City’s derby win and knife-edge title race is good news for FPL bosses

Manchester City went back to the top of the Premier League by beating their cross-city rivals on Wednesday evening.

City’s 11th league win in a row leaves them one point ahead of Liverpool, who are in action against Huddersfield Town on Friday night.

The hope for the legions of Fantasy managers who have representation from both clubs is surely that the title race goes to the wire, avoiding any “dead rubber” scenario and possible end-of-season rotation in Gameweek 38.

That looks increasingly likely after City’s two victories in Gameweek 35, with the matches against Spurs and United having been widely viewed as the biggest obstacles in their bid to defend their Premier League crown.

Given that they are in such good form, still have a title to play for and, unlike four of the “big six”, are now not competing in Europe, the Citizens’ players will likely be immovable in many Fantasy squads between now and the end of 2018/19.

We dissect last night’s Manchester derby in our Scout Notes article below.

Manchester United 0-2 Manchester City

  • Goals: Bernardo Silva (£7.6m), Leroy Sane (£9.3m)
  • Assists: Ilkay Gundogan (£5.5m), Raheem Sterling (£11.6m)

Three days after Liverpool secured a hard-earned 2-0 away win in South Wales, Manchester City did likewise at Old Trafford.

The two title rivals had to endure tense, goalless first halves in their respective victories but class ultimately told in both situations.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer summed up City’s latest win perfectly after full-time:

We got a reaction [from the defeat to Everton] and in the end, we were beaten by a better team.

But we got a reaction from the fans, from the players, we had a go. You can see the work-rate and everything was there, it just wasn’t good enough.

There is a difference in quality, definitely. That is why they are at the top of the league and we are where we are. They have set the standard.

City were ultimately just better than their hosts on Wednesday night but nerves would have been jangling until Bernardo Silva‘s (£7.6m) 53rd-minute opener.

Manchester United’s 3-5-2/5-3-2 line-up had suggested that they would set out to frustrate their cross-city rivals and that was indeed the case, with Solskjaer’s troops largely successful in containing City in the first half.

There was very little goalmouth action of note in the opening 45 minutes, with Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) coming the closest to breaking the deadlock when he tiptoed into the United box and fired straight at David de Gea (£5.7m) just before the break.

Chris Smalling (£5.6m) almost deflected another tame Sterling effort past his own goalkeeper before Bernardo stung de Gea’s hands with a fierce strike but City went into the interval with nothing to show for their dominance in possession.

The Red Devils had their moments, too, with Jesse Lingard (£6.7m) volleying an excellent Paul Pogba (£8.6m) pass narrowly wide before Ederson (£5.6m) had to rush out to deny Marcus Rashford (£7.4m).

The enforced 50th-minute substitution of arguably the game’s best player in the first half, Fernandinho (£5.3m), indirectly swung the game in City’s favour.

The Brazilian’s departure led to Bernardo moving from the right wing to the right of a central midfield three, with Ilkay Gundogan (£5.5m) shifting across to become the anchor.

Leroy Sane (£9.3m) was introduced on the left flank and all three of those players were involved in City’s two goals.

Gundogan’s pass was fired low past de Gea by Bernardo to put City 1-0 up and the United goalkeeper’s unconvincing form continued when he failed to stop Sane’s savable shot 12 minutes later – both goals beating de Gea at his near post.

Sterling grabbed a fine assist with a run and pass for Sane’s goal to emerge from Gameweek 35 with a consolation attacking return.

The England winger was not at his absolute best but it is a reflection of just how dangerous a Fantasy asset he can be that he still tested de Gea twice in the first half and would have had another excellent opportunity had he manage to control a dinked pass over the top from Fernandinho on 35 minutes.

Sergio Aguero (£11.8m) was another premium City asset who was not operating at his usual stratospheric levels but who could easily have left Old Trafford with a goal to his name: the Argentinean striker whistled an effort wide just before half-time and later clipped the upright with a curling shot just after Bernardo’s opener.

