Abject Brighton set to boost Wolves and Spurs assets

Brighton ensured that Double Gameweek 34 will live long in the memory as one of the worst in Fantasy Premier League history.

Across their two home games, for which they were heavily backed defensively, they conceded seven goals and did not net a single one of their own.

Owners of their players may already be considering moving them on, especially with the Bench Boost set for extensive use in Double Gameweek 35.

We haven’t got a great deal to say about this match, as Brighton’s performance both on Tuesday and in recent weeks tells us only one thing…

Brighton 0-2 Cardiff

Goals: Nathaniel Mendez-Laing (£4.8m), Sean Morrison (£4.7m)

Assists: Junior Hoilett (£5.0m), Victor Camarasa (£4.5m)

Another dismal performance for Brighton on Tuesday night has all but written off their use to Fantasy managers for the 2018/19 season, as they are pulled perilously closer to the relegation zone. The Seagulls were backed so heavily in Double Gameweek 34 because of their home form, even in spite of dreadful results away from the Amex Stadium. However, they failed to deliver even against favourable opponents. With trips to Wolves and Tottenham coming up in Double Gameweek 35, and Arsenal and Manchester City awaiting them in the final two matches of the season, managers are already considering shipping their Seagulls out, with good reason.

Shane Duffy (£4.8m) was the chief disappointment as he managed just one point across two fixtures. Once again, Brighton were found wanting defensively, this time conceding twice to a side that had not scored away from home in the Premier League since February. In fact, it was the first time all season that Cardiff had enjoyed a lead at half-time. In the end, it proved to be the Bluebirds first away top-flight win by two clear goals since 1956. In both matches of Double Gameweek 34, there have been unexpected new levels of low for Brighton to reach.

In all fairness, there was not much Mat Ryan (£4.4m) could have done about Nathaniel Mendez-Laing‘s (£4.8m) opening goal. Receiving the ball from Junior Hoilett (£5.0m), he curled an effort from distance into the top corner, very much like the Canadian who assisted him did twice already this season. However, Sean Morrison‘s (£4.7m) second-half header, that removed another point from Brighton defenders, could have been easily avoided with better organisation.

That seems to have been their downfall in recent weeks, especially in home matches. In their first season and three-quarters in the Premier League, they lost just once at the Amex to a side outside the top six. Since Gameweek 26, they have been easily overturned by Burnley, Southampton, Bournemouth and now, even Cardiff.

While Brighton’s defence has been exceptionally poor, their attack has been even worse in recent weeks. The Seagulls have not scored in any of their last four matches, and are bottom of the league for every relevant attacking underlying statistic. In that time the Seagulls rank 20th for number of shots in the box, shots on target, accuracy, number of big chances and goal conversion rate. Furthermore, they are the first top-flight side to lose five matches on the bounce without scoring in all competitions since Aston Villa in October 2014.

Despite reverting to the tried and tested 4-4-1-1 formation for the first time in some weeks against Cardiff, Chris Hughton’s side really did offer very little on Tuesday night. Glenn Murray (£6.4m) came in for Florin Andone (£5.0m), while Pascal Groß (£6.7m) made his first start since Gameweek 28 in the number 10 role. Neither player managed a shot on target.

The only player who offered much was the returning Solly March (£4.7m), deployed on the right wing in his first start since Gameweek 28. No Brighton player shot more often in the box than him, while he was top for chances created too.

Crucially, the fact that the Seagulls are so blunt in their attacks right now bodes well for those backing Wolves and Spurs defensive assets in Double Gameweek 35.

Meanwhile, Cardiff players proved us many wrong by securing two places in the Double Gameweek 34 Dream Team. Morrison’s clean sheet and goal earned him a total of 16 points across his two matches, while Victor Camarasa (£4.5m) managed seven points after assisting the centre-back’s headed strike.

Whether either can seriously command Fantasy appeal between now and the end of the season remains to be seen though. Camarasa will naturally receive more attention given his price and how well he fits into midfield structures, while Morrison’s goal was just his first of the season. It’s a home match with Liverpool up next, with Crystal Palace and Manchester United still to come. Maybe their next best opportunity for points will be the Gameweek 36 trip to Fulham.

The desire to stay in the Premier League was evident in Cardiff’s play on Tuesday night and it was clear that they were considerably more focussed in their hopes to stay up than Brighton were. That could be the deciding factor in the Bluebirds’ upcoming performances as we reach that stage of the season where aims and objectives, or lack of them, for teams start to play a part in our Fantasy decisions.

