Redmond starts but Valery missing for Southampton

Nathan Redmond (£5.4m) has been handed another start in the central attacking midfield role in which he thrived in Double Gameweek 34.

Having played as a makeshift centre-forward for long spells this season, the former Norwich man was paired with Josh Sims (£4.4m) last time out and got a brace.

Ralph Hasenhüttl has gone with the same system in attack, handing another start to striker Danny Ings (£5.4m) too.

However, there was disappointment for those Fantasy managers who had invested in Southampton defender Yan Valery (£4.1m) with this Double Gameweek in mind.

After coming off with cramp in Double Gameweek 34 and overcoming that this week, he ends up missing the game through illness.

Jannik Vestergaard (£4.6m) is also absent making for a back-three of Maya Yoshida (£4.1m), Jan Bednarek (£4.0m) and Jack Stephens (£4.2m).

In central midfield there are starts for budget midfielders Oriol Romeu (£4.2m) and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg (£4.4m), who will be in a handful of Bench Boost squads.

Meanwhile, Newcastle’s relevance to the Fantasy Premier League scene continues to dwindle.

Salomón Rondón (£5.9m) remains the most popular Magpie in the game but his ownership has fallen again, now to just 6.5% overall.

Newcastle XI: Dubravka; Schar, Lascelles, Dummett; Manquillo, Ki, Hayden, Ritchie; Almiron, Perez; Rondon

Southampton XI: Gunn; Bednarek, Yoshida, Stephens; Ward-Prowse, Oriol Romeu, Højbjerg, Bertrand; Sims, Redmond; Ings.

FPL Chips. I’ve spent some time analysing my ML rivals and how they’ve played them this season. Those peeps who BB early, particularly in GW1, far outscored anyone else (I accept this week isn’t over yet). Those players playing their second WC in January have by far outscored those of us playing it for the DGW’s. Those who used their TC early (Aguero in particular) have also fared better than those of us saving it till late.

Is this season just an outlier? Previous seasons rewarded planning and patience but this season has been quite different. Rotation seems worse this year and perhaps is playing a part in this change? Or perhaps it’s just becoming harder to predict points?

I think it might be time for a rethink from the conventional usage of chips. Look how Mark bucked the trend by playing all
season with three budget strikers, bucking the usual practice and it proved an excellent strategy for him. I’m seriously considering using my BB in GW1 next season as a starter for ten. I’ll definitely play both WC’s earlier to maximise team value and jump on bandwagons more quickly next season. The game feels like it has fundamentally changed and it will change again next season with the introduction of VAR. The best players stay ahead of the curve right?

I'm going to check his team from the start because that is a late WC. Late WC doesn't mean that is the best timing, but could just indicate he had the right players from the start of.

True but look more closely at the top 10. Only four of them played the conventional strategy. One guy WC in GW7. Most TC in GW25. Several played their second WC in January / February.

TC in GW25 is the reason most are in the top 10.
Most WC'ed in GW34, not the early January WC.
          9 are BB this week.

Agreed and I’m certainly not binning off the traditional strategy. My point is that there is an alternative view and that this season feels like those players who chose to ignore the standard approach and do things differently have done very well.

I agree the advantage playing the bench boost gameweek 1 is that the main players are likely to start.
However the disadvantage to that is that in game-week there are always some odd results.
As regards playing the game differently - this site - forum etc basically tells you the way the hive is thinking.
It is up to you how you move away from the hive group think consensus when you think they are wrong.

Example: gw34 I went for sigurdsson instead of sterling/kdb.
I thought sterling would be rested and sigurdsson had a better chance of score v fulham
It did not work for me.

But this gw35 I stuck with vardy and the double city defence paid off. Most do not have double city defence and went for attack instead.
I also got rid of duffy for a hit and got Boly.
But hopefully having both salah and mane will pay off and leave me in good shape for the gameweek.

Agreed that it’s important to hold firm to your own views. Group think can be both helpful and dangerous. It’s about filtering out the rubbish!

Easier said than done though as you have to chose the correct time to stick to your own views or decide to change your plan.
That is what the consistent managers are good at unlike me who is all over the place most of the time.

I will adopt the same strategy again next season. Just been unlucky this season with the double gameweeks and trolling players/teams. The plan for blank weeks, WC then BB was a sound strategy in theory. It just hasn't produced as many points as we would have hoped due to a number of factors. I would make the same decisions again though.

I think that’s a situation where you react to what you see in pre season and the first few games. I think it will take time for refs, players etc to get used to VAR.

BB in week 1 is not ideal because you don't know yet who the best bargains are. You have the standard team value of 100m and no chance of having more big hitters than the average.

they were right to last week. the mistake was taking hits to get rid of them for terrible watford players.

Was good call to get them in. The captain shouts was what I think was being slagged off.

      🙂
      Sold Duffy for Yoshida.
      Got KDB for Eriksen.
At least have Deulofeu to soften the blow

Not here, benched the horrible duo so my hate for them has been magnified if anything.

Saints 2-0 down. Valery must surely be a starter for the next game.

Anyone better? Didn`t BB cus of Gracias comments about Deulofeu so he seemed unlikely to start in my mind, and didn`t see much from my 3x Brighton defence. Also i have Jota who easily coulda scored twice or thrice in that game. Also got KDB off injured and only an assist from my TC Aguero, who admittedly didn`t have much. Coulda scored on that one big chance and certainly City should have had a pen. I hate this game.

Gracia said ahead of last gw that Deulofeu had trained all week, and he didn`t even make the squad. This time he said "he trained yesterday so we`ll see". To me that sounded like bs and i didn`t expect him to play against Huddersfield - which was the one game i wanted him for in the first place.

I didn't expect him to play today either. That was a very tough choice vs Jota, may well have made the same one in same situation.

Idk if you`ve seen highlights, but Jota easily could have had 2-4 goals today. Which wouldn`t just mean his points in the bag, but also all the bench boosting Brighton boys lose their cs points, obviously.

Didn't BB cos of Deeney. Duffy & Dunk on bench. Vardy out for Kun (could still work out). Bednarek, Valery & Foster all in team.

Rival BB'd with Deulo, Duffy & Ryan to overtake me by about 30pts in main cash league. Can't wait for this season to end.

Same. I`ve dropped from top 1k around gw 15 to about 28k where i am now. Feel like i`ve made the wrong turn at every crossroads and mixed in with a bit of bad luck (which is ofcourse subjective, but still). Ironically i`m still poised to profit in my cashleagues, mostly due to highest score in a non dgw. Final season for me, not enjoying it one bit.

I benched Deu but took the risk on benchboost, him along with Ryan and Duffy has me on 31pts so far from benchboost so I'm so glad I did now!

35 points and counting on my bench. How many cs does Brighton have away from home prior to today? Jota is a differential in my leagues, yet he misses 2 sitters and twice off the woodwork.

          GW 32 - Deuloufeu
          GW 35 - Doucure

          Well done me.