We can’t learn much new about Sterling or Aguero from a tight game such as this, with not just local “bragging rights” on the line but a Premier League title too.

The hope now for Fantasy owners is that the pair’s professional, hard-working displays against “big six” opposition in Double Gameweek 35 can be rewarded with points hauls in what should be relatively more straightforward matches in the season run-in – although Burnley and Leicester have themselves been in decent form of late.

David Silva (£8.5m) blanked but produced a much-improved performance in midfield, registering more penalty box touches and key passes than anyone on show.

With Kevin De Bruyne (£9.7m) out and Gundogan and Fernandinho potentially sidelined as a result of the injuries they picked up in the derby, Silva’s place in the City starting XI could well be nailed for Gameweek 36 at least.

Guardiola said of City’s two new additions to the injury list:

In the half-time, there was a little problem in both [of Fernandinho’s] legs. Muscular, he was not comfortable. Gundo has a big kick in the first half. We’ll see tomorrow.

Bernardo scored only his second league goal of 2019 and drew praise from his manager afterwards:

Bernardo has had an incredible season, the second half he played like a holding midfielder. It’s not just today, all the season was a masterclass – a masterpiece, every single game.

He finished good last season and, this season, his pre-season was incredible. I said to the guys, I spoke with Leroy and the others, I cannot leave out Bernardo with his performances.

He’s one of the best players in Europe.

Pogba’s tenth-minute shot from distance turned out to be the only save that Ederson had to make as City banked their 18th clean sheet of the season – ten of which have come in the last 14 Gameweeks.

Aymeric Laporte (£6.1m) recorded three bonus points to go with his shut-out, taking his total in the three Double Gameweeks to 53 points – over a third of his overall score in 2018/19.

Clear-cut chances were few and far between for United (as the below graphic shows), although Lingard ought to have done better in the second half when he failed to make meaningful contact with a Marcus Rashford (£7.4m) cross with the goal gaping.

Manchester United’s shot map v Manchester City (red = off-target, blue = on target or blocked)

Reflecting on United’s lack of goals from open play of late, Solksjaer said:

I’m not reflecting on the statistic but I’m reflecting that we don’t score goals or make efforts. We created chances today but didn’t take them. Of course, that’s something we need to improve on. It’s not a lack of effort but the quality, in the end, today wasn’t good enough.

Rashford’s only shot was a Cristiano Ronaldo-esque toe-punt from 35 yards out but he was praised by his manager after the game.

Solskjaer said:

Rashy had a terrific first half. He’s always threatening, he’s running in behind. That attitude of wanting to create something was great to see. Of course, they stopped him a few times. He was close today and Rashy will be important for us and he’s got the right attitude. We’ve just got to keep working on it.

Rashford, however, was critical of himself and his team-mates, saying:

Today we didn’t play like Manchester United. The bare minimum is to work hard and give all for the badge, the supporters, the club and yourself.

It has been a tough road to get to where we are, to get there and not be putting up the same performances as we were in January is disappointing.

We know what’s been going wrong, it’s mentality and willingness to run for your team.

We never call each other out but we have to be real with each other. It’s a matter of trying to improve each other.

Pogba may well have been one of the players that Rashford was referring to, with moments of class from the Frenchman (that aforementioned pass for Lingard) all too fleeting in a fairly ineffective display.

Playing against the champions-elect and having inferior players alongside him in midfield – Fred (£5.3m) and Andreas Pereira (£4.5m) this time – doesn’t help, of course, but other than favourable opposition in Gameweeks 37 and 38, there is little to further Pogba’s cause as a premium midfield option for the run-in.

De Gea’s decline in form has mirrored Pogba’s and United’s in general but Solksjaer backed his under-fire goalkeeper after full-time, saying:

I think David made some terrific saves today. It’s everyday work for everyone and David’s got high standards he’s set himself. He’s working really hard to improve, so when we are now having a time like this, we have just got to stick together, batten the hatches down and make sure we don’t do anything rash, anything stupid and keep working and stick together as a team.