There were a number of injury considerations for Neil Warnock to clear up after the game. Harry Arter (£4.9m) missed out on the game entirely after, strangely, picking up a problem when coming off the pitch against Burnley. Meanwhile, Aron Gunnarsson (£4.4m) had to come off in the second half at Brighton with a back spasm.

“He just nicked his calf, believe it or not, running off when he was substituted. There are some silly injuries out there. I couldn’t risk him tonight.” – Neil Warnock

“Yeah we didn’t want to risk him any more. He’s got a spasm in his back. He’ll be alright. He just needs it. I was glad when he came off. Bacuna was like Pogba when he came on.” – Neil Warnock

Brighton and Hove Albion XI (4-4-1-1): Ryan; Bernardo, Dunk, Duffy, Bruno; March, Pröpper, Stephens, Jahanbakhsh (Izquierdo 69′); Groß (Andone 54′); Murray.

Cardiff City XI (4-2-3-1): Etheridge; Bennett, Ecuele Manga, Morrison, Peltier; Ralls, Gunnarsson (Bacuna 55′); Hoilett, Camarasa, Mendez-Laing (Harris 80′); Niasse (Zohoré 84′).

Is Koscielny likely to play the Palace AND Wolves game?
I'm guessing the Napoli game makes things complicated.....

Current defence is: Robertson, Doherty, Valery, Duffy , Dunk (so absolutely terribly set up for the rest of the season).

    I also have Deeney. 🙁

I planned to bench boost this week and I have £0.1m in the bank.

    A) Deeney -> Gray (leaves me a bench boost of Lloris, Duffy, Dunk, Valery)
    B) Deeney and Duffy -> Long & a £6m defender (-4). Defenders normally do well in DGW and would better set me up for renaming weeks.

    If B, which defender?

Identical situation to me. I’m taking a -8 most likely. Looking at Yoshida and TAA in at the back, maybe VVD if I go for a cheaper striker like Long.

Only way to go to Wilson and have triple Liverpool next week is to take a -12.

I specifically want Salah next week too is another issue (have mane and Robbo already) so that’s more hits 🙁

Can’t believe how bad our wildcard teams look 1 week on!!

I’m going to have to reflect on this season as both wildcards have definitely lost me a lot of points and left me worse off

Our teams are very similar I guess:

          Lloris, Foster
          Robbo, Doherty, Dunk, Duffy, Valery
          Eriksen, Son, Mane, KDB, Jota
          Aguero, Jimi, Deeney

No - I played Robbo and Deeney, benched Doherty (as clean sheet odds were better for Liverpool than wolves). Scored 52 this week

It depends if you want an extra Pool defender or attacker. If B, TAA looks good and you can even stretch to Llorente (if that appeals).

I'd be surprised if Brighton get much out of the double, but that fixture in 36 (NEW) could bring returns for Ryan, Duffy etc.

I’ve thought about it but need to look at it more - means keeping value tied up in bench until then

Also whilst DGW have been bad this year I’m still of the belief 8 games on bench boost is better then 4

Seems to be quite a few suggesting keeping Vardy one last week. I have to say, it's a game Liverpool should (and need to) win, but Cardiff are probably bouncing off the back of last night.

West Ham away is a good fixture, even Huddersfield scored 3 there recently!

That was kind of my point with the question... given lack of viable DGW options, does it make any sense to take Vardy out of the team... I can see the sense in a player like Firminio, albeit I'm not sure he'll outscore Vardy.

I've got Jimi and Rash so increasingly leaning towards a hold!

Who plays triple captain chip this GW? whom you gonna captain?

I used my BB boost on GW32 and got 20 points. It was satisfying on my side. Now the only chip that I didn't used yet is TC.

I am going with Aguero if he won't get injured tonight. As City is chassing, I don't think Pep has a luxery to bench him for either game. I expect he will play at least 135-140 minutes in total and I will be happy to give the armband as there is not another standing option.

So who will you give the armband?

Was at the Chels game and Salah was a man on a mission in the second half. Even in his interview post game, you can see he has fire in his belly. I'm worried as a non owner this week but definitely TC'ing him against Huddersfield.

I feel the same, but no idea how I'm getting him in. Have you a plan for it?

I was hoping he'd keep quiet-ish and I could do Eriksen-Deeney to fodder-Firmino in gw36, and TC Mane.

To get Salah I need to ditch two premium mids out of Mane,Erik,Son,KDB which is unappealing given their respective fixtures.

