outings in the build-up to Double Gameweek 34, the Belgian had created a chance every 18 minutes, so assists were certainly coming. With four efforts on goal at Selhurst Park, only Sterling had more shots than him too. With six starts in the last seven Gameweeks, and potentially a rest against Spurs given his absence on Tuesday night, de Bruyne could be a key Manchester City midfielder to own between now and the end of the season.

“The last three or four games the way (de Bruyne) played was incredible, we missed him a lot. He has the ability and vision to see passes that other human beings are not able to watch. With him around, our paces and passes in front – especially in the final third – are incredible and today he was so committed to defensive work, winning duels and being in that position. And of course, he is fresh mentally in the legs in those situations. That’s why he made not just the two assists that are so important but in all the other situations that we needed him.” – Pep Guardiola

Given that he missed the Champions League quarter-final first leg, it was no surprise to see Leroy Sané (£9.3m) in the starting line-up at Palace. He has worked his way back into consideration for Premier League matches it seems, with starts in both of the last two matches, after just three appearances between Gameweeks 25 and 32. Crucially, he has attacking returns in both of those, a goal against Cardiff and an assist at Selhurst Park.

The fact that he was able to produce a decent attacking performance despite sharing the left-flank with Benjamin Mendy (£6.1m) is worthy of note. The Frenchman was making his first league start since November and enjoyed nothing more than a solid afternoon. There was some overlap with Sané, but it was mainly the German who provided the width down that side of the pitch.

Elsewhere on the injury front, Bernardo Silva (£7.6m) was back in the side overcoming his yellow flag. He was named among the substitutes and came on for David Silva (£8.5m) in the second half. Meanwhile, Fernandinho (£5.3m) missed out with what Guardiola described as a “short-term” injury which could also make him absent for midweek Champions League action. However, Manchester City did not particularly miss the Brazilian with both de Bruyne and Ilkay Gündogan (£5.5m) providing a decent screen for the back-four.

“Yes. (Fernandinho) finished bad against Tottenham. Today he is not fit. It’s short-term.” – Pep Guardiola

Crystal Palace certainly made themselves harder to beat than some were expecting pre-match. They were without James Tomkins (£4.3m) and Mamadou Sakho (£4.9m) and had to field Martin Kelly (£3.9m) and Scott Dan (£4.4m) at centre-back.

The injury problems mounted for the Eagles in the first half when Jeffrey Schlupp (£4.5m) was forced off with a muscle problem. He was replaced by Cheikhou Kouyaté (£4.7m).

The interesting line on Crystal Palace’s attack was that Michy Batshuayi (£6.5m) was benched for Christian Benteke (£6.3m) to get his first start since Gameweek 26. Roy Hodgson explained that he wanted a player who could hold the ball up for his side, which the Belgian did admirably against formidable opponents. The Eagles’ manager also cited Batshuayi’s status as a loan player as a reason for dropping him to the bench, so it will be intriguing to see if that has a prolonged effect on his place in the team as the season winds to a close.

Crystal Palace XI (4-5-1): Guaita; van Aanholt, Dann, Kelly, Wan-Bissaka; Zaha, Schlupp (Kouyaté 22′), Milivojevic, McArthur (Sako 85′), Townsend (Meyer 77′); Benteke.

Manchester City XI (4-2-3-1): Ederson; Mendy, Laporte, Kompany, Walker; Gündogan, de Bruyne; Sané (Stones 87′), D Silva (B Silva 65′), Sterling; Aguero (Jesus 75′).

I was planning to but am having second thoughts with a bench of Ryan, Duffy, TAA and Romeu.

I'd do it imo. That's a good bench regardless of Brighton's form.

Yeah mine is it stands is

        Ryan dunk Duffy and jota.

But.. we have a free transfer to remove say Dunk, can consider a hit.. and Brighton could look better v Cardiff. So think I’ll be doing BB still as down the line I’d be downgrading players to fodder to squeeze extra pennies potentially.