Manchester United XI (5-3-2): De Gea; Young, Darmian (Sanchez 83′), Smalling, Lindelof, Shaw; Andreas Pereira (Lukaku 72′), Fred, Pogba; Lingard (Martial 83′), Rashford.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Walker, Kompany, Laporte, Zinchenko; Gundogan (Danilo 89′), Fernandinho (Sane 51′), Silva; Bernardo Silva, Aguero (Gabriel Jesus 89′), Sterling.

    I'm thinking

Hazard and DeBruyne > Sterling and Son
    for -4.

I have no City or Spurs assets and I need to catch up 25 points in my Minileague.

Thoughts much appreciated all. Can't believe the season's nearly done.

Salah and Mane double-up ownership 3,81% in top 10K. Is it worth getting both, even for a big hit? Anyone planning on owning both? For me i think it's too hard as i need to do KDB, Pogba, Aguero to Mane, Salah, 7.2 (Zaha).

    E. Lacazette KDB + tripper to firmino mane and TAA -8

No Pool atm, 1.5M in the bank

      Ryan (Foster)
      Duffy/Aldo/Laporte/(Doherty/Cathcart)
      Son/Eriksen/Pogba/Doucoure/(Jota)
      Aguero/Jiminez/Mitrovic

      A Erik -> Mane (c)
      B Pog -> Mane (c)
      C Cath -> TAA. Son (c)
      D Pog/Cath/Douc -> Mane/TAA/max 5M mid (-8)
      D Erik/Cath/Douc -> Mane/TAA/max 5.6M mid (-8)

Thinking B, but was planning on keeping Pog for GW37 & 38.
Also wary of potential rests for Erik/TAA

I'm thinking City vs Brighton in 38 might be the best time to tc, Brighton with or without motivation would get absolutely clobbered by a City that needs to win, and generally I trust City to be more likely to score in large quantities than Liverpool

      Morning.
Sitting at 1859 OR and all my MLs secured I would say (almost 100 ahead in all 5)

My real aim now is to break into top 1k.

      Fodter

      Laporte/TAA/Trippier

      Mane/Sterling/Son/Eriksen

      Kun/Jimenez/Wilson

      (ryan/Valery/jwp/Bennet)

What would you do to achieve 1k? Have my TC.

      Thanks in advance.

Yep. My prediction is Tripp and TAA benchings. Perhaps even Eriksen.

I'd make a few ballsy moves. To me a OR1000 and OR4999 are the same really.

My current team is as follows:

      Foster/Ryan
      Duffy/Laporte/Robbo/Boly/Valery
      Sterling/Mane/Son/Jota/Doucoure
      Long/Aguero/Jiminez

I am thinking of the following:

      1. No Transfers and TC Mane
      2. Aguero and Doucoure out, Salah and 4.9m Forward in for a -4. I would TC Salah.
      3. Aguero and Doucoure out, Firmino and B. Silva (or any other mid up to 8.8m) for a -4. I would TC Salah.

      Any comments or other suggestions?

        Rough:
        Transfers
Duffy Eriksen >>> KDB Yoshida (-4)
Jimenez/jota, Firmino, Yoshida missing sitters. Could have been great gw.

        Smooth:
        108(-4)

Rough: Didn’t take any hits but nearly went for Jota and Gray. Would have been worth it because Brooks and Wilson did nothing. Only got in Jimenez who blanked.

Smooth: Kept Brighton defenders which did ok and also double Liverpool full backs did well.

A smooth 118 points after an almost disastrous WC in 34. Went from 102254 to 59920 and closed the gap to 5 points in my mini league.

Fairly standard BB week, 103, Rough, Jimi capt (gonna be plenty of those I guess). Would always have played Foster over Ryan with those fixtures so that alone made bench boost worth while. Doherty = FPL Legend.

I wouldn't normally be disappointed about a score of 93(-4).

