Injury updates on Kante and Hudson-Odoi after Burnley frustrate Chelsea

A fiery match at Stamford Bridge on Monday evening saw four goals shared between Chelsea and Burnley.

We look at the key Fantasy talking points from the tenth fixture of Double Gameweek 35 and bring you the latest updates on fresh injuries to two budget Chelsea midfielders.

Chelsea 2-2 Burnley

  • Goals: N’Golo Kante (£5.0m), Gonzalo Higuain (£9.1m) | Jeff Hendrick (£5.2m), Ashley Barnes (£5.6m)
  • Assists: Eden Hazard (£10.9m), Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.4m) | Chris Wood (£6.3m)

Callum Hudson-Odoi‘s (£4.2m) season is over after the budget FPL midfielder limped from the field at Stamford Bridge on Monday evening with what was later diagnosed as a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Speaking after the game, Chelsea assistant manager Gianfranco Zola gave this update on the young England winger:

I think it’s a serious injury, on his Achilles tendon. I cannot tell you the full extent of his injury. I think he will have to have an examination but it’s not looking good.

Not long afterwards, the player himself confirmed on social media that he will play no further part in 2018/19:

There was more positive news on N’Golo Kante (£5.0m) from Zola, however.

The French midfielder had been withdrawn at the interval with a rib problem but Zola said after full-time:

N’Golo was taken down and he fell on the foot of a player, so he just had a contusion in his ribs. He couldn’t breathe properly, that’s why he came off. He will be alright.

Kante had been on the scoresheet in a frenetic first half, scoring the second of four goals that flew in over the course of 12 minutes.

In doing so, Kante became the season’s highest-scoring budget FPL midfielder priced at £5.0m or below.

Eden Hazard (£10.9m) teed the former Leicester City midfielder up for that strike and, while not quite reaching the heights of his performance against West Ham United in Gameweek 33, still showed flashes of brilliance throughout this encounter.

Having been deployed as a “false nine” at Anfield in Gameweek 34, Hazard was back on the left flank against the Clarets and looked dangerous in the early exchanges.

The Belgian stung the palms of Tom Heaton (£4.8m) in the first minute before setting Gonzalo Higuain (£9.1m) up for an excellent chance with a beautifully weighted chipped through ball, going on to register twice as many key passes as anyone on show.

Hazard has also had more penalty box touches and touches in the final third than any other Premier League player in Gameweek 35 so far.

Higuain also started positively, producing a superb near-post finish from a narrow angle to briefly put Chelsea ahead at 2-1 and going close to doubling his tally with a rasping strike from distance.

The impressive Ben Mee (£4.6m) had to be alert to hook Higuain’s goalbound effort off the line following that aforementioned Hazard pass.

Both Hazard and Higuain’s influence waned in the second half, however, with Burnley producing a backs-to-the-wall display following their ambitious approach before the interval.

Mee was the pick of the Clarets’ backline, producing more clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBIs) than any other defender in Gameweek 35 to date.

Dyche said of his centre-half:

I thought he was excellent. The one where he clears it off the line in the first half, that’s because he does that in training. He doesn’t give anything up.

He is another marker of the mentality of the side and it takes a strong mentality to come to places like this because these are top-class groups of players.

Even Matthew Lowton (£4.6m) stood up to the task of man-marking Hazard as the game wore on, winning four of his five tackles.

Jeff Hendrick (£5.2m), who opened the scoring with a superb volley from the edge of the box following a half-cleared corner, also drew praise from his manager after full-time.

Dyche said:

It was a great finish. Jeff has worked so hard. People have questioned him at times but they do forget that we use him all over the place. We use him right side, in the middle, he has played a number 10. He is so honest, he does a great job for us. It was nice to see him pop up with a good goal and one that he will certainly remember. He has not got too many but I think there is goals in him actually and it was a good strike that’s for sure.

Eden Hazard, what a player. So we felt Jeff was right to play there because he doubles up and he has more of a defensive instinct and he has been doing well.

And the amount of times he [Hendrick] doubled up to help Lowts out and I thought Lowts had a top game because it was very difficult. Eden Hazard is a top, top, top player.

While Burnley’s ambition mostly evaporated after the interval (Sean Dyche’s side registered just one shot in the second half), they deserve credit for going toe-to-toe with Chelsea before the break.

Ashley Barnes (£5.6m) scored Burnley’s second goal from a set play after latching onto Chris Wood‘s (£6.3m) header, with the New Zealand international now having registered more attacking returns than any other FPL forward (six – three goals, three assists) in the last four Gameweeks.

Wood had a great chance to add to that haul after the break but couldn’t sort his feet out when clean through on goal.

Dyche once again resisted the urge to drop one of his front two, saying:

We didn’t want to mess around with the side too much. We wanted to come here with two strikers which we have done since Christmas everywhere we have gone and we have got some rewards from that. It is a big risk with the players of this quality in their midfield so I am really pleased.

