Captain Sensible – Liverpool the team to back in Gameweek 36

The Gameweek 36 captaincy debate is all about one match: Liverpool vs Huddersfield at Anfield on Friday night.

Fantasy managers have long had this clash on their radars, especially with the Triple Captain chip in mind.

We’ve analysed all the angles of this week’s captaincy discussion in this latest article…

Captain Poll

Sadio Mané (£10.0m) has soared into a comfortable lead in the captain poll ahead of Gameweek 36. With that out-of-form Huddersfield side coming to Anfield, our voters believe he is the most likely to reward those who trust him with the armband.

That is certainly understandable considering Mané has 10 goals in as many home Premier League matches now, more than any of his colleagues in that time.

Mohamed Salah (£13.2m) is not actually too far behind his colleague when it comes to attacking returns at Anfield. He has six goals of his own in the last 10 league matches there, with four assists to back them up.

His attacking displays in the last few matches have caught the eye once again and is possibly benefiting from a tweak to Liverpool’s midfield.

Despite that, he has still only managed the support of 27% of the voters in the poll. That places him second behind only Mané though.

Not surprisingly, Roberto Firmino (£9.3m) completes a triumvirate of Liverpool options at the top end of the captain poll for Gameweek 36, although is a long way off the top two. The Brazilian has three goals in his last three league games at Anfield and has the support of 4.6%.

The forward player is being considered by a similar amount to those looking at the other end of the pitch. Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.6m) currently sits in fourth place in the poll with the backing of 4.1%. Huddersfield remain the division’s lowest scorers this season which means a clean sheet looks likely, while Alexander-Arnold’s role in set-pieces means he is now just one attacking return short of Andrew Robertson (£6.8m) in 2018/19.

The Scottish international has been surprisingly considered less of a captain option than both Alexander-Arnold and his other defensive colleague Virgil van Dijk (£6.6m). Robertson currently has 3% backing, while centre-back van Dijk is on 3.4%.

Son Heung-min (£8.8m) the most popular captain option outside of Liverpool’s ranks, but is still being seen largely as a differential. He has a 3.3% share ahead of West Ham’s visit to Spurs, and the South Korean is probably the most likely of his team-mates to actually play considering he is banned for the first leg of their Champions League semi-final with Ajax.

Sergio Aguero (£11.8m), Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) and Eden Hazard (£10.9m) complete the top 10 in the captain poll. Manchester City’s star forward, who has just one goal from Gameweek 29 onwards, is currently on 2.03%.

Meanwhile, Sterling, who scored eight points in Double Gameweek 35, is behind him on 1.72%. Hazard has the backing of just 0.63%.

Haven't got a clue what to do this week - gave myself a real benching headache and have 0ITB - thoughts would be greatly appreciated

    Lloris (Ryan)
    TAA, Doherty, Bednarek (Valery, Dunk)
    Sterling, Mane, Son, Eriksen, Jota
    Aguero, Wilson (Jiminez)

Don't like benching Jimenez... go with Jota instead I think despite his recent good form.

Also, Ryan over LLoris - almost same CS chance but Ryan has more save point + bonus potential. Also go with Dunk over Bednarek. Valery if you don't want the double up has to be better too as more attacking threat.

    Draft question.

Who would you rather have as a last ditch hail Mary to try and scoop up 5 clean sheets in a desperate attempt to make up c50 points in the Draft League.

    1. x5 Fulham defenders (vs Cardiff)
    2. x5 Soton defenders (vs Bournmouth)
    3. x5 Brighton defenders (vs Newcastle)

("x 5 defenders" usually meaning 4 and GK depending on formations)

Who do you think will find form and step up to score big this GW, and why?

Maybe someone who hasn't had a double digit score in a while, who has a series of no attacking returns, or has very low ownership.

Do you think it will be an already-established name in many of our sides or someone who is a major differential?

Have you seen something in a someone's play or in their stats to make you think they could be ready for a breakout GW?

Salah. The highest point scorer over the past 2 seasons for a reason. Can’t believe how low his ownership is in the top 10k. Best differential this season and a lot of people have shot themselves in the foot by going without on WC. This is the week he will show he is the GOAT. Mane isn’t fit to tie his boots.

Has to be Salah - compared to last season, and relative to his price tag he has been a MASSIVE disappointment this year. When you see players matching him for points with price tags a full 2.0m less (Haz/Sterling etc) you know he's been poor.

Remove the Bourenmouth game & those dodgy penalties at Christmas & he'd be on about 150 points

So hopefully tonight he scores 5 and sets up 2 to redress the balance a little bit

I'd imagine he'll be reclassfied as a forward next year without much of a price drop (maybe to 12.5) lessening his appeal even further

    Big questions for me this week;

    1. Captain, or TC Mane? - I was always leaning to a GW38 TCaptaincy, and probably Sterling or Aguero, but that was always with the view that the title would be on the line on the last day, and relegation would be confirmed, as in Brighton would be safe. The scoutcast was also pretty convincing about the potential of Salah and Mane this week.

    2. Who to choose from my Brighton/Southampton budget defenders. I have Ryan/Gunn, and Duffy/Valery. I was on Ryan (higher save point potential) and Valery (better attacking threat) Is this the right way round?

Please weight in with any thoughts.

I hope so, as you say, and to counter my point, if the game is comfortable that means Liverpool are winning and have already scored a few goals...hopefully Mane has contributed to those goals.

