Injury updates on Kante and Hudson-Odoi after Burnley frustrate Chelsea

A fiery match at Stamford Bridge on Monday evening saw four goals shared between Chelsea and Burnley.

We look at the key Fantasy talking points from the tenth fixture of Double Gameweek 35 and bring you the latest updates on fresh injuries to two budget Chelsea midfielders.

Chelsea 2-2 Burnley

  • Goals: N’Golo Kante (£5.0m), Gonzalo Higuain (£9.1m) | Jeff Hendrick (£5.2m), Ashley Barnes (£5.6m)
  • Assists: Eden Hazard (£10.9m), Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.4m) | Chris Wood (£6.3m)

Callum Hudson-Odoi‘s (£4.2m) season is over after the budget FPL midfielder limped from the field at Stamford Bridge on Monday evening with what was later diagnosed as a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Speaking after the game, Chelsea assistant manager Gianfranco Zola gave this update on the young England winger:

I think it’s a serious injury, on his Achilles tendon. I cannot tell you the full extent of his injury. I think he will have to have an examination but it’s not looking good.

Not long afterwards, the player himself confirmed on social media that he will play no further part in 2018/19:

There was more positive news on N’Golo Kante (£5.0m) from Zola, however.

The French midfielder had been withdrawn at the interval with a rib problem but Zola said after full-time:

N’Golo was taken down and he fell on the foot of a player, so he just had a contusion in his ribs. He couldn’t breathe properly, that’s why he came off. He will be alright.

Kante had been on the scoresheet in a frenetic first half, scoring the second of four goals that flew in over the course of 12 minutes.

In doing so, Kante became the season’s highest-scoring budget FPL midfielder priced at £5.0m or below.

Eden Hazard (£10.9m) teed the former Leicester City midfielder up for that strike and, while not quite reaching the heights of his performance against West Ham United in Gameweek 33, still showed flashes of brilliance throughout this encounter.

Having been deployed as a “false nine” at Anfield in Gameweek 34, Hazard was back on the left flank against the Clarets and looked dangerous in the early exchanges.

The Belgian stung the palms of Tom Heaton (£4.8m) in the first minute before setting Gonzalo Higuain (£9.1m) up for an excellent chance with a beautifully weighted chipped through ball, going on to register twice as many key passes as anyone on show.

Hazard has also had more penalty box touches and touches in the final third than any other Premier League player in Gameweek 35 so far.

Higuain also started positively, producing a superb near-post finish from a narrow angle to briefly put Chelsea ahead at 2-1 and going close to doubling his tally with a rasping strike from distance.

The impressive Ben Mee (£4.6m) had to be alert to hook Higuain’s goalbound effort off the line following that aforementioned Hazard pass.

Both Hazard and Higuain’s influence waned in the second half, however, with Burnley producing a backs-to-the-wall display following their ambitious approach before the interval.

Mee was the pick of the Clarets’ backline, producing more clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBIs) than any other defender in Gameweek 35 to date.

Dyche said of his centre-half:

I thought he was excellent. The one where he clears it off the line in the first half, that’s because he does that in training. He doesn’t give anything up.

He is another marker of the mentality of the side and it takes a strong mentality to come to places like this because these are top-class groups of players.

Even Matthew Lowton (£4.6m) stood up to the task of man-marking Hazard as the game wore on, winning four of his five tackles.

Jeff Hendrick (£5.2m), who opened the scoring with a superb volley from the edge of the box following a half-cleared corner, also drew praise from his manager after full-time.

Dyche said:

It was a great finish. Jeff has worked so hard. People have questioned him at times but they do forget that we use him all over the place. We use him right side, in the middle, he has played a number 10. He is so honest, he does a great job for us. It was nice to see him pop up with a good goal and one that he will certainly remember. He has not got too many but I think there is goals in him actually and it was a good strike that’s for sure.

Eden Hazard, what a player. So we felt Jeff was right to play there because he doubles up and he has more of a defensive instinct and he has been doing well.

And the amount of times he [Hendrick] doubled up to help Lowts out and I thought Lowts had a top game because it was very difficult. Eden Hazard is a top, top, top player.

While Burnley’s ambition mostly evaporated after the interval (Sean Dyche’s side registered just one shot in the second half), they deserve credit for going toe-to-toe with Chelsea before the break.

Ashley Barnes (£5.6m) scored Burnley’s second goal from a set play after latching onto Chris Wood‘s (£6.3m) header, with the New Zealand international now having registered more attacking returns than any other FPL forward (six – three goals, three assists) in the last four Gameweeks.