Whether Dyche persists with that mindset when Manchester City visit Turf Moor on Saturday remains to be seen but we will surely see Hendrick doubling up on whoever plays on City’s left flank – possibly Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) – in Lancashire.

This was a rare off day for Chelsea’s defence in front of their own fans, with the injured Antonio Rudiger (£5.9m) arguably missed at centre-half and, dare we say it, perhaps even the absence of Marcos Alonso‘s (£6.3m) presence when defending set plays also keenly felt.

The Blues had kept four shut-outs in their previous five home matches in the league and this was the first occasion since Gameweek 9 that they had conceded more than one goal in a Premier League fixture at Stamford Bridge.

While a 15th clean sheet of the season eluded Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.4m), the Chelsea right-back was once again noticeably prominent at the other end of the pitch.

Azpilicueta teed up Higuain for Chelsea’s second goal and the Spain international had more touches in the final third than all players on show bar Hazard.

No FPL defender has had more penalty box touches in Gameweek 35 so far.

Both of Azpilicueta’s shots came from inside the Burnley area, with Heaton called into action on each occasion.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.2m) was handed his fourth straight league start in central midfield and was one of Chelsea’s better performers, registering an eye-catching four shots and 13 penalty box touches.

Phil Bardsley (£4.2m) missed out again with a gashed leg, with Dyche providing an update in his post-match presser:

He was back on the grass and running so he has got a chance of being back in the squad [next weekend].

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): Arrizabalaga; Azpilicueta, Christensen, Luiz, Emerson; Kante (Kovacic 46′), Jorginho, Loftus-Cheek; Hudson-Odoi (Pedro 41′), Higuain (Giroud 77′), Hazard.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Heaton; Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Hendrick, Westwood, Cork, McNeil; Barnes, Wood.

    People complaining about Burnley’s tactics.

The truth of the matter is that Chelsea aren’t good enough and with the transfer ban in place and they are about to lose their best player things aren’t going to get any better anytime soon.

I admire Burnley & the work from their coach.
Even "big" clubs run down the corners in the dying minutes if needed.
To me Burnley are nice, simple & beautiful example of PL team with less ££ & high desire to win & stay UP.
My love towards 442 maybe making me biased 🙂

I kind of agree with you. But not once did Burnley take the ball to the corner flag last night. Didn't watch the match last night, did you?

          No i didn't.
But, every team wastes time that's what I'm saying.

If they have overdone that, YC would have been better. It's not good to watch but, it's what best for business 😉

          I understand your point 🙂

pretty sure they tried to kick it off the defender for a throw/corner but missed & gave Chelsea a throw in deep in the corner

What you're mentioning is a part of the game.

Can't be compared to a player going down 3 times in 5 mins, and not getting substituted. That's time wasting. No?

burnley know they aren't going to outspend or outplay chelsea, so they adopt their own tactics which chelsea cannot deal with it

Tactics can't be blamed. Fair play to Sean Dyche.

What makes this game different from the others is the intensity, football demands a lot from players week in, week out!

Chelsea don't have the best team, nor the desire to finish in the top 4 it seems. They might focus just on the EL and get lucky.

But for any neutral fan, it hurts when you see players going down for no reason, just to run the clock to get a result. Not once, not twice, but thrice after getting treatment. Football is best enjoyed without breaks, and Burnley is not necessarily the best example of good fair football. But that's how it is.

Better to applaud their physicality, mentality & desire to get a result against a tougher opposition, than to admire the club as a whole.

The time wasting is an issue IMO. Heaton, McNeil, Barnes and Westwood were terrible yesterday. No issue with long ball football or being physical. I was encouraging Burnley to knock it long more often because on some occasions they thought they could pass it and it inevitably failed.

Barnes, in particular, feigned injury every 5 minutes. The amount of stoppage time that was added on was too little IMO. Should have been 10 mins in the second half.

              Morning fellas

Which move do you prefer to get in my 3rd Red man?

              A) Doherty > TAA (FT)
              B) Eriksen, Foster > Mané, Hamer (-4)
              C) Eriksen, Wilson/ Jimi > Firmino, Deulo/ Mili/ Moura (-4)

              1FT 0.3itb
              Lloris
              Robbo, Laporte, Yoshida
              Salah (TC), Eriksen*, Son, Jota
              Kun, Jimi, Wilson
              (Foster) (JWP, Doherty, Valery)

Hope everyone is having better GWs than me!
              Thanks

                  Thanks bro

I’m torn between A (the easy option) and C (Eriksen, Wilson > Mili, Bobby which is the more exciting punt!

Will see how Eriksen plays tonight

IF you're willing to take a hit, i like C.
Milivojevic + Bobby is definitely an upgrade over Eriksen + Wilson imo

TAA might get benched for at least 1 game.

                B could work fine.

The problem with C is that, with so many options you'll always wish you had chosen a better pair.

                  Cheers for the reply.