I’m on TC Mané - can’t see a better time to use it.

And I’ve gone Ryan over Gunn and Duffy over Bednarek. The way Brighton have set up the last 2 games was basically to play for 0-0

      1. HamezMace
        • 9 Years
        4 years, 11 months ago

My concern with Salah/Mane this week is they may only get 60 minutes, if the game is 2-0 or something, could see them being withdrawn early with Barca to come.

On the last day, if the title is on the line, Sterling/Aguero would be guaranteed to start, and play 90 minutes.

Regarding this weekend, I think Brighton will play a little more offensively than they did against wol/tot, Newcastle at home is probably the last chance they'll have to get 3 points this season.

        1. Mixed Bag

          TC Mané.

Klopp: "I will not push that wrong mindset with a fresh line-up or whatever, no chance for that. We had enough time to recover from the last game, we have enough time to recover for the next game. Barcelona has nothing to do with the game on Friday." #FFScout #FPL #GW36

1 SOU and 1 BRI defender is a good defensive strategy if you are trying to hold a lead in a mini league. Otherwise pick 2 from Brighton.

I read the quotes from Klopp, and I have no doubt the usual three will start the game, but if the game is comfortable for them after 60 minutes or so, I could easily see one of them brought off early, why risk them?

I usually hedge my bets, especially with budget defenders, just a little concerned about Valery not starting, and another cameo sub appearance.

Hi all, I need some guidance.

    I'm chasing a 45pt lead.

We both have the same big hitters in Aguero Sterling Mane Son, so it's unlikely I can make up that when my differentials are players like Jota and Wilson. Bearing the gap in mind, would you:

    A. Play safe. Triple Captain Mane. (Rival will C Mane but has already used TC). Hope that does enough.

    B. Risk it. Swap Aguero/Sterling for Salah for a -4. TC him. Hope he explodes tonight and the City player I drop stays quiet.

I'm 30 points ahead in my mini league.

Rival only has Roberston as liverpool cover.

    I have TAA & Mane.

Should i bring in Salah an TC him

or bring in Roberston (to cover Rival) & TC Mane?

TAA might get rested...but since you have 30 pt lead and you have Mane TC, should be g2g

Bring Salah in (if free) and still TC Mané.

      Your TAA should cover Robertson.

    Have Mane/Robbo/Sterling already.....

    Is Aguero/Doucoure to Long/Salah for a -4 crazy?

I'm in the same boat. Need to make up a lead so it's very tempting. But shifting City out feels so wrong. Will probably just go for Robbo Mane TAA instead.

    Team:
    Lloris
    Doherty, TAA, Duffy
    Sterling, Son, Eriksen, Deloufeu
    Kun, Jimi, Firmino

Should I sell Erik and Kun to Salah and Zaha for -4 ot is it madness to sell Kun?
    Thanks

Ive decided KDB to Sterling to cover my M/L rival is happening (already have Mane)

Also decided best way to fund this is to downgrade Eriksen (already have Son)

So the question is Eriksen to who with a max value of 7.5

    Options...
    A, Moura
    B, Redmond
    C, ???
    Help

    In a real dilemma here,

    My mf is,
Eriksen, Son, Sterling, Sane & Jota

I think I have to get in Mané but in place of whom? The obvious pick will be to sell one of Eriksen or Sané but is it worth -4(budget issue) ? If yes then whom to sell amongst those 2?

Have heard a lot of chatter about TAA being rested for Gomez (undeniably he is a better defender albeit not as prolific at fantasy points). Anybody got any solid sources?

More likely Gomez plays against Barca. It's always a risk for TAA though. Better to own Robbo and VVD if you can afford.

They dont need better defender against Hudd at home thats for sure
But probably there is chance of him being rested for barca

    Captain?
    A) Mané.
    B) TAA.
    C) Sterling.

Still stumped after the article. All have their reasons for and against.

Given how poor United, Arsenal, and Chelsea have been for the majority of the season, it's amazing one of them will be in the CL next season...maybe two of them if one of them wins the EL too.

Don't actually know who I think deserves to be top 4 from those three.

When you look at the money they've spent and (some of) the players they have, its harder to believe two of them won't be in the champions league

I could see an English CL/EL double though, and only Utd missing out on CL for next season. Arsenal & Chelsea have been disappointing, but Man Utd are in serious, serious trouble.

Although a transfer ban for Chelsea would be interesting, it might inadvertently force their hand to keep Haz which could help them next season

Oh yeah, with the money they've spent of course, but I'm just talking about how they've played this season.
Think about how United started this season.
Arsenal have just lost back to back games, conceding three goals in each.
Chelsea have looked a shambles at various stages, manager was on the brink of a sacking in mid season.

United I can't see getting top four now. And you're right quite possible an English club win the EL.

Hazard deserves his dream move though.

What moves to make? 1 FT, 0.5 ITB

    Lloris
    Robbo, Doherty, Duffy
    Mane(C), Eriksen, Son, Jota
    Aguero, Wilson, Jimenez

    Foster, Valery, Cathcart, KDB*

    A) KDB > Bilva
    B) A + Cathcart > TAA/VVD -4
    C) KDB > Deulofeu, Wilson > Firmino -4

    Thanks.

I like B with VVD. TAA is a rotation risk with Gomez fit.
