Deulofeu has point to prove at home after more away success

Many of our questions about Watford were answered in their 2-1 win at Huddersfield on Saturday.

Fantasy managers learned what their attack should look like in the absence of a suspended Troy Deeney (£5.9m) as well as what their defence is capable of.

How they are shaping up for their second match of Double Gameweek 35 and the rest of the season is the focus of this latest Scout Notes article.

Huddersfield 1-2 Watford

Goals: Karlan Grant (£5.0m) | Gerard Deulofeu x2 (£5.6m)

Assists: Chris Löwe (£4.4m) | Abdoulaye Doucouré (£6.0m)

Gerard Deulofeu (£5.6m) is potentially half-way to producing a memorable Double Gameweek haul for his 5.2% ownership. He overcame his yellow flag to start up front for Watford and was comfortably the most threatening player on the pitch. In fact, so far in Double Gameweek 35, no player has recorded more shots on target, and only three have more shots in the box.

Those impressive statistics yielded a 16-point haul against Huddersfield, as Deulofeu scored twice. The first goal of his brace was somewhat familiar to those who witnessed his opening strike in this month’s FA Cup semi-final victory over Wolves. Receiving the ball from a Terence Kongolo (£4.3m) tackle, the former Everton man cleverly guided into the net with virtually no backlift.

“He’s lovely at that – once he’s got you stood still you’re in trouble! It’s got minimum backlift. He’s got real control and knows exactly where he’s putting it – he does that in training all the time.” – Ben Foster

“Today was not quite the same, the semi-final goal was more beautiful but today was really good also.” – Gerard Deulofeu

Deulofeu brought back memories of his FA Cup semi-final goal with his opener at Huddersfield

Deulofeu continues to be deployed as a centre-forward for Watford, which the player himself has cited as the reason why he has now tripled his best-ever goals tally in a Premier League season. He scored just three times for Everton back in the 2013/14 campaign but has nine goals to his name with four matches left of 2018/19.

“The difference is I’m playing as a striker. This is my first season playing up front and it’s 11 goals but it could be more because in the first period of the season I missed a lot of chances, so it could be 15 or more. I’m happy playing nearer to the goal and that’s the reason why I’m scoring more goals.” – Gerard Deulofeu

Whether Deulofeu can add to his Double Gameweek 35 score in a significant fashion does depend on his home form. It is Southampton who come to Vicarage Road on Tuesday, night fresh from losing 3-1 to Newcastle at St James’ Park, which of course bodes well. However, Deulofeu is without a league goal at home since Gameweek 17, when Cardiff were seen off 3-2. He may have six goals in his last five Premier League away matches, but Deulofeu has scored only three times at Vicarage Road all season. Furthermore, he may still have doubters to prove wrong against Southampton, considering that 60 of his 122 FPL points this season have come in four matches against Huddersfield and Cardiff. Staggeringly, that’s just under half.

The fact that the last three matches of the season hand Watford two home games against Wolves and West Ham, and a trip to Chelsea, it is possible that Deulofeu might struggle to match his recent hauls away at Huddersfield and Cardiff.

“With players like Geri, you are going to have times where you might get a little bit frustrated, but he’s somebody that is so invaluable to the team. You want him in your team because he can always win you games. He’s always looking to go forward with the ball, and sometimes he drags the whole team with him. It’s nice to watch.” – Ben Foster

Elsewhere in the Watford attack, as predicted, Andre Gray (£6.0m) got himself a start in the absence of Deeney. It was his second in a row, which could set him up well to play against Southampton, although he was not especially threatening at the John Smith’s Stadium. From just one effort on goal against one of the worst defences in the league this year, Gray did not manage a single shot on target. He was replaced by Isaac Success (£4.5m) in the 72nd minute, who would be the most likely to take his starting berth on Tuesday night. Whether or not there will be any rotation for that match remains to be seen.

“To be honest, I am focused on playing in three days and we have to recover these players and prepare as best as possible. It is the only way.” – Javi Gracia

Thankfully, Abdoulaye Doucouré (£6.0m) handed a reward to those who invested in his reliability of starts. The central midfielder did not play a particularly advanced role but was still influential on the game. Deulofeu was the only Watford player to manage more shots in the box than Doucouré against Huddersfield, while none of his colleagues achieved as many successful passes in the attacking third either. That yielded an assist for Deulofeu’s second goal of the afternoon; a third attacking return in four matches.

Watford still could not keep a clean sheet, even facing goal-shy Huddersfield

Despite the joy for owners of a handful of midfield options, there was a bitter disappointment for those who had invested in Watford’s defence. Limiting Huddersfield to just three shots on target, currently the third-worst total in Double Gameweek 35, the Terriers were still able to find the net in the closing stages of stoppage time. It was Karlan Grant (£5.0m) who stole in to deny Watford a first clean sheet since February, and any defensive points for owners of Ben Foster (£4.6m) and his colleagues at the back. It now seems even more unlikely that there will be any more defensive returns for Watford players between now and the end of the season with Wolves, Chelsea and West Ham to come after the Southampton game.