However the hit I took to remove Dunk and Deeney for Wilson and Yoshida was especially painful costing me 7 points. The alternative was Kolasinac and Deeney to Jonny and Zaha which would have earned me 22 points. A close to 30 point swing which has ended my main minileagues and effectively my season. :/

Smooth I guess was 19 points from the Bench boost chip.

Very nice week on BB, 103 points, moved up from 26k to 20k.

Smooth: Kept Ryan & Duffy, brought Gray in for Deeney, Doherty, Aguero, Eriksen, Son all returned something. SGW players Robbo and Salah chipped in.

Rough: KdB injury, only blank starter. Jimenez(c) but (vc) was KdB anyway. Valery benched first game but other option Bednarak only scored 1 anyway. BB of Foster, Hojberg, Valery and Bennett scored 17. So-so there.

Happy enough. Easy move this week KdB>Mane now.

Problem is I triple captained KDB so was damage limitation after his injury.

        71 points and a 10k red arrow from 17k to 27k.

Rough, quite literally, with the smooth : Keeping faith with my triple Brighton defence...and Eriksen scoring in the 89th minute.

Smooth; Being in the 100 club for the first time this season (109)
23 points from BB, which I feel is decent enough.

Rough; Jimenez, Pogba, JWP, and Valery.

Please give Joe my best if you're in touch, obviously much more important than any of this rubbish.

I had an ok week, pleased that my three Brighton goons (Ryan, D&D) belatedly delivered, 28 points between them, after last week's horror show.

Main disappointment was that I didn't make a lot of ground on my main ML rival, who, despite wildcarding many weeks ago, managed a very creditable score this week, thanks to picks like Ederson and Gray.

pleasantly surprised with 101 pts. (going to add on 4 pts for all those taking hits to get Salah this GW 🙂 ) Didn't bother checking rankings until yesterday am as assumed it was a garbage week.

Went for a few differentials that didn't pan out. Huddersfield last minute goal hurt double Watford defence. Valery just unlucky.
Jimenez (c) disappointing but not a week when many captaincies paid off much.

Trolled by Wolves against Brighton. They've had a good season but have a tendency (FPL wise) to mess up in home games against opposition you think they'd do well against.

Rather bad GW for a BB (88 points and a -4).

Smooth: Laporte, Ryan, not having any ManU players this GW ;-).
Rough: KDB (c), last minute HUD goal vs Watford. Not too happy with Valery either.

Lost about 2k ranks, could have been worse.

          110 all out.

Smooth: 110 points, Laporte, kept Duffy, up to 88k from 233k 5 gameweeks ago.

Rough: Used my 1FT to bring Foster in for Ryan without doing my research into form, as I saw everyone was getting him in or had him in. Then notice an article on here earlier in the week suggesting Wolves will make light work of Watford's defence as their form is poor.

Going big or bust this week, -4 to swap Vardy and Eriken out for Zaha and Salah (TC).

Pretty happy with 111 points (-4). Climbed from around 300.000 around december/january to nearly top 10.000 now and very happy with that. However, my minileague rivals are still climbing ahead of me and both managed more points this double gameweek.

Furious with Eriksen and Gray. They cost me 25 points in the very last minutes as i had Ryan,Dunk,Duffy,Gunn and Bednarek. Would never in a million years believe Brighton would keep a clean sheet versus Tottenham but must admit i got my hopes up when the clock went past 80 minutes.

Came up with 3 options to deal with Deeney injury. 1/ Deeney to Gray. 2/ Deeney to Long. 3/ Deeney and Eriksen to KDB and Llorente -4.

Guess which option I took? Also Jiminez captain. Why do we decide to captain non-elite players just because it's a double gameweek? Lesson learnt.

101 -4. A green arrow of 150 places. Disappointing but could have been worse.

Ryan to Gunn, Hazard to De Bruyne and Tielemans to Jota (-8). The last one worked out but overall was a -15 point swing, shouldnt have logged in this week! De Bruyne was unlucky, but in hindsight should never have swapped DGW GKs.