The atmosphere at Anfield was electric yesterday. I've been lucky enough to be part of some of the great ones and yesterday was right up there. I think I may have dented my forehead went that Salah thunderbolt ripped the net.

Atmosphere at Anfield has always been the best of the top 6. Empithad, Emirates and Old Trafford can also be extremely poor. Think the new WHL could rival Anfield in years to come though.

I've Ryan, Duffy, TAA and Romeu, and am doubting the wisdom of BBing in a DGW.

        Agreed on Vardy and Lloris.

I still like Vardy. WH defence is a tasty prospect. Gambled this week on Maddison ahead of Fraser and Martial. Wrong call!

Keeping I think for double move for Mo in 36. Suspect lots of rotation means a Sgw player isn’t much of a downer.

        Lloris Duffy Valery Vardy

In theory you should be picking up a minimum of 16 points just on appearance points from BB (obviously might not work out that way) but even that is a very welcome boost in any gw, after that any points, which you surely have a good chance of out of 8 fixtures, are added bonus

    RMT for BB GW35 please:

    Ryan Foster
    Doherty WB TAA Robbo Duffy
    Son Sterling Hazard Deulofeu Hojbjerg
    Jimenez Aguero Rashford

In that, already considering McCarthy for Foster (FT) and Camarasa for Hojbjerg (-4pts), with 0.4 itb. I'm considering Duffy or WB out for a further -4 but to bring in someone dgw such as Cathcart. I know Duffy already is dgw but my confidence in him against Wolves and Spurs has dropped considerably...

I think watford clearly have the best double, and their defensive assets need discussing please.

Foster is a no brainer of course but with many looking to offload Brighton defenders.. who would you say is best at the back? Holebas? Cathcart? Going for a nailed one seems the priority.

    2. QuintonFortune25

Key player - Is Jamie Vardy worth holding for GW35 against whu? He's highly owned and has a good fixture but its just the one, as opposed to other strikers like Lacazette and Deeney who have two.

Key team - Man City. Do we really consider TOT, mun as two difficult fixtures given how good Man City are and that they simply cant afford to drop any points? Are those fixtures actually a positive for owners of Aguero, Sterling, KDB, Laporte etc as Man City surely have to put their best 11 out against both teams? Would you captain a City player?

Talking point - Salah. After yesterday he looks back in the mood to score goals, is he now worth his price? Alternatively, does Mane continue to show us a cheaper and just as reliable option, perhaps with the captaincy / triple captaincy in GW36 against Huddersfield in mind.

    3. Eytexi
      • 5 Years

Player: Jiminez. Has he ever been closer to essential? Is he essential? Is he captaincy material for the DGW?

Team: Watford. Plum DGW fixtures for a double up, but defensive options lack 'nailedness' & plenty of debate regarding attacking selection.

Team: Bournemouth. Is their poor away form behind them and, therefore, could they batter 3 of their final 4 opponents with this new formation? Wilson is getting a lot of transfers in - thoughts on attackers for the DGW?

Talking Point: how different Champions League results will impact rotation. What impact will Spurs/Man City/Liverpool going through have on their PL teamsheets for the rest of the season?

    4. The Rumour Mill
      • 7 Years
      5 years, 3 days ago

Player: Redmond, is he finally blossoming as a footballer?

Team: are wolves done for the season now and therefore a complete trap?

Talking point: any attempt to explain the Fulham, Everton, Brighton, and Bournemouth performances would be great, what the hell happened there? Was it the most unpredictable day in fpl history? Even West ham playing United off the park in their own stadium was weird, it just wasn't reflected in fpl terms. Any stories of similar days might be an entertaining trip down memory lane!

Of all the teams to discuss, I think Man United is the one I'm most baffled by and concerned about.