Wood had a great chance to add to that haul after the break but couldn’t sort his feet out when clean through on goal.

Dyche once again resisted the urge to drop one of his front two, saying:

We didn’t want to mess around with the side too much. We wanted to come here with two strikers which we have done since Christmas everywhere we have gone and we have got some rewards from that. It is a big risk with the players of this quality in their midfield so I am really pleased.

Whether Dyche persists with that mindset when Manchester City visit Turf Moor on Saturday remains to be seen but we will surely see Hendrick doubling up on whoever plays on City’s left flank – possibly Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) – in Lancashire.

This was a rare off day for Chelsea’s defence in front of their own fans, with the injured Antonio Rudiger (£5.9m) arguably missed at centre-half and, dare we say it, perhaps even the absence of Marcos Alonso‘s (£6.3m) presence when defending set plays also keenly felt.

The Blues had kept four shut-outs in their previous five home matches in the league and this was the first occasion since Gameweek 9 that they had conceded more than one goal in a Premier League fixture at Stamford Bridge.

While a 15th clean sheet of the season eluded Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.4m), the Chelsea right-back was once again noticeably prominent at the other end of the pitch.

Azpilicueta teed up Higuain for Chelsea’s second goal and the Spain international had more touches in the final third than all players on show bar Hazard.

No FPL defender has had more penalty box touches in Gameweek 35 so far.

Both of Azpilicueta’s shots came from inside the Burnley area, with Heaton called into action on each occasion.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.2m) was handed his fourth straight league start in central midfield and was one of Chelsea’s better performers, registering an eye-catching four shots and 13 penalty box touches.

Phil Bardsley (£4.2m) missed out again with a gashed leg, with Dyche providing an update in his post-match presser:

He was back on the grass and running so he has got a chance of being back in the squad [next weekend].

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): Arrizabalaga; Azpilicueta, Christensen, Luiz, Emerson; Kante (Kovacic 46′), Jorginho, Loftus-Cheek; Hudson-Odoi (Pedro 41′), Higuain (Giroud 77′), Hazard.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Heaton; Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Hendrick, Westwood, Cork, McNeil; Barnes, Wood.

Didn't care that much about the result yesterday. But the amount of time wasting from Burnley literally from the 1st minute was pretty poor IMO.

It is why I would support the authorities changing to a 60 minute game, but the clock stops every time the ball goes dead.

Studies have shown that managers like Dyche and Pulis, on average, keep the ball in play for fewer than 60 minutes in a 90 minute match. This change would put a stop to them trying to time waste.

I've seen so many spurs home games last 2 seasons with timewasting and it is awful to watch.

I think it is still in referee's powers to fix it by issuing an early yellow card. So often they finally show one after 80 mins.

A general problem like targeting and fouling a creative player is how to punish a team when low-level offences are committed by many players on the team.

In futsal they have a "second penalty" for persistent fouling which I think is an interesting concept.

One change that I'd really like to see - is one borrowed from rugby. Deliberate ("professional" fouls/"taking one for the team") should be replaced with a sin-bin visit. It must be right to punish the team who committed the foul in the current game - thereby immediately compensating the opponents, Maybe all bookings should be treated this way?

          Again, an interesting idea.

There should be a way to punish "team" fouls, and this could work.

There is no suitable deterrent at the minute.

I hadn't realised about the futsal persistent foul rule - I could imagine that would have use. Does it apply to a team generally or specific players only?

              Team.

Once a certain number of fouls are committed in one half (6?) You get a 2nd penalty for each subsequent foul.

Not saying it should be that severe, but as a deterrent it really works.

Leicester won the league in a similar style. The only difference is they had quality on the counter with Vahrez and Kante. They sat deep and narrow, surrendered possession, and let Huth and Morgan deal with the crosses.

They are playing to their strengths, as they should. Burnley are playing a moneyball style game, where they cannot afford technical ability, but they can buy strong, determined players who are often under-priced.

Would massively decrease the urgency and pace of the game.

What's to stop the players resting while the clock is stopped, or discussing tactics etc for long periods. You can't then penalized players for taking too long when the clock is stopped , or do you need a second clock so that you can't take longer than a certain time while the first clock is stopped...

Or you're under pressure, boot it out, walk off pitch take as long as you like to kill the momentum of the opposing team and crowd. Would the ref have to issue more time wasting cards in the stopped time introduced to combat time wasting?

American Football would be the result, 60minute games played over four hours.

And there would be no benefit to having a fit team of players if you got five minutes to recover from every physical piece of play. It's a sensible suggestion on paper but it would never work. There's nothing wrong with the current system, referees just need to enforce it better.