Smooth: Hard to find one this week but I suppose Jota didn't let me down and TAA racked up the points

It feels as rough as 85 can do really, with all the 100+ scores around it feels like a wasted opportunity.

Jimenez (C) and KDB (vc) really let me down this week, Valery was also very unfortunate but most suffered with him too. Kolasinac was a bad pick, JWP did nothing as he was shifted to wingback and Wilson failed as my Deeney replacement.

        So here's pretty fecking rough!
Set my bus team but couldnt decide between
        A) Deeney and Dunk out for Laporte & Long (18pts)
        or
        B) Deeney out for Grey (11pts)

Then missed the deadline by a minute meaning I also never hit the BB button or did my subs.
Had Valery (1pt) in my 11 and Lloris, Dunk, Duffy & Deeney on my bench (22pts)

Overall cost of missing deadline (33->40pts)
Also captained Jimenez for 81pts all in.
        ML rival got 131pts
Now have to figure out when to use BB and TC after weeks of careful planning destroyed.

Smooth: Signed Deulofeu. Green arrow with 106 (-8) despite being in the top 10K and having said goodbye to my WC long ago.

Rough: Sold not one but two men named Barnes. Both of them scored, meaning I'd have been better off making no transfers and still playing BB.

Smooth: got 108(-4) points using Bench Boost (30 points on bench). After being ranked 100k at the end of GW31, using free hit in 32, wildcard in 34 and bench boost this week I am up to 52k which is my highest ever rank in FPL. Doherty, Jota and Laporte double digits helped this week

33 points from BB although apparently I didn't play it correctly by having my 3 Liverpool SGW players on it. 116 total with Jimenez captain so overall very pleased. Some nice hauls from Laporte, and Trippier getting max bonus on Tuesday night too. Would have breached the 120 mark had Wolves held on to a clean sheet last night with Boly

It’s been a very smooth week with 141, helped by a few decisions which worked out, hanging onto Deulofeu and Brighton players and bringing in Gray. So pleased after a rotten score of 35 last week.

Hardly worth mentioning the roughs but captain Jimi and Valery were the poorest scorers. Now need to keep the pace up, gained 136 points in 8 weeks on my main rival and up to 20k OR and equal 3rd in ML.

        Rough:
took out Deeney/Duffy for Wilson/Yoshida rather than doing the dullard move of Deeney to Gray.
        - Duffy kept a CS
        - Yoshi was on CS and max baps in the Watford game until Gray scored and took all the baps for himself
        - 14pt swing I think that goal was...plenty in my MLs had Gray of course and did the dullard move 🙁

Rough: My plan for the last 10 GW was to BB in 35 and TC in 36. At the last minute (and influenced by Brighton’s poor performance in 34), I decided to TC Jiménez and BB in 36. Well my GW35 bench delivered 33 points while my TC delivered a staggering 12 points. Literally captaining any other player on my team would have done better. What a season.

Smooth: I still got 89 points this week and I’m over a 100 points ahead in my ML.

My only transfer was Deeney to Gray. Bench boosted and got 150 points and my best ever gw rank of 34. Speechless.

Rough kola and jwp not doing much. Jiminez double captain blank.
Smooth 122 points with no hits up to 7.5k. FT of Murray to gray turned out well

Smooth: Johnny and Laporte adding 20 pts (incl. 2 X max bonus) in the last games of the DGW to push me over the 100 mark (101!). BB was worth 20pts sp pretty happy. Regained top spot in my ML.

Rough: triple Southampton not paying off at all (Valery 1, JWP 3, Hojbjerg 4).

        Doubt anyone beats this...

        57 (-4) rank drop from 180k to 270k

3,6,1,8,5,6,3,8,2,8(c), 7 and even if i bench boosted it would have added 2,2,2,0.

        Roll on next season...