“I was very, very [angry]. I couldn’t believe it. Huddersfield played a good game and showed their pride. I want to be respectful of them and the situation they are living, but we have to improve in that moment and be more demanding. It’s my job to remind them of what they have to do.” – Javi Gracia

The main thing learned from a Huddersfield perspective was what they are likely to provide Liverpool with on Friday. Their trip to Anfield has been long-targeted as an opportunity to deploy the Triple Captain chip, and it should stay that way ahead of Gameweek 36.

Huddersfield Town XI (4-4-1-1): Lössl; Durm, Kongolo, Schindler, T Smith; Mbenza (Löwe 81′), Hogg (Daly 41′), Bacuna, Kachunga; Mooy; Mounié (Grant 65′).

Watford XI (4-4-2): Foster; Masina, Cathcart, Mariappa, Kiko Femenía; Sema, Capoue, Doucouré, Hughes (Navarro 90+2′); A Gray (Success 72′), Deulofeu (Chalobah 83′).

To be honest the flag isn't what put me off but the rotation and partly the fact that last minute I decided I wanted double Liverpool defence (Robbo along with TAA) which meant that I had to go with JWP to keep funds for Mane.

However, had I known Deeney was going to be sent off and miss the DGW I would 100% have gone for Deulofeu. Contemplated taking a hit to get him in for JWP .

Going for Deeney over Deulofeu has been so costly in my ML. One of those decisions that boiled down to rotten luck.

The last chip - how will you spend yours?

For me (and I imagine many others) it's the Triple-Captain chip.

There are a few juicy options over the remaining 3 gameweeks. Link to a handy captaincy focussed fixture matrix below.

    https://twitter.com/legomane_fpl/status/1119839597763149824?s=21

Liverpool's home tie versus Huddersfield this week is probably the stand out remaining fixture. However a midweek trip to the Nou Camp could spell rotation or minutes managed.

Spurs home tie versus West Ham is also tempting. Sonny in particular looks interesting, given that his ECL first leg suspension means he'll likely feature heavily in the Spurs XI during the lead up.

GW37 is sandwiched between ECL and Europa Semi-Final legs. Whist Arsenal have a prime fixture versus Brighton, it's City versus Leicester that attracts me most here. With KDB potentially out of the picture, Sterling and Aguero look the prime candidates. Jiménez could be an outside shout with a promising fixture versus Fulham.

GW38 has in recent seasons provided goal-fest aplenty, and with Mini-Leagues going to the wire, there seems an abundance of strong captaincy options this week for chasing challengers looking for premium differential options. City face Brighton away, whose relegation battle could be settled by this point. Liverpool face Wolves, tough on paper but Wolves defence has so often flattered to deceive this season. Spurs put 6 past Everton in the reverse fixture, but the toffees late resurgence may be off-putting in terms of captaincy candidates. Or how about one final fling on Eden Hazard versus Leicester before his much rumoured departure to Madrid in the summer...

Any points of interest to add would be welcome - what are your thoughts?

Those holding BB or FH chips, how do you plan to deploy them over the last 3 GW's?

BB36 was heavily discussed as an alternative for Deeney owners last week, interested to know if many have switched tact.

FH38 was also discussed earlier in the season - Deulofail presented this suggestion in a HT/article if I remember correctly. Anyone planning this? If so, how has the navigation of GW31-GW35 blanks and doubles panned out for you - very interested to hear!

5 days between HUD and Barca.

Think it’ll be more of a game to give players such as Gomez minutes than to rest the key players as such.

I’d be much more worried if it was Saturday early evening followed by a Tuesday CL.

I saved BB this GW. Bench was Lloris Deeney Dunk Duffy & have Valery in my starting XI, so still a coin toss at this point whether it was the right decision or not.

I will use BB this GW - both keepers at home, my fodder Brighton/Soton players have reasonable home fixtures, and will take a hit to turn Deeney into Firmino.

Plan atm is TC one of Sterling/Kun/Haz in 37, but warming to the idea of unleashing it in 38 on some randomer & hoping for a final day goalfest.

Bringing in either Mane or Salah this week and will TC Vs Huddersfield. It's either going to be a frustrating 1 or 2 nil win or an absolute massacre. I'm hoping for the latter as it's a chance for Pool to lay down a marker and put the pressure back on City. Not overly worried about rotation with the Barca game 5 days away.

I WCed in 34, currently on BB and have TC & FH left to play.
WC doesn't seem to be working as I'd like, while BB is almost wasted with lots of misfortunes.
I feel like playing FH in 38, just to have more fun, like an all star XI, just before the season ends.
TC therefore will be in 36 or 37.
36 could be Mane or Son TC, 37 could even be Hazard.

Its either this week (Mane) or GW38 (Sterling) for me.
Dont fancy the fixtures in GW37 plus there could be rotation because of EL/CL.
Leaning towards this week as alot of people have already blown their TC in the Top 10k and you cant get a better fixture than Huds at home.