I actually really like idea of C as a bit of a punt. Pretty sure I would go Eriksen, Wilson > Mili, Bobby and be happy enough with the move

dont understand the valery comment. he had a high temperature when? before newcastle or last night and he was driven home from watford? any training pics to confirm his involvement?

also is there any news from spurs? do we know whats happening with trippier?

Anyone else in the top 10k but still not happy?

I've never finished this high, or at least been this high up this late on in a FPL season before, my previous best OR is 68k, yet I'm here feeling pretty rubbish cause I've been stuck around this point for some time.

gw31 I was up to 3.4k, and played my TC that week on salah, and had thought it may have propelled me into the 1/2k, but since then it's been downhill...

Yeah me. 7k but the number of mistakes I’ve made with no Salah hazard son during their hauls. Digne benched at Boxing Day.

November time I had a genuine shot at a double digit rank.

This game you’ll never be pleased.

My loyalty to triple city assets and TAA over Robbo enabling that is something I must remember and not whinge. Top 10k is so tough now and I guess we gotta be grateful. Top 10k used to be very very easy, that’s changed.

Something I’ve noticed this year is its much easier to drop out the top 10k than to get a green there. It’s so tight. I can’t wait for the season to end to be honest.

I was delighted a week or so ago, 1,222 rank but appear to have messed up my WC & TC (Jimenez game pending) & dropped to 3,946... fingers crossed for 2nd part of DGW & the run in

yeah it's a bit demoralising to be fair but fingers crossed we can regain momentum and end the season strong, was hoping to finish to 2k, but seems so unlikely now unless I have a mental end to the season

Not just me then. Between gw23 to gw33 I went from 75k to 5k. Had momentum and thought the wildcard and bench boost was going to send me even higher but it's been a disaster. Down to 7.5k and the way this week is going and the state of my squad I'll be lucky to stay in the top 10k.

I'd hope for 0-1 with a penalty save from Ryan and a goal from Duffy (depending on your rank and ML rivals ofc, but I think that will shoot you up the rankings the most)

I'm probably set for another evening of gallows humour with the same players more or less.
I'd prefer a heavy Spurs win with Llorente involvement and a Mat Ryan peno save. No Spurs defence - so one of those Trippier back pass own goals would be lovely 🙂

                Have 2FT.

                A - Eriksen & Vardy > Salah & Fodder
                B - Vardy > Firminho and save 1FT

                Have Son , and Aguro & Jimi - 442

My only real options for the FT this week fit into two options...
                A) Get TAA for Kola (or Doherty) to go with Robbo and Mane. May TC Mane.
                B) Eriksen and Kun to Salah and striker up to 8.8 (I'd punt on Zaha I expect) for -4 and TC Salah.
                C) Consider double hitting.

The sensible route is A and a big sofa right?

how many and who do you have all left?

and how many points do you realistically think you'll get

                I'll go first

                foster - 3
                laporte - 6
                valery - 2
                sterling - 5
                son - 9
                eriksen - 6
                jota - 5
                aguero(c) - 16
                jiminez - 9
                ryan - 2
                ings - 2
                yoshida - 2
                duffy - 2

69 pts... meh feels a bit much, doubt I'll get that many but fingers crossed!

I think many of us expect very little now. Just all of them playing would be great. I always think any major DGW - especially with bench boost, the minimum is triple figures to have any solace. I think you can legitimately expect 60.

yeah guess we can hope! I'd be happy enough to the 100 mark at this stage currently on 56(-4), but end of day it's all relative

Really hoping my Spurs triple up deliver tonight, Lloris, Son and Llorente. Two Brighton defenders but they've done their job already.

Then captain Aguero at OT is massive to the success of this week. If those fall into place then triple figures is on

Currently on a red arrow inducing 47 with the following left (and my guess at points)

                  1. Lloris (6)
                  2. Foster (3)
                  3. Doherty (1)
                  4. Duffy (1)
                  5. Dunk (1)
                  6. Valery (2)
                  7. Son (14)
                  8. Eriksen (7)
                  9. Sterling (c) (16) - if he starts 🙁
                  10: JWP (2)
                  11. Gray (2)
                  12. Aguero (9)
                  13. Jimenez (7)

                  Total: 47 + 71 = 118

Sadly looking at that I now realise my week pretty much solely comes down to how Sterling does (given Son and Jimenez ownership).

Top 10k average is currently 51.5 (so I’m 4.5 behind) still hope of a green arrow for me?

Thoughts on Liverpool defensive triple up of Robbo, TAA, Matip?

Would've loved to get Salah, but to get him for Huddersfield means selling Hazard or Sterling for a hit. They're both in good form and Mane is generally a worse pick than all of them.

I think double Pool defense is the way to go, but i'll probably go VVD.

To get Salah would rip up my entire team and i don't really feel like it.

Rather keep Son, Sterling, Mane ect.

given the slight threat of rotation for trent this week, is it worth holding transfer here?

the move otherwise considered was duffy > trent (ft)

                robbo - laporte - duffy
                mane(c) - sterling - eriksen - son - jota