Not sure I buy the Liverpool rotation risk at all - they have nearly a week's rest before Barca, Friday -> Wednesday is a massive rest period - and they only have 5 games left in the season... plus if you offered Liverpool a choice between League or CL there's only one winner

Very much doubt this will happen. It would need a world-wide change to the rules and the number of matches where there is serious time wasting (you cite last night as an example) is very small.

Yes, I'm a Burnley fan.. first game 1972 versus Crystal Palace..

That said, I wish to make two points..

    1. Not all clubs have the wealth to afford the players the likes of the top 6 can put on the pitch and therefore must work hard and try to disrupt the opposition running all over them. Do you want the best league in the world to have scorelines of 10-0 and such like.
    2. Chelsea, MU, MCFC, Arsenal and even Liverpool against Cardiff on Sunday regularly run to the corner flag and play out the last 3 or 4 minutes and the additional time when it suits them to do so.

Suck it up guys, you're not entitled to win every match against lower teams..sometimes you have to grow some..

        Ha ha
With Watford susceptibility to crosses i think we'd be lucky to get a CS.
So yeah, Pen save Foster + Goal each Yoshida & Valery + Deulofeu hattrick.
I'm not asking too much 😛

What do you reckon is my best option here?

    Leno
    Robbo TAA Valery
    Sterling KDB* Eriksen Son
    Aguero Lacazette Jimenez
(Jota Kolasinac Bednarek Ryan) 1ft 0.1itb

    A) Laca -> Firmino, bench KDB play Jota
    B) KDB + Ryan -> Mane + Fodder + 0.3m -4
    C) KDB + Lacazette -> Mane + Vardy -4
    D) Something else

Anyone else struggling to find a transfer ?

I have a deep bench as many of us do, and can’t get a third Pool without a hit/surgery.

It’s either a stupid hit and squad overhaul or hold and hope I can find something with 2FT next week.

Maybe could change goalkeepers or something as on the foster Ryan combo

        I think that’s what I’ll do.

Robertson for a -4 is madness. I’d need a haul and it’s just a defensive blocking move losing me 4 points.

Robertson for -4 doesn't sound good move. Liverpoolwont be getting too many fastbreaks against Hud and imo Robertson is good when Liverpool counter attacking.

Not exactly struggling. Was always going to save FT this gw. Now KDB Injury means Jota comes IN & I'd still save. Maybe get Hazard next gw for KDB

Yes. need to take a hit to get Salah in. To be able to get him in need to get rid of players like Sterling, Eriksen, Aguero or Son to find enough funds. Actually need to swap out 2 of them.... I can just use FT to swap Laporte to VVD or Murray to Mitrovic.

    GTG?

    Foster
    Robertson Laporte Yoshida
    Sterling(v) Mané(TC) Son Eriksen
    Aguero Jimenez Wilson

    (Ryan Valery Hojbjerg Doherty)

    0.3 ITB, 1 FT

Selling Sterling for a hit? Before he plays Burnley?

Actually, I'd be worried he gets benched in that game.

Exactly the same players I have, I'm currently playing A although this is a welcome discussion. Why? Brighton got a 0-0 (just) at Wolves and that may have given them that little bit of wind in their sails. I fancy Bournemouth and Watford to score. Doherty's attacking threat has been halved in Wolve's new system.

Mane, Firmino or Son C next week and why?

Currently on Son, great fixture, he will play plus everyone forgot him cause of Pool -Hudd fixture

      1. Big4FPL

I think it has to be a Liverpool attacker, Mane being the obvious one

          4 years, 11 months ago

Mane b/c everyone else will be on him/Salah. Boring but safer

I know there’s still matches to play but just giving this thought, I currently have no Liverpool attack, which do you think is the best option?

        A) Pogba -> Mane
        B) Deulofeu -> Mane (-4)
        C) Rashford/Jimenez -> Firmino

I’m currently thinking B in order to keep Rash/Pogba for last 2 games, but not sure a hit makes it worthwhile

        Thanks in advance!

Deulofeu playing as CF & Pogba playing as DM.
Add a hit & there is a clear winner imo.

          A

Depends what you think of MUN prospects for CHE, hud, CAR
A looks best right now, but B might next week.

On balance though if Deulofeu stays fit think I'd prefer him to Pogba anyway

That’s the thing, trying to be optimistic I think United could haul in last 2 fixtures, with Matic back Pogba is a bit more free

However, that’s an optimistic view whilst it’s fact that Deulofeu is in decent form - do it’s basically form vs fixtures