I had a bench boost of Deeney, Dunk, Duffy, and Lloris this week, Decided to switch to TC KDB. When Lloris was dropped I was thrilled id made the right decision, but then the unthinkable happened and Brighton didn't concede. And of course KDB TC left me speechless.

Prob do BB this week but it will be on the back of a -4 to get rid of deeney and kdb. Red arrow to say the least.

Bottomed previous article again lol, so 3rd time lucky. Interested to hear some thoughts please:

Got bottomed on the last page....

With no Mane or Salah, would you captain a Liverpool defender? According to fplreview, Robertson is the 3rd best captain option behind Mane and Salah this week with an expected score of 6.29 - and both Van Djik and Trent are just above 6 and similar to Aguero/Sterling (when given 80 minutes exp)

TAA and Robbo PPG is 5.8 which is only bettered by Sterling, Hazard and Aguero. But attackers generally score well no matter the game whereas defenders perform much better in the easy fixtures and you don't come much better than Huddersfield at Home.

I think a case can even be made for TC them if you are chasing and really want a differential.

Captain Robbo or Trent is a great option this week. As close to a guaranteed clean sheet as they come and always the potential for attacking returns or bonus. Mane or Salah have higher ceilings as they could brace or even hat trick but judging by recent Pool performances they will keep it tight and win by the odd goal.

      1. F_Ivanovic
        • 8 Years
        4 years, 12 months ago

Yep. Funny how close to guaranteed is still only 60% though and Huddersfield nicked a last minute consolation the other day.

I wouldn't say the ceiling is low - the ceiling can be just as high as evidenced by TAA 18 pointer, VVD 20 pointer vs Watford. Just that their ceiling happens less often.

Although Salah's ceiling hasn't been hit too much this season. "Only" the 3 15+ pointers.

Yes clearly it's not completely guaranteed but It is the Best defence in the league at home to the worst attack in the league so as good a bet for a clean sheet as any!

Agreed that Pool defenders can have high ceilings but as you say these are rare. Also rare is Salah getting more than 8 points so they probably have similar chances to do well now I think about it. Salah the safer and obvious pick though 🙂

Early thoughts for next GW. Which looks best?

    1. Vardy-> Firmino.
    2. KDB->Salah + Vardy-> Wilson/Zaha (7.1m) -4.
    3. KDB-> Sterling + Vardy-> Rashford/ Wilson/ Zaha (8.7m) -4.
    4. KDB-> Bilva + Vardy-> Firmino (12.7m) -4.

Have TC. Liv may be a serious option.
    Lloris.
    TAA, Duffy, Kola.
    KDB, Mane, Jota, Son.
    Jimenez, Aguero, Vardy.
    Foster, JWP, Dunk, Bednarek.
    1ft, 1.6m.

I did Vardy Firmino early and it cost me.
I wanted Pool and a backup over Jimi and Laca.
I have always got away with early tfrs (1 week in this case) actually profiting from it. Not this year!
I like 4 normally but KDB being out, Bilva will move from attacking right to a deeper role.
Sh#t. I never answered your question.

    Afternoon,

Just wanted to know if prices can rise while the game week is running?

In essence can Salah price go up before the Wednesdays game?

I have just enough to get him in now but I am not a fan of doing transfers so early but not sure of price rises

Change each day at 2:15am BST.

There is very little chance of Salah rising before Wednesday. Maybe he’ll rise before Fridays deadline.

Salah is currently sat at -88%.

So he needs 188% before he’ll rise. But his overall ownership is quite high (34%) which means he needs a lot of gems gets to rise.

Think im putting it on Mane this week.
Will be a differential against those who dont have TC and those who will cap/TC Salah.

Cant get Salah without taking a hit this week. WIll have to sell 2 out of Aguero, Sterling, Eriksen or Son.

Im in same boat. Also have Mane.

            Cons of Salah:
            -cost -4
-sell two of Eriksen/Sterling & Kun

            Pros:
            -ML leader can't get Salah(He has Mane+TAA+BF)
            -best fixt (HUD)

        Salah compared to Mane.
Say Salah predicted points 10. Mane a 5 at worst. (EXTREMELY CONSERVATIVE)
        Captain Salah = 20 Captain Mane = 10
TC Salah 30 (Not many would captain Mane. I had Kun and got 10 so fair assumption.
Not a great chip IMO and a lot of luck involved. Worst thing is Salah on for a cameo before CL.
Choose a GW38 player playing at home rather, who will play and goals come in the last GW

TC is a worthy mindchanger though. Salah rested for Huddersfield!

        Salah rested??

Klopp will not rest big guns. Maybe reduced mins but no rest.

It also depends on Wednesday. If United manage to get something klopp will put strong team

Probably wont rather than will not is more appropriate I think,
For me getting rested is playing the last 30 or getting the first 60 too

I wouldn't go anywhere near Utd right now, let alone Lukaku. I'd almost definitely go for A.

Probably not with Lovren recovered from his “illness” and Gomez looking for a run