Rough: Captain Jimenez, Watford and Southampton losing their CS in the last minute, kept United assets.

Smooth: Took a hit to get Gunn, Jonny and Femenia, turned out great. 32 points on BB.

        116. Mostly smooth. Triple Brighton defence paid back finally.
Into top 1k with tc to go.

Rough: Only a very small green arrow (120k to 116k) when I needed to make greater gains. JWP, Bednarek, Gunn, Kolasinac all pretty poor. Jimenez two blanks too.

Smooth: Sterling (c) 16pts when I was toying between him and Son, small victory there. Doherty, Trent, Ryan, Duffy all scoring well. 93 points (-8). Ok ish but not great.

I feel like this was a season for early wildcarders.

        Rough:
        - Missed the deadline
        - Forgot to Bench Boost
        - Failed to use FT for Deeney (-) > A. Gray (9pts)
        - Had big hitters Aguero and Mane on the bench
        - Would have been 24pts from bench to add to my score
        = Semi-wasted WC in GW34

        Smooth:
+ 103pts (first century of the season)
+ Played Ryan (12) over Foster (5), which I wouldn't have done had I purposefully saved the BB chip
+ Accidentally captained Eriksen (9). Would have captained Son (5) or Jimenez (4) had I set-up properly.
+ Triple Brighton defence got me 28pts, while many others were selling them for hits.
+ Aguero and Mané only managed 10pts between them sat on my bench
        + 31k > 23k, with BB, FH and a FT saved.

Rough siggy, Vardy, Duffy (31pts) out for a -8 for KdB, gray, valary (13pts) net 28 down

Smooth is considered saving transfer and triple captaining Aguero instead which would have been even worse I think

        Rough:
With Deeney's red card, Brighton's poor form and being 100 points behind i ML I decided to change my BB strategy and TC instead. Results:
        - Benched Ryan, Duffy and Dunk
        - Deulofeu->Redmond (skeptical on Deulofeu's game time)
        - Eriksen->KDB (-4) (because of KDB's impressive form)
        - KDB triple captain (RIP)

        Smooth:
        Last season of FPL.

          Pretty rough:

-12 taken to get Ryan, Janmaat, Eriksen and Lukaku out.

Brought in Foster, Boly, Salah and Wilson.

-13 points from those 4 players plus the -12 hit.

Ended up with 95 points (83) and a drop from 20k to 26k

Rough: Duffy to Cathcart wasn't great, particularly as I had originally intended to hold my transfer, but Brighton's terrible DGW34 convinced me to switch. Captained Jimenez too.

Smooth: 116 points, up from 180k to 103k, massive jump. Double Pool defence was a great choice on 34 wildcard. Bilva differential coming though. Vardy, jota, eriksen, and doherty also performing

Smooth: 107 with BB and went top of minileague.
Looked at ML rival who I'd overtaken to see he left 47 (!) points on the bench, presumably forgetting to hit BB. Ryan (12), Deulo (17), Chilwell (4) and Digne (14). What a rough for him.

Took out deulofeu laporte and vardy for - llorente de bruyne and koscielny minus 8. TC sterling instead of planned BB. If I had left my team alone would have ended up with 143 points with BB and jumped from 20k to top 6k. Eventual score 92 4k drop

Sold both Duffy and Dunk for a hit!! (16pts) to Bednarek and Masina (5pts) still can’t believe wolves didn’t score and two late goals for both Bednarek and Masina. Unlucky?

        Smooth:
Deulofeu Jota and others chipping in for a 116pts -4

Comparison tool between Bernardo and Eriksen favouring the Dane as my KDB replacement.

I already own Sterling and Son and happy with Mane in my midfield too.

      Eriksen the best option still?

I might be tempted by Bernado. He is one of Pep's favourites, starting him, Sterling and Aguero in the big games and he always seems to pop up with a goal. I've got Eriksen but Spurs have a depleted squad and a CL semi to contend with. City are going full throttle at the next 3 games.