Talking point: Is anyone discouraged from playing BB in 35 after WCing just to load on DGW 35? Or maybe switch some DGW rubbish to SGWers with great fixtures from Liverpool, Bournemouth etc. I can see Liverpool and Bournemouth assets outscoring the Southampton, Brighton Wolves and Watford players

It's impossible to get Liverpool assets in by selling players from the teams you mentioned unless we have loads of cash in the bank.

I'd still fancy Watford, Wolves & Soton players to outscore Bournemouth till end of the season.

Maybe so for Mane and Salah, but in defense if you can spare 1-2m you can upgrade a Duffy to a TAA or even VVD.

Can we risk going without Mo Salah for Pool's next 4 games (car, HUD, new, WOL)?

He's owned by only 22.82% (according to LiveFPL) of the Top 10k which makes him a good differential for the run in.

Mane still outscored him yet everyone is so worked up about Salah. I think Mane, Robbo, Firmino and VVD will outscore him till end of season. Probably TAA as well if he does start the Cardiff and Huddersfield games.

Talking Point:- Bench Boost. How many doubles and triples and on which teams? Also what is the optimum number?

Player:- Moura v Son v Llorente. If Pochettino, maintains the 2 upfront it's likely that only 2 of these will play and depending on results in Europe it could be Moura and Son leading the line. Were his points a one off or is this run sustainable?

Team:- Manchester City. Great fixtures around the double and I'm choosing to look at the double as 2 bites of the cherry. Aguero's returns against the top 6 so far this season: 7 matches 8 goals (2 hattricks, 3 blanks) 52 points in 521 minutes played.

For those of us with Deeney (or others that are now unavailable for GW35) and double / triple Brighton defence, is it potentially now a better strategy to TC in 35 and BB in 36?

I think the talking point has to be:

Should we be brave enough to admit WC has gone bad and postpone BB if needed? Applies more to those who have Duffy/Dunk/Both, Valery, Deeny which is many many people here.

36 and 37 have great fixtures for the same players you have WCed to get in (and at home) and one good fixture is better than 2 bad ones. This also gives the chance for TC on a DGW player like Sterling, Aguero,Auba, Jimenez.

Awful FPL week, feels like it was a victory for the non wildcarders, having the likes of Fraser, Wilson, no Brighton def, Pogba, Newcastle defender etc left in squad and hauling. Hoping to make up the ground on the bench boost next week.

Anyone reassessing wildcards after an awful week and making some moves?

    1. Tsparkes10

Potentially. Martial and Lukaku were kinda punts on my half so may do them 2 to Mane/Salah, Deeney

Well we still have two big games to define the week.

They seem to be a don’t buy/don’t sell especially with a double. Not much you can do but pray.

Umm.. Some options to choose. Which one would you pick ?

    A) Lacazette + Eriksen + 4.5 DF

    C) Aguero + Moura + 4.8 DF

I'm not sure Moura starts both games and even less likely he will score like last week, kind of feel like a trap in my opinion. I'd go B with maybe Doherty or a Watford defender over Kolasinac.

Think my best use of my transfer is Chilwell to Doherty or Cathcart - what do you reckon?

    Ryan - Leno
    Robertson - TAA - Chilwell* - Dunk - Bednarek
    Sterling - Mane - Son - Brooks - Hojbjerg
    Aguero - Vardy - Jimenez

    Is this ok?
    Ryan / Foster
    Dunk / Duffy / Robbo / Valery / Doherty
    Son / Eriksen / Sterling / Deu / Jota
    Jimenez / Kun / Deeney

2.6 ITB and want Salah in my team. What would you do? Get rid of Sterling? Or wait a week so I don't have to take a hit?

Definetly wouldn't sell Sterling for a hit before a DGW. Salah can wait another week. Brighton triple not ideal, but again i wouldnt sell any DGW assets for a hit unless funds required elsewhere.

You think Sterling gets benched vs. Spurs or United with a title to play for? Would be brave of Pep.

Rotation is usually to rest players for bigger games, not because they're not fit enough to play 2 games in a week. Reckon he starts both, subbed off and then gets his rest in the weeks after.