Badly need help here folks. 20 red arrows in 25 gameweeks has seen me fall from 66th in GW9 to 52k at present.

    On BB this GW.

    Foster Lloris
    Robbo Laporte Doherty Duffy Valery
    Mané Eriksen Son Deulofeu JWP
    Aguero Vardy Jimenez

A lot will depend on the result of tonight's game but if City go out Sterling may be a buy.

Any feedback would be more than welcome.

We have near identical teams (and posting times) it would seem. Agree with what you say about Sterling hinging on tonight, but even then, I'm not convinced by the fixtures.

Are you bringing in Salah or Firmino for GW36? Can't make my mind up at the moment.

I've already thrown Ryan out for Foster. May just end up keeping Duffy in the unlikely event he does something - have all the money in the world ITB but none of the other defenders stand out to warrant a -4.

Leaves me with a bench boost of

    Lloris - Foster
    Robertson - Doherty - Bednarek - Laporte - Duffy
    Son - Eriksen - Mane - Jota - JWP
    Aguero - Jimenez - Vardy

Have you made a decision on your Deeney replacement ? I'm looking at Gray, Wilson or maybe Ings I think despite his injury issues. Troy was a problem I could have done without with Camarasa and double Brighton defence on board too.

Wilson feels like the sensible option although Gray could be a great pick given the fixtures. Currently toying with the idea of Deeney & Camarasa for Hughes & Wilson -4.

I guess I don't really see it as an advice shop, they just discuss fantasy and what they will be doing and what they think of common questions in the community. If people want someone to run their team for them I don't know why they're playing.

Seeking advice & giving the team keys to other to run are two different things !!

I'm only saying that having so many followers with YouTube channel & FFS community, you're bound to influence people.

I think people who are saying that Scoutcast influenced them to © Duffy, i disagree with them completely, to make it clear !!!

I agree. Advice should be just that, though. You can't follow it exactly without any consideration of your own.

It isn't like they couldn't back up why it was a good idea, and the stats are given so you can dig around if you want to, too.

I just wonder how many would be thanking the scoutcast as vehemently as they criticised it if there was a clean sheet or two.

For example I think it was said that only Murray had taken more goal attempts than Duffy over the last 5-6 games. Problem would have been that this was probably a very low number of total attempts based on Brighton attacking play. But taken without factoring that in makes Duffy sound a good pick.

I would be. Play on the break with Son and Moura and nick a goal meaning City would need three.

I would be, I think if Spurs can score they'll go through.

    Which bench scores more?

    A) Ryan (wol/tot), Duffy, Dunk, Wilson (FUL)
    B) Ryan (NEW), Duffy, Gomez/Matip (HUD), Wilson (sou)
    C) Ryan (ars), Schlupp (car), Gomez (new), Wilson (TOT)

Just looking at some hypotheticals. Which route to Salah next week?
    A) Eriksen and Aguero to Rashford and Salah
    B) Jota and Aguero to 4.6 fodder (e.g. Long) and Salah

B means keeping Eriksen long term, with the likelihood of no United attack 37-38.

Got Duffy, Dunk and Murray. Ederson and Foster in goal. Would you
    a) Cancel BB this week.
    b) take -4 to get rid of 2 Brighton players.
    c) take -8 to get rid of all 3 Brighton players.

I'd hold Vardy, should do well this week.

Who's the planned sacrifice for those getting Salah in next week?
Looks like it has to be Kun for me and I'm not happy about it 🙁 but needs must.

It's tough - hoping for a couple of injuries/suspensions to make the decision easier!

If you have triple pool already, roll with it.

          Yep
Might even © Raz if he looks like playing against Burnley in 36.
So, thinking about keeping all Options open by Saving FT this gw.

          Cheers mate 🙂

Think I've settled on a plan (OPTION A)- can I have your thoughts?
35: Duffy and Deeney to Laporte and Long (BB). Limited expectations on the latter, but I think he'll get 60 and 30 over the two. The former is a solid pick for the rest of the season.
36: Kun and Jota to Salah (TC) and non-playing fodder (Success maybe). Gives me triple pool (with Mane and Robbo).

It feels probably the sensible route, even though I'll be playing 4-5-1 for 36-38. The other obvious route is to keep Kun througout, get TAA and TC Mane in 36 (OPTION B).

Is this for -8 overall? That would be my concern. Sensible moves overall though, especially Kun out if Man Cuty progress tonight
